Vince4 : gotta love them choices however, I did have 2 Camaros in the past (not new ones though)
Mgdv4man : no no, could get the 'vette now (conv. leather) but would be in a tight situation (less than 400 a month after ins. car payments and other non-car expenses) plus in 2 yrs my ins. should go down by about $2K/yr. So back to the 3 choices. camaro, impala, silverado)
Mfreeman : Those were my plans exactly, but the truck is about $6K more than the impala.(ask my gf, she knows my tastes are always for whatever is most expensive in its class: LT silverado, ext. cab, sports side box, leather, etc...) Not that much diff considering one's a sedan the other a truck (more utilization) but oh well, still have 10 months to decide.
All: the questions still remain, any suggestions as to which options to "definately" get, which are not needed, problems, things you really like, (being a silverado message thread, I would assume I"ll get answers on the silverado only, but if any of you have both(??) do let me know, thanks
Ryanbab: I know, but unless I lease again (would rather not do) I'll cost too much (remember, saving towards a 'vette here although whichever vehicle I get next, I"ll prob keep for more than 2-3 years. After all, the vette only has so much space to put stuff. (plus sweat-drenched rollerhockey gear is NOT going to touch the int. of my (future) vette
Man u talk about that vette like i talk about getting a truck. I am ordering (or buying one if i find one on the lot) june 2000. Id get the truck not the impala or camaro because then you can buy a trailer and haul the vette around when u get it and show it off that way. What colors are u considering????? I am heading towards indigo blue metalic or charchol grey. Oh yea get a dark interior it looks so much better parents just got a 2000 blazer (sunset gold) with graphite leather its sweet. Its loaded has every option except towing pkg. Hey if i may ask how old r u jose i am just curious.
I'll be 23 this upcoming Monday. If you are wondering about the vette insurance, it goes down by $2K/yr when I turn 25. (I have been doing my homework after all (although have not checked silverado ins. costs) As for affording it (corvette or silverado) I"m a system's analyst with most exp on AS/400's (but know pc's as well) and the salarys are very good in this field. Problem is that I"m also savings towards a house (vette, house, vette, house...damn, do I really need a roof over my head???) although I know that if I have a silverado then it would be much more convenient for such a time.
anything but black! (I like how it looks, but have always had bad luck with black cars: one stolen, one crashed) plus it's way too hot where I live for black. Anyway, the Indigo blue is very nice, my parents have a dark blue blazer and it looks sharp! Dark red would be nice, but time for a change, last 2 vehicles have been red/reddish. And green looks sweeet. Btw, I saw one or two in tu-tone, but haven't gotten too much info on that, do you (or anyone) know what choices are available for that? thanks in advance
I would, but the Tahoe I"m on right now is a lease that expires in June/2000. I know, it's still 10 months away, but wanted to hear what people had to say about the 3 possible cars I might be choosing from (so far that is However if I had been buying, I would certainly agree with you on waiting.
Thanks Ryanbab, so far (but have to see them in person to really decide) green/pewter, copper/pewter (but time for a change from reddish), pewter/black (why do I like that pewter so much??) and lastly blue/pewter (again with the pewter!) anyway, thanks for the list, bookmarked it on my browser for future use
2 tone is sharp! I first went looking for pure black (still looks great), but then I saw a Indigo blue over Pewter 2000 LS 5300 and now its mine. The 2000 brochure features a solid Sunset Gold metalic. I wonder how Sunset would look combined with white (over or under)? BTW - the 4th door is listed as an option in 2000 brochure but I have yet to see one in person.
white on top with gold on bottom is a nice color that was the first color of the truck that i drove. I didnt like the color myself but it was nice. The gold by itself is sharp ( i know we have a 2000 blazer that color) I first wanted the silver but i seen 6 about a month ago in the same parking lot 3 parked next to each other and it kinda turned me off. SO im going blue I know what u mean jose u need to see them in person its tough they dont have many on the lots
Im talking about the new redesigned tahoe to look like the trucks they come out next yr. This model yr 2000 still look like the old tahoes (square) GMC redesigned the yukons this yr and chevy did the suburban next yr gmc will do the suburban and chevy will do the tahoe.
Strange. I heard the Tahoe AND Suburban would be redesigned this year, and the kbb.com Tahoe pictures sure look like the new version. Even the interior shot looks like the new one.
Also, since the models are built on the same assembly line (along with the Olds and Cadillacs), it doesn't make sense to have a new Yukon with an old Tahoe; new Chevy Surburban along with old GMC Surburban. By the way, the GMC is no longer called the Surburban, it's the Tahoe XL or something like that.
Guess I didn't get my question answered with regards to the 2000 Silverado. I wanted to know how much additional $$$ it was for the fourth door. It's listed as E24 or something like that as an option, but the price is 'N/A'--as in not affordable?????
Unfortunately, Washington state is a little too far to go for buying a vehicle barely over invoice. I'm currently in Virginia. Thanks anyway.
Tim great job on the door locks. I tried it on my 99 Silverado with no success. Gee I was hoping that it would work. It is a real cool feature. I wonder what else you can program by pressing, pulling or twisting buttons.
As for the three cars....Lose the Impala...how can you put that thing in with a Camaro and a Silverado? Now the 96 style..I can see...but the new ones??
My old 88 Silverado had hidden features in the radio. You would push a few buttons...and it would turn on a built in circuit that would add more power and make the sound kinda like equalized? It also had a DNR you could turn on. I don't think it was listed in the book....someone told me about it.
It didn't take as long as I thought for the locks...I just hope I typed it right. As I said..i have not tryed it...as I am happy with the factory setting. Has it worked for any of the 00 owners?
I am back to having a periodic detonation/spark knock. Anyone still having this problem? The topic for it on the first page isn't getting anymore responses so I am guessing either nobody is having the problem anymore or just not worrying about it anymore.
Doesn't matter what gas octane or brand I use, it still pings periodically only the higher octane seems to make it lighter and less frequent. It is still mainly during peak temps and running the air.
My dealer is not wanting to take ownership of this and help. I think they are aware of the widespread problem and are trying to help GM sweep it under the rug until the warranty expires. It doesn't do it all the time and it's not always severe, especially when its mild temps outside, so they keep blowing me off saying its normal design characteristics. They are really blowing me off now because I put an aftermarket catback exhaust system on my truck. Now they say I have voided my emissions warranty. Crapola! For one the Massey Vs. Ferguson act protects me from them voiding my warranty on anything other than the replaced part. For a second, if anyone checks it out, everything from the catalytic converters back is not covered under warranty at all anyway!
Soooooo, back to my original question. Anybody found relief of this problem? I love this truck! I had previously been a Ford truck owner for 15 years. Won't do that again. However, I really would like to get this ping cured.
Ryanbad- No I haven't played with autocad since college. I work over at Raytheon Systems in Arlington, TX and design thermodynamic engine simulations and control codes for F-16 engines.
Jose13- I still vote for the truck. In my version of the vette master plan, I was going to get a very basic truck and save for the vette, but after I saw all the wonderful toys (options)on the truck, I decided to get a fully loaded 4x4. You might want to wait until 2003 for your new vette. That will be the 50th year of the corvette. Plus there is rumor of more improvements, although I couldn't think of any that it needed.
Everyone- I just received a build date of Sept 20th, about how long does it take them to ship the truck after finished? one week? two weeks?
There are several topics just for the 4th door. You might want to see whats been said. But basically the price has not been announced yet. Speculation is $450 - $500. GM is still claiming production will start in November. Ordering may start in October. ...... Rich
Im done arguing. The only change for 2000 is that they arent gonna make the 2 doors. I have a question for u. How come in magazines like truck trend they have pics of the 2000 suburban and 2000 yukon but no pics or any info on the new redesigned tahoes? That is because they dont come out until dec 2001!!!!! Trust me on this one ok richard.
Planejane got her 3/4 off the lot elsewhere. Check out the section she created for it.
Mfreeman,
It will be built the WEEK of the 20th. Mine was a Monday also...it was built Thursday..and took a week to get to the dealer...which is 25 miles from the factory where it came from. 2 weeks would not be far off.
I went to kkb and seen the 2000 tahoe and yes they look redesigned im not disagreeing here but how come the engine is still a 5.7L??? the new suburban has a 5.3 like the silverados. I think they put the pics up prematurely. Hopefully im wrong and they do come out this winter but from what i heard its still a yr away ( pics of the silverado came out a yr early well maybe 8 months early) Its a nice looking truck it looks better than the old ones.
I still have this problem and I am still trying to get it fixed. I have taken it to three different dealerships for a total of seven times, and I am still not any better off. I think there are many people out there with this problem, maybe it is not as annoying to some as it others. I have not given up on trying to find a fix for it. If anyone knows the solution to this, I am sure there are many people who would like to hear it.
Getting tired of waitin, might pull a Cindy(go get one off the lot)! I have GMO and would have to pay 2.5% more but it might be worth it as time keeps ticking by. Anybody have the address for the GM vehicle locator? 13 weeks and I'm starting to get impatient. Way to go Cindy, I'm jealous but happy for you. Curious what kind of mileage you get with the 3.73, that's what I ordered. THX Mark
How did you figure out what DAY your truck was built? Mine was built the WEEK of April 12, if memory serves, but I have no idea what day of the week it was built.
When the truck was delivered to the dealer...the salesman gave me a copy of the Invoice they recieve from the factory to them. It was on that. Don't know if they normally give that to you or not...but I got it. I went GMO pricing and don't know if that matters. I needed an exact $$ to pay...so he ran a copy of the invoice...which also listed the options
Thanks for the delivery information. Was wondering if you know the answer to another question I have. I picked up my order sheet from the dealer and when I looked it over and started checking off option codes I noticed that some of the option codes were not on the sheet(i.e., Z71) but they also had extra options codes that I've never seen before. The MSRP on the sheet was $34280, which is $50 more then when I priced it when I made the order.
the surburban is coming out in december of 1999 because i heard it is supposed to be a sort of millineum vehicle or something..it will host the 5.3 and the 6.0(in the heavier duty surb.)
tahoes and yukons are to follow, but dont know how far behind(i also heard for the tahoes and the yukons there is going to be a heavy duty and light duty, they are supposedly going to either be able to put the duramax in it or the big block that is coming out
I also have a GMO order, and the discount seems to have changed a little from the 99 to 00. When I was checkin out 99's I called the GM 800# and was quoted discounts of 18% for GMO, and 15.5 for GMS. I ordered my 00 last week and the #'s seemed higher than just a normal model year increase, so I called GM again and was told GMO is now 17% while GMS remains the same. Only 1.5% dif, If you believe the dealer, he said GM would rather we bought from dealer stock. Good Luck! CAPT
GM keeps making GMS and GMO closer...so people will order out of stock.
Mfreeman,
Some of those codes (usually ones at top)are just standard crap like emissions and other things that make up the truck in General. However...if that sheet IS your truck as ordered...and you got Z71...and it's not an option?....I'd be wondering. Z71 is the actual Order Code. I can't be 100% positive..as I don't know for sure which form you mean....but I'd be asking questions...
My salesman Knew that I knew exactly what everything costs and what Invoice was...and the fact that I knew more people in the Industry than he did.....so he didn't care what papers I saw.
My Chevy salesman encouraged me to get the pricing info from Kelly, and even helped me once get a great deal on a Buick from another dealer for my dad. That's why I stayed with him, eb=ven though the dealeship occasionally ticks me off. Not lately, though.
Tim: The lock trick didn't work on my '99. Thanks for typing it in, though.
Yes worry! I assume the sheet you referred to is the printout from the dealers configuration system (or whatever it's called). That is what you agreed to buy and what they will enter as your order. You best check right away.
P.S. I found out on my order that if I wanted to change something after the order was accepted, they had to cancel it and start all over. Hope that's not your situation.
has anyone installed a K&N air filter system or a cat back exhaust on the 5.3 engine if so how did it respond also does anyone know how they got the extra 15 horsepower from the 2000 model.by the way its a great truck
Yes, the K&N "System" will provide a much smoother acceleration and noticeable torque increase. My engine runs cooler and it compliments my catback exhaust which delivers more of the same benefits of the K&N, an overall better breathing engine. Just don't go "TOO" free with the exhaust or you will lose "low end torque" and gain it more in the mid to upper range.
They got the increased torque and hp by a cam change for 2000 models.
ZBAD71, I am assuming you put in the K&N Generation II system. Couple of questions: How much did you pay? How difficult was it to install? Have you gotten any "Grief" from the dealers about warranty? Also, what exhaust system did you go with and did you have to cut the old system or just unbolt it. Sorry for the long post. thanks.
Think before using the K&N system. I'm not against K&N or performance enhancements. The way the K&N passes a higher air volume also lets more dirt pass through. This has been proven in independent studies when compared to OE and other high performance air filters. This is not to say the K&N is going to ruin your engine. I run a turbo diesel and the thought of fine particles of dirt spinning around the turbocharger at 50,000 rpm is not cool. BTW, the study I read placed the Amsoil 2-stage at the top without sacrificing much performance, if any. And no, I am not an Amsoil dealer. You say all the racers run K&N's? They also rebuilt their engines after one or two races.
The K&N filters breath better BUT FILTER MORE THAN A STOCK FILTER when maintained properly (i.e., washed and reoiled at recommended intervals). I am not sure what "tests" you are referring to, but all the tests by both the aftermarket filter manufacturers and also independent studies of aftermarket products and even oem racing development teams have PROVEN your claim to be totally erroneous. Sorry, but facts are facts and they didn't come from those with a vested interest in the product alone. I challenge you to provide this topic area with the locality of the source of these tests.
People with average to no experience in the auto industry have a fear for some reason of aftermarket parts. Maybe many years ago when there was little regulation on aftermarket parts, one may have reason to be skeptical of certain aftermarket parts, but today the aftermarket world is mandated to meet and most time EXCEED the requirements that the oem product had to meet, especially with the emission type parts like the intake filters. If it were possible that more dirt, etc. could enter the intake with a K&N filter, it would not pass emission regulations, and thus could not be marketed legally.
Another factor that ensures that after market parts meet or exceed oem design is the Massey Vs. Ferguson act, which simply states that it is illegal to deny any vehicle owner of their factory warranty due to the owner using aftermarket parts unless the vehicle manufacturer can, in a court of law, prove that the aftermarket part causes the failure of the faulty part in question. Under this act, only the replaced part is no longer covered. So, in short, if you put a K&N filter in your vehicle while it is still under warranty, the only part no longer covered under your oem warranty is the part you replaced, which is now covered under whatever warranty that aftermarket manufacturer provides. Period.

Do an Inet search on this topic. I think you will find plenty of supporting documents that will put your mind at ease in using aftermarkets. Go to the SEMA site. You will find tons of info there for a start.
I put a dual split catback with a Magnaflow muffler on mine. Great torque increase, great sound, smoother acceleration, no delay after upshifts now, and so far combined city and highway 2 mpg better gas mileage.
Tim, Tried the door lock programming you posted on my '99 Silverado. Doesn't work! You have to be Y2K compliant!
mpazos, I agree with you about he K&N filter. Breathes nice, but left oily grime on my intake and throttle body. Stick with stock paper elements. The factory must know something!
You over-oiled the filter element. If you got oil on your TB and intake, you didn't oil it per K&N instructions. If done correctly, you won't have that problem.
If the K&N filter elements were like you and mpazos say, there would be all sorts of bad reports from people who have used them. Everyone I have talked with and conversed with over the internet, all have reported positive results.
