These dealers here are picky wont let me order on with the supplier deal maybe thats why i am traveling a little furthur. On the flares have u seen a indigo blue with the black flares. I finally seen one going to work today i passed a gmc slt Z71 indigo blue with the black flares it looks very nice. The red with the black is nice if you put on black side steps its complements the truck. As for the white with black ones that is ugly i see all kind of them here too. So far the best looking one ive seen was the blue with the black.

The other day when I closed the third door, a piece of the handle broke inside. I went to the dealer; of course they had to order a new handle. Went down yesterday to have it replaced, and guess what; they had sent the handle for the fourth door!!! The handle was completely backwards from what I needed and was intended to go on the driver side. The parts guy looked it up again, and sure enough it was listed as being available in drivers and passengers side. This means to me the four doors are on their way, I know one guy on this post already has his. Seems pretty ironic that parts are available for that door even before the truck is available. Go figure!

Going to work today I saw a semi load of Chevy 1500 LT extended cab 4x4's from the side all were 4 doors. Guess they are being built. This was in Quad City area (Iowa/Illinois border on the Mississipi River). I have been told by GM that my build week is Jan. 10th so none of those 4doors could have been mine.

Can anyone out there explain the difference between the "GMS+3%" and Dealer invoice pricing? My company is apparently a GM Supplier and we get a discount....

    Thanks!

PS 1/2 Ton 99 4x4 goes like stink in the snow while wearing 4 studded snow tires.....
  • kantonkanton Member Posts: 142
Stick with the smaller tires, then when your truck gets there go to your local tire store, trade them in (most will trade) and get yourself a good set of bigger tires; like BFG AT 285's. I think the firestone 265's aren't the greatest and definately not worth the $365. The 285's look really good and don't need any mods or cutting to the truck.
  • kantonkanton Member Posts: 142
    Markbuck,

Sorry to hear your truck stinks in the snow; mine is wonderful. Autotrac and posi work great, I do however have Mud terrain tires on the Silverado, that has to make a difference. good luck!

Does anyone know what the GVWR will be on the HD Silverado models?

I was one of those unfortunate few who got the towing package without the oil cooler, and GM had changed the sticker so I'm not entitled to the recall to get it added on. I asked a dealer about adding on a heavy-duty one, and they said it will run me about 250 bucks installed. Any idea how hard it is to do myself, how much money I'd save, etc.? Keep in mind I've never done any kind of transmission work before.

    Thanks in advance,
    Mark

Go to a reputable trailer shop and have one put on. A buddy of mine went to a CROFT TRAILER shop and got a REAL HEAVY DUTY transmision oil cooler put on his Dodge 2500 for $120.00 installed complete. The coolers themselves are not that expensive. Really good ones are less than $80.

I have a transmission question. I have a 2500 4wd auto and when I start from a stop and count shifts it comes out to be a 5 speed transmission. I've read scattered comments about lock up vs. non lock up mode and how tow/haul affects this. Funny thing is that when I manually shift from D to 3 it goes to the same rpm as when it shifts up by itself so it isn't just going out of lockup. Also, in tow/haul mode it will eventually shift to the same high gear rpm as when not in tow/haul so it isn't being held in a different state.

    What's the story?
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
I posted that question at work. On my way home I put a little more effort into figuring out the answer. My conclusion is that it goes into lock-up in 3rd gear and once it's locked it stays. This is the "extra" shift I noticed. So when it goes into 4th it is already locked up (how do they do that?). I determined this by putting it in "3" and counting shifts from a stop, there are 3 (4 speeds). If you shift manually from 4th (D) to 3rd it stays locked up. I don't know about going manually to 2nd then back to 3rd. Also, tow/haul doesn't cause it to not lock or to unlock.

Is my lock theory correct or is something else going on?

mdw1000 - trans oil cooler is simple to install. In effect you just cut the line between the radiator trans cooler and the trans and insert the cooler. You want the aux cooler to be AFTER the stock radiator cooler. Usually it is done with flexible hose and barb fittings so the plumbing is easy. Don't pay dealer prices to have it installed. The trailer shop is a good idea.

afs11 - I don't know the GVWR but you can bet it will be similar to Ford's.
  • afs11afs11 Member Posts: 86
    Mark,

Please explain "GM had changed the sticker"? What do you mean by this? I thought that the transmission oil cooler is included with the Z82 Trailer Tow Package.

    Thank you,
    afs

It's what is referred to as a brain fart on GM's part. They entered them into the computer for the stickers to include the trans oil cooler, but they didn't get installed. It affected trucks between a certain date. Mine was one of them and I had to "literally fight" GM tooth and nail to get it put on. For some reason, they did not claim mine in the campaign notices they sent out so they said I didn't rate one being added. I took the window sticker to the dealer and told them they either owe me a trans oil cooler or reimbursement for the trailering pkg. They chose the cheaper of the two, but I really had to [non-permissible content removed] hard!
  • bud_light_dudebud_light_dude Member Posts: 330
Putting your truck in 3 vise D, should keep the truck from going into 4th gear AND the torque converter from locking in. These transmissions are actually 5 speeds if you consider the torque converter lock up an extra gear.

If you really accelerate hard, like getting onto the highway, you should "Feel 3 distinct shifts",
then immediately after the third shift (which is 4th gear), the torque converter should lock in, which seems like a 5th gear (replaces the old "overdrive" terminology.

If you have tow/haul selected, it will not keep you from going into 4th gear. Tow/haul simply allows more transmission shift "line pressure" to build up before shifs, so you have less lag after shifting, etc. It also keeps the torque converter from being able to lock in. Thus essentially, the "overdrive" or "5th gear" or "lockup", however you wish to refer it as, does not occur. This is what keeps the transmission from "searching" as much on the highway going up hills, passing, etc. with a load being hauled or towed.

    Hope this helps.

My company is also eligible for this GMS +3% discount. I checked where I got my 1/2 ton truck for a 3/4 ton truck.

They quoted me $850 over invoice. Then I asked about the GMS +3% price and it ran $200 under invoice. Over $1000 cheaper. On a 1/2 ton truck the current price is $200 over invoice, so it isn't as sweet.

And the dealers all told me they cannot deal on the GMS+ price. They cannot go up or down. They probably can deal on the trade-in, but not on the price.

    Good Luck,

The truck i am gonna order stickers for $32508 after the deal its between 27500 and 28000. Right around invoice. No dealing its take it or leave it. Im sure its a better deal than you could ever get actually dealing with a dealer and negotiating and its much easier.

hey anyone have the wade plastic bed rail caps? I seen em in the perforamce products magazine and at rhino linings the other day i think they look very nice i am just wondering if anyone actually has em on their truck.

Another thing does anyone have the Rhino spray in liner if so how much did you pay. Delaer told me $399. Im just wwonering cause my cousin got his sonoma done and it was $450 after a $50 coupon.

    Thanks everyone

Do you know what the dates of production were for the trucks which did not receive the transmission cooler. If I understand you correctly, the Z82 trailering now really includes the trans cooler but didn't for a brief time. Is that correct or does none of the Z82 trailering packages have the cooler?

How long did it take for GM to notify you?

I recently purchased a Silverado and the trans cooler was a must. I'll be very upset if I find out it doesn't have the cooler and it has to be added on. I'm not thrilled about the idea of an add on. Seems like it's never the same as from the factory.

Ryan, my rhino liner was just under 400 bucks.

I think that problem with the trans oil coolers was early last year. My truck was built in Feb of 99, so I don't think you have anything to worry about if you ordered recently. They weasled out of giving me a trans oil cooler by updating the sticker to not include that under the Z82 package, and they lowered the price as well. Not by a whole lot though, so I probably still get screwed. Oh well, maybe I'll get a better one. Any recommendations for brands?

According to www.auto.com report, GM is still in the position of shoving their heads up where the sun don't shine. Offering $500 coupons to buyers of GM rigs, to "improve market share". Wonder why they can't see that with a whole lot of 1500 model's unsold, and not a single 2500 available, it would increase market share tremendously to put some 2500's into the works? They apparently do not know how the supply and demand curves work.
My suggestion to them, is send the higher decision makers to school and take a course in "Economics". Could help those goof balls a lot I think. But what the heck do I know. I have a BSEE degree and spent many hours in "Econ" class. Apparently the powers that be at GM are not too smart in SUPPLY AND DEMAND.

Just my 2 cents worth.....GM wake up!!!!!!!!

Unless there has been a change in the last few years (which there most certainly could be) the torque converter locks in 3rd gear also, IF the shift selector is in 3rd. You can test it by cruising, holding the accelerator steady and apply light pressure to the brake pedal (the converter unlocks with brake application).

Don't do the test while accelerating or going up a hill (any type of engine load) since that also releases the converter.

Has anyone else noticed that coasting with tow/haul mode on allows the engine to slip into an almost no-gear mode? The trans on mine seems to release almost entirely when coasting in tow/haul mode; in regular mode it still has engine braking and RPMs are definitely higher.

    Corvairs still rule.

I was on the highway at 4:00 after work today. Traffic was stopped due to construction on the roadside (gawkers). Some lady wasn't paying attention and hit me at 65 mph or better while I was almost sitting still! My truck is pretty much toast I think. There are 3 inch deep creases on both sides of the back of the cab where the truck bed slammed into it!

I spent 3 hours at the hospital getting xray's taken on my neck and back (they both hurt like hell!).

Anyway, I do believe it's goodbye 99 Z71 and hello 2000 6.0l 3/4 ton! Gonna do it all the way this time! Might wait to see if I can get a 4 door model!
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
That's terrible bud_light_dude! I'm glad you are well enough to come home and post your story. You must have slammed into the car in front, did the air bag go off? I sure hope the damage is beyond the truck's value, otherwise the ins. co. may want to fix it. That would be a drag. How was the lady? She probably took quite a jolt hitting a solid frame vehicle like yours.

Saw two Indigo blue Silverado's here yesterday and one had the Black flares and one had the Pewter flares I thought the Pewter looked a lot better than the Black, but I guess that is a personal decision if the two tone is more appealing to you or not.

OUCH ! Hope your OK, but by the sounds of it your really sore now, it takes a day or two for the real hurt to come on after accidents, I'm a volunteer Fireman/EMT here in N.Y. so I see my share of these types of accidents first hand.

On the other hand that's a hell of a way to buy a new truck. I just went thru this with my wife's Windstar 3 months ago, she was clobbered broadside by some nut speeding down the road, damage was up to $8600 and auto body shop still wanted to fix it. Went to my insurance company & asked them at what point do they consider totalling a vehicle, they said when it hits 65% of value they start looking very closely at the damage for repair/replace option. Needless to say we went from a 96 to a 2000 Windstar & 5 more years of payments.

Glad you're OK. You may as well make the best of this BAD situation and move up to a Tundra. What do you think, Ryan?
  • werkingwerking Member Posts: 431
the whole (short!) length of the tundra was one big crumple zone. ya know...turns into one tiny little (yes, even smaller than it is now!) accordian like deal. good thing for bud_light_dude (glad to hear you're ok, by the way!) he was in THE TRUCK, otherwise, he might not be posting anymore messages. seriously though, good news to hear that this truck can take a blow at 65 mph and the driver's surfing the internet the next day...

    kyle
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
if bud was in a tundra when he got hit he wouldnt have been talking to us today. PYRO what do u think i think? Ive only seen 2 on the roads around here all i usually see is fords and dodoges and chevys hmm says something about their popularity. I am not even gonna say anything about the tundra ill be wasting my breath anyways to put it lightly they are a joke. The hype is over sorry to tell u its all downhill from here for the tundra.

    Ryan
  • bud_light_dudebud_light_dude Member Posts: 330
including Pyro for the kind gestures. I am ok except for a very sore neck and back.

I have no intention of slamming the Tundra by saying this, because I am a true believer that everyone should buy what they choose to and be able to do so without ridicule. However, I have owned Toyota trucks in the past, and I know that this collision in a Tundra or even worse, a Tacoma, would have been much worse on me. That Silverado was hit at 65 mph or better while I was almost sitting still, and all I got was a severe case of whiplash. That Silverado took an extremely hard hit and really did a great job at taking the hit without delivering much to me at the drivers seat. After seeing my Silverado at the salvage yard looking like a wishbone, I know I would have been much more seriously hurt in a Tundra. The frame strength and sheetmetal thickness of the Silverado saved my [non-permissible content removed].....literally! There were creases in the back of the cab on both sides where the impact pushed the bed into the cab. I am not so confident that the cab on the Tundra would have held the impact as much as the Silverado. That is just my belief based on the accident I just had.

Thanks again to everyones kind gestures. I am not trying to knock the Toyota, but I will definitely be buying another GM truck. I am thinking that it will be the 3/4 ton ext cab w/6.0l. May just wait too see how that 4 doors turn out.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Glad tp hear ur doing good. You should consider waiting till 2001 and get the 8.1 in the 2500 that will be one hell of a truck with one hell of an engine 340 horses. I personally dont think i would like to go see my truck after i was in an accident. What kind of car did she have and was she hurt at all? I am glad to hear they are built tough and strong. Hope u continue to get better.

    What a night..

wayyyyy toooo many 23 ouncers last night..

I remember asking every girl for a table dance....problem is...we were in a normal bar!

    Dohhh!!

You know how you feel when you should stop....and go home?
I felt that way at 10:00 this morning!

    BLD,

Sorry to hear about the truck.....but like it was said...once ya know you are OK......it's a great time to upgrade to a 2500!.

    Vince,

I have always noticed the 5 gear thing.

I was having a problem with it shifting too soon....and had it re-flashed a while back.
It was great after....4th gear didn't come until 40..period...then about 50 or so the "5th" gear would come..

Lately all of a sudden....when cold...it works that way....when warmed up....the 5th is almost right after 4th....making it too much lag I feel for that speed...

When taking off at a normal speed.....at what MPH does your 4th/5th happen?

    4 DOORS

I have a buddy who works for GM truck...and gets to sit in on meetings about problems.

He said the new 4 doors have a problem with the glass exploding??....the small rear glass....this was told to me last night.....so maybe I don't have it right......
Also the interior wind noise is a problem.

Another friend told me a while back about weak frames on 3/4 tons.. The dealer also told me a rumor about that.....something about the carriers were to blame for tightening them down too much on the delivery trucks.....

A 3rd friend told me the GMT800.....aka new silverado had weak frames. With that new hydro formed....better crush crap they have now....I guess it can be weak in some cases.

Wards auto (a publication) said that jacking it up to change a tire....will cause the frame to bend and you will not be able to operate the door cuz it will be damaged.

I'm supposed to get a copy of this soon.

so be carefull when having a flat...eh??

I don't see how this can be true...but he and wards are very good sources.

Still think I got the best truck made though...

I know if I got creamed in a truck....I'd want it to be a Silverado....and not a Tindra...

....Did any of you tindra owners ever get the ginsu knives too??

    LOL

  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Tim, it shifts at very low speeds. If I'm light on the gas it goes into 5th at even 35mph or so from memory. It's no problem though, the engine is just fine at low rpm under light loads. I have no complaints whatsoever with the way this truck shifts, I think it's a great transmission.
  • rshornsbyrshornsby Member Posts: 200
I sure hope most of the rumors about the 2000 Silverado don't materialize. Finally decided to go back to Chevrolet after 11 years with Ford. I have had no problems at all with that pickup. Now I'm not to sure that I want a Chevrolet Silverado if all the problems aren't resolved soon. It is a shame that the best pickup manufacturer in the USA for a long, long time has came down to putting out a truck that can't be depended upon.
    Too bad!!!!!!

I got just slightly bumped in California at a red light one day, only very slightly. Didn't hurt at all for about 5 or 6 hrs., then had the darnest headache and stiff neck for several days.
I sympathize with anyone involved in a rearender.

    Vince,

Under my acceleration pattern...it's still in 3rd at 35....

It's not tooo bad when in 5th...but I can't remember if it's always been like that??...or I just didn't pay attention?

Another thought on the exploding glass...

If the cab of a 4 door was weak..and flexed too much...therefore maybe pinching or flexing the door...a window may explode?

Good thing I didn't have to have a 4 door right now.

    Good luck

How does one step "up" to a Tindra? If you own a Tercel? (They have about the same load capacity).

    Roger:

What problems need to be resolved? I have had none in 7500 miles, and the rumors about frames bending when changing tires sounds like bullcrap to me.

Explain to me how jacking your truck up to change a flat tire can bend the frame? Thats a line of BS. Whats it made out of aluminum foil? A matchbox car wouldnt even bend. I think someone is telling u stories.
