My 2500 has about 7600 miles on it and I have had no problems mentioned here...or any for that matter.
Planejane I'm sure has even way more miles than that...she hasn't piped about anything bad..so I'd imagine it's Ok too

    Wtking,

About less than a year ago GM changed to their VOM ordering system. Every dealer or buyer I ever talked to said it sucked! GM makes the only truck for me..but I hate the company itself. They do so many stupid things.
There has been a shortage of parts that also contribute to this...things like the axle manufacturer bailing out..and the likes.
GM probably also sees like you said....5% of the sales are 2500....so perhaps it becomes less of an important issue?
The new system forces dealers to "wait" until they are "allowed" to order X type of vehicle...sometimes they have "lottery" or "bonus" type orders that a dealer may be able to sneak one in if he is quick enough.

GM's whole theory is "we sell all we build"...problem is they are not going to build enough! They also say.."we are going to sell X amount of Tahoes"....or whatever...instead of saying let's open another plant to keep up...."we sold all we made!"

There is also a desire to squeeze the amount of extra parts around to a nil....so nil they only have exactly what they need for that week. Old days...an order could be changed at the last minute...they had extra parts!
Now if a part is in short supply....even just days...it holds up your order...possibly cancels it...just because they didn't have a couple extra parts around.

    I ordered my 2000 in march...it was cancelled by GM in May....due to too many orders..they say..I could re-order one in June...and got it in August..as a 2000 instead of a 99.

99 was a grim year for 2500's....and 2000 looks not much better....4 doors may not even happen for 2000.

I feel for all who are waiting...but don't give up...it's worth the wait.

I know mine will sell like hotcakes in a couple years....that's for sure..

    Good Luck

Someone mentioned Stainless scratches easier than chrome on nerf bars..

    This is true...kinda..

Chrome is a harder surface than stainless. A Quick flash coating or dip of chrome will scratch less easy than 304 Stainless....but it's not that Stainless is bad.

Stainless doesn't get a coating..it is just polished to look like chrome. the higher luster will yes...scratch easier...but it's due to the higher luster than chrome.
Because it's not coated or dipped...it will not flake off or if it does get a severe scratch...you won't see black or bare metal...because it's solid all the way through.

I have had the SS boards for about a month now...and yes they have small haze like scratches...but they polished out easy.

I like the SS finish better......just not the price..

    Can't have both though...

    Happy Holidays

If you live in Flint, you are close to Windsor, Ontario. Why don't you look at the dealers lots in the Windsor area? With the Free Trade Pact & great dollars difference, you might get a great deal on a 3/4 ton pickup?

I live in the Vancouver, BC area & most of the dealers here have about 5-6 new 3/4 ton pickups on the lot! Most of the trucks are extented cab 4WD units. The average dealer has about 30 1/2 tons & about 5 3/4 tons.

    Good Luck,

Yes it is possible to have one touch up. Many luxury cars have it (my 1998 Lexus GS300 has it and my 1997 BMW 528 had it also). It is simply the a switch like the one on the drivers side that now goes down with one touch. If GM makes a one touch up & down in any of its vehicles and it fits in location the switch is in now it would probably work..........ummmmm - does any of the Cadillac lineup have it?

You know what is going to happen don't you??? You'll win a contest where the winner MUST keep the prize for 5 years to be able to actually be yours.......and the prize will be a new 2000 Tundra !!!!!!!!!Then you will be posting on the Tundra III topic asking others if "Toyota has gone to far..or have others not gone far enough".....yep, it's your destiny !!! ....................or of course you could just wake up from a bad nightmare!!

In your post regarding stainless and chrome nerf bars, you stated: "stainless doesn't get a coating..it is just polished to look like chrome".

Westin makes steel nerf bars with two coatings: polished chrome and powdercoat. These come with a 5 year warranty, including the finish.

They also make an all-new Platinum CPS Chrome Plated Stainless Steel nerf bar. It comes with a lifetime warranty, including the finish. I have these nerf bars on my 2000 Silverado and really like them. The main brackets fasten to the cab mounts, and the support brackets use existing holes in the frame. No drilling is required.

Anyone interested in these nerf bars can check them out at www.westinautomotive.com .

Just a joke about irony, since your feelings about the Tundra are well known and I was in the mood to rattle your cage, well you know the rest. Did the cookies and milk clean out the cobwebs?

I've lost track, did you or did you not order a truck? If so what did you finally decide on?

bob259 is thinking about leaving the Chevrolet Silverado owners and getting a Lexus RX300 or a Toy 4-runner!..Help me talk some sense into him. He has had some problems that just don't seem to go away so he went and test drove a RX300 & 4-runner over the holidays.

    WTKing,

Dealers around here USED to have a few 2500's back in about Feb/march 99....they have been gone for a while.
The things are built in the Pontiac plant....we are so close to it...yet we have to wait so long. I drove by it a few times while waiting...and wondered if mine was on the line that day?...

    Good luck

    Gary,
OK....someone makes a chrome plated SS bar....My statement that solid SS does not get a coating is still true.
I would imagine that SS under the chrome would help for rust protection...

I intend to buy a Silverado 2500 with the 6.0 liter engine, 2WD, 3.73 rear axle, tow package and HD suspension. EPA information and dealer window stickers indicate city gas mileage at 12 MPG and highway at 16MPG.

I'm interested in hearing from real world users of this same vehicle what they've actually experienced, particularly when towing on the highway and driving solo (not towing).
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Why is every other question about this subject? IT VARIES!!!!!!!!!! SCROLL UP and go through the first about 100 posts u should see many answers and there is a topic for the 6 Liter gas mileage.
  • bob259bob259 Member Posts: 280
Don't forget the Land Cruiser I test drove today as well... Now if I knew a bank to rob I could swap tomorrow.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Why are you going to get a toyota??? WHY WHY WHY??? I think these "car makers" toyota, lexus, lincoln SHOULD STICK WITH MAKING CARS!!!!! not suvs not trucks CARS like they always made and made good. I still to this day dont even know why i got in that tundra. i know im gonna catch hell but i dont care im in a chevy post and i can do it.

    ryanbab,
I'm new to this message board, so forgive my ignorance at not having found the gas mileage topic board until after I had posted my message.

However, everyone knows that gas mileage VARIES, so that's stating the obvious. The fact that it does vary is what prompted my question to begin with - I was just looking for some ranges to see what people were really experiencing as opposed to what the EPA estimates are.

I also note that many of the responses on this particular vehicle/engine are from 4x4 owners and/or folks who have the 4.10 gears, neither of which are features I am interested in, so those results don't really tell me what I was looking for.

Just got back from my neighborhood Chevy dealer, 8 3/4 ton Ext. 4x4's on the ground between Friday and this afternoon. All sold except two. One meadow green LS/Tan int, not really my coler, and one dark gray LS/Graphite int, possible fit, except they deleted the interior carpet???? Good news, talked to truck manager, seems to think he can get me one in a reasonable time frame. These ones were all ordered at the same time, and took about 4 months. I can wait four months, trucks are awesome!!
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
Most people here have 2500 4x4 With 4:10's

I get about 13MPG overall....roughly 50/50 for city highway...55 in the city..75-80 on the highway.

12/16 may indeed be a realistic number for the lower GVW less weight truck you have mentioned..

I've heard people say 15 before...but not with the 8600 GVW 4x4 version.

    Good Luck

    - Tim

(Don't mind Ryan...he has been here a month and expects people to know everything...like him!...)

    LOL

Im sorry for the rude comment but i was fuming. To much stress and stuff going on i apologize wight. But seriously any truck you buy nowadays sucks in gas so why be so preoccupied with it. Im more worried about the color right now than gas milage. Everyone from my grandma to my dad has said something about how much gas it eats well um what about his blazer he drives it gets worse milage than a silverado. Dont let gas milage determine what truck your gonna get its pennys (i know they add up but come on).
A month thats all ive been here??? seems alot longer. oh yea Tim i counted 82 days LEFT!!!!! Just thought id let u know. I got bored and counted.
I am much calmer after those last few posts i have settled down even washed my truck in the snow too cant wait to get it dirty tomorrow.

My mileage was over 20 on the highway and avearges 16 in town. That doesn't suck

The RX300 is a Camry with a taller body. Lousy turn radius to make up for the top-heavy (roll-over prone) design. Basically useless for anything but a small wagon, which is what it really is. Even my Lexus-loving in-laws hate the RX300 they bought. It will probably be the first car (yes, car, not SUV) they keep less than a year.

The Landcruiser is just overpriced crap. But that's my opinion of almost anything Toyota makes.

Why would anyone even put the RX300 and Landcruiser in the same topic as a Silverado? At least when the Camaro was mentioned, you could say something good about it. There is nothing good about a Toyota.

Hey Tim, how about letting me know the specs of your truck. Which suspension? I saw in an earlier post that you didn't get the locking rear end. Any regrets? I'm ordering tomorrow, going to bite the bullet and wait. I'm getting nowhere now. Just have to decide on color, and a few options.

P.S. If you have an LT, how are the seats holding up? Heaters, switch gear all reliable? Thanks in advance.

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Hey Todd in case tim doesnt get back to u in time he has an LT. I think he got the Z85 (heavy duty) suspension if im not mistaken. Maybe im wrong but i think thats what he got.
What color are u thinking of getting??? Go with the blue cant go wrong its a beautiful color. Just thought id help. Hopefully i have

2000 2500...LT...leather holds up fine...and gears in seat.

    Black..black flares..Ex.cab SB...duhh...Grey Interior
z85 Firm ride...trailer package...oil cooler..tranny cooler..on/off road tires...skid plates....and pretty much everything else comes with an LT....didn't get camper mirrors..(sorry Vince)..cell phone wiring..or trailer wiring...it did come with a wiring harness of some kind though..

Put Skins/rails/boards/bug guard, and Duraliner in also.

pics are some place on this site...

    Regrets for no locker??....nope!

No it can't hurt...but I doubt even 1 percent of the people here will ever have a need for it....If i could have been sure at the time of ordering that I wasn't ging to have to change the fluid in the rear every 5 months..(10,000 miles)...maybe I would have got it?

    next time perhaps?

    good Luck

Your truck is kick um well u know what. It looks real nice i think the rims look better with the rails. I usually hate the rims on the 2500's but on yours they look nice with the black and black flares. Do u happen to know if its easy to change the locking diff fluid? I doubt ill have to take it to the shop ever for maintence because my dads a mechanic and he can work on it im just wondering if its easy. Im not letting him touch the engine though dont worry he seen the 5.3 L display last yr at chicago and his eyes lit up like xmas lights.

Hey has anyone been to the chevrolet.com site and go to silverado. They have thois thing you click on and it says somthing about January3,2000 they are gonna announce something. WHAT IS IT? Any ideas???????? Its driving me nuts only thing i can think of is thats when they begin shipping out the 4 doors. Another possibility is that i won a truck and they are gonna have a pic of me and my new truck on the site haha just a thought dont think itll happen. But seriously any ideas on the big announcement?

    Ryan
  • bluebeastbluebeast Member Posts: 258
Those of you who have the cell phone wiring and/or know where it is. 1. where is it located? 2. is it wired to a built in antenae? 3. does it display anything on the dash when in use (hands free). I have a mobile cell phone but wonder if I could use this cell phone wiring that was on the truck I bought.

The announcement is that the Silverado 4 drs are going to built by Toyota right their in yer home state of Indiana !!!! Seems that the factory isn't to busy making Tundras so a couple assembly lines are gonna build 4 dr Silverado's (only Indigo Blue ones).....sorry Ryan, better pick a new color.

Hopefully you still have some milk and cookies left over from this morning.

I've got a red and black boat, so I'm trying to come up with a color scheme that will match. Something that will look better than a blue ford.
(had blue boat, got new/used red boat). I'm leaning towards black, I haven't had a black vehicle in a few years.

    Tim
Truck looks real nice. I was just looking for some feedback on the locker and suspension, as you said you drove a 1500 Z71 and a 2500, perfering the 2500 for the ride, was curious what suspension gave the best ride, guess it's Z85. I'm going to order an LT so I was curios about the seats. I'm going with the Graphite interior though.

    Take care guys!

I think this has been dicussed already, but has there been a change in the flares on the Silverados. While at the dealer today of the 8 2500 4x4's there were 4 white with black flares, one red with red flares?, one green with green flares?, one blue with blue flares?, and one dark grey with dark grey flares. My question, since when can you get colored flares other than black, pewter, dark grey, carmine red, and gold.
These rigs were fresh off the delivery truck, so I don't think they were dealer painted.
    Any ideas!!!

Have been considereing trading my 98 2wd for 4wd. Found "last of 99" 4wdreg cab LWB Z71 at my local dealer which, I would say, has been sitting there for MONTHS. Found out partially why. !. rear sliding glass leaks. @. A pillars vibrate, even when radio IS NOT loud. 3. The automatic door locks do not disengage when you go to exit the vehicle-what a pain. The dealer was offering me $2000 above trade in value for my truck. Plus a $1000 rebate. Judging from some of the horror stories mentioned here, I will wait till 2001-2002 for a 4 door-BUILT RIGHT!!
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
hey man good idea gotta match the color of truck with color of the boat. I plan on getting the truck first though.
Tim beer? Come on its a weekday. ANd yes i believe u (shaking head NO)that you dont drink.

    Ryan
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
The Z-71 does not come in 2500....so I don't know how that would ride...but when you consider the s. bars already come with it..and the suspension is already heavier...and skid plates are available...what's the difference?

As for Graphite in an LT...the Graphite leather was a little too "black hole" like for me when getting in the seat. The cloth graphite has other colors in the fiber that brighten it up a bit....make sure you see an all leather graghite in person first...if you already haven't.

I would have chose it over Grey...but too dark for me. tan was my first choice....but it looks like orange in person....and tan with Black??...think not.
Med grey seemed the way to go for me....although it gets a little dirty a little too fast some times.....but not bad overall.

I got an idea sounds like you like fire right? Why dont u set your toyota on fire and watch it burn.
How come the toyota guys come in here talking their smack? Do u see me in a toyota post? NO! Why would i have reason to be in one? I think maybe they are researching the silverado because they are to ashamed to admit they are trading in their tundra for a chevy.

The graphite leather is nice in most trucks but the medium grey is the best color for a black truck.

Beast its egg nog and cookies today

You dance around the subject what/when your going to buy a truck like Fred Astaire "dancing in the rain". Let's get a firm commitment here, if you have nailed down everything but the color, flip a coin.

pyrodex, bob259 has just lost his way, he's most likely in his 40's having a mid life crisis and is all confused. Once he comes to his senses he will see the light, and coming out of the light will be the mighty Silverado to pick him up and bring him safely home.

pyrodex, stop clicking your heals together with your eyes closed and saying "I wish my Tundra was as good as the Silverado", your wish is NOT going to come true. I don't care if you are wearing ruby red shoes, I didn't work for Dorthy either. Well, on the bright side at least Toto would fit in the Tundra.

Decided on a 1500 LT 4x4 Z71 Blue truck black flares. I seen a silver and you could see the salt just as good as you could on the dark trucks so why not get what i want right? I love the blue i havent seen one with the flares in person yet. I guess its rare or at least around here it is.
