Hi guys. I ordered a 2000 Silverado 2500 extended cab, 4 door 2wd recently. I ordered mine right before Christmas and was told maybe built in Feb sometime and get it in march. Does that sound about right?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
First off thats a cool name (my name too) Second i hope you arent really expecting it in march cause from the talk in here people are still waiting from last yr for the 3/4 ton's and you also want a 4 door with that its hard enough right now to get an order with a 1500 with the 4th door. I hope you dont mind waiting and have another vehicle to drive

high demand as the 4wd's, so maybe it won't take as long. Did you get the 6.0L or 5.3???
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
if the 2wd arent in demand do you think they are spending time to build them then? Or do u think they are making the 4wd instead to speed up customer orders being fulfilled?????
  • 2000ryan2000ryan Member Posts: 47
I got the 5.3 with 3.73 locking rear end. I work for a Pontiac and Buick dealer, and I ordered mine through my employer, from the local Chevy dealer. (make sense to you?) He seemed to think he could get it by then, but i am with you guys, I am not holding my breath. They ordered as a fleet vehicle, and they said GM has been known to pay more attention to fleet orders. So just hafta wait and see! If it takes longer, then I can save that much more money for the down payment! Gotta go back to work now, see ya!

Just put my name on the list for a 3/4 ton, 2WD, extended cab, 4 door, 6.0L, 3.73 axle. Only 3 dealers in Houston area are taking orders now for 4th door. Latest story from GM rep is that 4 door 3/4 tons go into production March 1, and actual orders will start to be taken from dealers mid-February. My name is first on the list at this dealership. Based on that, truck is supposed to hit my driveway in May. We'll see. Incidentally, paid $200 over invoice, and found pricing to be pretty competitive among 10 different dealers.

the factory offset for Silverado (1999-2000) wheels? Called two local dealers and neither of them knew !! I want to make sure that the wheels I buy have the same offset.

    1/2 ton, 4 x 4, I have on the 5 spoke cast allum. now.
  • mledtjemledtje Member Posts: 1,123
Take your spare out and let the shop measure it. I know it is steel, but the offset is the same.

Best bet is to locate dealer via their web pages if you know name or try www.gmbuypower.com & search that way. There are other avenues as well, auto buy tell, carpoint.com, look at beginning of Edmunds home page there are sites from there to go to.

Don't forget to spec out what it is you want(Edmunds New Truck page) BEFORE you go to these sites, you have to be an informed consumer or pay the price if you don't. The dealers want to make as much as possible on you.

I have a '99 Silverado, Ext. Cab, 2WD, 4.8L with the 3.42 limited slip rear end, and I've noticed that when I turn into my driveway going more than about 5mph, I hear a thunk coming from behind me. To pull up to my house, I turn left into my uphill driveway. I've only noticed the noise when it gets to be about 45 degrees or lower outside.

    Things I've checked out.
    1. It's not the rear seat banging around. The tabs are broken, but it's a different type of noise.

    2. The spare tire. It's nice and tight, I attempt to move it, and the truck moves with it.

    3. I've looked around underneath the truck, and I haven't found anything loose, broken, or leaky.

I would hate to think it's something in the rear end. I've got 17k miles on the truck, and I haven't changed the rear diff fluid.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Ryan

I have seen some leaf spring bushings make noise on some vehicles. Can you bounce the rear end of the truck and duplicate the noise? Sounds kinda like a bushing or something similiar if it is a temp. related problem. good luck

well...I have the article....but I can't access my damn web space for some reason.

When I can post it on the net...i will.

And no...I am not going to re-type it..

It starts out on the subject of hydro forming..and the process and gains...then has a sub topic about the bending issue. There was a problem...and the real problem turned into nasty rumors..including the jack up theory..

when I can access my space...i have the whole article for you to read..

Clunks: Yesterday they changed my transfer case fluid, but it's to soon to tell if it is the
A new steering shaft did fix my steering clunk,
now if I can just get this driveline/spring
clunk fixed I may fall back in love with my truck
    again.

rlangford2, your noise sounds like the springs, or bushing shackles that GM has been having troubles with, I too have that noise and we are slowly making progress on eliminating it, springs and shackles/bushings are next.
  • scottayscottay Member Posts: 91
This is a post from another site, basically installs o-rings on lower leaf:

    >>If your problem is in fact related to the lowest leaf making noise when it contacts the leaf
above it, then here are the respective part numbers for the various trucks:

    1/2 ton models, 4x2 or 4x4 use #15604174, qty 4.
3/4 ton models, 4x2 or 4x4 light duty use #15604175, also qty 4.
    3/4 HD & 1 ton models, 4x2 or 4x4 use #15604176, qty.4.

Remember - this only addresses the clunking leaf issue. For squeaking leafs, I believe
there are replacement leaf springs available. Others have posted here about this. Also, if
your truck is in warranty, be persistent, and the dealer will replace them at no charge for
you. If you're out of warranty, these things run $27 apiece for a hunk of rubber, so in that
case, I highly recommend Neil's solution posted awhile back using heavy o-rings over the
lowest leaf. I did this before I had the dealer fix mine and it worked as well as the GM
    isolators. <<

I understand that their is a GM customer loyalty rebate worth $500 off the price of the vehicle. My in-laws did not receive one in the mail. They bought a GM last year. I understand that if they get the certificate, they can pass it on to me to use on my new Silverado due in next week. How do you get a hold of one of these certificates? They are good through 2/29/00.

    Thanks

Thanks Scottay and Bob259. When I get a chance, I will take it to the dealer and see what they have to allow.

Overall, I am very pleased with my truck. I've had it for 8 months, and I've got 17k miles so far. I have had 2 problems with it. The first was a clunk in the steering. I took it to the dealer, and they adjusted the lower control arms and realigned the truck. Problem fixed. The second one was for torn weatherstripping on the 3rd door. That was also fixed promptly by the dealer.

    Thanks,

    Ryan

So far the only thing I don't like is the mileage. But I expected that. The engine is quiet and has incredible power, especially after driving a 318 for the last 10 years. I have heard a shimmy coming from the right rear of the truck at about 45 mph a couple of times. If I speed up or slow down it immediately dissapears. Any ideas? jim
  • mdw1000mdw1000 Member Posts: 171
First, what exactly is this clunk in the steering? I've noticed a "thump" or "clunk" in my steering wheel at times - not audible, but can feel it in the wheel. Sometimes i even feel it sitting at a light. Mentioned this to dealer, they checked everything out and tightened everything up, but couldn't get it to go away. So far no steering performance problems, but I'm a little concerned. Maybe i'm just being paranoid.

Second, on the transmission shifting differently when cold, it says in the owner's manual that it will do this.

How is the v6-auto, on the reg cab short box.
    Power and gas milege..
  • vince4vince4 Member Posts: 1,268
Yes I agree about the mileage. I was hoping for a little better since it's a new engine design. But it's not a big deal, you don't get a full size 3/4 ton truck for gas mileage. I also drove a 318 for many years, then a Ford 302. Now I get the same mileage and have way more power. Yay! My only complaint with the engine is the rough idle.

The shimmy sounds like a tire. Switch the left & right rears and see if it moves.

Recently took a 5000 mile road trip (all interstate) : I changed the oil & resetted before the trip. Next "change oil" light turned on at 7300 miles. So far the longest interval in my truck's 15K history.
  • bob259bob259 Member Posts: 280
(mdw1000) There were a lot of old posts on the steering clunk. Mine almost felt like something was hitting the steering shaft and/or at times like something in the steering was loose and flopping around. Dealer did all the tightening, etc, but it just got worse. Mine was to the point I told my wife if I was in a accident have the steering checked, it was that bad. There is a new steering shaft design / part number out for the shaft (F shaft I believe) that cures the problem. My dealer has now installed 10+ of them since I found the article an it has cured all the problems in everyones trucks.

The transmission, when the engine and transmission fluid is cold goes into a warmup mode that is supposed to help get the engine, heater, etc. to operating temperature faster. It does this by delaying the 2 - 3 shift to what I would call a annoying level and it feels like it is hang shifting. As soon as everything reachs operating temp. it goes back to normal, annoying but GM calls it normal.

Fuel Mileage: 5.3 4x4 Z71 worst 13.2 (real cold weather) Best 23.7 (Highway only) average for 14K miles around 15.3 which is 1/10 less than my old v6 gave me several trucks ago (during the gas crunch). Like everyone I'd like better, but this is a full 1.5 MPG better than my 97 K1500 with a 350 and it seems to run better. If you think this is bad go read the Tundra forum and see what they are getting with the new Iforce super clean high tech motor they got. If I was them I'd be mad, 4.7l and only getting 14.5 in town and 17.5 on highway trips. I expected a lot more form that motor with all the hype the media has on that vehicle, heck you can get a GM 6.0l and get that mileage and have a bigger truck with more accessories.

I have a 99 ext cab, 2wd 5300. Two weeks after I took delivery, it developed an obnoxious squeak in the front end which the dealer identified as the spring was too large for the pocket. The factory fix was a band-aid that incorporated "spring isolators", a fancy name for a piece of nylon wrapped around the spring. My question is, is anyone aware of a REAL fix from the factory?

I thought i was the only one experiencing this phenomenon.

As of now my truck is in the shop for the 3rd time related to this problem.
They (dealership) have replaced the intermidate shaft. Don't know if it was the "F" shaft.
This cleared the problem for about one week.

My truck has 22K on it. This started occuring @ about 13K. I've had a couple other small problems as well but they have been resolved.
bob259 could you point me to this article you were refering to. I would really appreciate it.
My patience is wearing a little thin on this one.

I'm sorry to hear that others have experienced this problem but @ the same time I don't feel so alone. Misery loves company.

Don't think I'll be providing GM any more guinea pig time on my behalf. My "Rock" of a truck continues to crumble before my eyes.
    Thanks for the posts

Seeing all the various trucks in one place at the L.A. Auto Show is a nice way to confirm that I made the right (actually only) decision in buying a Silverado. The others don't even come close! (excluding other GM products...)

None of the competitors had a back seat that would allow adults to travel farther than a block in comfort; the Tindra especially seemed amazingly cramped even in front. I thought I was in a mid-sized truck. Cute little bed, too.

I will give the Tindra one thing, though ... it has sun visors with the extension to block out more light on the side. The Suburban and Tahoe have it, why doesn't the Silverado? I guess we don't ever drive North or South.

Called the dealer today to make sure they had a new in-dash am/fm/cd for my 2k LS. The display went goofy on mine. They said they don't replace the stereo, they pull it and send it to LA for repair. So I get to drive around with a hole in my dash until it's back! I expressed my opinion of this and he said no dealer stocks them because they cost $1000 each. Wow, you could get a heck of an aftermarket head unit for that. I think I'll call another dealer.
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
The funny thing is that if a repair is needed, they don't do it ... at least in the past, they just send you a new one.

The cost for a replacement top-line model in my '91 S-10 was around $250 as I recall (out of warranty; I decided to have a local repair shop do it for $60)

It might be possible to deal directly with the "service" center. Ask the dealer for the number.

I have read the other posts about this problem, and I still am not sure if this is what is going on with my truck.

At slow speeds, mostly over bumps (like pulling into the drive) I have a clunk/rattle coming from hub/wheel area on both sides of the truck. This does not occur at higher speeds Everything has been tightend twice and the problem (nuisance) is not solved. I have even pulled the wheels and checked everything out. The only thing I could find that my be duplicating the noise is the brake caliper and rotor "floating." The noise sounds similar, but the truck did not do this until about 5,000 miles.

For you guys that have had the steering shaft replaced; what did your noise/clunk sound like and when did it occur? Also, if you have the part # for the new shaft and the link to the article regarding this topic, I would greatly appreciate it.
  • bob259bob259 Member Posts: 280
kanton - I am willing to bet it is your steering shaft. What you describe is some of the same symptoms I had/experienced. I to had the front wheels off looking for a loose caliper, hub or steering component. Take it to the dealer and tell him you know there is a problems with steering shafts and you have the same symptoms and need a replacement shaft ordered. BELEIVE ME!!!! this will fix your problem. In the archives you will find a post from me with the part number, however I'm told by the dealer that they just issued a new part number for the replacement.

To help I just called the parts department here and I'm told the it is a upper/intermediate steering shaft old part number 26049343 and the new part number is 26083324. Don't be surprised if you have to wait awhile to get it, they have 3 on B/O here right now and I waited 4-6 weeks as they were on National Backorder.

Thank you for your help. I really appreciate it. I am going to call the dealers in the area to see if they have the part, if not I will just take it in and have them order it. We have about 7 Chevy dealers within 30 minutes of each other here, so hopefully I will be taken care of sooner than later. Thanks again for your help.

thanks for the advice! Sounds like you had an audible noise; mine doesn't have that, just a "thump" feeling in the steering wheel. Is that how yours started out?

Does anyone know if the 140 ft/lbs figure for lug nut torque listed in the owner's manual is correct? That seems awfully high.

Some people have posted that the (KNP) Transmission Oil Cooler is not included in the Z82 package.

All the Canadian models will have the transmission oil cooler included. I phoned GM Canada today & was told that my truck will have it.

The following is everything that is included in the Z82 package.
Weight Distributing Platform Hitch (includes H.D. 8-lead wiring harness with 7-way sealed connector) & (KNP) Transmission Oil Cooler.

All Canadian model also come equiped with a engine block heater (n/c) also!
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
No, they posted that it WASN'T included for a short period of time in early 1999 due to a parts shortage. Some are part of a campaign to get them installed free of charge by a dealer; others had the price of the package lowered by a certain amount to cover (supposedly) the missing cooler.

mdw1000, No it was both, being felt in the wheel and heard. If I'd have to choose probably more felt in the wheel then heard.
  • mdw1000mdw1000 Member Posts: 171
maybe I'll wait a little longer when it gets more audible, rather than just go into the dealer to have them tell me they can't find anything. Right now I really can't hear anything, and I don't think my wife has noticed it when driving, although I let her drive it only rarely :)

  • etohetoh Member Posts: 13
An earlier post said that the 5300 was averaging 15.1 or MPG. Thats about 2.5 MPG more than I'm getting with the 6.0 and less than 1000 miles on it. Well worth the bigger engine in my opinion.

I don't think its the tires. I thought it was coming from the left but now I think its just coming from the rear. It only happens when the engine is at low RPM for the gear its in. Once I put any torque on the drive line it dissapears. By the way, its barely noticeable. But I should expect perfection for the price.

Have you put a dash-board cover or seat convers in?
  • afs11afs11 Member Posts: 86
    Ryan,

Have you ordered your truck yet??? If not why??? Are you still going to select the Indigo blue over Light pewter (a much nicer color, pewter has about 5 shades).

My boss has a 1999 X/C 4wd that is Indigo blue. It's a nice color, but it really shows the dirt!

I still think that you should get the LT over the LS. I'm sure that you can wheel & deal for a better price on a LT. I know that there is a $2500-$3000 dollar difference between models.

My boss has the LT model, the seats are great! I didn't want to have leather either but after driving in the full feature seat, my mind was made up! You won't reget it!

I finally have a build date! I have a question for you folks who have yours. I wanted to order an engine oil cooler and was told it comes standard with the 6.0 and the z85 package. I know the tranny cooler comes with the suspension package but I am not sure the dealer knows what he is talking about in regards to the engine oil cooler. Any info??
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
No havent ordered going to middle march due to me having money tied up in a few accounts till july.
I am going to order the LS ext 4x4 indigo blue with black flares cant find to many of those. A salesman tried to find one and closest one to the one i wanted was in missouri or montana i think it was like 1500 mls away.

    I have a 2000 2500 LT

I too wanted both coolers...and when the tow packsge was selected on the dealers screen....the oil cooler showed N/C for the price.....indicating it was in the package?

when the truck came...the KC4 oil cooler was not in the option list....BUT it IS on the truck...as well as the tranny cooler..
