also, I can not believe they are going to stop building these sport tracs. we are all ready in the next model year, I cant believe they are going to start building 2002's
it just may be that the plant is closing for 2 weeks for their summer vacation, then the entire plant will start working on all 2001's models
Mel
I guess I jumped the gun by inferring that the next run of STs would be 2002 models. Ford wouldn't be able to sell them until Jan 1, 2001 if that were the case. All my dealer said was that there would be a temporary production shutdown & the next run would be unchanged. I asked if the 2002 would be different & he said no. When they'll change over the model year is anybody's guess.
As for Ford changing the ST within the year, I doubt it. Normally, major changes do not occur with a new vehicle until years later UNLESS there are big problems. Isn't the average for big changes every 5 years? I can see them maybe adding a few small changes/enhancements but otherwise I don't see it happening. Besides, aren't you ST owners THRILLED with your new vehicles? I know that we are.
I finally got my ST last week, Thursday. Over the last two days, this area experienced heavy rainfall and the plastic liner above the rear seat, behind the driver began to leak. An earlier post described how the dealer resolved the problem. I believe it was around post # 370.
on the Ford home page, I believe.
ST. I believe that what your sales people are calling a stop in production is Ford's July shutdown. For two weeks in July all Ford plants shut down. This is for maintenece and major repairs. Ford does this every year.
See ya,

WOW! You must be so aggravated at this point. I know that I was and we ordered our ST back on February 28th w/out the tonneau (but with just about everything else) and just took delivery a little over two weeks ago. I would ask to speak with the general manager at this point. I don't know of any email for the plant. There has got to be someone who can give you an answer and perhaps you can get something from the GM. You must feel totally disgusted at this point. I would push your dealer to give you something extra for being so patient and waiting so long. In fact, a year of free oil changes, tire rotation, etc. may help. But then again, if you've been waiting as long as you have, no number of oil changes is going to make you happy until you receive that ST (which, by the way, you are going to REALLY love when you do get it). Show them this bulletin board and all of the folks who ordered their ST's and have already taken delivery. How do they explain that?
I wish I had better words of wisdom other than that. Although I am not you, I did experience similar frustrations waiting for delivery which was supposed to take 6-8 weeks but turned into something like 12 weeks. Hang in there and good luck to you!
I've got the grill guard (by WAAG) that's black, and the ST Explorer step bars I've seen are only gray to match the lower molding that's on the ST. Don't want to get too many color variations since my ST is Island Blue.
Any and all input is welcomed and appreciated. Thanks, Bootscoot
Bootscoot--I like the grey...but I ordered the sport group and will have the grey step bars..I also have the grafite interior and think it will look cool....I will have the deep wedgewood blue...but am considering getting the bug guard and the soft tonneau---which I believe will both be black...but I don't think that will be to much, although my ST will be a darker shade and will blend better--still, If I were you I'd go with the factory. You said it yourself--they will match your molding.
RE:Greenwade:I have also heard all the ford plants have a 2 week shut down in July...from what I understand all production is stopped, and even if orders are still being taken..they will have to add extra time on. I have had great success with the Customer Service giving me dates--I would call them or get on to your dealer. A few other writers here got tired of waiting and went to other dealers or found one somewhere and got the dealers to trade...a few options..hope that helps.
I can see where the gas cap cover is going to rub. I have already warned the dealer ship about this. I haven't noticed the low speed shimmy yet. I am just in heaven now that it's here.
My ST has the shimmy and the gas door rub?
Thanks again Craig for your suggestion in writing to the CEO. I already did that and hope that something will happen soon.
my sport trac was ordered 5/2 and as of last week it's on the way to the dealership which is in cheney wa. the difference in cost between the dealers in sw washington and the one in cheney was around $650. for that amount, i don't mind paying $75 for a flight to spokane and taking a nice leisurely trip back to the vancouver, wa area.
i have already alerted the dealership to fix the gas door rub and power steering shimmy before i pick it up. here's hoping.....
Per the Thursday's report from my dealer & today's from Ford CS, the build date of my ST WITH the cover is 6/19. The tonneau's availability date to the parts counter was not indicated. I'm hopeful that we'll both, and anyone else waiting for their orders, be reporting joyful news within the next few weeks.
A list of problems I have had with my ST:
1. hard starting and stalling - fuel pump failure
2. heavy vibation when turning steering wheel at low speeds - fixed several times, fix only lasted 24hrs, supposed to be related to 16" wheels and pully size on PS pump (the dealership service manager told me he had seen this on Eddie Bauer units for over 2 yrs)
3. plastic accents break/fall off - notepad clip, rear setbelt mount covers, armrest,etc...
4. firewall leaking
5. starter dragging
6. AC vaccuum vent making loud bangs when change settings
7. electrical - runs at almost 14VDC most of the time - repeatedly turned off my celphone and caused problems with other accessories
8. fuel gage - put in 16gal at empty, shows 1/2, then 100mi later shows F, some times get 22.5gal into it (lists as holding 20.8???) some times get 280mi range, sometimes 420mi, never get better that 20mpg, usually 14mpg or less
9. rear windows really slow to roll up - due to the fact that the factory didn't bother to tighten the bolts holding the glass to the actuator arms.
10. If there is ANY moisture on the roof, you can expect it to come in the rear sliding window if you have it open - this is a design oversight, not a defect per se. Also would have been nice if the rear window worked like the rest - sometimes 1/2 way up is preferred to vent or full down.
I'll never own another Explorer series.
BTW - Ford has been difficult to deal with, and I don't really trust my dealership, but they are finally trying to do the right thing by moving me into a new SuperCrew Lariat with all of the options I was supposed to have with the ST. My biggest beef in all of this is that I could never make contact with anyone at Ford corporate.
The SportTrac is probably a great vehicle, and I was willing to take a risk in a like for like replacement, but the dealer couldn't even get one with the same options without custom ordering it.
I hope the SuperCrew, as its big brother, with fit the concept as well as the ST did for my needs, and I expect less problems, as it is more an F-150 with wider rear doors than the ST was an explorer with a bed tacked on...
and if you were wondering - I am a loyal Ford customer/fan - the SuperCrew with be my 6th Ford, 3rd F-150. I wouldn't be caught dead driving a Chevy.
Just curious, someone reported a service bulletin that requires replacing the Power steering hose. Do you know was that ever done to your ST.
Do you go to the same gas station every time because it sounds like they have one of those gizmos installed that rip you off. The reason I say that is because you indicated you got 22.5 gallons into a 20.5 gallon tank.
I saw a very interesting story on TV about reprogrammed computerized gas pumps. They are very sneaky about it too. They have key fobs that turn on and off the cheat in case the state inspectors show up. And the pumps are program not to cheat anything less than 6 gallons of gas. Thats because the inspectors use 5 gallon cans most of the time to check the pumps accuracy. It will always pump 5 gallons correctly but it will skim you from 6+.
I can't see ANY way but being cheated that you could drive to a gas station and still fit 2+ extra gallons in it, filler pipe included.
As far as the electrical system is concerned 13.8 VDC is normal charging voltage. Im not sure what you used to measure the output but if its off .2VDC thats not much. I can't believe your electronics were upset by .2VDC
Good luck with your super crew. I was told at the auto show the new super crew will have the same rear window as the ST so get your order in now if you don't like that window.
Anyone remember (or try to order) the $590 hard tonneau cover depicted in the brochure (and discussed in the owners manual!)? I sure do. With money literally burning a hole in my pocket for that ( and many other options) I was told for that and numerous other accessories, sorry, we can't sell it to you "Ford doesn't have that in the parts system".
Today I got a call back from my dealer informing me that Ford has published the parts number and price and can now accept orders for the hard tonneau cover for a whopping $1034!... nearly twice as much (as is currently listed at the FORD website). This is the most flagrant act of price gouging I have heard of outside of a german car factory. Needless to say, even the dealer's Part Dept rep was ashamed at the price. ( I suppose Ford might have a separate engine in that tonneau cover. That might begin to account for the incredibly rediculous price). At that price all I can say is Roll-top... here I come.
The vehicle is indeed comfortable, well appointed, handles nicely and is truly fun to operate. As many have noted, it is a nearly perfectly executed design for the hybrid SUV/pickup and unless you plan on using it for real work (get an F-150 Supercrew for that!), no other hybrid even comes close for ride and comfort. The 4.0L 6cyl is adequate.
Having read numerous reviews noting the high cabin noise in the SportTrac (due to the large side mirrors, roof rack, etc), I was prepared to accept a bit of noise. I was unprepared however for an irritating ever-present whistling at highway speeds. I'm not sure if this noise is coming from the roof rack, forward edge of the bed, drain holes in the bed or the cargo cage. I would be interested in reading other owners' observations about this noise. When I take my ST in for its 1st service, I plan on mentioning this to see if it can be isolated and if there is anything that can be done to correct it. Who knows... maybe that $1034 tonneau cover is the fix...LOL ;^)
Bottom line, except for the irritations above, I'm darn happy with my ST. As an owner of seven Ford Trucks, SUV's and cars, it's disappointing to see the company adopting Jaguar-like pricing policies for it's Ford Truck options and accessories.
Hope this helps.
I just ordered the slip in vent visors from weathertech, $79 for a set of four. They are made specifically for the ST. www.weathertech.com
The owner/dealer with whom I spoke last week advised that although he thought he could initially place an order for the manual transmission for delivery in August, he has now been informed that it will not be available until November. The likelihood of it being available before then is that it will not. If anything, Ford may push back the date of its availability.
We are awaiting patiently until October when we can place our order. It is a bit of a hardship for us, but we do not wish to compromise as it will be a vehicle that we intend to hold onto for a long period of time. Hence, should anyone have any more current information regarding its availability, we would be most interested.
P.S. What is the R4?
Tom
CRAIG - Do have any numbers at the company that I can call and find out the status. Do you have yours yet? How long did you wait if so?
I'm sending another letter today overnight to the CEO again. There was no response from last weeks letter.
Thnaks
Thanks

My roof liner has no moulding either.
For me, sea kayaking is my main summer passion & the ST's bed (with drain holes) & lockable tonneau would hold the wet & dirty items much better than a car trunk or SUV rear cargo area.
Well, enough of me justifying why I & others are so intent on the tonneau cover...
donna lee,
In addition to the dry weight, the folding design of the Ford cover gives a major mechanical advantage for any individual moving the cover (compared to a one piece design of similar weight). All of the folding cover's weight would be inches from your body (the pictures of the folded cover look to be 6" to 8" thick when folded). Storage of the folding cover at home or in the bed (with the tailgate down) is another advantage I see.

Also, A.R.E. is also producing a cover (out very soon) retailing for about $780. It is one of those one piece, rear opening fiberglass panels with struts. I suspect all of the aftermarket folks will come out with their versions soon as well. Hope this helps.
