You are very incorrect my friend. There is no such thing as "Marta" in the Washington, DC area. I am assuming you are referring to public transit. FitzMall is off North Frederick Ave (I believe its 'Avenue") down the street from Lakeforest Mall. There is public transit via The Ride-On bus but that is it. MetroBus does not run in that area as far as I remember. Now there could be a MARC Commuter Rail station nearby because there is a Gaithersburg Station but Gaithersburg is extremely large so I haven't a clue as to the proximity of that station to FitzMall.

    Thanks neno...

This color is becoming my number one choice :)

I have no idea if it's implemented like your Honda's, but the Camry's dealer-installed XM is of a noticably lesser sound quality than the CD player or an mp3 player plugged into the AUX jack. I'm not saying that it sounds bad, it doesn't. It sounds a bit better than a standard FM station. But it's certainly not comparable to a 192kbs mp3 quality. You get used to it quickly, but if you switch back and forth between the ipod/CD/XM, the difference in sound quality is rather obvious. And I'm hardly an audiophile.
  • blindmantooblindmantoo Member Posts: 139
You're right - the XM sounds terrible in the Accord. That's how we ended up ordering the Camry! We were ready to buy the '06 Accord and went for the final test drive to decide between the V6 EX manual 6sp tranny and the automatic - both w/ NAV. I already had the deals negotiated - both at invoice - but since it was going to be my wife's car, I wanted her to drive both and then make a decision. (She currently drives a Maxima V6, 5sp manual, Bose, add-on XM, etc.)

After driving both, she said that the stereo was awful in both - the one w/ 6sp manual had an upgraded, top-of-of-line (for Honda) stereo. Even the XM sounded read bad (but the system in my Odyssey sounds great for a factory system). We ended up leaving and driving accross the street to a Toyota dealer and spotted the new Camry. This was mid March - advertising hadn't even begun on the new model. It was the test drive of the V6SE that sold us - we still haven't heard one w/ XM working. Ours should finally arrive in mid-June.

To address the interface of the aftermarket pieces, here is the progression in sound quality:

FM modulator (self-contained in most aftermarket models) > easy to connect, but most limiting in sound quality - as good as your FM quality at best, usually not as good because of very limited frequence range caused by the transmitter.

RCA connection > better than FM modulator, but still an analog connection - about as good as good MP3 quality.

Digital connection > limited availability aftermarket - some OEM systems employ this technology. Quality is as good as satellite can get. Odyssey has this connection (so does Accord I believe - but the quality of the Accord stereo is so bad, you get no benefit from it).

One concern I have on the Camry is reception - absolutely no problem in any of my other five radios. (For the record, I was a car audio installer and shop foreman long ago). Placing the antenna on the rear package shelf does not use the roof as part of the antenna - as it should. Also, if travelling directly south, the roof line could block the signal. If this is the case, I will mount it on the roof. I have the same concern for the NAV antenna - it also should be on the roof. I guess I'll find out soon enough. I can't get any good answers on this forum about signal quality for either the XM or NAV. You can be sure that I'll give a detailed report when we get out V6SE - I have a great frame of reference in my Odyssey - and both NAV & XM have absolutely perfect reception. I will expect the same from Toyota.

Thanks for the feedback - I'm bummed. I was hoping it was going to be better than the Accord's sound - sounds like it may be similar. I agree that even in the Odyssey the CD sounds better, but at least the XM is very good.

When I mentioned the "MP3 like (@ 192kbs) sound quality, I was referring to the sound in my home system where the Polk unit is connected to a Harman Kardon 5.1 receiver through a true digital connection. I work from home and have it on XM all day, every day. The low frequency definition is CD like, at higher frequencies you can notice how the compression impacts the dynamic range a bit.
  • korfdieselkorfdiesel Member Posts: 9
Oh, the XM sounds infinitely better on the Camry, I promise. It just doesn't sound as good as the AUX jack or the CD player, which sound really amazing and set quite the standard for the satellite to live up to.

The Accord's stereo was a major turnoff for me as well. If that is your point of reference, you will be overwhelmingly pleased.

How's the XM reception? Does it ever cut out?
  • kiawahkiawah Member Posts: 3,666
Oh correct (been a while since I was up there),

It's called the MARC MTA train,.....not Marta, it's the Metropolitan Grove Station. It's about 1/2 mile as the crow flies to Fitzmall, but I-270 runs directly between the station and Fitz so it's just under 2 miles via the roads. Exit 11 off of I-270. Metro-Grove is on the Brunswick Line which runs to Union Station M-F. Do google search on MARC.

Perhaps a friendly salesman will make that 2 miles part of your 'test drive' :) if you don't need the exercise.

"You cannot just plug it into tha auxillary port. You will need to run an antenna wire also and that can get messy"

True, but running an antenna is no big deal. Most people think you need to place them on the outside of the vehicle, which isn't true. My wifes' HondaPilot has it installed inside the dash where the tweeter goes. On my G35, I just placed it on the rear shelf. For the Camry, Im not sure yet, probably on the dash somewhere. Its only 1.5x1.5 inch antenna.
  • mookie5mookie5 Member Posts: 22
The dealer will not be able to pick me up at the airport, the traffic will be prohibitive at 3pm. I will likely take the MARC train to Union station, then either the Redline to Shadygrove or the MARC to Germantown. The dealer will then pick me up from there. Will complete any paperwork, check into nearby hotel and on to the Dogfish Head Ale house. Then CapitalCity Brewing the next day. Oh yeah, might as well see the National Mall after the fine beer consumption is over.
  • blindmantooblindmantoo Member Posts: 139
Actually it's not that hard to mount it on the roof. I'll post pics from my wife's Maxima over the weekend and show how to do it. In a nutshell - I mounted the small XM magnetic antenna (it's black & so is the car) centered, just above the rear window. I ran the wire inside the weatherstrip (a bit tedious) down to the trunk, through the trunk to the back seat area, along the edge (under the plastic panels) and up to the front. It survived a summer and winter w/ no issues.

It's MARTA in Atlanta, METRO in DC. I'd just fly into Dulles and take a cab. It's about 30 miles to Gaithersburg from Dulles.

If you fly into National, you could take the METRO to Gaithersburg. Lakeforest Mall is about 6 miles from the Shady Grove METRO station. A long walk... a short cab ride.
  • mookie5mookie5 Member Posts: 22
Flying into BWI (cheapest). I don't have a problem taking a cap the 48 mi to Gaithersburg, but Ive been told traffic is a nightmare. Though I don't know how bad it could be as compared to Houston. Ill just do what the dealer tells me to do, take the train.

It does cut out on me occasionally, but only for a few seconds. I just moved to a very small town and there seem to be a couple of spots that must block the signal because it happens every time I'm there. It recovers very quickly though.

I should add that all of my sound quality responses are based on the upgraded JBL system.
  • babyrocketbabyrocket Member Posts: 54
Pictures (and instructions!) would be very helpful, as I'm planning to move my XM antenna to the roof centered above the rear window. Does anyone know if there is a sharkfin antenna shell that will fit over the stock XM antenna without affecting reception? I'm thinking of something like this:

  • blindmantooblindmantoo Member Posts: 139
The only place mine has ever cut out (on the Odyssey w/ roof mounted antenna) - same place twice - was travelling east/west through WV along the edge of a cliff (to the south of my vehicle). I know the road had turned e/w because I had the NAV screen on. This makes sense since the satellites are all in the southern sky, therefore, along the base of the cliff the signal would be blocked. Seems strange that anything in a small town would block it.

There is no such 07 Camry color as "Magnetic Blue" so either you have "Magnetic GREY" or "BLUE Ribbon Metallic".
  • ix1is1ix1is1 Member Posts: 55
give him a break, i'm sure he means blue ribbon metallic
  • jose1962_jose1962_ Member Posts: 22
    actually i bought both colors

It is still messy since it requires connecting and disconnecting 3 wires. Antenna, auxillary and power unless you plan to leave it always connected and sitting out all the time as a theft target.
  • mookie5mookie5 Member Posts: 22
I plan on leaving it connected. Were not talking about a Rolex sitting on the dash, its a $38 sat radio tucked away in a cubby hole.

Let's see you try to stuff the XM player and all the wiring cable rat's nest behind that little cubby hole door.

Wondering if we, camry owners, can actually see the transmission shifting from 1 to 6?
  • motownusamotownusa Member Posts: 836
I know the Mazda6 has a display that shows what gear you are on but I believe the Camry doesnt have this feature, at least my 03 Camry doesn't.
  • fsowirlesfsowirles Member Posts: 195
Nope, the only time you will see the gears is when you switch to manual mode...then it is displayed on the dash. Of course, that makes on wonder if there is a way to 'customize' it to always display. I mean if the capability and equipment is in place, it is probably not too difficult to make it always show.
  • mookie5mookie5 Member Posts: 22
"All this trouble and you are saving how much?"

About $2100. And its not about saving, its about getting the car I want. Your more than welcome to try and find one for me in Texas. I couldn't, the dealer couldn't. If you read the previous post, you'll see that I searched dealers in Nashville, Memphis, STLouis, Chicago, (Atlanta, Florida as well). Fitzmall had 2, thats it. I could have it shipped and that would be fine, but Ive never been to DC, so there ya go. One more thing, you can't order a Toyota (according to written como from Toyota) If you could, then Id be driving an SE with a MT now.

    Yes, watch your Tachometer.
  • blindmantooblindmantoo Member Posts: 139
:P You can order a Toyota. Toyota Customer Service told me you can't, but I did - and it will be built the week of June 5th. I ordered it through Tansky Toyota in Columbus, Ohio. It is taking about 12 weeks, but it is exactly what I wanted: V6SE, Black, Charcoal Leather pkg, Moonroof pkg, Stability Control, XM, NAV, All Season tire option, floor mats - and NO rear spoiler.

They had to provide Toyota w/ a copy of my order and deposit check ($500). It is a long wait, but hopefully it will be worth it.
  • dolfan1dolfan1 Member Posts: 218
Yes, I've used the search function in the forum about Ipods but I'm still not clear about it, and not well versed in such things. (I just bought my first Ipod this week - plan to purchase Camry w/JBL this summer).
Two questions = 1. Will I be able to use my Ipod in the Camry (compatible?) and 2. If so, what additional hardware will I need to purchase to do so?
  • mookie5mookie5 Member Posts: 22
"but I did - and it will be built the week of June 5th"

thats good to hear... this is what Toyota sent me:

We apologize; we are not equipped to take special orders for specific vehicles. Vehicle allocation is based on the geographical area in which they are marketed. Toyota dealerships and distributors are prepared to take your request and make every attempt to obtain the desired vehicle.

If the dealership is unable to locate the vehicle of choice, they may submit a preference request for your desired vehicle. This preference request does not guarantee you will receive the vehicle with the exact options requested, and may create an extended wait-time
  • jaxs1jaxs1 Member Posts: 2,697
The order probably isn't going to go through. Your "order" is likely to end in disappointment and heartache in 12 weeks unless a car like that was going to be built anyway and they are simply rerouting it to your dealer.
  • blindmantooblindmantoo Member Posts: 139
"Preferenced" is the term used by my dealer also. It took weeks before I was notified that the order had been accepted, and was preferenced. Then it took weeks until I received a date for the build. They had to use one of their "allocated" vehicles and (my guess is) wait until that configuration was being run on the line. I was told that black is not a "common" color (like titanium) and the big hold-up was the NAV on a SEV6.

Bottom line is that Toyota Customer Service is programmed to say that custom orders are not possible - but a willing dealer can get it done.
  • blindmantooblindmantoo Member Posts: 139
From jaxs1: "The order probably isn't going to go through. Your "order" is likely to end in disappointment and heartache in 12 weeks unless a car like that was going to be built anyway and they are simply rerouting it to your dealer."

The car is now showing on the list of "allocated" vehicles at the dealership. They were able to delete the spoiler after it showed on their list (about two weeks ago). The new allocation list now shows the vehicle w/o the spoiler.

You may be right, but I'm now feeling comfortable since it's on the list. They expect it at the dealership around June 15th. I negotiated back in mid March before the advertising started, so it was worth the risk to wait. Good price & fair trade value - and they've assurred me that my trade value will not change because of the wait.

I've bought enough new vehicles to know that I should expect the unexpected - my fingers are crossed! But I'm also prepared to fight any deviation from the agreed on deal. I've got dated documentation from every meeting, call and discussion. I've even kept their phone messages on a micro-cassette --- Not that I didn't trust them, but I am covering my butt.

    Dolfan,
Yes you can plug an IPOD in the new 2007's. Just go to Radio Shack, and buy a cable (male to male) which fits the IPOD. Sorry I don't have the p/n, but I just walked in and said I needed a cable which plugs into the IPOD, and the cable has that same male plug on both ends. Cost just a couple bucks. The store I walked into had both a 1' and a 6' cord, and I bought the 6' which allows the IPOD to easily reach the back seat if desired. Take your earphones w/plug if you want to make sure, but it's a standard plug size.
  • dolfan1dolfan1 Member Posts: 218
Thanks for the reply. By the way, do you know if that also charges the Ipod or just allows it to play?

([grunt] Must ... restrain ... Fist-of-Death...) Thanks for the tip - I've been a posting member on BITOG for over 3 1/2 years. :)

The positive side is that the vehicle you 'ordered' is not an odd configuration. The question about 'preferencing' is just that, if a vehicle of that type is built you have first preference. They wouldnt build an unusual one of a kind vehicle though.

You are right a willing dealer can work the system a little. A willing dealer however couldn't mix and match items within a couple of packages to create a 'custom' package just for your vehicle. That's just not possible.

Does anyone know why the Hybrid does not include fog lights?? Thanks
  • bobgwtwbobgwtw Member Posts: 187
I "ordered" an XLE V6 May 1. Was quoted 10-12 weeks for delivery; but the salesman said it could be as little as 6 weeks.

They tell me they can enter a "build" order; but moniter what is is the pipeline from both Japan & the US. If they spot my specific car already produced they will try to work a trade with the dealer slated to receive it; and truck it from the port to my dealership.

Not exactly How it works just want my car ASAP.
  • spiff72spiff72 Member Posts: 179
Judging by these photos, I am thinking there are no fog lights:

Yes there are none. Why?.. No clue.
  • ix1is1ix1is1 Member Posts: 55
When did you place your order? I placed mine on Apr. 5 and I havn't received a build date yet, thanks.
  • blindmantooblindmantoo Member Posts: 139
Sounds pretty similar to my situation. They said it could be 4 - 8 weeks originally, thinking that somewhere in the pipeline this vehicle was being built and they would be able to trade for it. Unfortunately that wasn't the case - so it's ending up about 12 weeks. Seems weird waiting this long - Kinda like we didn't really buy a car.
  • blindmantooblindmantoo Member Posts: 139
We placed the order on about March 22. I think it was about two weeks ago when it was confirmed that it had a build "week". The district manager (not sure if the title's right) told the dealer's general manager a few days prior to that that they were getting one of their "special builds" in the next allotment - they called to tell me that they were pretty sure it was mine that was being built --- It ended up being my order thank god.
