I like the sporty appearance of the chrome dual exhaust tips tucked up under my bumper. The added tone and any performance I get out of it is just a bonus. Reminder: the 70 series Flowmaster IS pretty quiet...so, it's not just to be heard.

My truck is going into the dealership to fix a very loud noise in the dashboard. It sounds like it is coming from the gas pedal/ brake pedal (a squeaking & rubbing sound) but after taking it to the shop, I was told that GM has a bulletin to all dealers about this problem.

It will take 4 to 5 hours to install a small insulation pad somewhere in the middle of the dash to stop this noise.

I hope this helps anyone who has this problem.

P.S. About shocks, I have the Edelbrock IAS shocks & really like them.

The Edelbrock IAS, Monroe Reflex & Rancho RSX shocks all do the same type of damping.

Mine has a helicoil type insert from the factory, didn't even notice during the first couple oil changes. Assume all of 'em are that way. Anybody else notice?

    Wow!

Your diagnostic response to thrashers post was just well, I don't know what to say.
Are you telling us that a 2.5 vs 3.0 exhaust tip will affect the performance of our " Z71 Race Trucks "?

I have asked several times about the Edelbrock shocks, what can I expect them to do that the stock shocks arent doing. Also what's up with wanting your foglights on all the time, they are FOG lights not running lights. Also what is the problem with the doorlocks, they lock and unlock automaticly what more would you want them to do.Not trying to be a smart*#@#, just wondering.By the way my truck is a 00 1500 LT Z71 excab sb.
    Thanks

  • thrashersthrashers Member Posts: 14
I don't know anything about the Edelbrock shocks. I do know that to some people, the truck just looks better at night with the fog lights on. We all understand that they are "fog" lights, but so what. That's a big part of wht this truck is about - looks!

As an 00 Z71 owner, how could you not understand the problem with the door locks? It is a big pain in the [non-permissible content removed]. Yeah, they lock when you hit about 15 mph. I like that. They DON'T unlock when you put the truck in park. They don't unlock when you use the interior door hendel. You're stuck until you turn off the truck. It sucks having to reach for the unlock button everytime you want to get out with the engine running. I have the same truck as you and love it except for a few minor things. I wish it was taller, too.

  • khharriskhharris Member Posts: 51
Thanks for the response, just personal opinion but I think it looks fine with the DRL,I don't want my foglites burned out when I do need them,BTW I think I will replace mine with the more powerful blazers, the stock ones are pretty useless. What you say makes sense about the door locks,I have yet to get out with the truck running and very seldom ever do,you have to admit tho,it'ed be awful hard to lock the keys in it.

    Thanks

Re: Nerf Bars.....I have the Westin CPS bars on my y2k Reg Cab. As Ryan said they are a perfect height for easy entry. They supply a new set of longer "Cab" bolts with the bars which you use to fasten the mounting brackets. They are big time solid. It feels like you could lift the whole truck with the bars.
I also agree, make sure you install front mud flaps to protect the front of the bar from stones being chucked at them. Very happy with them so far.

I have not had time to give to this site for several days, but now I am back. Enjoyed reading all of your postings.

Ryan, I know I am late, but I still want to tell you that I really hate that your new truck got damaged. There are all kinds of people and that is what makes the world as it is. I know how I would have felt if it had happened to mine.

Todd, Agree with you about the door locks. GM should have designed them to unlock when you put the truck in Park. I have almost 1100 miles on mine and I still find the locked doors slowing my exiting from the truck. I am used to opening the door at the same time as I am pulling the key out or even a split second before I pull the key out of the ignition. As soon as I get time I plan to program mine so they do not automatically lock and that should eliminate the inconvenience for me.

Update: I got the fifth wheel wiring harness installed that gm left off at the plant, but included on the invoice. My dealer really did me right. They not only installed the fifth wheel wiring harness, but also cut a hole and ran the wiring and mounted the wiring connector and bracket on the inside of the bed at the location that I wanted. All of this at no cost to me, except for the $22.00 charge on the original order and that did not include the extra wiring and labor to install inside the bed and mounting the electrical connection hookup. The tech spent over two hours doing the work. Very neat job and I am really pleased with it. I need to check out to make certain that it all works while it is fresh on the dealer's mind.

My truck seems to be doing great with no problems at this point. I have used a lot of self control during the break-in period and now I am ready to drive it as I would normally drive. Very pleased with the gas mileage, quiteness, and the response of the 5.3 with the 3.42 ratio when I step on it. Very happy with my choice. Bob

    RE: Dash noise

Ryan, It sounds like you may have the same problem as me? It might be worth your while to ask your service rep to show you the GM bulletin on this. My service rep told me that the noise will echo downwards from the middle of the dash.

I feel your pain about the ding. My wife's '99 Grand Prix GTP got a bad ding almost the same day your truck did. I felt about the same as you, about going to jail and everything. We made it almost a year, parking way out and everything, but some people just don't care about other people's property, plain and simple. At least yours will be fixed. I am still searching for a body shop for mine, as the first couple insisted that it wasn't worth fixing. It is a very noticeable dent and a .5" x .5" area paint chip down to bare metal,so I think it is worth fixing! Especially since the Zaino shine makes it stick out like a sore thumb!

Back on topic though, how did you set up with your dealer to get all the aftermarket accessories installed. Did you just get one bill from the dealer for the truck and all the aftermarket stuff? I want to do basically the same thing as you, and would like to get the $2-3K of wheels, tires, nerf bars, lockers, etc. all included in the price from the dealer. This way my wife won't nag me for spending all the money on the truck, and then turning around a week later and spending another $2-3K on all the other crap. Women can be weird that way! Well, thanks for your help, and hope everything turns out good with your truck.

    guys -
must admit i missed the whole door-lock discussion, but, you DO realize that there are FOUR different programmable sequences for the door locks, right? i feel for those of you who are taxed pressing the "unlock" button EVERY TIME you want to get out. but, if you open your owners manual just once...maybe twice if you want to read it, THEN do it, you'll find instructions on how to program the locks so that the doors will be unlocked when you want them to. 'course, you'll prob'ly complain then because they don't lock automatically at 15 mph, but jeesh...

sorry to vent. my wife is taking my truck to pennsylvania for six days, so i'm beginning to enter withdrawal. i have to lock AND unlock the doors to her car each time i get in and out. no remote keyless entry, cd player...

hmmm...maybe i need to get HER a silverado as a surprise while she's gone...?

My dealership worked directly with rhino linings of fort wayne. I told the dealer what i wanted and he called and got prices. They were actually very low and matched jc whitney and performance products magazine price on a few items (bed railc aps and bug deflector). Ask your salesman if he could have aftermarket stuff added. They just added the total price ($752) to the truck price it came on the invoice as rust protection because they didnt have a designation for it. Good luck

If you have any more questions feel free to ask me.

My 00 2500 has a manual transmission, so the door locks may not operate the same.

    Locks lock at 15mph.

Locks unlock when the key is turned off.

Works great! My 99 Silverado had no unlock features. Autolock at 15mph and unlock by hand, all the time. Believe me the 00 unlocking when the key is turned off is great!

You mentioned that you had seen a sample of the new 2001 interior color "medium neutral II". I'm ordering a 2001 black with pewter bottom. I was going to get the medium grey interior. How do you think the medium neutral would look with the black and pewter exterior.
I'm ordering from a small dealership and my salesman said they were getting allocation for 2001 next week and I should have the truck by late July or early August.
    Thanks for your input.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I would personally go with the medium grey with a black truck its a perfect interior for the black truck. That new neutral color will look nicer in the gold and carmine trucks i dont really know how well it will look in the darker colors, indigo or black. I have graphite in my indigo blue and i like it alot. Not to dark not to light. If i was you though i would go with the medium grey especially since it has been out and you dont know for sure if they will start to make them right away with the neutral or it will have any problems. I have heard no complaints about graphite or medium grey.

Whatever interior you get im sure your truck will look awesome. Good luck with your order.

I went to the dealer today about the windshield molding noise when I go 55 mph or faster. They said what I already knew, the bug shield was causing the molding to flutter. So I told them to fix it. They said it was an after market item and they weren't responsible for it since it wasn't GM installed. He also said the noise could be coming from anywhere. A vibration from the fender or somewhere else. I told the service rep that was a BS answer since they tried to sell me a after market bug shield for $50 more then what I paid for this one the day I bought the truck. The same thing would have happened. It's not my fault, it's GM's. And you can clearly hear it coming from the windshield. Those SOB's wouldn't budge.
I'm not done yet. I think it's letter writing time - to the dealer.
Any other suggestions on getting a dealer to work for the customer?

Go to another dealerships service center you may find some nice people willing to take care of you.
You dont have to go to the one you bought the truck from. Shop around.
Good luck with that i have been lucky with salesman and the bodyshop where i went its great nice people willing to take time to help me out.

Yesterday while cleaning my truck I noticed a small 1cm slit in the passengers leather seat. the slit is just deep enough to be below the surface. does anyone know how to fix this, most importantly keep it from getting any bigger?

    thanks for help
    Kyle
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Should have gotten cloth (sorry im being a smart &$#^#)

Dont they have some sort of stuff you apply like nail polish to seal the slit??? Call up your local auto store and ask them or call a chevy dealership they will know howe to fix it.

When you take your truck in for service, are all the bulletins issued on your truck automatically checked in addition to the service you requested or are the bulletins only referenced if you raise that specific issue the bulletins reference?
  • rwagonerrwagoner Member Posts: 338
Yeah, I'm sure that a slit in the cloth would be much easier to fix. Right.

I did not say that the exhaust tip size adversely affects performance, but I did say that Flowmaster said that. I also said that you should keep in mind that Flowmaster is in the business of selling automotive related products. In my case, the last system I ordered from them included the smaller tips as an intergal part of the package. I think you can read this from Flowmaster as: "The smaller tips are included, and you are going to pay for them like it or not." I still think the larger tips look better.

You guys have me counting the days till I can order my 01 Z71.
It's funny that I know more about the Silverados than some of the salesmen around here (Thanks to you guys). A couple of them didn't know what a composite bed was, and most of them don't know how to turn the auto headlights off. There is more, but I won't get into it.
You guys keep talking, I'll keep reading, then I'll show you some pics of my 01 Z71 Black/Pewter reg cab, short box.
I also got the GMO plan... Can't wait :-)

disc brakes are a piece of cake especially if replacing pads only. drums...will challenge the technically challenged. be careful on those and no matter what anyone tells you...change those wheel cylinders...
  • mgdvhmanmgdvhman Member Posts: 4,157
I am hoping the Neutral looks good....The Oak aka orange...was the only choice for some color combos..(at least to match)...and it was horrible in leather.
Medium grey leather is nice...Graphite leather is horrible...as it's solid..and like a dark hole...now the cloth graphite is nice....due to having several lighter fibers in it.

ARE MX mid-high cap on my 2x4 longbed with standard suspension. The cap weighs about 200 lbs. and I definitely notice a difference in the ride. I think it's smoother with the extra weight. I wonder what it'll do for my mileage. Looks really good, though.

Question: The cap came with an interior light which is wired into the parking lights. There is an On/Off switch at the light but it won't come on unless the parking lights are on. Does anyone know if there is a convenient point to wire it into the cargo box light so that it can be controlled from the dash?
  • 87lion87lion Member Posts: 166
Does any one know of a cargo net for beneath the rear seat in an x-cab? An under seat storage unit might be OK too.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I showed pics of my truck to this guy at my momns work today (she had em to send to her boss in california) well he seen it and his eyes lit up. he just did a suspension kit on a 2000 silverado for a friend. He was like hey how bout you put a lift kit on yours and i was like hmmmmm maybe 2-3 inch hes like yea 2 would look nice. My mom the whole time was like quit it dont put no ideas in his head now it got me thinking. 2 inch would be nice. Shoot id get to work on it with him and pay nothing for installation (just beer). Uh oh maybe after i pay off the $2500 i owe on it ill think more seriously about putting one on.

Finally used the Free oil Change dealer sent
in mail, or competing dealer sent. They
reset a service light ??? and Lube was
surprised when got on lift and still factory
clean underneath. Well while waiting took a
showroom tour, a vette was on the floor, hell
I'm ordering a 2001 in a couple of month, tired
of stewing about it. Sale Rep got features
want, so that free oil was a smart move on
their part. If selling dealer didn't raise
price on truck $500 at signing they would have
more than made up with this deal.

Does anybody know of a good online source for ordering the Westin Nerf bars? $365 is about the best I've seen for the stainless steel. Does that sound right? Make that $356.99 at autotruckstuff.com I just found that.

Hey Ryan, how much is a lift kit & what's involved???

  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I have no idea. The guy did one on his truck 5 inches on his 99 dodge looks real nice but to big for me. I think it was between $500 and $1000 but no labor costs he did it himself. Im sure he will check into it for me im gonna have my mom ask him

I am looking for seat covers for my 2000 - 2500 with the optional buckets. I suspect that they may be expensive having to accommodate the seat belts and the arm rest. Any info on who carries them?

    What is a composite bed?

Crossfire1 - are you aware you can order the 01 now. My small dealership has an allocation coming next week and told me I should receive it in late July or early Aug. I am also ordering the black/pewter combination, with medium grey interior, ext cab Z71. I wanted shinny black fender flares, but since it will come with pewter I am just going to leave them off. Good luck getting yours.

    Denny
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
The composite bed is something new its ill call it plastic a bunch of stuff mixed in lighter than metal and scratches come right off with wax. It takes less time to fix dents and stuff.

They have articles on it surf the web u will come across some.
