Emailed all dealer Internet Sales Managers within 50 miles with my exact requirements (color, equip.) asking for their best price.

Told them I was ready to buy and I would go to NJ on vacation to buy at Fitzmall for $300 over invoice.

Got quotes from $300-$500 over invoice from 4 of the dealer Internet Managers.

Got the price firm + the tax and license in writing, car came in the next day. Went to the dealer and was gone in 15 minutes. No hassle, no arm-twisting to buy extras, no talking to closers, etc.

and this was the first week the '07 Camry came out in Seattle.

It was a Japan made Camry.

I have no rattles, noises, hesitation or cruise control surging.

Quiet and smooth with good gas mileage with 4,300 miles all ready.

Thanks for your reply. I will see if I can get them to do something similar. Right now I had them order me one because there isn't any LE manuals around.

How can you tell if the car is going to be made in Japan? Where else do they make Camrys?

I have an email into Fitzmall too to see what they would quote me. I haven't signed any papers or put down a deposit yet. Just had them submit my order and they told me what they were willing to do. How can I find out the invoice on it? :)

Hello, I just read a post on the Toyota Camry: Problems & Solutions forum about the 07 camry manual tranny having severe hesitation problems. The post was titled 2007 Toyota Camry SE Hesitation...Danger!

IF YOU ARE DRIVING A 2007 CAMRY WITH A FOUR CYLINDER, 5-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION, AND ARE EXPERIENCING SERIOUS HESITATION AND POWER LAG, PARTICULARLY FROM A STANDING START AND/OR AT LOWER SPEEDS, I URGE YOU TO READ THIS POST CAREFULLY, AND TO RESPOND IMMEDIATELY BY CALLING TOYOTA AT THEIR TOLL-FREE NUMBER, AND FILE A COMPLAINT.

Have you experienced this? I just ordered a LE with Manual transmission and now I am scared! I am wondering if I should cancel my order! Please advise. Thanks!

"How can you tell if the car is going to be made in Japan? Where else do they make Camrys?"

You can't - nor do you have any input in the matter. Most Camrys sold in the U.S. are built with U.S. sourced parts at Toyota's sprawling Georgetown, Kentucky assembly plant.

Look on fitzmall website. They show the dealer invoice on all their cars.

Read the article in todays business section of the New York Times.

Thanks! Sounds like they are at least trying to deal with the problems. I am hoping I won't have any but I didn't know that Toyota was having quality issues when I placed my order.
  • mbolivermboliver Member Posts: 55
I will look again. I didn't see how to look at a break down of the invoice costs last time I checked. I saw they gave a whole number of the invoice costs but none of the Camry's out on their website right now fit what I am looking for. I'll see if I can drill down further to find a break down of the invoice cost on their website. Thanks
  • mbolivermboliver Member Posts: 55
Do they only build the first few of a new model year in Japan? And do you think it matters on the quality of the car where it's built? I would think a Camry is a Camry whether it's built here or there. Do you agree?
  • mbolivermboliver Member Posts: 55
I am looking at Fitzmall...so they list the following for a model:
    Delivered Internet Price: $22,349

    Delivered Value Price: $22,718

    Factory Invoice: $21,849

    MSRP: $24,467

So you would tell the dealer you would pay $22,149 (Factory Invoice + 300) for it? Would Fitzmall even sell it to you for that or do they only go for the Delivered Internet price? Right now the best I could get them to do is $1900 over invoice (from KBB website's invoice price)

You can tell where a 2007 Camry "was manufactured" - other than looking on the window sticker on the dealer's lot or the B pillar with the driver's door open - by looking at the front bumper. If the front bumper has a square access plug on the right-hand side of the bumper's face, it was manufactured in Japan. Those manufactured at the Georgetown, KY plant do not have this square plug.

I may be wrong, but I think the plug may cover a tie-down point for the cargo ship transit and shipment from Japan.
  • njeraldnjerald Member Posts: 689
So you would tell the dealer you would pay $22,149 (Factory Invoice + 300) for it? Would Fitzmall even sell it to you for that or do they only go for the Delivered Internet price?

Right. When I bought mine their internet price was $300 over their invoice price.

I don't know if they would sell for less or not. I know I wouldn't pay more than +$300 if that at this time.
  • njeraldnjerald Member Posts: 689
Add or subtract the invoice price of the options you want. You can get those invoice prices from Edmunds or KBB.

I you are in the SE you are screwed with their charges and unavoidable option crap.

My new 2007 Camry has 4 Bridgestone Turanza EL400 02 P215/60R16 tires who's sidewall (very hard to read) says Max Load 1477 lbs at Max 51 psi.

The Camry door jam sticker says tire pressure of 30 psi for all tires!

Toyota web site says go with their sticker of 30 psi which is what the tire had (30psi). Well 51psi is only 70% higher tire inflation.

Tire booklet clearly states that "underinflation can create an overlaod on tire"!

So are my current tires underinflated at 30psi?
  • njeraldnjerald Member Posts: 689
I use 35 psi cold pressure in mine.

Rides good, handles better and better gas mileage.

The tire sidewall is just for max loading.

The questions being raised are concerning the Automatic transmissions. If you've ordered a Manual tranny you should be worry free.
  • mbolivermboliver Member Posts: 55
Thanks for the advice! I appreciate it!
  • mbolivermboliver Member Posts: 55
Thank goodness! I wasn't sure if it was all their transmissions in this car or just the autos. Thanks for responding. :)

    hey everybody
i'm in the market for a camry and i want to ask you guys a question
it is possible to get an se 4 cyl manual with navi and leather?are there any problems with the 4 cyl manual?
    thank you
  • joecarnutjoecarnut Member Posts: 215
Go with 30 PSI. Make that cold pressure.
  • lmacmillmacmil Member Posts: 1,758
51 psi is the max the tire can handle. 30 psi is what Toyota recommends for the best ride and handling. About 25 psi or less would be underinflated. Go with 30 or a little more. Remember that pressure changes 1 psi for every 10 deg (F) change so during fall and winter, you may have to add air every month.
  • mbolivermboliver Member Posts: 55
My brochure says you can't get the SE in a manual with leather. But you can get the navi. I can't imagine that you couldn't get the leather added though. Have you asked a dealer? As far as I know there are no problems with the manual. I just ordered an LE manual myself. :D
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
As I understand it, all Camrys with manual transmissions are built in Japan. This has been the case for the last few years. (Only a very small percentage Camrys have manual transmissions - something like 1%.)

I've also heard from our local dealer (in Toyota's Central Atlantic region) that the region is discouraging dealers from installing (or farming out the installation) of leather in models not factory-equipped with it. The reason is that the leather could affect the proper deployment of the seat-mounted side airbags.

Identifying a Japanese made car is easier than that --- If the pre-fix in the VIN # starts with a "j" it's from Japan -- plain and simple....
  • waynethepainwaynethepain Member Posts: 31
I asked my local dealer when I bought my Camry out here in CA back in March. He told me at least on the west coast -- about 1/2 of their inventory was Japanese made (with a "J" prefix in the VIN #) and the other half locally made (Long Beach CA). Hope that helps -- love my Japanese made XLE V6!

so is it possible to have the dealer install the leather package in a camry with manual trans?
  • jbolltjbollt Member Posts: 736
I don't believe that Toyota has a manufacturing plant in Long Beach,CA. Kentucy is where they are currently building Camrys, I do believe.

Of course, there is a port in Long Beach, so perhaps the dealer was refering to where the japenese built cars arrive for your region of the country. Or perhaps he was refereing to where some of the acessories are installed. ie: body side moldings

Adding aftermarket leather is certainly an option. The dealer arranged for this on my Hybrid. In my case the dealer did not actually do the work, it was done by a shop called Cole Brothers in Nashville.

They did a great job, and I actually went to their shop to see what and how they did it. I came away realizing that this is a VERY simple job. They order complete kits from a company called katzkin and every piece is already cut, stitched, and sized to look just like the factory including the leather on the doors.

I have no idea some paranoid lawyer is telling Toyota not to recommend this, but we are getting way to crazy and fearful in this country about lawsuits.

Someone else posted that the dealer charged them $995, but I did not negotiate as well so I got charged $1295 which was the cost on the sticker if the car came w/ leather from the factory.

Not true. I saw a CE with a stick. The manual transmission was built in Japan, and then put into the car in Kentucky.
  • cgmax2kcgmax2k Member Posts: 27
I have an SE with the manual and it was built in Kentucky, well atleast assembled in Kentucky. Now if the transmission was actually built in Japan and then installed in Kentucky, that's another story. From what I was led to believe when I was first looking for the manual SE, the manuals, I was told, were only being built in Japan until they got up to speed in the US but my car was in fact assembled in the US. As far as leather goes, for some stupid reason, it is not available as a factory option on manual transmissions. If you look in the brochure in the options you will see a footnote where it says not available on manual transmissions. Now, what a transmission and leather seats have to do with one another is beyond me and to be honest beyond reason. Usually you see mfrs.link one option into another, which is one way they get you to spend more money if there is something you really want but if the dealer had it installed for you with no objections from Toyota or Toyota not voiding any kind of warranty, then I don't see what the problem would be. If they can certify that the leather is OK for side airbags, then I say enjoy!! My preference is not for leather but I must admit that it certainly looks really nice!! Good luck and enjoy!!
  • kdhspyderkdhspyder Member Posts: 7,160
Leather can be put in any vehicle even one 10 yrs old.

However depending on your region Toyota and/or the dealer may refuse to do so because it may interfere with the operation of the side airbags. In CAT Toyota has instructed the dealers NOT to install aftermarket leather on any vehicle with SAB. This is relatively recent within 90 days.
  • ray_h1ray_h1 Member Posts: 1,134
about installing leather. Each said no problem, they each do it on premises, and to allow a day and a half. Is there some miscommunication in some regions? This side air bag issue also begs the question of how Toyota deals with a defective front seatback leather cover that requires replacement under warranty. I find it unrealistic to accept the absurdity that perhaps the seat would then have to be shipped back to the factory to assure proper installation.
  • kdhspyderkdhspyder Member Posts: 7,160
Interesting info about SoCal region. I know in SET and GST adding leather is done very often still. In CAT it's come to a halt due to the memo received.

    Is ur se a 4cyl or 6cyl and is it a 5speed can u get a 6cyl with a 5 or 6 speed
  • 210delray210delray Member Posts: 4,721
For 2007 (and 2005-06), 4 cylinder comes with 5-speed manual or 5-speed auto. (XLE is auto only.)

The 2007 V6 comes only with 6-speed auto.
  • damon34damon34 Member Posts: 124
I was wondering if anybody in here has a SE 6cyl. and how do they like it. I have the se 4cyl but was thinking about upgrading would it be worth the money?
  • cgmax2kcgmax2k Member Posts: 27
unfortunately the 4 cyl in the only one available with the manual. Based on the problems with the auto V6 I would probably wait until next year before I would even consider it to make sure they get the bugs out. I'm happy with the 4 cyl but it obviously doesn't have the power of the V6 but you are also saving $2500 or so, actually more since you car is "used", based on the cost difference and a bunch of gas.
  • mbolivermboliver Member Posts: 55
Thanks! I will check mine out when it arrives. It's taking so long to make I think it may be coming from Japan. They are telling me 3 months. I hope to have it by Thanksgiving! :)
  • waynethepainwaynethepain Member Posts: 31
Yeah -- you know what -- you're right -- doesn't matter for me though -- bought a Japanese built and love it. Thanks for pointing this out! Wayne

I have a V6 SE. I was debating between the V4 & V6 when I was shopping for the SE. I ended buying the V6 because while it costs about 2.5k more, it offers a lot more (100 more horses, sport shift transmission and the dual mufflers). I have about 3k miles on my car and I have to say, I have been very happy with it. It has plenty power and surprisingly really good on gas. I average about 25 mpg with about 25% city and 75% hwy miles. I believe Consumer Reports show the V6 getting 1 mpg less than the V4 on average.

"I was debating between the V4 & V6 when I was shopping for the SE."

A trivial point, but lest some newb get confused and come across as an idiot while shopping for a new Camry*, there are no automibiles with "V4" engines currently sold in North America. (I think Saab at one time had an available V4, though...) Toyota's four cylinder engines in the U.S. are of inline configuration - ie, an "I4".

*Sales people love when that happens - they get all smug & smirky inside knowing they're ahead of the curve during negotiations...
  • poorcruzerpoorcruzer Member Posts: 141
Trivial! There is nothing trivial about a V-4 engine. My Honda V-65 Sabre 1100cc, 121 hp is a V-4 engine. :shades:

I am looking for pointers to a keyless entry for an 07 Camry CE. Does Toyota make a kit? Has anyone added an aftermarket keyless entry? I am interested in details such as manufacturer, approx. price, how hard it was to install, overall satisfaction. I scanned the forum but didn't see any details. Thanks!
  • jjthenovicejjthenovice Member Posts: 5
I would add an alarm (Viper is my preference). This will give you the keyless entry plus added security.

Two questions about our SE v-6 with the JBL upgraded stereo:

1.We just had XM installed by the dealer using the Toyota XM receiver. I was surprised to find the sound quality to be poorer than the local fm stations and cd changer. One reason we went with Toyota for the XM install is we thought the sound would be better than after market add ons which use FM modulators. But the sound is flat, almost like it is mono.

    2. Another issue about the radio, is that the ASL function doesn't work. As the vehicle increases to highway speed, the radio volume stays the same with the ASL on. I tried to see if the ASL could be adjusted, like other manufacturers allow, but could only see and on/off feature. The dealer said there's nothing wrong with it, the tech told my wife "it will only increase in volume if there is a loud noise, like passing a loud truck". I didn't believe this for a second, and am wondering if I am missing something, like a way to adjust the sensitivity of the ASL, or maybe the stereo is defective.

Any input on these issues would be appreciated.
