Only 304 mls in 10 days??? I think you need to go out driving some more. Mine is 24 days old and i have almost 1300 mls on it. Woah i have alot of mls on my truck amazing doesnt seem like i have driven it that much. Hmmm wonder if when im at work my dad goes driving in it. I need to get lojack. Hows your gas milage on the new one Mike better, worse, or the same compared to the 4.8 1500???
ryan, finishing the job seems to be a problem nowadays. my neighbor had to get the trunk of her new mustang painted recently. not only did they not get the adhesive from the masking tape off the paint around the wheel wells...they didn't do a good job painting the car and then...get this. they DID wash the whole car (it's black by the way) only, they dried it with freaking paper towels. so, now she has a million miniscule scratches in her clearcoat. duh!!! and these guys are a body shop!!! that's why you use a chamoix to dry your vehicle. towels, be they paper or cloth will put small scratches in your paint. the chamoix will not. needless to say, she showed the manager, and is getting it redone for free. it's just a shame that in the first month of ownership, the dealer had the car more than she did, by a count of about 3 weeks to 1.
Now I'm getting depressed. What do I take, Xanax or geritol?
Obyone, Not saying I'm right or wrong on this, but my experience with K&N filters is that they don't filter as well as paper. After getting grime in my intake a few years back, I'm sticking with paper. A few layers of cotton gauze, if you don't oil it enough, dirt goes right through. If you over-oil it, oil gets sucked in. In my case, the grime looked to have oil and dirt. Another problem I found on a different filter was poor sealing at the gasket. Tiny holes to you and me, but looked like the Grand Canyon to specks of dirt. Better luck for you I hope, but I'm not taking any more risks. Paper flows good when new.
Sorry i didnt mean it like that its just a thing i have noticed in my area older people (40-60) seem to all have a dark carmine color truck. Its just a trend i have noticed. Its a nice color though hey the color is one of the most important things about the truck. My next one will be um............. haha i have no clue yet. Im working on a tahoe next though.
I'm (im)patiently waiting on the 2001 Silverado's to come out. I probably spend more time daydreaming about a Carmine Red with Neutral Silverado 1500 Ext Cab 4X4 LT than I do thinking about sex right now!
By the way, a guy mentioned a photo site (had Wieck in the name) late last week on this site. I went looking around on it and found some photos of a 2001 GMC Sierra C-Series. Had some nifty additional interior features, CD changer; stereo controls on steering wheel, etc. I've asked my salesman to look into this C-series to find out if some of these interior features will be available on the Silverado's for 2001.
Forget who asked about my tow vehicle, but it's a 4.8L 5-speed 4.10 - great power.
New show on TNN by Dave and Sam. Doing a special on installing "active suspension on the new Silverado" next weekend. New show is called Chrome and Crank or something like that. Wonder if Shadetree Mechanic is gone, now?
Obeyone - yup, balance weights on the driveshaft.
Bed's - Real trucks use a rubber bed mat (Penda) and diamondplate front and rear bed covers (BetterBuilt).
2001 Crew Cab - 6.0L HP is still TBA. My order did not get allocated from my dinky dealer last week. Hope for this week.
Mldje - Do you use 1st gear for starts when unloaded or skip and start in 2nd on your new truck?
Colors - I love my white truck with Peanut Butter Oak interior.
Ryanbab - Still LOL about your "Car"mine red color being for old codgers.
Be observant. How many young (20's - 30's) people do u see driving carmine red trucks??? All i ever see the majority of "us" driving is black blue and silver trucks. Another nice combo is with the pewter on the bottom with peter flares i see a many of gmcs like this. Still have only seen one blue with black fender flares besides mine. But its a gmc and not a chevy so im still the only guy on the block with a truck like mine luckily.
The meadow green isnt a bad color not many out there maybe thats why its gone for 2001.
In the steering wheel to me is kinda pointless. My dads 2000 blazer has em and i have never used them when i have driven it. The sterring wheel is kinda of uncomfortable with the controls there. If they do put them on the silverado i would recomend you test drive it with and without them i have heard many people say they do not like the controls in the steering wheel its not an option for everyone.
Yeah 304 miles in 10 days. I've been too busy to drive the truck. I've got to finish my fence and transfer all the camper mounts and stuff from the old truck to the new truck before vacation starts late next week. All that stuff is done, so now I can get the 500 miles in and change the oil and go on vacation. Next monthe at this time I'll have 6000 miles on the truck.
I haven't filled it up yet so I don't know about he mileage. I'm getting about 100 miles/quarter tank, so I'm hoping for 15-16mpg empty, around town. But I don't know. I'll let you know next week.
Markbuck,
So far I start out in first. I suspect I always will. 2nd is just a little too high for my taste. I don't have to give it any throttle, just ease out the clutch and drive away. By the weekend I'll have the camper on and see how that goes.
Change the oil already??? U have 300 mls on it. Im doing mine when i get 3000 on it. i think you guys are to worked up on changing the oil to soon. 500 mls on it uh oh all the oil is gone. Im not trying to tell you what to do do what you want im just saying to me it makes no sense.
Dont screw up your bumper. If you do itll cost you. A guy came into work this weekend and we got to a talking he had a new truck (silverado) and i asked him how it was he said everything was good except that he backed into a 4x4 post and it bent his bumper and cracked the plastic, also scratched paint behind the bumper. He was gonna replace it until he found out it was going to be $900 some dollars for the bumper alone. Also he had a problem with his cloth bucket seats. Something broke on them he didnt know offhand he wasnt a big guy like you would think he sat down and it broke.
My buddy loves his Radio controls in the steering wheel of his GTP....but I could care less for them.. ..Skip a K/N...stay with stock filters that actually filter dirt.
and #207...hey young buck...as for that what you think about trucks and sex......from now on we are on a need to know basis....and we didn't need to know that! LOL
- Tim
BTW..as mentioned...if I don't like the new Orange...I will have an LT custom painted Carmine/Gold if I have to..
You may be right, but in my family we always change the oil at 500 miles. My dad has been a mechanic forever, and we change the oil early to get any contamination (that might have been in the engine) out. Any casting sand, machinging chips, etc. With modern production methods, it is probably not needed, but I will continue to do it.
It is only once in the life of the vehicle and it only costs $10.
After the initial change, I will follow the oil minder light on the truck. Mobil 1 after 5000 miles. AC filters only. Mobil synthetic grease also.
Mike L
PS: ryan, glad your truck came out looking OK. A little cleanup is not a big deal, but lousy body/paint work is.
yea your right about the clean up it was a pain and then it rained today. So its like i wasted my time but oh well. My dad has been a mechanice for 27 yrs working on heavy machinery, bulldozer, forklifts, cranes and such we didnt change our 2000 blazers oil till it had 3200 mls on it. Has about 7000 and no problems. I guess we cant be changed in what we have done for years. Im not driving mine hard yet i stress yet ill wait till about 2500 mls then ill go full force start towing maybe and stuff. I need to make mucho dinero this summer i wanna buy a boat next yr.
HEY anyone know how much and whats the website for the zaino wax? A few more wks and im gonna take a day off and wax my truck.
not being a wise guy, but do you know where the oil dipstick is located in the engine compartment? You have 1300 miles and you're going to wait to 3000 to do your first oil change? How long do you plan to keep this truck? I guess it doesn't bother you that all those tiny metal shavings are running around inside of your engine. Maybe the oil can last 3000 miles, but the oil filter won't be removing those metal shavings, in fact, it could be in bypass mode by the time you read this. For zaino checkout www.zainobros.com
Quad I agree with the stock replacement. I would not consider replacing stock filter with a K&N. The only reason that I have one is that it came with the Airaid setup. I also have reservations about over oiling/under oiling filter and have not cleaned mine as of yet to avoid the reoiling.
If you plan to "keep this forever"...as you have stated...you are nuts to leave the original oil in for 3000 miles. Have you ever spent any long nights under a hood in high school?...or just on the court?
Change it now as people have said. We are your friends..most with much more automotive history than you...but if you don't want to take any advice....hey..A.M.T.!
...as for the 01 thing....I got a better Idea....YOU do it.
Yes i know where the dipstick is im not a dumbass. I have checked it each time i have filled up my truck and its still not low.
Thanks for the Zaino site.
Tim: Nah the 01 only goes with the orange my truck is blue itll look funny. No i didnt spend countless hours under a hood i was on a basketball court playing pretty much 7 days a wk.
>I guess it doesn't bother you that all those tiny metal shavings are running around inside of your engine<
As someone who keeps cars and trucks far longer than average, I'd say that is essentially bull. Sure it won't hurt anything if you change it at 500 miles, but in the last 25 years my family has mot changed oil before 3000 miles (escept on a local rebuild) and no engine has had problems. Typical mileage at sale or trade? 185,000 miles.
Modern engines don't have much junk in them from the factory. If they did, they'd tell you to change it sooner. If an oil filter filled up with crap so much that it went into bypass mode, that's a LOT of crap, and the engine would have fried by then anyway.
(Fram filters excepted. They go into bypass mode when new ...)
>Modern engines don't have much junk in them from the factory. If they did, they'd tell you to change it sooner. If an oil filter filled up with crap so much that it went into bypass mode, that's a LOT of crap, and the engine would have fried by then anyway.
(Fram filters excepted. They go into bypass mode when new ...)<
The deduction from this would be that anyone using a Fram would have a fried engine since it goes into bypass mode when new? And it doesn't take a lot of crap to cause the filter to go into bypass mode...just lousy filter element. Even the expensive, recommended filters are probably in bypass by 3000 miles...Fram just does it in 300. Now imagine the small metal shavings and the broken down cellulose filter element plus the glue all floating around in your engine...My $.03
Of you are paranoid. Little things floating around your engine like little green men maybe at this very moment they are disassebling your engine better go change the oil. Do you know for a fact that it is happening??? How do you know its harming your truck??? Im sure there is some stuff floating around in there but u guys make it out to be a river of metal.
I.M.T. = Its my Truck
D.W.A.M.T = Don't Worry About Me Tim
Im sure everything will be just fine. Ill compromise at 2000 mls ill probably change mine alright???
No it wont hurt the truck at all but these guys think if you dont do it it will hurt it there is no proof of this i guess its a do whatcha want kinda thing.
I just talked to my saleman and he said he is ordering my 2001 Silverado today. He said he should have a TPW in about three weeks. Does this sound right? I thought I could get a TPW in less time than that. Any thoughts appreciated.
Take it from an "old carmine driver", I changed my oil at 1500 miles. Yes, even though I am an oldtimer, I can still crawl under the truck, running boards and all. If you saw all the gunk on the magnetic drain plug you would drain your oil NOW! I expected it to have some crud but was amazed at how much was there. Question to all. When you change your oil before the oil change reminder comes on, do you still reset the meter so it starts a fresh oil change monitoring cycle? Thanks
I think I reset mine. Something about pushing the pedal 5 times in 5 seconds with ignition on "on" position??? I think I did, truck never acknowledged...but never say that change oil light yet and have 11K miles.
Thats the same thing that I did. I would feel better if the system would acknowledge that it was reset. Then if the light came on I would take it seriously rather than wondering if it was still counting from the first oil fill.
I placed my order on a saturday march 11th to be exact Tues the 14th they put it in the computer and it was accepted. March 21st i got a TPW of april 10th truck was actually built april 6th and arrived at the dealership on april 10th.
Kinda wierd but thats how it went they told me it wouldnt be more than 2 wks for a TPW but wiht you ordering a 2001 it might be longer so hes probably just saying 3 wks to save his butt just thunk if he told you a wk wouldnt you be upset if u didnt get one then??
I believe this whole oil change subject is directly related to the sphincter muscle twitching......
Ryan, you & I of of the minority with the oil change @ 3000 miles, but that's what I have always done & no problems, BUT it is a personal choice of the individual owner because I.T.T. (it's their truck) filters only filter 10% of the oil at a time so there is always something floating around in there.
Steve, As for the idiot light , I changed my oil @3000 miles & GM's invention had not yet activated, I did not reset what wasn't there so I will wait & see when the idiot light comes on. Now had I chose to wait till GM told me when to change the oil (by way of this light) I'd still be waiting for the MANUFACTORER'S suggested oil change interval, but my personal choice is @3000 mile intervals because I.M.T. (it's my truck)
If you've never seen the metal flying inside the CNC booth while a block is being machined, you probably can't appreciate how easy it is for there to be lots of chips inside a new engine. The good news is they don't cause many problems down in the oil pan. But if they grind around your camshaft, or get pumped into the main bearing journals, you could have knocking, slapping later on. There used to be a recommendation in the owners manual on older cars to change oil after 500 miles. While you possibly don't need to do this on new vehicles, why take the chance for $12? Just my $0.02
Ive been under my truck . Pretty easy considering its a 4x4 i had to check out the underneath after a truck blew a tire and i hit it. Everything was fine skid plate just has a black mark now from the tire. They are very strong i had no idea till i heard the thud of the tire hit and then i went under and hit the thing wow its solid.
i must admit i'm with ryan and ray in their minority. i changed at 3430. some, but not a whole lot of gunk on the drain plug, and the oil itself didn't look too bad. as for reseting the idiot light...i did the reset thingy at about 3500 (after-thought). it did acknowledge with the blinking message...though i forget what it was. wife's on her way home from pa right now. should have 'bout 7300 or so on it when she gets back...so this weekend i'll hit it for the second time. incidentally have NOT seen any change oil light yet. so...i think when you reset it, regardless of whether it tells you to change your oil or not...it resets it. while i have it up, i'm also going to take some pics under the front axle to show you guys where i've been lubing and see if we have any additional input from anyone. ryan, send me the url for that aol photo book thing if you will. hopefully i'll have something for ya'll to check out next week.
When i get home tonight some time alright probably between 3:30 and 4:30 im at work right now and i dont have aol here. Thanks for the excel and powerpoint things i am printing out the powerpoint here at work by how do you check the tire pressure and windshield washer fluid all you put was duh hahaha (i know how to do this i just thought id be a smart #&^#&*^)
I am unable to view your pic's posted thru AOL, that is access that our Abany based server rejects so unless you send them over to www.picturetrail.com I'll just think of what it looks like......don't you just love when a truck throws a recap out from under it, sorta like a slalom race at 70 mph in a 4500 lb. sled.......whahoo.
Ill send you some im gonna buy a digital camera soon and ill have pics with all the accessories this truck is butt naked but you can get the idea.
Yea that tire thing sucked i closed my eyes and drove. My mom was in the back sleeping and it woke her up it hit so loud. That ext cab must be comfy everyone wants to ride back there. DOgg loves it back there but hes banned to much dogg hair to clean up.
on mine (this weekend). Probably will stick to 5K changes as oil and engines today are far better that yesterday. Change it 3K or every 500 miles if it makes you feel better, but there comes a point where it's a waste...
Ryan....we have got you from 3000 down to 2000 miles.. so... I.M.B.O.T.!! (it must be our truck)
...had no idea that would catch on so good?
New engines are tighter than before..but I still feel there are shavings...as well as the residual gunk from when the engines are put together. See Ryan my man...all the parts are "greased" up in a lube like substance...so when the engine first starts up...it's not bone dry throughout. Whenever we stuck a cam in or any time we used the goop...we changed the oil after that.
...Course you don't learn this on the court..
Get angry if you must..but hey..we are just trying to help you out...with our knowledge and opinions. You give yours...why can't we give ours?
again...A.M.T.!
- Tim
BTW Ryan...to check the tire pressure....you unscrew the cap on the valve stem...now see the little center stem?....unscrew that small piece until it is all the way out....you will hear the air flowing....it will now "adjust" itself just fine. Let me know how it goes.
I'm really pissed at the "Ultimate Driving Machines" They and all the articles can brag about the great resale but on my 14 months car with 8000 miles I'm loosing 30%+ D*!#. Went to 6 dealers in town and surrounding area all within a $1000. Saturday going to see if can sell and pocket money till new Chevy arrives. In my looking have found similar 1999 Silverados LS Rg cab with prices same as what I paid for my 2000 LS. In fact one was higher and had fewer options. Going to east coast in a few weeks so I'll just take my truck!!!. Doubt any interested but it just P.O.'s.
On oil I just had a freebie service but before took in checked was right on the mark and looked just as clean as when new, filter must had still been doing a good job. Mileage was just over 3000. Only problen had was tires which is really Goodyears.
German engineering is great and handling superb, but geeze, I even test drove a 540 series for trade est and the BMW dealer was the lowest offer, its their product even!!!! Oh well vented now!!!
Is there anyway to check to ,see if a dealer has actually placed the order for a new 2001 silverado. I know I should get a TPW but that will take awhile.
This salesman has sort of given me the run around and I would just feel better knowing the order is actually in Chevrolet's possession. He said he was going to order it today... but why am I not confident it has been done?

BTW Ryan...to check the tire pressure....you unscrew the cap on the valve stem...now see the little center stem?....unscrew that small piece until it is all the way out....you will hear the air flowing....it will now "adjust" itself just fine.
Let me know how it goes.
the "Ultimate Driving Machines" They and
all the articles can brag about the great
resale but on my 14 months car with 8000
miles I'm loosing 30%+ D*!#. Went to 6 dealers
in town and surrounding area all within a $1000. Saturday going to see if can sell and pocket money
till new Chevy arrives. In my looking have
found similar 1999 Silverados LS Rg cab with
prices same as what I paid for my
2000 LS. In fact one was higher and had fewer options. Going to east coast in a few weeks
so I'll just take my truck!!!. Doubt any
interested but it just P.O.'s.
On oil I just had a freebie service but before
took in checked was right on the mark and
looked just as clean as when new, filter
must had still been doing a good job. Mileage
was just over 3000. Only problen had was
tires which is really Goodyears.
German engineering is great and handling
superb, but geeze, I even test drove a 540
series for trade est and the BMW dealer was
the lowest offer, its their product even!!!!
Oh well vented now!!!

This salesman has sort of given me the run around and I would just feel better knowing the order is actually in Chevrolet's possession. He said he was going to order it today... but why am I not confident it has been done?
Thanks.
