wife got back from the heart land last night. got 7700 miles on it now. ready for oil change number two. will use q-state and ac delco pf-59 again this time and next one change to synthetic. over the first 7700 miles, average gas mileage was 15.52 mpg, avg speed was about 37 mph. it rained the whole time she was up there, so it looks like a hog pen. wash and zaino this weekend. spray in next month, will be a line-x over the rail. haven't found anyone to talk me out of it yet. 'cept you tim, who i know prefers drop-ins. other than that, no one has come up with a good reason NOT to get a line-x, and NOT to get over the rail.
I seen an over the rail line-x this past weekend at work and it looked real nice dont let anyone talk you out of it. It looked like the truck had bedrail caps couldnt even tell it was a spray in.
Oh that dodge 5.9 (dakota) aint crap. I left one sitting at a stop light this morning.
I do have a noise coming from it sounds like my steering wheel. It comes and goes wierd kinda like a buzzing static noise. Any ideas on what could be the problem???
There is a big difference between wholesale and retail used car prices.
Check the Kelley Blue Book at KBB.com.
My 99 Silverado was $16,000 wholesale (3 dealers all the same as kbb.com) while the retail was $21,500. I'll either keep it or try to sell it on my own.

What is the purpose of "over the rail" line-x???? Are you placing things on the bed rail & don't want them to slide, do you have a wide load sign attached to front end for the load hanging over the rail??? Once the line-x is on the rail you'll never get it off so now it won't match the exquisite GM paint job..........have I discouraged you yet, just get a rubber bed mat & "don't worry about the bed" IT'S A TRUCK, a clean bed does not resell the truck for you...... there I feel better already LOL
You make your bed up in the morning (ok well your wife does it)think of it that way. You dont want your bed messy (scratches, dirt) thats why we get the spray in for appearance looks mostly (for me at least) and the usefulness secondly.
Bed mats suck when you wanna put a pallet of bricks, concrete, or shingles on someones truck it just gets pushed up to the front. The drop ins are the best for loading pallets with a forklift spray ins kinda make the pallet stick and seems to wanna grab and stay where u drop them.
Only on the 1/2 ton 2001 extended cab short bed, per the documentation I have.
Driving slow/fast - I usually only get 16mpg running 80. This last tank, I went on a backroads adventure, with a couple of hundred elk that kept wanting to run out in front of me and I currently have 550 miles on the last tank, average speed was more like 60 with lots of panic slowdowns. Suspect will get more like 17 to 18 mpg at these slower speeds. (4,8L 4.10LS, 5speed 4wd)
Just read a great way to check for proper inflation when running light. Draw a chalk line across your tread, run down the road, check to insure the chalk is uniformly worn off. If gone in the middle, remove air, if gone on edges, add air.
Pretty good idea, kinda the KISS principle. Was in one of this months 4wd rags.....
While working as a service writer in college for a Sears Automotive Center, a woman brought in their Pontiac Lemans for a front wheel alignment at the request of her husband. After telling her it would be $19.99, she said "Is that all? Do the back ones then too while you're at it." Also had a few (women) get sent to us to check their 'muffler belt'...
hey, anyone know where i can get some "horn fluid"? i heard it's supposed to make your horn "a lot louder".
well, anyways, thanks for the advice ray, but i do want to protect my bed - half the paints already gone from sliding stuff in and out. as for why i want over the rail, no i don't plan on sitting stuff on top of the rail (until i get a cap), but i do frequently slide stuff over the rail. by the way, your advice is kinda interesting too. something along the lines of: don't get the over the rail, it'll never match the exquisite paint. and then turn around and say...don't worry about the bed, IT'S A TRUCK. well...kinda contradictory there. but i know what you're trying to say though. the only reason i wouldn't get an over the rail is if someone tells me between now and next month that OTRs are not compatible with caps - and has a legit reason why not.
ryan - haven't tried the photo site yet. i just changed the oil, i'm going back out to take some pics, i'll be back later to see if i can get them posted. thanks...
If you get an OTR liner that DOES NOT match the GM paint and then you add a cap that DOES match the truck's paint, the OTR will stick outside of the cap. THEN, you will have a very unique, or worse, UGLY looking truck. Is this sufficient reason??
Also, if the truck bed ever needs body work and re-painting after a wreck, then it is more likely that an OTR will need both re-painting and re-spraying than a UTR will.
On my last GMC I had a cap on the bed and then took it off and actually sold it. On the rails where the cap was, all of the paint was rubbed off and they were starting to rust. For this very reason is why I got the Line-X over the rail done. If I ever put a cap on my new truck, I do not want the rails to rust. Also for loading and unloading over the side, the over the rail adds more protection just in case.
Why so shocked its 6000 under wholesale. So today just went to Chevy dealer that have car ordered from and will turn in tomorrow they will apply as credit when pick new one up in Bowling green KT in August. They will get to use my money for 3 months but I save a lot on taxes (luxury tax). The model have (had) just hasn't caught on in the states, most guides don't even quote a price.
Why not wait until the bed is all screwed up and THEN spray in the liner? Having nothing protects the bed as well as the sparay-in cosmetic-only liner anyway.
I'd like to see the scratches that load of bricks leaves ...
Go to your salesman and ask him for a copy of the order to gm. If he gives you excuses, go to the sales manager and tell him that you want written verification of the order for your truck. If the dealership is up front with you, then you will have a copy before you walk out the door. Bob
My 2000 3/4 ton Silverado is constantly flipping stones onto the rocker panels of the doors and the painted metal that faces the road on the underside of the truck. I can't find mudflaps and since I plow snow I am not sure that mudflaps would stay on the truck. I am not interested in running boards either. So here are my questions. Has anybody tried line-x spray on the body below the trim on both sides of the truck to prevent stone chips? My truck is pewter, how would it look if I had it sprayed navy blue up to the trim piece? There are lots of two tones out there, would this look any different? Would this void the rust through warranty?
I welcome the comments on this subject even thought some of you may be tired of it. I too, am considering a spray-in liner and have decisions to make about the brand and over or under the rail. I do not know this for a fact, but I have heard that Line X is harder and thiner than Rhino. The Rhino is softer and is easier to gouge. Sounds like Line X for me, but have not made my final decision. Still must decide on over or under the rail. Appreciate the comment on the appearance of over the rail with a topper on the truck as I may also get a topper the same color as my pewter LS and I had not thought of the possibility of over the rail showing under the shell. I do like the idea of over the rail preventing rust due to movement of the topper. Bob
If you think the resale is bad on your Chevy, think about how the Tundra owners feel. They bought thinking their Tundra would have great resale value simply because it is a Toyota and supposedly to them, it is more reliable and great.
My Silverado with 22k miles on it has 2k more value than a comparibly equipped Tundra with average miles (15k). My Silverado is a 99. The Tundra is a 2000 model.
I have had a few irritating issues to deal with on my Silverado, but overall, in comparible miles driven, it is still the best truck I have ever owned, including the few imports I have had.
Not knocking any make here. All this is just to say that your truck isn't getting hit any more than any other make truck and probably, knowing GM usually has a higher resale value, it is most likely getting less of a hit than other makes.
The only other truck I would consider, as far as 1/2 ton trucks, is a Ford. They build a quality truck as well. Decision between the two would be purely cosmetic in my eyes.
I am hearing a clacking noise coming from my new 5.3 v8 after 600mi. I took the truck to the dealer and one of the service tech told me that the is a problem with piston slap in the 5.3V8. Gm told them to change the oil to 10w30 and to drive the truck for another 1000mi and see if the noise goes away. Has anyone else experienced and thing similar with their truck?
Go to huskylinings.com or huskyliners.com i forget the correct link one will work and they have a set of very nice and easy to install mudflaps that go with the factory flares i havent had anything like mud or dirt thrown up on the sides of my truck it stops everything. I paid like $26.95 a set not bad. Ill have some pics possibly in the next few wks but dont hold me to that.
kanton, If the cap rubbed the paint off of the truck rails, then it was not installed properly in the first place. Second, when it comes time to sell the truck or remove the cap permanently, then add plastic or aluminum rail protectors to cover any damage. Third, if body work is needed, it is easier to replace rail protectors than to re-spray the liner. Fourth, liner damage on the rail, is more of an eye-sore than in the bed, whereas add-on liners can be replaced if needed. Fifth, aluminum rail protectors provide better protection than the liner.
On the last point, I recently saw a RV'er who didn't get the 5th wheel hitch latched and he had the trailer drop onto the bed rails. With a hitch weight of about 1000 lbs, this did no damage to his aluminum rail protectors or the bed rails even though the un-protected tail gate was rendered un-usable. He avoided an expensive trip to the body shop, just had to get a new tailgate at the junk yard. An over the rail liner doesn't provide the same protection.
my bed is already scratched. i've had it since january and that's exactly why i waited. it's now sufficiently scratched to get a spray in. kyle, i like the way your over the rail looks almost exactly like rail caps. i think that's what i'll request. it appears as though if you got a cap the liner would protect the rails, but NOT stick out from under the cap.
i gotta go to a meeting right now, but i took the lube point pictures last night and will post them on picturetrail sometime today. tried messing with the aol site ryan...didn't work out. i'll let you all know when i get it figured out.
wanted to say thanks for your input too. i appreciate it greatly. i'll still be getting an OTR, but...you made some great points. i just don't think that they'll apply to me. for one...i don't nor will i likely ever have a fifth wheel. thanks to everyone for your input...
Are you trying to get under my skin about the pacers cause im from indiana??? Actaully indianapolis is about 2 and a half hrs away around here we are (were i mean) bulls fans cause its like 35 min away and we get the chicago news. I actaully cant stand the pacers i hope the knicks beat em. Im hoping for portland to win the championship myself but since jordan has left i rarely watch bball. I think im more of a baseball fan now but they way the cubs are playing makes you not wanna be.
From me get bedrail caps and dont do over the rail. If you ever need body work even a little scratch on the side the whole side needs to be painted and they will have to take it off. They had to take off my bedrail caps and it was simpler to retape down than spray a new liner in. Im glad i didnt get over the rail i really like my black plastic rail caps look great and work great too.
all - to those of you who do your own services, please check out this website and tell me if you've found any more lube points under the front end. to those of you who don't, but want to...this should get you started on where to look. as i get more info or find more, i'll update this site. post responses here and/or let me know what you think at kwerking@aol.com
Nice pics very helpful. What kinda camera (digital?) and how much did it cost i am looking at buying one soon. Thanks oh yea i seen one at circuit city $60 i think it would serve my purpose.
They work great and look very nice. I kinda lied though in the rear very bottom under the Z71 sticker there is dirt so it did throw some dirt up im still trying to figure out where it came from. My nerf bars havent been nicked or scratched yet i think the mudflaps have helped to prevent this. Give the site a try if you are looking for a very nice looking and functional mud flap they even have special made ones for the gm factory fender flare.
Hey Tim you and merideth are pretty close huh? You got that toyota post canned after like a day. That one was getting good too. How can he say gm is junk? Ford does outsell gm but dodge come on i dont understand it. Take a 2000 chevy and a 2000 dodge which one will last yrs longer? Chevy by far. Look at older model trucks do u see many dodges? Rarely. Where are they all at??? I pulled up next to a tundra yesterday i had to laugh at the guy he was staring at my truck actually straining his neck looking up. I can now say its not fullsized being next to one. I have noticed at the plant i work at there are many contractors working here there is 2 count em 2 silverados and probably a few hundred fords. i think alot of fords sales in in contractor sales if you took just regular joe sales and added them up i bet chevy would have the fords beat. Ok now that i started WW3 ill shut up now.
did you have to do any drilling for the mudflaps? or did they mount on existing holes?
incidentally, it was a digital camera. but not mine. borrowed it. i like it a lot, but it's really expensive. gotta pay off my truck and get my wife a new car (possibly a truck now, she likes mine so much) before i can consider something like that.
yes it involved drilling. Used the predrilled fender flare holes for 2 i believe and 1 you had to drill into the flare and truck no biggie just a 1/8" hole. It used clips too. 3 screws maybe 4 im not totally sure 1 you had to drill in the truck the others were predrilled. It really wasnt hard had to take the back wheels off though to drill and screw in screws.
There are two posts gone...one was mine...(which wasn't that bad)....but I missed the other one..
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
I have some real nice SS flaps for the front...match the SS boards real good....I have yet to put them on. It would have stopped slush coming up onto the boards...and splashes on the fenders...but I like the open look better...
We will see if I ever use them?
Maybe I will hold them up and snap a picture....and see what yawl think?
# 282 Engine noise @ startup when cold on 5.3; I had this and dealer fixed per GM remove spark plugs and add GM Top Engine Cleaner let sit over night warm to operating temperature and change oil and filter. Cause is carbon build up. Mine started at 28k and the cure was done at 38k. Solved my problem. Wilson
Got my Lund Intercepter,Weathertech vent visors and tomorrow go in to get the front doors tinted to match the back.00 Z71 1500 LT,1600 miles and no problems.Still getting spray in liner and catback exhaust and thinking about hypertech and possibly a K&N air filter or something equivelent,oh also thinking about the Edelbrock shocks and PIA superwhites and some sterio upgrades, any thoughts or suggestions welcome.
