    driveline growl is similar to engine lugging...as in a manual transmission being in 5th gear when it should be in 3rd. A rather extreme case but I think you'll get the picture. It is caused by torque converter lockup at too low a speed. Causes the engine to strain a wee bit. Fix is supposed to be PCM update from dealer. Works for some not for others.

    Does anyone on this topic know of a place i can purchase wheelflares that are OEM style and are already painted factory colors? I need the pewter color. Do flares that fit the 1999,2000 GM pickups also fit the new 2000 chevy suburban? Anyone have a set they are taking off and want to sell? Thanks in advance Mike

    Burbs/Tahoes and Silverados are different...

    At least I know for sure the Z71 Tahoe Flares are not the same as Silverado...

    I'm still looking for a response to my question about Flowmaster dual exhaust. I had mentioned that the Midas guy talked me into trying their brand with the guarantee that if I didn't like it, I could pay the $30 difference for the Flowmaster. Needless to say, I'll be taking them up on it. I was trying to find out if the Flowmaster was obnoxiously loud between 50-60 mph. I hate the sound.

    Also, I bought the catch-all and fog light auto light thing from truckautoaccessories.com with great results. I was wondering if anybody got the door lock/unlock gadget and what was involved in installation and how well it worked.

    P.S. Like everybody else, I'm sorry about your truck, Ryan. I've got one scratch from a metal builders square falling out of my toolbelt and onto the side of my black and charcoal Z71. It still bugs me.

    They are taking one off of mine tomorrow to fix it when they are done your very welcome to buy it if you want its black and i think only having 1 will make a great statement and probably start a huge new trend. (IM JOKING). I will also have a Z71 sticker, and side molding that will be no use to me as of tomorrow if anyone is interested.

    Can you believe the new small strip of side molding that goes in the rear costs $12.70 and a new Z71 sticker is $8.40. Pretty cheap if u ask me. Damn and that Z71 pkg was $365 it should only be $16.80 if you ask me a huge difference in price. Hopefully they put the right sticker on and not the old one.

    The tahoes rear flares are different due to the door being there the front should be identical

    Thrashers at least urs is just a scratch i wish mine was then i could just use some touchup paint. But this dent bugs the hell out of me.

    It took about 5 minutes more to connect that than it did to install my catch-all floormats! All you do is pull off the front of your dashboard - scared the hell out of me to do that - connect 2 wires with the supplied quick connect adapter things and the ground wire. Then you mount the little controller box with the stickre thing and put everything back together. I stuck mine on the heat/air conditioning vent. You're supposed to disconnect the battery, but I forgot. I don't see the point, anyway. It was pretty easy and everything went back together as it was. Just follow the directions. I'm not mechanically inclined or anything when it comes to cars.

    What's the deal with that $300 computer thing from a little while back to adjust when you get bigger tires or something??? Is that what it's for?

    Does anyone know if there is a way to turn on the fog lights without the headlights being on. That switch you showed me thrasher is an automatic fog light switch it turns on the foglights when the headlights go on i can do that i want something where i can just have the DRL's on with the foglights. I doubt there is anything maybe ill rewire my truck. I had a few electrical engineering courses so far.

    I haven't programmed for 87...running the 92. This truck keeps getting better. Rough idle is gone and so is driveline growl. Powerstat and 92 octane combo for best performance...been running 92 since new...a waste of money until now. After "newness" wears off, I'll try the 87...got to find an area where I can test the speed limiter. That should be fun.

    For those of you who have nerf bars, I have a few questions:
    Which ones do you have?
    How did they mount (to the body mount or frame)?
    If body mount, did the bracket go above or below the block?

    The reason I ask; when I do the body lift, I want to put nerf bars on to ease entering/exiting. I also want to mount them as close to the cab as possible so there is not a huge gap between the step and the cab.

    Any ideas, suggestions would be appreciated

    I have black westin nerf bars for the ext cab 4 dr. They are mounted to the frame. They are not very far away from the cab they are like perfect when u put your feet out the door it has a very small drop and your on them. They are great to get in too. The only think with black is you have to take care of em already have small scratches but no biggie i expected it i waxed them sunday and they looked great. If you do get nerf bars let me suggest you get mud flaps because if you dont have any the truck will throw mud and rocks at the nerf bars and nick and chip them. My nerf bars havent got muddy or dirty towards the front where the mudflaps are im sure they saved them from chipping many times.

    one more suggestion. Look at the back country nerf bars they seem to be bigger around and the step is more aggressive they look nice they guy swore up and down to me that they were the best om the market today supposedly they are guarenteed against pitting but where i got my liner and bars put on they couldnt get them and i liked the westin so i decided on the westin (they were only $225 for the westin installed).     What else is on that website? I knew about 2 months ago they were getting rid of the orange (forgot the real name) interior and switching to the neutral i heard its real nice though. i also heard theres a new silver, orange, and green exterior colors coming out.

    As far as my source, I was told about the order dates, plant shutdown dates, and expected delivery by the fleet manager at the dealership I placed my 2001 order with. I heard about one plant having 2001 prior to the shutdown from a family member in the industry.

    I compared the color charts for the Silverado and the GMC Sierra. They are the same. The 2000 Sierra had the Storm Gray. The salesman I've been working with said that CHEV and GMC call the same colors different names sometimes. For 2000 the Chev Carmine Red was supposed to be the same as the GMC Toreador Red. Looks like the colors for 2001 are the same codes, colors and names for both Chev and GMC...

    You have a 2000 Silverado, therefore you can turn on the foglights without the headlights on.

    Hit the dome light override switch 4 times to defeat the auto headlight controls. Then you can turn on whatever you want, including the foglights.

    Did your dealer have a chance to look at you leaking rear diff? I have the 4:10 axle which was rebuilt when I first bought my truck because of the whining noise at speeds above 30 mph. They replaced the ring, pinion, bearings, and bushing which resolved the noise. Now, with 3500 miles, my rear diff looks similar to yours. Maybe I should have insisted on a complete new rear end.

    One other sound that I notice is during acceleration (most noticeable from a stop) which seems to have a harmonic resonance off the drivers window. It almost sounds like the rumble from a set of glass packs but once the tranny shifts down, the sound seems to disappear. I can't hear if I sit on the passenger side though. This is the reason I posted the driveline growl question but the reply from Obyone would lead me to believe this is not what I'm experiencing. Any ideas? Thanks

    It looks like GM eliminated the Ext Cab Long Bed 2500 non HD model, and the 2500 non HD 2wd Ext Cab Short Bed model for 2001.

    Looks like the beginning of the elimination of this truck class altogether, like Ford.

    I don't know why manufactures copy one another so much. Why not be unique, and offer something nowbody else does, especially when its an excellent product like the 2500 series trucks are.

    I felt this way when they eliminated the 2-door Tahoe. Maybe 2-doors don't sell as well as 4-doors, but if you have the only one, you'll get all the sales!!!

    I hear you about the 2 door tahoes. My dad was gonna get one until he heard they werent gonna make the 2 door anymore and he didnt want the old style (no beer pun intended) when the new style was coming out in a few months. They do have 2 door tahoes though. In mexico i had a pic in my old truckin magazine they didnt look all that good. It had the Z71 sticker like the trucks on the back too.

    Ryan, $500-$600 isn't bad, for some reason I thought you said damage was on door. For DRL overide truck has to be running & only lasts until you shut off the vehicle then you have to repeat process all over again, stupid, stupid ,stupid idea on GM's part. I would rather turn my lights on when I want them on period.
    Watch out on taking up two parking spaces though there are LURDS out there that get PO'd with people who do that and do damage just for spite. They are usually the ones who NEVER take care of ANYTHING they own.

    Tim....... Unfortunately I commute 100 miles a day to work so I use my 40mpg CRX instead of my 15mpg Silverado, the truck is used weekends & for camping & dog shows with the misses, I admit though that I look for reasons to drive it when I'm home.

    Obyone...... I took one week off when I was out in Denver 26th thru 1st, saw a few Silverado's out there, none as nice as mine though, come back & over 400 posts behind, so I just skipped over most & started fresh..... you guys all talk to much don't you have anything better to do with your time......LOL

    For the most part I just read the posts now, don't get on as often as I used to with things going on here at work.

    Now for those of you who can make it to the east coast, there will be a beer bash at Limerock Park Racetrack in Conneticut Memorial Day weekend. I'll be in the camping area with the best looking Silverado camped out for the 4 day weekend watching the races & whoopin it up, if you can't make it I'll be thinkin of ya...... NOT!!!!!!! LOL

    Yes its new its like on old cars the neutral color not tan but not grey its a nice color. I seen a small sample of it its hard to describe. Itll look real nice in all the color trucks

    I had a 70 series "big block" Flowmaster installed last Friday. It's a single in, dual output muffler and the quietest Flowmaster has to offer. I put 2.5" chrome tips straight out under the bumper. It has a nice mellow tone through acceleration, and is very tolerable at highway speeds. It gets my two thumbs up!

    you can "dome override with the engine running or not running (as long as the key is in the run position). however you cannot permanently program the automatic lights. each time the key is turned to the off position, the auto headlights reset to coming on by themselves (as do the drl's). oh by the way, i'll let you know how "fuel" sounds live in concert after i get back from july fourth weekend. going camping and to see metallica at rockingham dragway in nc on july 1st. wahoo...man, can't wait for that one.

    Just found out that my Silverado ext cab 4x4 has been built, dealer say`s it is going to take 2 weeks to get it to the dealership, seems kind of long to me. I live in Minnesota, can`t wait to get it, has anyone else`s truck taken this long to ship?

    i had the same problem you're experiencing. went
    to my dealer and they sent me to their glass shop
    and they supplied me with a tube of polyurethane
    sealant. i wanted to do it myself so they gave me
    a partial tube. my guess is that it's not cheap,
    but it sure did the trick. hope this helps you
    out.

    I have a 1999 Silverado 2wd Ext.Cab. I do all my own oil changes but have yet to grease the truck.
    Does anyone know approx. how many fittings there
    are to be greased on this truck? I've located at least 6 at tie rod ends, etc. Also should any
    special type of grease be used such as moly,etc.

    Mark, I haven't taken time to visit the dealer about my rear differential seep. I'll make it in before too long.

    butchk, I believe the consensus is 11 fittings on the front end.

    Ryan, the dome override isn't going to do what you want. Even in disable mode, you have to at least have the parking lights on to have the fog lights on. Redirecting these functions is simple by just messing with the control line for the appropriate relay. No need to bother with the computer.

    Finally the 2000 Silverado service manuals are available! I've been checking Helm every few days and just now was able to order one.

    The site is www.helminc.com. Make sure you get the "2000 NS P/U TAHO YUKO SUBU SM" manual where NS stands for New Style. The p/n is GMT00CK8. The OS Old Style trucks have the same p/n without the 8 on the end.

    Re. thrashers' post 54 and kieschnick's response in post 85. I agree with kieschnick that the series 70 with the dual out is a great sounding system. I have one on a 2000 regular cab with the 5.3L engine (which, incidentally, I took off a 1999 extended cab-the exhaust system, not the engine). The system for the extended cab has a resonator (according to Flowmaster, it is necessary in order to eliminate a harmonic distortion in the cab), and removing it to make it fit the 2000 slightly increased the exhaust noise level.

    Kieschnick said that he used 2.5 inch extensions with his system, and I have done that in the past. The system I currently have, however, came with 2 inch chrome tips as in intergal part of the system. I don't think they look as good as the slightly larger tips, and I discussed this with Flowmaster. According to them (and keeping in mind that they are in business to sell exhaust related products), the larger tips can sometimes create an "echo chamber" which, in turn, can adversely affect performance.

    Well truck is in the shop :( i feel like a part of me is missing. My truck drives so much better than my old S-10 i hate driving that damn thing now. This is gonna be a long 2 days for me.

    Thanks everyone about the override thing i pulled into the bodyshop this morning and i tested it and it worked but like someone said you have to at least have the parking lights on to have the fog lights on. Is there anyway to just have the foglights on??? Im guessing there is no way to do it. Oh well ill have to live with it.

    Thanks for the responses. I just talked to the Midas guy who said he can only get 40 series Flowmasters and they're on back-order. I told him how much I dislike the Midas brand muffler that he talked me into so he's trying to find me a Flowmaster locally. I guess I'm kind of stuck using Midas, seeing as how I've got their muffler now. The 40 series was great on my 5.9L Ram, hopefully the 5.3L Z71 will sound just as good.

    The 40 series is one of the loudest mufflers Flowmaster makes. I had a standard 40 series on my y2k 5.3l ex-cab and the interior resonance was so loud and annoying I took it back. They exchanged it for a Delta Flow 70 series (the SUV muffler). This dramatically quieted the noise down to an almost undetectable level unless your foot was really in the gas. I did not like this either, so I took it back and they exchanged it again for a Delta Flow 50 series. Now it is perfect, nice rumble, no interior resonance, and when my foot is in it, it is loud; perfect.

    Advice: make sure whatever you get, you get the Delta Flow. They have extra baffles in them to reduce the resonation (wooo, wooo sound). The standard does not. With these new motors it is very annoying.

    In prior postings, I've read of loose baffles in some of the factory Silverado mufflers, but am curious why it seems so many people are replacing their mufflers so soon...
    Is it just for sound? performance? ???
