Well, your comments about what your wife is looking to buy threw me a bit. So yeah, stick around and enjoy the Q7 posts. And we'll look for the full blown report after you see it in person. :-)

This is at long, long last what I have been waiting for: a very, very safe vehicle. The gas prices are a pain -- I hate giving terriorists our money; and all because of the Republicans. I plan to get the Q7 with the side view cameras. I will then wear a bullet proof helmet and vest -- right now I just use a motor cycle helmet and pillows.

For a rather reasonable assessment of your vehical safety see:

    http://www.informedforlife.org/

From his rather rigourious analysis the safest is:

    Acura RL 4-DR. w/Side Airbags + w/ESC
    #1 of 247 (lower risk)

The closest to a Audi Q7 might be the VW Toureg:
    Volkswagen Touareg 4-Dr. w/Side Airbags (SUV)+ w/ESC
    #132 of 247 (med. risk)

    BMW X5 4-DR. w/Side Airbags + w/ESC (SUV)
    #116 of 247 (med. risk)

Its my guess the Q7 will be the new number 1!

Please, let's steer clear of political flames - there are other venues devoted to that kind of activity.

Ok finally the moment we've all been waiting for.... So I have an invitation to drive the Q7 on April 29th as they are having the Audi Streets of Tomorrow events. If you are interested to see if they will be touring in your neighborhood here is their website. They have time slots that you are suppose to register for.

I have on order an S Line 3.0TDI in silver, the dealer in Brighton had a LHD vehicle in over the weekend. Apparently there are 30 in the UK for demos.
Currently have a BMW X5 3.0 sport petrol, the Q7 is far superior both in looks and drive. The air suspension gives a good ride, rear camera is a great feature.
My vehicle is due in late June.

I am planning on buying a new automobile around October or November. I live in the Pittsburgh -Penna. area 9 months of the year and in central Florida 3 months of the year(snowbird). I am looking at several automobiles, one of them is an Audi. I now drive a 2002 Mercedes E class wagon. Does anyone know of any dealers who will deal, and or give good service. Any help would be great. Thanks

So at last... I was able to drive a Q7 since they are touring with the "Streets of Tomorrow". A pretty nice drive. It had good pick up and seemed to drive fairly smooth. I especially liked the rear park-assist camera feature as it is really advanced compared to other vehicles which have a similar option. The car is a bit on the long side and is challenging to see out the rear windows with passengers. You have to depend on the ample sized rear view mirrors in that case. The lane-changing side assist feature was pretty cool.
  • esfesf Member Posts: 1,020
Would you think those options are worth the extra money? I have yet to drive the new Q7, but it seems very innovative.

by my local Audi dealer and they had a new Q7 on display outside. I plan on stopping by tomorrow and really checking it out
  • dhamiltondhamilton Member Posts: 878
and it's going to stay a demo for test drives only. They were kind enough to let me drive it and here are my thoughts

Vault on 4 wheels. It's incredibly solid feeling. The interior feels like an A6, or A8. very comfortable. The quality of the gauges and dials are in a league of their own. [no surprise there]
It is a heavy vehicle, equipped with the 4.2 FSI v8 it still was a tad sluggish. I'm sure it would get better after the initial break in period. The V6 will come later in the year according to the sales lady. It will be the 3.6 in the Passat. With the heft of this vehicle I would imagine it would feel much like the Touareg when it came out. Snail like. While I didn't take any curves fast their didn't seem to be much body roll. The color was the Lava quartz grey [I think it's called] Very attractive. The floor carpet looks like bad shag carpet from Austin Powers bedroom. This was a little dissapointing. I remember thinking the same thing at the Houston auto show and saying to myself, "I sure hope that doesn't make it to production" The stereo seemed descent as well [bose] and there was plenty of room to rest my arms while driving. On the left they could go 2 places. The window sill if sitting high enough,[it's very thick] and as well the normal spot just below it by the door handle. The seats are adjustable in almost every way possible. No dead spots that I could tell due to no narrow b pillars down the back.
The most unfortunate news was that [Mark please close your ears] She said there would be no diesel option. I hope she's wrong as I've heard otherwise, but she said she had just gotten back from training in Dallas and that's what they had told her. If I can think of anything else I'll post later. This will hopefully be my wife's next car if she doesn't like the new redesign of the X5 better.
  • chaddy75chaddy75 Member Posts: 48
I think the lane change side assist is a little over the top although useful. I would opt for the rear camera or at least the beeper so I know how close I am to rear vehicle. I have that now and swear by it. In fact, I'd rather have that than a camera if I had the choice.
  • esfesf Member Posts: 1,020
Have you ever had a backup camera? My wife has one on her Lexus, and she said that one of her main priorities in getting a new car in January is that it must have a rear backup camera- no if's or but's about it!

It is useful, and I do hope that Mercedes-Benz offers it on the E-Class sedan! (I might as well go to that forum...)

I agree with most of your review.

The Q7 feels incredibly solid. We drove one with the air suspension, and in dynamic mode, it feels more like a sports car than a 5200 lb SUV. And even with the 20 inch tires, the ride quality was very good.

The lines on the Q7 are quite beautifull in person. The huge grill looks great and everything is chiseled in good proportion. I think this is one of the best looking SUV's on the market.

Some have quibbled about performance, but I thought the V8 was plenty powerfull. The throttle is very precise and I didn't notice any hint of lag.

The back-up cameras and side assist work quite good as well.

The only things that I see as small drawbacks is that the huge 3 glass panorama sunroof does take up a bit of rear headroom, but it's not too bad. And you can't totally close off the roof just like the A3, so it might get hot in the peak summertime.

Also, the choice of carpet in the Q7 struck me a as bit weird. It has a multi-colored "berber" type look, and at first glance it's a bit strange. But I guess for clean up and hiding dirt in an SUV, it'll hold up over time. Just buy some all rubber mats and you'll be OK.

Overall, I give the Q7 a 9.5 on a 10 scale. This is an awesome vehicle for Audi.

What fun! Shopped the others, but waited for Audi, and am very pleased with the first impressions.

    Some observations -

    Spectacular aesthetics. Silver/black.
Solid feel. Very stable on the road.
4.2 pulls well, and sounds great. Not sure about 3.6 (not driven)
I don't think there is a bad color exterior from the samples.
The limestone grey interior (based on a swatch) is not as light as it looks in cyberspace (good thing).
    Side mirrors a good size.
The backup camera is cool, as is the side assist, but from where I sat watching the wife drive, not used. Still no substitute for turning your head.
Plenty of second row space for tall folks.
3rd row for "wee folk" only - at least for extended trips.

Only thing missing for the kiddies are the rear seat tv monitors. I know, I know, but the kids require transportation too sometimes, right? Life is what it is.

    Anyone selling under MSRP?

Got into and behind the wheel of a Q7 yesterday.

The thing from my perspective is HUGE.

Reminded me, inside, of an A6 and seemed very well made.

From the outside and I know I'll get a whippin' -- gulp, well the dang thing looks like a Chrysler Pacifica.

Maybe, maybe, it will grow on me.
  • rjlaerorjlaero Member Posts: 659
I agree this vehicle has a "huge" presence to it. But for me, I don't see much of Pacifica clone in the Q7. The Q7 has a lot more chisled and sleek profile to it. I especially love the front end. The grill is titanic in size, but it works well with the whole profile of the Q7.

The Q7 does have a certain menacing and agressive look to it, and I think that's what sets it apart from the whole crowded SUV market.
  • esfesf Member Posts: 1,020
Yes I agree with you- the Q7 is quite handsome.

I saw an Oyster Grey Metallic Q7 4.2 at the Chicago Auto Show, and I think it's one of the best-looking SUVs ever; for sure better looking than the Cayenne (the Cayenne has terrible standard wheels on all but the Turbo S version).

Also, the interior is quite nice because of its relationship with the A6- but that's what we expect from Audi these days! There is not one model in their lineup with an unattractive interior, and they cannot be compared to any car (except maybe the Range Rover) under $100,000. There is no company that has such consistency- under $100,000 or not.

I look forward to Audi catching up with BMW- and fast. Their goal is to sell 1.4 million vehicles by 2010, BMW wants to sell 1.6 million the same year. In proportion to today, that's a small margin!

I've seen many a spy-shot of the next X5, and it looks very similar to the current version, but Bangle has ruined the rear (the trunk window appears to be sloping), and the rear light clusters, although they're not actually in the picture (the shape of them), looks unappealing. Can't wait for the Q7 to remain the sportiest SUV!

The dealer let me take the Q7 over the holiday weekend, so I have been driving it for 2 days. I drive a Lexus RX300 now, and compared to it, the Q7 seems huge. I think the size is accentuated further by the Q7's aggressive styling. I have to admit, the size at first was a bit overwhelming, but after driving it for 2 days, I absolutely love the thing. Every time I look out in the driveway and see it sitting there, I want to drive it some more.

Feels very solid, yet powerful with the smooth V8. Slipping the transmission into the Sport mode made the driving experience feel almost sport-car like, which says a lot considering the size and weight of this vehicle.

At first, I wanted the luxury 6-seater configuration, but after experiencing the third row seats, I'm going to go with the second-row bench for more flexibility. At this point, I am confident that a Q7 is in my near future. I have a 2006 A6 now and love it, and my past cars have been two different A4's prior to the Lexus RX300, which sadly has never satisfied me. Audi truly is a step above the rest in my opinion.

Now, it's just choosing colors. Has any one seen the Cobalt Blue or Condor Gray metallic on a Q7 yet? Also, what about the Espresso Brown/Tamo Brown interior? Choices, choices, choices . . .

Oh, by the way, an Audi executive at the Chicago Streets of Tomorrow driving experience told us that they have added the option to order an alcantara headliner on the Q7. This is suppose to be available now as an option. Apparently, it's a hand-stitched?, suede-like headliner that is darker than the normal headliner. He raved about how awesome it looks.
  • sam818sam818 Member Posts: 127
Latest check of the Audi USA webs site now shows the Adaptive Cruise Control as an available option.
Can any dealer confirm that it is now available, and may if fact be installed on some shipped vehicles?
Also, I have been unable to confirm, but is this ACC the latest generation, that brings a car to a full stop in traffic?
  • xy46xy46 Member Posts: 26
The dealer told me yesterday that they are now able to order this on the Q7. Brochure says it is the latest generation ACC, but I agree, it's worth confirming.
  • rjlaerorjlaero Member Posts: 659
The Condor Gray is a very nice color in person. But it has little resemblence to a light gray, so it's a bit deceiving from what you would think it's like. It looks more like a very light green than anything else.

I think the Q7 looks best in lighter colors. It's a big vehicle and I don't think the darker colors do it justice.

I can't wait to see a Quartz Gray car w/ the Espresso interior.

The upcoming 2007 Mazda CX-9 looks just as good as the 2007 Audi Q7 and it will probably fe just as fast if not faster.

I got a look at the Q7 this past weekend at an Atlanta dealership. Was scheduled for a test drive; but a dealership employee hit a rock parking the Q7 and it was in the body shop being repaired.

Only negative comments about the car concerned the rails that the second row seats ride on. When the seats are all the way back (needed for people six feet and above) the rails for the second row seats are exposed (tripping hazard). Berber carpet was not appealing. Also, with the second row seats all the way back left a limited cargo area.

Front seating area and instrumentation was excellent. Not sure about front grill (very large in person). Rear view camera would be a must have for this SUV.

Overall I must say that I like the Q7, but I can't get past the fact that Audi has neglected to a include rear facing dvd player and ipod integration. I'm looking to get the rid of my wife's '00 A6 4.2, but we haven't decided if these 2 omissions will be show stoppers.

Can anyone tell me why Audi decided against these two options??? :(
  • thebody5thebody5 Member Posts: 20
Well they did not decided against the rear dvd it is coming later this year. Will be available to order in the fall. Ipod intergration is hard with this car because the wiring for the car is all fiber optics and Audi and Apple have not figured out a way to intergrate the two. Word from audi is that by November there will be some type of Ipod intergration for the A6,A8, and Q7
  • bwedotnetbwedotnet Member Posts: 48
Picked ours up yesterday. It is for the wife so she got to pick color - Calla White/Black with Panoramic Roof and 20" wheels. It is an awesome vehicle. Very athletic appearance for a big SUV.

We have an inexpensive portable dual DVD system that we only use for long trips so DVD option was not even something we wanted. The dealer did have an DVD option (aftermarket) that looked nice.

Contrary to previous readers we thought the 'berber' carpet was nice. As usual Audi did a great job creating a sophisticated and quality interior.
  • sam818sam818 Member Posts: 127
Did you get the adaptive cruise control?
The best feature on the Q7.
  • bwedotnetbwedotnet Member Posts: 48
I did not get the adaptive cruise control. I did not see a lot of value in it. Cool technical gadget? Yes. Do I really need it or would I use it? No.
  • esfesf Member Posts: 1,020
I'm in the same position as you- my wife has an RX330, and I am on my fourth Audi (S4 Cabriolet). In fact, I had a 2000 A6 2.7T before this and loved it.

I just don't think I need an SUV as big as the Q7. My son is in college and my daughter is in law school, and so we only have my 13-year old son at home. We're still going to drive it, and my son has seen three in person and loved it (he's a gearhead like me).

I love Audis. They make interiors that no one under $100,000 can match, have impeccable German engineering, and their style is elegant, aero and understated. They truly are fabulous cars. And yet, my wife would like something different- we don't want three Audis in the house. Would that not be a bit odd?

The reason we're getting rid of our 2004 RX330 so soon (in January) is because she had a '98 RX300 before and is tired of the same car. We have some good choices lined up:

    2007 Mercedes E350 4Matic Sport
    Range Rover Sport HSE
    Porsche Cayenne S (very unlikely)
    2007 (or 2008) BMW X5
Mercedes CLK350 convertible (more unlikely than the Cayenne; it would be stupid to have two convertibles even if this is her dream car)
Jaguar XJ (also unlikely because of its vast size and pricetag)

As you can see, we have some odd choices there. You can pretty much cross the Cayenne, CLK and XJ off the list. If I wanted a Porsche, I'd buy one for myself-- and I'd get a REAL Porsche! I also already have a convertible, so there's no need for a CLK. The E is our Mercedes on that list. XJ is not only too big and too expensive, but Jaguar has wavering quality and image issues.

So that leaves some nice cars. My son wants the Range Rover Sport, I want the E-Class, my wife wants both. I don't know what we're going to end up with.

I've seen the beautiful Alcantara headliner on the A8. If you're getting the Q7, you must get that!
  • xy46xy46 Member Posts: 26
Drove an '05 BMW X5 at the Audi "Streets of Tomorrow" event in Chicago about 6 weeks ago - it didn't come close to the Q7. For example, I couldn't believe how much you had to turn the steering wheel compared to the Q7 on the same corners. Hopefully, the newer ones are better, but I'd compare the X5 to the Q7 before purchasing. I didn't think it came close in a lot of areas.

Ordered my own Q7 today. Got the Premium, and then splurged by getting all the extras, except the Alcantara headliner. It just seemed over-the-top after adding the adaptive cruise control, adaptive air suspension, 20" wheels, etc. Never spent this much on a "vehicle" before, but figured, what the heck!

Struggled in choosing the color, though. I am a silver kind of guy, but the silver Q7 at the "Audi Streets of Tomorrow" event just didn't do the Q7-style justice. Went back and forth between dark and light colors. The light colors make the grill and the lower "air scoops" stand out more, while the dark colors brought out the lights more and gave the front a more aggressive look. Thought about the Condor Gray, but without seeing it in person, I hesitated. The dealer had one already in the Lava Gray - pearl effect, and it looked great, and I think I like that aggressive look better, anyway. So, ordered mine with that paint color.

A little concerned though because initially Audi says it won't be made now until mid-September, while dealer's other recent orders show production in less than a month. The dealer is going to call and check. I don't think I can wait until a late October or November delivery. I'm not that patient!

Awesome vehicle, imho the best suv on a market today, however … in my test drive I’ve experience some steering wheel vibrations. It happened only once at higher speed 50-60 mph, but because of the traffic couldn’t check it out again. Any ideas?
  • tomtomtomtomtomtom Member Posts: 491
Did you have to pay full MSRP? Or your dealer was willing to give some discount?
  • rbirns1rbirns1 Member Posts: 314
Steering wheel vibration at high speed is usually caused a wheel slightly out of balance. Very minor issue, easy to fix (5 minutes at any tire shop), and really has nothing to do with the car.

If it happened only once, it may even have been the pavement on that road. Don't let this affect your Q7 decision either way.

    Hey,
I'm looking at purchasing a Q7 Premium and was wondering if, with the bluetooth option, I can connect my cell phone to the car and have control of the phone via the steering wheel. I am basically just looking for a way to answer an incoming call or end a call by using the steering wheel.

    Thanks
  • rjlaerorjlaero Member Posts: 659
Yes...you can dial everything from the steering wheel with Audi's bluetooth.

thanks a ton. :) i think the 3.6 premium is the better choicec considering gas prices. just hope the engine will be powerful enough. also, i was told that the 3.6 was not available with the 6 seat configuration, do you know if that is true? maybe it will be ofered later on?
  • rjlaerorjlaero Member Posts: 659
I think you're correct. Right now, only the 4.2's have the luxury 6 seater.
  • xy46xy46 Member Posts: 26
Being told by dealer that my Q7 on order is delayed for production until mid-September because of delay in getting parts for rearview camera. Totally bummed - I don't think I can wait that long. Has anyone else heard anything about this delay?
  • rjlaerorjlaero Member Posts: 659
Yup...that, too. All 4.2's are delayed at the production plant for a extra 1-2 months if you pick the technology package with the back-up camera. Maybe Audi under-estimated the popularity of the tech option, and just can't fill orders fast enough with the back-up camera.

Has anyone had problems with their Q7 (or any audi). I am a little worried about reliability conidering how unreliable the vw tourag is...
  • xy46xy46 Member Posts: 26
Previously have had a '96 A4, '98 A4, '98 A6, and now '06 A6. All were/are awesome cars, except the '98 A6. Even that was alright, but it seemed to be plagued with a lot of little problems, although I've been told that after '98 they got much better. Even with the problems, we kept it until we traded for the '06 A6. We've had the '06 A6 for several months and it's been great.
  • rjlaerorjlaero Member Posts: 659
The Q7 shares only 15% parts with the T -Reg and Porsche. It's really a totally different vehicle. The MMI and navi are from the current generation A6. Audi spent close to 3 years preparing and testing this vehicle for market. The T Reg was a disaster for VW. I think the Q7 will fare a lot better.
  • quattroporte12quattroporte12 Member Posts: 178
thanks, i dont think reliability will be an issue as audi continues to improve quality. i was wondering about the 20" wheels on the 3.6 premium. on the 4.2 premium they are $800, and on the standard 4.2, they are $1,600. do you know if they are $1,600 or $800 on the 3.6 premium?
    thanks
  • rjlaerorjlaero Member Posts: 659
The 3.6 Premium wheel pricing is the same as the standard 4.2. $800 for 19's, and $1600 for 20's.

You cannot upgrade the wheels on the base 3.6 model.

For everyone thinging about buying a Audi Q7 I recommend waiting for fall of this year. The 2007 Acura MDX looks to be a good competitor in categories like technology, size, and seating. It will most definintely win in 0-60 time, fuel economy, and price.
