    mkazarian1,

The high-series console is a solid cabinet-like storage bin integrated into the front armrest, unlike the soft pack storage bag in the low series console under the armrest. The high-series console also has rear seat controls for the radio and climate settings.

    Hi Greenwade,
I, too, am waiting for my Estate Green 4x4 fully loaded here in Atlanta, GA. Kind of jealous that your build date is ahead of mine. Maybe they'll be 'created' together. I ordered on June 10, given VIN on 6/22 and given build date of 8/7-8/14 on June 27. THIS IS NERVE RACKING!

On my drive to work Monday, I spotted a new owner of a white ST (me=jealous). And, on my way home from work yesterday, a brand spankin' new black one within a few miles of my home (me=more jealous). I wanted to be pretty original in my area of town, but it looks like two proud ST owners beat me to the punch.
I can say, however, that I have not seen ANY Estate Green sporties AT ALL on the road. I have seen one at a dealer which inspired me to get this color.
My dealer told me today that I should be receiving the letter without question. He still hasn't given me an answer on the Skid Plates. I am trying to stick it to them, much like the tonneau is getting stuck to the dealers. I don't want to be ripped off at the parts counter when it wasn't my fault Ford advertised the part and weren't able to produce my vehicle with it. He is checking with his District Manager for
    'monies' to do this.

Anyone have any suggestions on window tint for the ST? I want to have matched tint to the factory and I have learned this can't be exact.
Please help with window tint suggestions. I don't care about my state's legal limits. Those are such a joke anyway!

Did you need to order your ST to get the letter on the Factory price? I am tired of waiting (ordered May 13 - no build date yet). A local dealer has 2 loaded units in stock and I am tempted to buy one if I can get the cover for the factory cost.
  • bjohn1225bjohn1225 Member Posts: 16
Don't know if you had to order an ST to get the letter. I had ordered mine, but I would guess that you'd get the letter if you bought one off the lot as well. I'd call Ford to be sure. A few earlier postings have the number to call on the Tonneau cover.
  • markiem1markiem1 Member Posts: 4
I had also ordered the ST, but when I was told a fully loaded white 4x4(-tonneau) was going to show up on the lot in a matter of days I jumped on it, and it came in the very next day. I took delivery the last week of May and got my Tonneau letter last week.
I am apprehensive about the offer because you must pay by credit card, yet you don't receive the tonneau for 6 weeks. Not crazy about having to pay interest on something that I have no idea when I will receive it. I will wait to see if someone actually receives one.

Did anyone who got the high end console have a cd holder inside the console or was it bare like mine?

On the Power Steering Shudder, My ST only has the PSS when I am in 4x4 mode, not in 4x2 mode. Does anyone else with a 4x4 ST notice the same??

    All this talk about "the shimmy".......when vehicles are shipped it is normal for the factory to over inflate the tires. This is done to allow for less bouncing around during transit. The dealers are supposed to have the vehicle inspected by the service dept. before delivery to the new customer. The problem is, that many times the customer wants the new car so much he says "just gimme the car, I wanna drive it" and the dealer complies. (sometimes the dealers service dept. sucks and just does not do it). In either case, the "SHIMMY" that everyone is so wigged out about is very probably over inflated tires. The gas cap rub on some ST's and the moon roof leak are legitimate issues, but you can probably solve your other nagging problem with a utensil. To those already driving their ST, get ready for some 4th of July head turning on the road, and for those waiting, it is worth it (*but its still just a car:}
  • hmlrht1hmlrht1 Member Posts: 19
first I would like to comment on GODAWGS2000 statement. The shimmy is now called pulsing and it is not due to overinflation of tires. Now I had underinflated rear tires. The 15" is supposed to be 26 in front and 36 in rear. Mine were both 26. I also had tires that weren't balanced properly at factory and then again at the dealer. So I have had a lot of shimmy from unbalanced tires but the pulsing(shimmy) at low speed is real. The next comment is a question to all. I have read here on the board about the cargo cage and trying to find a way to secure it. When I lock the tailgate on mine, the cargo cage can't come out without breaking lock on tailgate because the cargo cage has to be raised straight up from the truck to remove. Am I missing something here? Thanks for your comments.

Hey guys guess what I saw last night at work! Well if you have read my comments over at Nissan vs. Ford I was in an heated discussion about how Ford was a better product than Nissan. My point in being is where I live there are more Ford vehicles used as taxi's than any other vehicle. The Ford Explorer and the Crown Vic is the most used vehicle out here in Las Vegas.

So whats up with the Bulletin? I saw a "Sport Trac" taxi last night !!!!!!!!!!!! Yes can you believe it.!!!!!!! AND GUESS WHAT COVERED THE BACK BED ????????? THE TONNEAU COVER !!!!!!!!!!! WE HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR !!!!!!!! FOR SO LONG !!!!!!
I got about a 10 second look before it drove off with another fare. The back portion was flipped up over the front. As far as I could see the locking mechanism was pretty impressive. It looked like the cover has a inter and the outer shell to it. Leaving the locks covered underneath. Unlike those after market types Ive seen. Looking at the center area, I was looking for what I thought would be some big deal of special seals of some sort, but could only see the aluminum piano hinge that enabled it to flip up one way or other. It did have a seal around the edges under the lip. It didn't look as if it curved over the edge of the bed as much as I have seen other covers on other pick-ups. It did have a rubber edge seal all the way around the under side of the edge. Was this the area that was causing the leakage? Don't know. As I mentioned I didn't notice any real seals in the middle where the hinge was. Maybe I missed it. And as for the texture. Its much like the upper edges of the bed protector or edge covers. Not smooth. What looked impressive was the locking mechanism. It had a hard feel to it. I was knocking on it to see how hard it was and not to get the attention of the driver. As I mentioned it only lasted about 10 seconds ant then off it drove. Well it leaves me with a few questions. How did a cab company get a Sport Trac with the "Tonneau Cover" before us guys who have been waiting so long. Could it be another test for it? What do you guys think?

Got word yesterday my ST in White with the tonneau will be built w/o 7/24 and should arrive at the dealer no later than mid August. I ordered the vehicle on May 13, so the total wait will be about 13 weeks. I hope everyone else that has been waiting will also see their ST that week!
  • greenwadegreenwade Member Posts: 24
dberndt - What do you mean when you talk about the skid plates? Is that something that is part of the fully loaded package?

When I talked to the plant two weeks ago I asked them about the tonneau cover. I canceled it in May because I thought I would get the truck later this year. I asked if they can add the cover if the truck was being built in July. They said that they will try. Hope the cover is included. I now see a light at the end of the tunnel but going nuts waiting.

Has anyone out West received a letter from Ford yet? I bought my ST in April from Evergreen Ford in Washington and haven't gotten anything from Ford about the Tonneau cover. After reading lasvegan's post, I hope that he was describing the Ford tonneau cover.

No tonneau letter yet....I purchased in mid-May. Still waiting for my letter.
  • hmlrht1hmlrht1 Member Posts: 19
I got my letter on July 1. Bought my ST June 1. Live in AZ if that helps.
  • bigdogst1bigdogst1 Member Posts: 22
Regarding the ongoing tonneau cover saga: I purchased mine off the lot in March and did receive my letter in the mail (am also in San Jose, Ca....west coast)
Regarding window tint: I too think the various state laws governing how dark the windows can be is a bunch of poo!
I had mine done to match the back windows and it looks most excellent. Don't skimp because a good job will run you about $100
Regarding the speakers: I removed the back door panel to uncover that the speakers are indeed a 6x8 which leads me to wonder why Ford did not use a circular speaker to match the molded grill....guess those will have to be replaced!
Regarding the gas door rub: none to mention
Regarding the PS pulse: My ST has 6500 miles does pulse at low speeds in a tight turn.
My Dennis Miller rant: to the guy who was considerate enough to spill 5 gallons of white paint in the middle of the road and leave it for unknowing drivers (my wife) to spray all over their brand new 2001 FORD ST please purchase a tonneau cover, a top, or secure your crap so my dear spouse does not spend another 2 hours pleading with the local car detailer to get rid of every speck of white paint....which they did! (except for inside the tire tread)

Have had mine a month..1200 miles..20+mpg highway and 15+ in town. 4x2..3.73 gears. Received "the letter" about "the cover" last week. I'll probably get it but would like to know: how heavy, easy to take off alone and put back on alone? The parts guy said the price in the newest catalog shows this going for just over $1000! His cost was about $800! I asked about the "molded" mud flaps, said they are available..get this..in WHITE ONLY!!! HUH? That will look sweet..you can order a leisure suit with that too!
One more thing..have had a little rain here in Mesa AZ..finally! I had the rear window down when it started to rain. I powered up the window with the rain coming in and the window went up almost all the way then right back down..3 times. The 4th time I turned and HELD the knob to the right and it finally went all the way up. Awfully touchy "pinch" setting..I'm assuming that's what it is..will keep ya'll informed.
This thing handles and rides great at any speed. Still getting the looks..not me..the truck!

on July 1st. Purchased ST on June 12. I called today the toll-free number listed on the letter, had no problems getting through and ordered the Tonneau.

Markiem: Normally, when placing an order such as this, the credit card isn't charged until the item is shipped. You also have some options through the credit card company if the cover never comes in. If you are interested in the cover, you can pay $590 now or $1000 + tax and install charges later.

These are just a few things to think about.

    wpoe
  • zack1000zack1000 Member Posts: 84
    wpoe--

Why don't you give Ford your credit card number and see if they immediately charge the $590 before you speculate about what they will or will not do.

I'm inclined to agree with Markiem about being hesitant to order this item. Especially since no one this board has actually received one and its been delayed numerous times.

The letter gives me until 9/30/00 to buy it at the $590 price, you don't have to buy it now to get that price as you claim.

I'd prefer to wait until someone actually has one and recommends it before I give Ford my credit card number.

And who would be stupid enough to pay install charges for an item that's designed to be removed and installed by the consumer?
  • zack1000zack1000 Member Posts: 84
    hmlrht1--

There have been posts to this board that people are able to remove the cargo cage while the tail gate is locked. I also recall seeing ideas about a modification that could be made to prevent the cage from being removed. I don't think anyone has said that they've actually done the modification. But if someone has, it would be great if they could tell everyone exactly what they did.
  • wpoewpoe Member Posts: 41
I have ordered it, and I will let you know when I am charged for the cover and when the I am notified that the cover has arrived.

I don't know a lot about the install or the removal processes yet, so the install charge might be non-existent like you say.

Has anyone been having problems with the rear door's not opening from the inside. At times are rear doors will not open. Have checked the child safety switch. can put it in either position and the door still will not open.

I am going to have the dealer install our soft tonneau cover, buff some paint scratch's and fix the rear doors.

TO all of those with the power steering shimmy/shudder/vibration. If you are in 4x4 mode, it will shudder!!!! This is because of the way 4x4 axles are made, ALL 4x4 vehicles have this, Also, I bought a Sport (not sport trac) last week, it also has the shudder, in 4x2. I will check on the over inflation part right now!
Also, have the gas cap rubbing, but no moonroof so would not know. Thanks for all of the info, wanted a sport trac, but the lease rates, are horrible as compared to the sport.....

Does anyone have the Ford part# for the Sport Trac cargo cage? Would greatly appreciate it.
  • psikomompsikomom Member Posts: 5
Well, I've had my Sport Trac 4x4 for nine hours now. It's in the parking lot where I work at the fire department. I wanted to go out and play with all the knobs and buttons but someone decided to start a BIG fire so I haven't glanced at it once. Now I know about all the problems to look forward to. I hope I'm lucky and have purchased the "perfect trac", which like the perfect man, is probably non existent. But, wish me luck.

In response to #113--The cage can be removed. I didn't think so either till I saw the post in the SportTracClub. Went right outside and within minutes she was loose. With tail gait up and locked all you have to do is push down on the holding clamp/clips--the cage is then pushed down and it's loose. To zack1000--what is needed is something to be put on the bed under the cage--so it can't be pushed down...or on the bottom of the cage that won't allow the down push...I worry about voiding warranty on bed or cage by adding something. Thinking about just running coated combo locks thru the tie down and thru the cage. I would also love to know if anyone has any ideas. (besides leaving in behind or putting it in the back seat!!) Sorry kirbtrac my outfitters book says late availability and shows no part No.

    You'll have a Great Fourth!!!!!
  • dberndtdberndt Member Posts: 45
Hey greenwade (and everyone else of course!),
The skid plates are an optional on the 4x4 but from what I have been told, a smart move to get! Consider it a cheap insurance policy for your ST's underside. They are 106inv/125msrp.
The problem is the skid plates are on a 'materials hold' and the dealer said my order could be pushed back until October. I asked him to lose the plates (for now) to get the ST rolling. I have asked that he put these on after factory at the price we agreed upon when signing the ST deal. Still waiting on a response for this.

Has anyone else been told they can't get the skid plates or, has someone WITH skid plates been given a build date and know for sure they are getting the ST with SKID plates?

On the tonneau letters, I wouldn't fret too much. Remember rule #1 in retail, the customer is always right. Rule #2: Re-read rule #1.
I am sure that the first round of ST owners will be taken care of 'within reason'. As a consumer blowing $27K on a product, I will demand it!

Thought I would try again. How do I get a Ford Outfitter's catalogue? Also, I wanted to upgrade the cloth interior to leather and the dealer said he would try. Seems like a easy request since the S.T. won't be built until August 8. Thanks Merl.
  • hmlrht1hmlrht1 Member Posts: 19
Well I went out and pulled and tugged on the cargo cage with the tailgate closed and locked and you can't move it. You could remove the screws holding the brackets in place and then take it out I suppose. I don't see the reason to go to extra lengths to protect it when it is good the way it is. I have an alarm on the ST and if it's moved that much to take it out the alarm will trip long before the tailgate lock is broken.

So I'm finally taking the time to detail the exterior of my month old ST. When I wash and wipe I dry everything WELL! I'll wipe to ensure that no streaks are present before I wax. I used Meguiars liquid Gold Class for the first time and it works GREAT! Wipes off easily without residue..and what a shine..looks great! But..I digress. As I stated, I wipe everywhere including all around the doors, I'll even shake them to get the water from dripping down on to the newly dried surface. 2 things..if you have the 15" steel rims..they hold water. I can live with that but this next item needs EVERYONES ATTENTION!
Upon wiping the bottom of ALL the doors I noticed...NO PAINT!! A little overspray at best..but I'm looking at BARE METAL folks! Here in Arizona it won't be a problem..no salt on the roads, but back east it will be.
Will someone let me know if I'm alone on this? I hope I am. Another thing for the dealership to do!

Is the Ford plants closed this week and next? Does everything come to a standstill, no allocator running and no office people? When will the allocator start back running?
    Thanks Mel

scoot99: Not true about the shutter with the Sport 4X4, at least not from my experience and I have a 1995.

I forgot who asked about the Ford Outfitters catalog but evidently you will get your catalog after you fill out the survey (approximately one month after you take delivery of your ST). We just filled ours out the other day and if it goes as it has for others who posted, we should get the silly chairs, Swiss Army Knife and the catalog a the same time. We aren't holding our breath but really don't see it as an issue one way or another.

I have been reading all the messages posted on the board for the last few weeks and find them very informative.

I ordered my ST on May 4 and as of last week , have been told that the ST was built on June 21 , and is being shipped via rail, to my local dealer so I should receive the ST in the next week or so.

I ordered the convience group, premium sport group, and the cloth comfort group ,as well as the limited slip rear axle.

My question is, should I be expecting the floor console to include the removable soft storage bag, or will it be similar to the high series floor console that is on the Explorer Sport?

My initial thoughts on the soft storage bag is , I don't care for it.

Oh yes, just thought I would mention that I checked out the 4 ST's parked on the dealer's lot,
the gas doors on all 4 rubbed against the side of the fenders. A recall will be more than likely sent out.

I keep seeing everyone saying,"I got my ST loaded without leather or sunroof."
I got my St with Leather, sunroof, cargo cage, sport package, and payload package. I got everything , but 4WD(not worth $2500 invoice for the little I could use part-time 4WD, now AWD is another thing I wish they would have offered), skid plates or engine block heater.
Since I took ownership for $100 over invoice, 27835 MSRP, on May 10, 2000, an 8 week wait. I have added several items:
    1. Hidden Hitch-tubular reciever hitch
    2. Auto ventshade- ventvisors, sunflector, and Harvest Gold BugFlector II
    3. Light up Ford Emblem
    4. Ford MudFlaps- Yes they are black, NOT white
    5. Spare tire lock & receiver lock
    6. Ford Sport Trac Bed Mat
    7. Dashhugger Dash Cover-Thanks for "Lasvegan's advice"
    8. Ford Locking Gas Caps
I have ordered a brushguard, taillight guards(from www.suvbrushguards.com), elliptical factory crossbars and Ford/Yakima Load Warrior, and Ford tonneau cover.

    Thanks
    Bob

After reading post #134, I decided to check to see if I had any paint under my doors. And guess what.... NOTHING! I am also looking at bare metal or at best a little overspray. What was Ford thinking?

I guess we will just have to add this to the list of other things for the dealer to fix, but I am still loving my Sport Trac. I can't stop cleaning it, driving it, looking at it. I have had for only 2 weeks, and I already have 1200 miles on it. I suppose the newness will wear off, but I am enjoying the rush for now!

RJKUNCLE: I also have leather with the moonroof, and have not heard or read of many that got both. I am amazed at the comfort of the leather seats. I recently sat in a '98 Explorer with leather, and there is NO comparison. These are the softtess leather seats I have felt, with excellent support. By the way, where did you order all those accesories? Around these parts, I can't find a thing in stock, and parts store are not carrying anything yet. Did you get any of it online? If so, where?

Just for the record, with 1200 miles, I have been averaging 16-18.5 MPG, mostly highway driving. Hopefully this will improve when the weather is not so incredible HOT!!! And yes, the gas cap rubs. And yes, I have the pulse in the steering. But no, my moonroof does not leak, that goodness! These minor problems are nothing compared to the pleasure of one of the nicest vehicles I have ever driven, much less owned.
  • craig002craig002 Member Posts: 32
I washed mine yesterday, and it has paint in all of the door wells. Not much overspray, either. Mine is white, it may be less expensive to paint the truck in white.
I never did get my pocket knife. I guess all of my visits with the Ford folk dissuaded them from thanking me with toys.
  • b_ran10b_ran10 Member Posts: 12
Hey rj, the flaps I was talking about were of the molded variety, not the flat ones. Are yours molded? If so there's a typo in the Ford catalog.
craig002, I was trying to describe the BOTTOM of the door itself. If you meant the door well as what goes around the door and what you might step on upon entering the vehicle, then mine has normal paint too. I mean the bottom of the door itself.
I enjoy this truck also and these are minor problems that the dealer will take care of. It's just a pain in the patoot to go back to the dealer. My wife's 2000 Accord has been bullet proof..zero problems. Have yet to take it back for any adjustments.
Well..off to see some fireworks...I think we'll sit in the truck bed and get some fresh air too! Happy 4th everyone!
  • rjkunklerjkunkle Member Posts: 74
The mudflaps I have are the molded ones. Yes the Ford Catalog is wrong. They are NOT white. I paid $20 for each of the front and rear set.
  • dolphins66dolphins66 Member Posts: 78
    rjkunkle:

Yes, we've had our ST with leather/moonroof since May 28th. Ours is also "loaded" but w/out 4X4, skid plates and engine block heater. Who needs that in the south? We already have a '95 Explorer 4X4 so we have no need for two.

First of all, if you really look a bit further you will notice that postings to this board have been well over 1000. They've had to close the board as they fill up and start a new one. And, no, I would have to disagree about the Nissans and Toyotas. The quality of their product doesn't even come close to the Ford. The Ford product on the whole is more solid and the parts for the interiors are much better made. You can feel the seats are stronger and heavier. The leather or cloth is better quality as well as the plastics that they use for parts inside. Horsepower is always a strong factor with Fords. They have more power. The interiors of the Nissan and Toyota are by far lacking in strength and quality. They need to beef up those interiors and make them stronger and more rigid. No rattles from Fords...they're just better built vehicles.

Of course that's just my opinion...but I'm right!

I'm jealous of everyone that got their ST and ordered it in early May. I've been waiting since February 19 and canceled the tonneau cover May 11, but I should have my ST by now. I think my order was put on the back burner or lost. My build date is the week of July 24 which really sucks. It should have been June some time or even earlier. For someone that has never owned a Ford product, this makes me very sour. I know this will change when I finally receive it. Maybe it's the Estate Green and leather seats that are a hold-up? Until then, I live vicariously through everyone that writes here and love reading the comments. I can't wait.

My dealer recommended that I not order the cargo cage when I ordered my ST. This was suppose to speed delivery. Now they want $315 for something I could have gotten for $166 to $195. Anyone know where I can get the same cargo cage for $200?
  • craig002craig002 Member Posts: 32
dolphins66 -- you are right! It is un American to even consider Nissan trucks, especially on the 4th of July.

Greenwade, you are getting a rotten deal. I would
cancel my order if I were you. I like my ST, but would not put up with the "stuff" you are dealing with.

Also, I checked my left rear door, and sure enough, it has not been painted. My first real complaint.
  • danny25danny25 Member Posts: 119
Actually the Sport Trac has nothing to do with the Mazda Tribute. You're thinking of the new "mini-ute" the Ford Escape. Those two suv's are the same except for the styling.
  • greenwadegreenwade Member Posts: 24
craig002 - I would have canceled a long time ago but I really want the truck bad. There is no other vehicle like this on the market today. Nissan has a four door but the back seat is too small for adults. I didn't want to take a chance on ordering from another dealer because there may be delays again. I thought about buying an ST on the lot but I can't find an Estate Green fully loaded. I bought my truck for $26,500 including TTL. Can't touch that with one on the lot. Guess I have to suffer and wait till August.

When does the Louisville plant start back up after the shut down?
  • fordsporttracfordsporttrac Member Posts: 300
Just for the record. You CAN remove the cargo cage with the tailgate closed and locked! Just press the release clips and push down. (Or pull up if you installed the cage upside down).

I was planning on adding two rubber feet on the bottom of the cage just below the clips to prevent the cage from being pushed down off the clips.

I have put a lock through the tie down for now.

    And for the Record;
The power steering shudder occurs in 2WD at "LOW" speed during a tight turn. It makes the ST feel like it will stall. It is NOT tire over/under inflation.

Had to Run out and check my Drivers Door. Yup sure enough very little/no paint on the bottom of the drivers door.

Time to reprogram the robot sprayers
