BTW, MY ST is White. Is it other colors or just white? What other colors have the missing paint?

I just checked my st and all four doors are fully painted on the under sides.
I have 6300/k and am still getting the shudder..have the 4x2! Its not the tire psi...on delivery mine were all low..had adjusted and still getting the shudder. Love the st and can think of no other vehicle I would rather be driving.
Thanks to all for the great info.
Has helped out a great deal.

Lets see if we can put a cut off date to this Paint thing and all the other problems. Everybody list the date of manufacturer of their ST. You can find the date on the very bottom right hand side of the sticker. The last 6 digits are the date it was made. List which problems you have and don't have.

    I Have
White ST Made (Not Purchased)on 02/15/00

Power Steering Shudder <-- Waiting for Svc Bltn.
    Sun Roof Leak <-- Fixed
Fuel Door Hits <-- Part On Order
    Missing Paint on Front Doors
Waiting for Tonneau <-- Got Letter

BTW, On the Tonneau letter, I brought my truck off the lot. I did not order it and I got the letter.

I noticed a lot of people ordering their ST........Just wondering where to order and why order? Why not go to dealer?

I have ...Red...Build date..03-24-00, I have shudder, fuel door is a-ok,missing paint on all doors, got letter and bought off the lot. I was off work today and went to a Ford dealer near by, not where I bought mine. I wanted to get a brochure on the ST since the dealer I bought mine from was out of them. I went in the showroom looking for a rack of brochures but nothing was out in the open. I started looking at the vehicles there thinking a salesperson would approach me but no one did, just like the last time. Well, there were 3 ST's there..2 white and a red. ALL were missing paint on all the doors. One of the white ST's had overspray which made it look as though it was painted but was very rough to the touch. The other two were silver..btw..not silver paint but unpainted metal. Two of the three had "sold" on them.
I still love drivin' this thing. My wife and I were watching the fireworks last night, sitting in the bed and a fellow parked behind me comes up and wants to look and ask questions. I need to start selling these things!
  • craig002craig002 Member Posts: 32
my build date was April 7th. The front right was oversprayed white, and then they forgot to do the right rear. I am not complaining about the shimmy or shake or whatever, I kinda like it. Makes the vehicle unique. I'll bet Mercedes does similiar things to their sport ute, to make them unique as well.

dberndt--haven't seen any replies with specific suggestions on window tint. I tinted the front windows with 3M black panther. Pretty good match--a little silver shows at certain angles and times of day. It's not perfect, but I'm happy with it. 3M offers lifetime warranty on cracking, adhesion, discoloration, etc--this is a good product. Have their high end on our Subaru and the home.

re: door paint--4 doors of overspray but no paint. Mine was built 4/6/00. I'm not conviced it's bare metal--feels smooth enough that there could be a clearcoat. I emailed Ford today and they repsonded that they had notified my local dealer--I should bring it in. Have to bring it in Monday to get the interior moonroof trim fixed (for 2nd time) anyhow--I'll let you know what happens.

re: leather--by far, the best money I spent on this truck. If you're considering buying, spend on the leather if you can afford it--my wife and I both think it's much, much more comfortable than the waterproof cloth. Just my $.02--free to you...
  • dberndtdberndt Member Posts: 45
denverdave: Thank you for the window tint suggestions! I will add it to my ST folder. I can't wait for my truck to get here.

Greenwade, you are schedule to receive yours before mine. We have the same, identical truck.

Still have not heard from anyone on this site about the Skid plates here. Are people just not interested or ordering their 4x4's with the skid plates? Someone that ordered theirs with skid plates after June 10 please speak up.

I salute the guy who was detailing his ST and noticed the 'no paint' door bottoms. This is just getting more and more interesting.
Everyone, please contribute if I miss something. I really hope Ford gets on here and goes,
"oh s#it" and starts fixes on these problems. I know it will be hard to pry that new puppy away from me once I get to start driving it.
I think the run down of the problems that need to be fixed are:

    1) Fuel door rubbing Paint
    2) Moonroof leaks
    3) Pulsate/shimmy(and whatever else people are
    calling it now)
    4) no edging on interior headliner
    5) little or no paint on door bottoms

The good thing is that most of this list is Fit and Trim items that don't affect the ability of the vehicle to drive. Let's all keep our hopes up that the only problems we will encounter are cosmetic!

Please get some pics on here ASAP on the aftermarket things you have done to your ST. I would like to see what that bed mat looks like and the mud flaps. You say they are black but the book says white right? What is with a 'lit' ford logo? Never heard of that. Please give us some good visual stimulation so that those of us still waiting can know what else to add to the truck once it comes home!
  • rletlowrletlow Member Posts: 3
I just checked my door paint and, you gueesed it. Front passenger door has no paint under door. All the other doors are fine. I am still having shimmy after 3000 miles. My fuel cap door is also rubbing. I will bring all of these up when I take it in for its first scheduled maintenance next week. Other tahn taht I still love my sport trac. I get asked about it just about everytime I stop somewhere.
  • bdenneybdenney Member Posts: 6
what's with the interior headliner? i have headliner on mine. I have noticed a few things such as: The steering wheel where the 4 prongs meet are met unevenly, I put a tank of gas in it today and when I stuck the pump in it squeaked the "composite" and the composite section moved slightly like it was inhaling and exhaling. Has anyone else noticed this? I get a bit of wind noise as well as engine noise, but that doesn't bother me a bit. I like the power of the engine. The truck rides very comfortably and the road noise is virtually nonexistent. Let me know if any of you have experienced the "breathing" and squeaking when you stuck the pump in. the back part definitely feels less sturdy than the front (steel vs. composite). By the way, has anyone seen crash test results?

I just picked up my ST today, White 4x2, every option except roof and heater. Gas cover rubs, No shimmy, Got paint on all my door bottoms, Got 2 thumbs up (what the???..) from separate commuters and quite a few head turns....in about 5 miles from the dealership to my house. I added after market tint to match the back windows before I picked it up and it looks great (llumar).
I have'nt driven too much yet but so far i'ma likin' it.

Thanks guys for all great posts.
Wondering if anybody took me seriosly about seeing a Taxi Sport Trac with the tonneau cover.
Well for the record I did. And was sober. I was at work! Anyway for ones who are waiting for their truck or ones who have ordered the cover I don't think you will be disapointed from what I saw. I think Ford's effort to make a cover that closes like a vehical door instead of a flimsy fiber glass cover is the reason for the delays. From what I saw you won't be disapointed.

re: greenwade, Im still waiting too. Im sitting on my sales slip with the price. Im not about to start all over paying for a Sport Trac with things I don't need. I'd rather wait it out. Fortunity I heard Ford is up grading the CD player as well as the center console to those who ordered the cloth comfort group. Well I was told mine would be ordered July 27th. Imagine I started all this in early march. Keep the faith bro.

    is June 2.
    Fixes that are needed:
    1. Bottom of the Front Doors need Paint
    2. Slow speed turning shudder
    3. The fuel door doesn't look like its rubbing, but it is very close
    4. Moonroof - It hasn't rain very much here in Atlanta since I picked up the ST, but it hasn't leaked when it has rained.
    5. I have noticed a small vibration at about 900 to 1000 RPMs. No clue yet to what this could be.
    6. Waiting for Tonneau cover ordered 7/5/00 with letter.

Has anyone else noticed a small vibration just about idling?

My black ST (made in FEB) has all four doors fully
    painted on the under sides.
I'm sick and tired reading all the sad post on ones that are waiting for their ST to come in. I just drove 400 miles round trip from GA to TN over the 4th and saw a least 20 ST's on dealer lots. I brought my truck off the lot back in March, because I wanted it now, I wanted to see what I was paying for, and got it loaded for alot less than had I order it. Why wait 6+ weeks when you can have it now. Your dealer can find one if he or she wants to. I got my ST after going to the 3rd dealer. Yes, it's work on my part, but I saved $2K and got what I wanted and drove it home within 2 hours. I now have 8000 miles and love it.

my gas milage is terrible. best i've gotten on mixed city and highway has been 15, and i've gotten as low as 12. speeds of 65 - 75 on the freeway and not kicking it in the city. speedometer is at about 1000 miles. has anyone else experienced the same problem?
  • fordnutfordnut Member Posts: 80
dberndt, I will be addressing these concerns with Ford before I order mine next month. My '94 Ranger cam in with the weather strip missing on the bottom of the passenger door. Seems like their quality at the Louisville plant is very inconsistent to say the least. I hope they can do better by the time I order mine. Keep up the informative posts!

My Deep Wedgewood Blue was built on Monday June 12. I have paint on all doors, slight power steering vibration when wheel is pulled tight after reversing--to turn. Cargo cage is always removable...gas tank rub.

The new problem...not seen posted....my drivers side--molding is loose. It's on the sport package, and it's the part right in front of the rear wheel.

All of these are minor--and quick fixes. I talked to the service dept. today...they called to see how things where and if I had any problems. He said the gas cap is on recall, that the whole thing will be replaced. The loose molding he said should be easy to fix--if not it was easily replaced. He just does the PR but said to mention the other stuff when I came in--even the cargo cage not locking and they would address all--and fix or replace. Tire inflation--he said the tires say what 40? 42? and the door says 34? He said to follow what's on the door and only to fully inflate if loading down. When I mentioned a couple of indents in the paint he said if they can't fix it they will either repaint or protect with the clearcoat. I'm very happy with my ST and Very satisfied with my Dealership. (Kimnach Ford, Norfolk, Virginia). I'm at 800 miles I've been getting 16-19 MPG. I hate to wait--but have decided to put all Ford Accessories on and will order when I go for the first oil change. I want to get a soft tonneau. There is a lot of talk about the hard....we like to go to Lowe's and buy wood. Plus I like the open bed look. But if I travel with the kids on a rainy day...No room inside. I also want all the ventsheilds, mud flaps, bug guard, bed mat. That's all. I LOVE MY ST!!!!!!!:)
  • fordnutfordnut Member Posts: 80
lasvegan, I took your info quite seriously. It sounds like they (FORD) were conducting a test under the worst case scenario, taxi use in Vegas!!
I wish Ford would publish what the cover will ultimately look like on the web or have included a picture in the letter it sent to its customers concerning the purchase of the tonneau.

Option Package #916-Pioneer 6 speaker/290watt peak/subwoofer same as offered in 2door sport. He said the extra 2 speaker are in each of the front doors, (possibly a panel speaker?). The subwoofer will go behind the drivers side rear seat. It will fit in the compartment. He said that I may be able to get the sub through local parts department/Visteon.

Standard radio will be cd/tape as in 2000 model vehicles. Ed said they wanted the cd/tape in the beginning but couldn't get them in time for production.

He said the "log jam" of wheel(sport package) hold ups should be cleared by the end of July. The 2-door sports will have the same wheels as the Sport Trac Again.

    Any questions?

I don't think you can call the ability to remove the Cargo Cage a defect. When that topic started it was simply stated that with a little more design thought it could have been secured with the tailgate.

    IMHO,
The tailgate was not intended to protect the cage.
  • greenwadegreenwade Member Posts: 24
You asked why most of us ordered and did not buy off of the lot? There is a considerable amount of difference in price if you order. On my truck, the difference in price is about $2,500 to $3,000 in the Houston area which includes TTL. I bought mine for $26,500 including TTL and on the lot they want $27,800 to $28,500 with no TTL. I'm willing to wait even though it's killing me. Large dealerships are alloted more sport tracs than the small one's. My dealer only gets two/month which sucks. Also, when they order the truck you may be placed on low priority, which is #44. High priority is 10 and they have priority 2 only for those who need their vehicle immediately (no chance in getting #2).

    Good luck.

Hello all. I was looking at my new plate registration for our ST. Well here in Michigan they class the ST as a station wagon????
  • mavzfanmavzfan Member Posts: 3
Where did you go to order the ST?
  • fordsporttracfordsporttrac Member Posts: 300
    mavzfan,
You order your ST from any Ford dealer. Its the same as buying off the lot except you get exactly what you want, color, options, ect. But you wait for it!

The dealer gets to keep the entire Hold Back so they make more money and that gives you better barganing power.

Thank you, that is what I am looking for.
I will have one before long.

At 1750 miles, my trans cooler started leaking. Its now out of service whilst they secure one from Motor City (Maybe I'm the first?)

    Mileage: 15 at best.

Soft Tonneau cover is very well made and convenient.

The rear coco mat does not fit. Its too long front to back so hooks won't align.

Lund now has the bug shield available. Got the clear and had it painted (Turdor Red). Must drill 4 holes to mount, sets a ways off of the hood, but looks great from the front.

The back window visor does not completely stop roof water from entering if window is fully down.

Was pleased to learn from above the mystery of the A/C compressor running on all but 3 settings. I couldn't figure it out.

    Any feedback?

    Thanks,

    Zderf

"The back window visor does not completely stop
roof water from entering if window is fully down."

Side ventshade don't stop water if window is all the way down. The only thing to stop water from coming in is to close the windows.

Well, I just got off the phone with Ford Customer NO SERVICE! I have not received the letter regarding the tonneau cover that was posted some time ago. SOOO, I called the phone number on the letter that dolphins66 was kind enough to retype on this board. Well, my name was not on the list to receive a letter, even though I have owned a ST since March 19th! He said that he could not add my name and transferred me to someone else. What did I get but voice mail! Well, I now have my dealership checking in on it, but don't believe they will come up with anything by what they said. Don't know where to go from here! Has anyone out there not received the letter and have gotten through to someone to track down why? Do you have a different number to try? My ST was obviously was built before June 5th if I was driving it around on March 19th. BTW I love this truck, and one of my doors is painted underneath and three are not! Go figure!

In response to post #149 dhalderman. You can get an aftermarket Extender that is distributed through Steelhorse and their Dealers/Distributors are all selling them for under $200. It's not the same exact cargo cage, but it does the trick.

My wife and I looked at the ST when we were going to buy a new vehicle but I decided to get the SuperCrew instead. I still like to read your posts and wanted to share with you the fact that paint, etc. problems are not limited to your ST's. My SuperCrew came with such a bad paint defect on the box that my dealer switched boxes from another Harvest Gold truck on the lot. The only problem was that the second box also had paint defects although not as bad as the first one. I also had to have the power steering pump replaced as it was highly over pressured. Blew the hoses right out of the brackets that they were in. The foam in the drivers seat has already started to break down and it feels like I am listing to the left when seated. I like my vehicle, but am sorely disappointed in the quality control at Ford. My dealer has been fantastic and has been bending over backwards to make me happy. Perhaps that's Ford's plan. Let the dealer fix the mistakes and be the ambassadors of good will. Enjoy your ST's.

Thanks Zack1000 for the part number for the Spare Lock! I will get right on it!

As far as NEW PROBLEMS, I have a unique and personal problem that I might leave as is. The word "EXPLORER" on the drivers side door is missing the first E - "XPLORER". The Service Manager and me, noticed it as it came off the truck and he said he is ordering me a replacement, but I don't know....by leaving it off fits my personality of being unique, which is why I love the ST so much, in fact I have ordered a personal plate that reads "UNEEK". What do you guys think? On or Off and should I remove the one on the passengers door???
    KEEP ON TRAC'N

    fordsporttrac---

I disagree with you. I believe Ford did intend that a locked tailgate would protect the cargo cage. I think it's clear from reading the owner's manual that Ford intended that the cargo cage be removed only when the tailgate is down. Plus they use phrases like, "Pull the round knobs on each side of the cage to unlock it" and "Press the locking clips".

They obviously didn't test it as thoroughly as we have---or if they saw the defect they didn't care if someone rips off a $200 cage. After all, they get over $300 per replacement.

I don't want to go into your "personal problem" :-), but, your "unique" problem with the misspelling of "Explorer" as "XPLORER" looks cool to me! I'd leave it as is and lose the "E" on the passenger side!

I'll have to take your word that YOU are unique, but, I KNOW the ST is, and it deserves this misspelled moniker.....Hmmmmm, that gives me an idea...

Thank You rb125 for the phone number! The phone number that was posted on the letter said that my name wasn't even there! My dealership called the same number and could not understand why I would not be eligible. He did tell me that the first 5000 letters would be sent out ramdomly starting June 15th. Maybe since we purchased ours so soon that we will be the last to get a letter. Let me know if you receive your letter! I am also in Atlanta, GA. HUM?!

fordsporttrac--You are getting to technical--some of what I listed are defects some are problems. I thank Zack1000 for his response. I don't want to pick over a word. I just don't want something stolen that I was led to believe was not removable when the tailgate is in the up position. Since it is removable then I want them to tell me what to do. If They tell me I can drill and attach a stopper or whatever--then they are going to sign something saying that my warranties have not been voided...and that is actually why I mentioned it to the dealer.

Tomboy1--I too would leave it--but go ahead and get the "explorer" to replace when you sell--so you can keep your "uneek"ness!!!LOL!!! I have ordered my plates to it's IH8W8TN maybe you should consider that one greenwade!!!!!!LOL!!!!!:)
  • greenwadegreenwade Member Posts: 24

I've had my Sport Trac for 4 months now and still love it alot.Still get all kinds of stares while driving and people still stop me in the parking lots to ask questions.
What I would like to know is how much the wraparound bug shield and the rear window deflector are priced .
    thanks

I have not purchased a Sporttrac yet, but have recieved a price quote over the internet at - www.newcardiscounters.com below invoice. This is the lowest I have found. The disadvantage is arranging delivery if you do not live on the East Coast. I received an email price quote back from them within 2 days.

I just talked to a Vivian Palmer in Ford Marketing. Job one end July 12 and Job 2 starts up on July 24. Any Cloth comfort group built up to 7/12 will have the low series console. After july 24 the low console will only come if you don't opt for the cloth comfort of the leather comfort group. REPEAT: The high console will come with all cloth and leather comfort packages on ST's built after 7/24 Job #2 start. I cannot say if there is a price change, I forgot to ask. If there is one it should be minimal.

Sorry about the technical angle but once something is said too many people get the wrong idea.

I read the owners manual pages 65 & 66 on the cargo cage. I do not see anything to indicate the cage is secured by the tailgate. On page 64 it specifically refers to the tailgate lock for the purpose of theft prevention of the tailgate. No mention is made of the cage.

I have the cage. I read the owners manual, the brochure, and the cage install instructions. No where does it say or even hint at the cage being protected by the tailgate.

I started this cage discussion back in the first ST topic. It started because I noticed the installation instructions for the cage were backwards. At that time I made the suggestion about the tailgate protecting the cage "IF" ford had just put some more thought into it. This whole thing has been turned around into its a ford problem. Its not a ford issue its an idea I presented to the list.

Whom ever lead you to believe the cage was protected by the tailgate is who you need to address. But its not Ford.
