Checked tires for the hell of it yesterday for wear. Seems the front are wearing slightly more than the rear. Not to noticable. How is this????? I light up the back wheels alot and many times not on purpose. It just seemed kinda wierd the front would be a little more worn than the rear.
Nah air pressure is alright been checking it. ALignment??? Im doubting that because both front tires seem to be wearing exactly the same. If the alignment was bad wouldnt one tire be wearing more than the other???
Post your fax # and I'll send your beer over right now! Ryan, you'll need to show some ID, I don't need more legal trouble! BTW, Ryan, that is why you are supposed to rotate your tires. Has anyone had any luck getting Firestone or GM to exchange their 16 inch Wilderness ATs? I'm starting to wonder if it is only a Ford problem because of their low air pressure recommendation to counteract roll over tendencies. But I never cared for Firestone, would much prefer to have had Goodyear or Michelin. Come to think of it Ford and Firestone both start with an "f" and the other two are "GM". Aw... who gives a ... Steve
Is it an even wear across the whole tire? Strange, since I have over 24k on mine, 2 rotations, and they still look relatively new. (that includes occasional heavy hauling). The rear ones definitely wear quicker than the front ones though, before I do my rotations. I keep mine at 40 psi.
BTW, regarding tires, I did a dumb thing and went over to that Tahoe/Yukon topic to check if anyone was complaining about tires over there and, GEE WHAT A SURPRISE, the sky is falling again. LOL
I keep mine at 35-36 which the sticker on the door says. 40 psi??? Damn you have a Z71 right?
Yea i started a controversy on the tahoe topic again about tires. Have you heard of a tahoe or burb being in an accident due to firestone tires? NO! mass panic thats all it is. I mean with tires being bad i see why you could be concerned but its a little overboard
The fronts will wear more because there is more weight on them and they do the turning (i.e.: more work). Traditionally, the outside of the front tires will tend to wear more quickly; how fast you go around corners can have a definite effect on this wear. Goodyear makes a light truck tire that has a harder compound on the outside of the tread to even out wear, but still provide good traction. Personally, I am very impressed (so far) with the BFG Long Trail TA's on my GMC. We had a pretty good ice/snow storm last winter, and I actually had to try to break them loose! I would recommend them to anybody! xring... I would not ever buy anything from Bob Howard CHEVROLET. I bought my truck from Bob Howard Pontiac/GMC. Believe it or not, there is a significant difference (or maybe I just got lucky). The salesman (Kyle Adcock) I bought my truck from was low-key, knowledgable, and generally easy to work with. I would recommend him. However, he has been promoted to web site managing salesman, so now he can sell anything that Bob Howard (Group 1) can sell (which is just about any brand out there). Their service department at Pontiac/GMC has been reasonably good; not great. They have tried very hard to fix the truck; but it is defective, and they acknowledged this to me last visit. We'll see if they maintain this story at the arbitration hearing.
Thanks yea i do take turns quick. Also its not the whole tire thats wearing it is the outsides sorry i didnt clarify that earlier.
White what size BFG's do you have??? ALso do they make them in WOL. One last question how much each were they? I was thinking of going to either BFG's or michelin when i change mine.
i called firestone after the initial recall. their "line" is, only the 235's in the atx, atx ii, and wilderness tires are on recall. also, if you can believe it, gm claims that the 265's that come standard on the z71's are "made to a higher standard" than, say, ford's. also, supposively, gm tests the tires various manufacturers send more rigorously. truth? hard to believe, but i s'pose anything's possible. all i told the guy at the firestone dealership was, if my tires fail and i wreck my truck, i'm calling my insurance company first, and finding him second...
I find it interesting that all of the problems that have been found with these firestones are on Ford Explorers. Ford recomends that they be under inflated by 10 pounds so that the Explorer does not roll over. This however can cause a tire to heat up considerably. Also the recall seems to be more important in the southern US where outside temperatures are much higher.
My fronts don't seem to wear much at all, the rears do a little, but for 3 probable causes: 1) Towing a boat every weekend 2) Hauling pallets of landscaping type stuff occasionally 3) What else, Jackrabbit starts...
What ever happend to all those pictures of owners silverados on that web site,USTFA? Also, why cant you get a fuel tank skid plate as part of the skid plate package? Is there one in the after market? Thanks in advance! Shawn
After reading post 770, I got my owners manual, and looked up scheduled maintance. Nowhere did I see anything about CHANGING the rear end oil. It says not to tow the first 500 mi of the truck. It also says to check the oil level of the rear end every 7500 mi, and add as nessisary. I have a 2k LT 2WD w/locker. Where did it say to change the oil? I aggree, it probably should be changed at 7500mi, but I just can't find it anywhere.
It was many years ago when I got into the GM Desert Proving Grounds outside Mesa AZ, and at that time they were running tire test. They had what looked like a Nascar type car with 3 Racing Goodyears on it and then they had 1 street type tire and they would drive it until it came apart. It looked strange and sometimes they went on and on and other times they would not last any time at all. It was great to see some of the GM cars and trucks before they were introduced. Also throw in my 99 Ext. cab 2500 rides better than the wifes Exploder, both are 2wd. When I first got the 99 she did not want anything to do with it now every time we go some where she hopes that we are taking my truck.
My truck will earn its keep. Im going to be putting up a wood fence (first digging holes fun). Gonna be hauling alot of cement, posts, fence panels and plywood for another project this coming weekend. I am really dreading putting 6 ft X 8 ft fence panels in my truck cause they will hang out. I tried to get a trailer from my cousin but it is in storage with his snow mobile oh well ill have to make due. Ill let you all know how the truck handled it tomorrow
you have bed rail caps and a spray in...what's the fear?
I had to get a load of 50/50 topsoil today...don't need it 'till tomorrow...but this little hick town is shut down on Sundays!.....spent the entire day boarding the bathroom in the garage..tomorrow it's gonna be floor and toilet!.....just in time for labor day...
..what was this about?....oh yeah...Ryan's scared to use the truck..
Have you replaced the cab air filter yet? Part no. is 52485513. Just wondering cause recommended replacement is 15k miles. This is on the intake to the a/c. Filters the air before it gets to the evaporator coils...you know, the one under the middle part of the dash. Just curious...more lazy. Figured if someone else has done it, would be easier then trying to find it in the shop manual. If you haven't, just post here and I'll go and look it up.
Well,I'm glad to see someone else had the stupid ticking noise inside the dash. I don't know why or how,but the day after I set up the appt to have the oil changed and the interior light problem(and the geiger counter)fixed,I got out of the truck, and the lights came on!ONCE!Then,on Friday night, they came on,and are working fine now, every time.I'm still going to keep the appt,I'll tell them about the problems:
1.Ticking in dash(they won't find anything!) 2.Urrrkkk noise in back(they won't find anything) 3.Transmission thing when it just sits there(do I have to say it?) 4.Leak in rear drivers window.(they will have to order the part I bet!)
At least they have the right filter, and Mobil One to do the oil change with. The way my lucks been lately, the truck won't be ready by closing time. The last time they let me have a Pontiac TransPort,an old dustbuster one. What a horrible van.My friend got a 99 T/A for a loaner when his tranny was leaking on his 98 Sierra. Why not me??
'98 Sierra. Gee, if I didn't know better, sounds like you're describing a Kia or Hyundai. That transmission thing is kinda spooky. If you're about to get carjacked and tried to run away but your trans says no...well I guess the carjacker won't go very far either.
I am not trying to be a wise guy...far from it. If you are not happy with your vehicle, it is YOUR responsibility to communicate this to your dealer. This is also true if you are not happy with their service. While the problems you have listed appear to be more of an annoyance rather than a safety issue, except for the trans, you should expect it from a vehicle that is made in the USA by union workers....as the other 80 million drives have. Have a great Sunday!! BTW, if the urrrkkk noise in the back is actually in the back of the cab, most likely, its the plastic insulators (2) that hold the rear seat up. If its on the exterior of the truck, could be the cab mounts or the rear leaf springs. Hey, that's the least I could offer right? Sure beats pounding on the dashboard as others would suggest....LOL
haven't pulled my cab air filter yet. yeah, it's on the checklist to be replaced next oil change. i've messed with finding it already...doesn't appear to be too difficult to get at. if i remember right, the worst you have to do is pull one or two 8-10 mm bolts. can't remember off-hand. next time i bring the digital camera home, i'll pull it and take pics...
what's really the bummer about the whole thing is that you need power to eject the caddy that holds all the cds. I was in such a rush to pull it, I left my favorite "Best of the Lettermen" in there. And now its lost. Who knows it may show up the same time that GM dealers have 4500s on the lot...LOL
And Tim...no comments on the "Best of the Lettermen" CD...Thank God I still have my Bobby Vinton "Polish Polka" cd....LMAO!
oby, air filter instrux are in the owner's manual on pages 6-18 and 6-19. in the event that's in your truck too:
1. if your vehicle is equipped with a panel under then center of the instrument panel, remove the bolts on it to remove the panel. 2. reach under the instrument panel towards the front of the vehicle and pull downward on the filter retaining bracket. 3. remove the air filter by pulling downward on the element. remove the second portion of the air filter by sliding it towards the rear of the vehicle and then pulling downward. 4. install the new filter by reversing the steps listed above.
On the final stretch of our cruise. Today we were in port, Amsterdam. Everything is legal, but looking into the eyes of the dopers, stoners, prostitutes and addicts, I see a whole generation of despair. The appeal of liberalization is lost. Still, it solves for them the problem of a war on drugs. Perhaps needles are preferable to guns and bullets, but the price is trash floating in the canal, men urinating on the street, and cafes full of people in a stupor. My wife nearly provoked a small riot when she tried photographing a prostitute in a windows. Don't do it!
On Wednesday, we're going to get about six hours in Paris. Then we begin our trek back home. I honestly can't wait. I've frankly seen enough priceless works of art, been to every palace, city hall, museum and church. I'm tired of being herded onto buses, and can't wait to sit behind the wheel of my CHEVY SILVERADO,...WooHoo....THE TRUCK!
I've heard on the news to expect a shock from rising gasoline prices....
No pickup trucks in Europe, but there is hope. Saw on the docks, a Mitsubishi truck like the Nissan Frontier or Ford Sportrac...4 full size doors, short cargo bed, two tone paint.
passenger air filter is a no brainer to replace. don't even have to be a contortionist to get it out and in. took mine apart just to make sure it was there and yep, it's there allright. hope K&N comes out with a replacement soon. the AC should really wail then. he he
Lewis, Sorry for taking so long to respond to your question, but I have been quite busy and as a result I am behind on reading these postings. I ordered the the ZX3 ride control on my 00. I think it would be money well spent if you will be doing a considerable amount of hauling heavy loads or pulling a trailer. Otherwise it serves no purpose. I feel it only improves the ride when the truck has a load on it and you activate it. Your decision should be based on how much you will be using the truck for hauling and/or towing. Bob
Removing the plastic cover can be a pain. Mine is an LT with center console. The cover is held on with 3 bolts (they are 7MM) two are easy to remove. One is a problem. It is positioned right above the center transmission hump, the bolt is recessed about 1 inch. Too deep to reach it with a 1/4 inch drive ratchet and normal socket (a deep socket would be perfect but I don't have one this small), a 2 inch extension bar between the ratchet and socket was too long, impossible to get at with a normal wrench, not enough clearance between the floor and the bolt head to get a nut driver on it. My solution - I used a 3/8 inch ratchet with a 3/8 to 1/4 reducer - then of course the 7mm socket. The little extra lenght of the reducer allowed me to reach it. This one bolt took me longer to get off and back on then the whole rest of the job.
I did not see this on the instructions, but I also had to remove one additional bolt on the cover that holds the filter in place. The filter was dirty and had a little mold on it. Now that I know what tools to use, the next time it will be easy. I may just but a 7mm deep socket. You can never have enough tools!!
I hauled it all. First trip was about 1100 lbs of materials (cement, plywood, posts, some 1 by's). Truck never sagged. it did level out though with all the weight in the back. After it was all unloaded the back end went back to the way it looked prior. SO far thats the most i hauled it had great acceleration. Only thing i noticed was the braking distance but thats to be expected with more weight in the rear.
I also put the fence panels in the back. They fit perfect hung em off the side kinda a half V.
I am worn out now dug so many damn posts and mixed so much concrete whew pass me a cold one thanks.
Oh yea one other thing what color are your guys oil filter??? I Found mine today i did some under the truck investigating since i had it parked in my front yard. Its blue kinda on the side drivers side middle. Well i think ill be doing my next oil change after labor day better go find a PF59 soon. Also gas milage is slowly increasing almost up to 15mpg now.
Ryan, the PF59 is blue but the upgrade UPF59 filter is black and has a slightly larger diameter. Now I need to find a tool to fit. Does anyone hate those plastic oil filter "socket" type tools? I put one on my PF59 and the filter didn't turn but the ratchet did. The plastic just gives and the ratchet shaft turns inside the square opening. Plastic tools = crap. I'm going to order a metal one from Kragen.
