there. I got a question regarding thermostats. Correct me if I'm wrong on the following:

-The difference between a 160 and a 180 stat is that the 160 opens earlier than the 180 based on the temperature of the coolant

-The only time a thermostat will CLOSE is when the temperature drops below the corresponding rating temperature

-The 160 or 180 stat will make no difference in towing or hauling temperature as both will be fully open when truck reaches operating temperature.

-The thermostat DOES NOT close during operation to contain the coolant in the radiator for cooling.

The reason I ask is that a person in another forum is telling me that with the 160 and towing, he ran at 230. He switched to the 180 and his towing temp is at 215. His theory is that during its "cooling cycle" it opens too early not giving the radiator enough time to cool the coolant. BTW, I asked him if he was joking...he was not....

It is common courtesy to "hide" the pictures as some with slow connections will wait forever for the page to load. This way, it gives them the option of looking at the pictures or not. Personally, I don't mind as I have a cable connection...just thinking of others...isn't that right? Ryan, your opinion....

running the 160 stat with the HPIII. Only problem with that is the 93 octane at $2.09/gal. Last fillup was over $50

Ryan, I noticed from your pics that your truck sits level. I also read the post where you didn't adjust the front height with the torsion bar....so that leads me to believe....that your rear springs are shot. Better go to the dealer and have it checked out. No truck sits level unless it was modified to do so. Cause with any kind of load, your headlights would be pointing up at the sky.....

Every time I turn on the recirculating air the air cond. turns on. Does everyone's do this!
I understand why it turns on, to keep the windows from fogging up, but I usually only turn it on when there is a smoking vehicle in front of me, so it only stays on for a couple of minutes. Now I have to turn up the heater to compensate for the air cond. If I just turn off the fan does air still flow? Any ideas?

Ryan: Those mud flaps you got, are they from Husky?
Were they built for the fender flares?
How well do they keep the dirt off the doors and rear fenders?
How much were they and where did you get them? Thanks.

I got a set of floormats for my truck, front and rear. Unlike Husky or Catchall they are designed to channel debris out the door instead of just catching it for you to mop up. They come in any color you want, as long as the color you want is black, (that's the only negative).

Second fuel mileage check, 12.66, almost all city. 2001 2500 Ext. 6.0 auto 3.73. I live in Calif. with oxygenated fuel. When a friend drove to Utah this summer he noticed his fuel mileage went up 1-2 MPG out of Calif. The only thing he could attribute it to was the fuel.
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Yes they are built for the flares. Yes they are husky

$26.95 a pair. They work great. Keep lots of stuff off the doors and rear panels

I got em at a local parts place. Call husky up and they can give you the location of the nearest place

DEAN- my rear end sits up a bit higher than the front. Its the way my driveway is sloped. If i back it in my rear end is way up in the air if i pull in nose first it looks level and on the street which is a level surface it sits right. Springs are fine

Ill take a few pics of it tomorrow in the street for you

I'm not sure where the pics were taken I got them from http://www.hdsilverado.com/ It has a whole bunch of info. A lot of it is stuff we already know. you need a dealer code to get in. It should be on the bottom of your window sticker.

$26.95 a pair!! Sign me up. I've been to 2 places so far and they both wanted $39.95/pair here in Calif.
Is there a web site I could order from?
  • blackmax200blackmax200 Member Posts: 255
Dean...I think that the guy porbably had an air pocket that affected the flow that caused the temp to run hotter with the colder thermostat in it. Your assumptions I believe are correct.

as the quarter windows are in for replacement. Got a '00 Jeep Cherokee Laredo to use for a couple of days. Put about 50 miles on it. Lots of power...rides like [non-permissible content removed]. So what else is new?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
Its just a local place they dont have a website or anything sorry. Call husky up. You can order direct from them they are $29,95 from them. They are great people. They were the only flaps i could find that went with the factory flares. Easy to install too but the rear wheels need to be removed.

My AC comes on with the ReCirc button also. Vince4 found a comment in the 2000 service manual that states the AC always comes on with ReCirc.

The worst part is the AC light doesn't come on, and I'm getting cold before I realize what's going on.

My 99 doesn't do it, Vince's early 2000 doesn't do it, by my 2000 does.

Heard stories of automatic transmission acting locked up. Had this happen once in 15K miles a few weeks ago. It seemed like the brakes were on even though it was in drive, no emergency brake and no brakes on. Pressed accel pedal and engine rev'd like it had a load and wouldn't move. Then all of the sudden it jerked and released and accelerated normal. I know that the transmission is fully programmable. Any suggestions?

I have had (5) five different trucks and they were a 89 reg cab,95 ext cab,96 ext cab 3dr,99 tahoe and 00 ext cab with that visor on and the only one that vibrated is the one I have now (2000 2500 LT ext cab 4dr) and the only one I did not install myself.
So I got to looking at it,and Radco (a truck accessory place around where I live)who installed it did not fully tighten the center bolts.
I bought the truck in march and I have yet to have a problem with it (must be that 2500 thing, what do you all think?
I would like to post some pics some day of my truck but I dont know what the best route to take. I have a cheapo digital camera and a scanner witch is the easiest way for a computer dumb person to do it?

Rocker arms sound noisy since about 750 miles. Truck now has 15K miles. Dealership says noisy fuel rails. I know that roller rockers can be noisy but it only has 15K miles. I also overheard one of the service techs at the dealership say they found a roller tip in the oil pan of another 5.3L. Does noisy fuel rails sound applicable?

here in south carolina, it actually got chilly enough to leave a thin coat of ice on my windshield this morning. no problems with starting or anything. used the windshield washer fluid to "rinse" the ice off. no problem. i've not noticed any problems or hesitation of the truck to run in cold weather. oh, cold for this truck has been between 20 and 30 degrees.

To unlock the passenger door, you have to press "Unlock" 2 X's. Asked dealer if able to change to be able to press 1 time only to open both doors. They said no can do. Is there a way to program for 1 press to open both doors, as timing the 2 press is difficult because if the second press is too soon or late, you have to start over?
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I too have had the "trans lock up" about 3 times so far in 8100 mls. Hasnt done it since like 5,000 mls though.

Also nope cant program the door locks to all open at once.

BCO- my truck starts up fine in the cold weather. Mine was a thick sheet of ice had to scrap and use the washer fluid. I still cant beleive my windows were frozen shut never had that happen. Today is going to be the warmest day of the wk and its not ognna be above 35-40 degrees plus the damn windchill

They took your tires right? If they don't send you the money, i guess i would call that stealing. My thought is if the dealer took the tires and said you would get "x"dollars for them that it is a done deal. You have paper work stating what they would give you for them and that they took the tires right? sounds good to me, now i need to find a dealer that will do that for me too, i hate these tires!

I've been calling a couple different local dealers to get a quote of how much over invoice they will order/sell me a z71 LT ext. 1500. The following has a web special for $49 over delivery invoice for any chev (except vette and HD's) through the end of this month.

Anybody heard of similar specials and hidden surprises?

I would appreciate an answer from anyone who has the center console with the bucket seats.....
Does the console have dividers or slots or anything to hold CD's or cassettes? I drove a couple Silverados a couple of weeks ago and that is one of the little details I don't remember noticing. They were 2wd extended cabs and I was really driving careful to try and check for the shakes.

    Thanks!

in answer to your cd/cassette slot question: no. not standard. however, through the gm accessories catalog (and a million aftermarket accessories companies, i'm sure) you CAN buy an insert designed specifically to go into the center console to hold such things. it should be noted though, that you do get a decent bit of cd/et al storage standard. there's a little flip-up door just in front of the cup-holders that holds about 4 cd's, as well as the overhead console which has a drop-down door that will hold exactly 3 cd's, i believe.

I have a leather cd wallet (big tall one. Hold 2 cds on a page top and bottom. 48 disc i think fits perfect in the center compartment.

Personally, I prefer the CD holders that strap to the sun visor; no cases to fiddle with, and your eyes stay more-or-less pointed toward the road.

I am about 2 and a half hrs from indy. I am alot closer to chicago than indy.

Have you ever been on the indianapolis 500 racetrack??? Took a bus tour on it. Damn bus went 80-90 mph too. It was pretty cool

You thinking of coming to indiana???

Has anybody had their rear windows replaced, I heard there is a TSB on it? Mine are terrible. I am just wondering if the replacement fixed the problem. I believe the new window has a metal frame or hinges instead of plastic?

BTW. I had a bug deflector on my truck all summer, windsheild noise was terrible on the highway, so bad that I didn't know the rear windows were as bad as they are. I took it off for the winter a few weeks ago and the windsheild noise went away, damn dealer was right. I wonder if they are going to blame the rear window noise on my nerf bars!
  • obyoneobyone Member Posts: 7,841
Mine's in the shop this very instant having the windows changed for the fourth time. The TSB is the same as before except you add an "A" after the number as it's an update to the original addressing the airleak.

    ryan,

no, wasn't planning on visiting Indiana, just trying to remember how it was when I was there. During that period, just for the hell of it, we use to fly to the NHRA races and try to get in some football or basketball games at the same time. After awhile, all that flying got to be a drag so we settled for Pomona and just got drunk every night in Marina Del Rey....I remember the hardest place to get drunk was in Texas. Every county had it's own drinking law, got so confusing that we ended up drinking in the hotel we were staying at rather than try and figure it out...LOL!!

OK, back to trucks...does anyone's brakes literally skreech when slowly braking down a driveway or hill. Mine's just started doing it. And it only happens when the brakes are cold as in the beginning of the day. Test drove with tech and for the life of me couldn't duplicate it. The skreech is way loud too....
  • ryanbabryanbab Member Posts: 7,240
I get a screech in my brakes after i wash my truck. Thats the only time it happens. After i apply the brake abour 3-5 times (after it warms up) it stops.

    Ryan
  • mpalombompalombo Member Posts: 186
Mine screech too after washing my truck. Same as Ryans.
