I was told that Hyundai is going to offer .09% financing on the XG because of sluggish sales. It is a nice car but it think that the market has not found it yet.

    Hi viperu.

Things are a bit tough in this area but it also depends on what options you want or need.
I'm in the Cape Canaveral area and had no trouble at all finding the LX my wife wanted. As to paying invoice I don't think that's going happen here.
MSRP is about as good as it gets and to do that I would probably say you would have to go to Mouse Town to do it. Bob Dance Hyudai would be about the only dealer there that will sell for MSRP.
I walked out with the FWD LX for $200.00 over and that's with tax / title transfer fees included. Not really a bad deal for the value you get in return. ( That was in Cooca by the way.)

If the wife ever parks the bloody thing I'll install the dash kit I have sitting in my shop.

Where did you end up going anyway? Not the dealer, just the area? Curious is all don't answer if you don't want to.

Hello all! I just changed the oil in my SF and, as someone else mentioned, I can't believe how easy it was to reach the oil filter and drain plug! I could probably change the oil without jacking the truck up. Anyway, AC Delco and Fram both have filters that fit the SF. I went to Walmart and they had a sell on the AC Delco oil filters for the SF, so I picked up a couple. I also put full synthetic in and can definitely tell the difference. The engine seems to run smoother, or maybe it's just me . . .

I was curious blkstar what were the part numbers for the oil filters you mention in your post above?

I'm into my fourth week of waiting for my black GLS w/ABS, it's driving me crazy. We just had a bad (surprise) 10 inches of snow in the Philly area and there I was without my SF!

I thank those of you who answered my questions on the Climate Control, Digital Multimeter, and sunroof. I do have some more questions and hope you can answer them all so I can be another step closer to becoming a Santa Fe owner.

    1. Has anyone installed the Climate Control system off hdkautosport.com? If so, does it work good? And what becomes of the old knobs?
    2. If I were to buy the wood dash trim for the Santa Fe, but wanted to install the climate control, how would I get a wood piece to fit the climate control instead of the standard knobs?
    3. Does anyone know what, exactly, the digital multimeter does? Is that available at hdkautosport.com??
    4. Last one... why didn't the U.S. versions come with the climate control and digital multimeter on them?

Thanks again in advance. I've done so much research on SUV's (Pathfinder, Highlander, 4Runner, CRV, RAV4, etc.) and I'm really impressed with the Santa Fe. It really stacks up with those models and the price is very hard to beat.

Can anyone help? I am debating whether to but a SantaFe w/ 4x4 or Front Wheel Drive. What complicated matters is the options of Limited Slip Differential and Traction Control. How does each of these work? Would FWD with Traction control be about as good as 4x4 in snow? Where does LSD come in? Is it avail on both FWD and 4X4? I'm thinking 4X4 only. HELP! Also has anyone have stats on gas mileage after 3000 mile breakin period?
  • drew_drew_ Member Posts: 3,382
AWD gives you double the amount of traction because of the extra two drive wheels. Traction control with FWD is exactly as the name applies. It only makes use (or controls) the amount of traction that the two drive wheels have to offer. Obviously the former will be better than just FWD.

As for the limited slip differential, let's just say that it helps your vehicle to keep moving if only one of the rear wheels has traction. Without the LSD, your vehicle could get stuck if one of the rear wheels does not have traction. You may be interested in Townhall's 4WD systems vs AWD systems discussion topic. FYI, the Sante Fe has full-time AWD.

rekrucr: I have a SF GLS FWD ABS/TCS and 2950 miles We live in Kansas and have had our share of snow, ice and rain in the last month. I have had no problems in any of them. Concerning the gas mileage: I have been keeping track and I am getting between 18 and 22 mpg.

Like many of you here, we had to travel out of our area to get our SF. The dealer we worked with added their usual dealer ad decal right beneath (no space) the Hyundai Name on the back. I think it looks really tacky and I'm wondering if any of you have ever removed one of these things? If so, how did you do it w/out ruining the paint?

I don't know what's been more fun: driving my SF or talking about it w/ you all. OK, driving is a little more fun. We are comming up on 3000 miles and I can't believe it's only been a month. My husband has only put on about 20 of those miles because I won't give it up. Funny, he never wanted to drive any of my new cars! However, this is the first purchase I made pretty much on my own and all of his friends who laughed in the begining at owning a Hyundai - aren't laughing much anymore. Chalk one up for this mom.

I have just recently received my accessories and parts from www.hdkautosport.com. So far I have only been able successfully install the side step. It really make the car stand out good. I am still waiting for the wires and instruction to install the A/T climate & Digital Multimeter. I am also in the process ordering the A/V Stereo System with the 8 discs cd changer. Once I finished install everything I will post it within my website. www.y2kcatalogs.com/santafe. This is not available yet but will be in a few weeks. Thank you. Good luck to all the owners of Santa Fe.
  • janes5janes5 Member Posts: 6
Ok, i think i can help you out. Wait until temp goes up(very hot day in summer). If it isnt attached by glue, you can VERY slowly take it off, working your way from corner of the decal. You have to be very careful though and MAKE SURE the surface of the car is very hot under the sun. I thought my car's(99' grand am) decal was glued on but found out it wasnt. The tape they used to stick it was amazingly strong one, however. No residue was left; it came off clean as a whistle. Good luck.

I am getting ready to lease a Santa Fe, given Hyundai`s less than great resale value, how does this play into a lease agreement? Does Hyundai show the actual residual value of the vehicle based on real world prices or do they "doctor" that figure up?
  • mtnrunner1mtnrunner1 Member Posts: 18
Basically, when we lease, we are simply financing the depreciation of the vehicle for the length of our lease. Therefore,if a vehicle does not retain its value (= has a low book value), then the cost of leasing this vehicle will be higher than one that retains more value.

Being that the Santa Fe is new, we do not truely know how they are going to retain their value. For instance, if you go to Kelly Blue Book (www.kbb.com), they are not able to provide any book values for the Santa Fe yet.

The financial institutions that are providing the lease agreement for the Santa Fe has to make an intelligent prediction on how the resale value is going to hold up at this point to determine your lease cost.

You other option - purchase rather than lease. Compare your costs.

    Thanks,
    Mike

If anyone hear a weird noise inside the car please check the following items:
    1. The seat belt in the rear seats.
    2. The plastic hooks for the cargo net under the rear seats, fold the rear seats to see it. Inside and under.
    3. The Jack in the rear trunk right behind the rear seats. Hide under the carpet cargo liner.
    4. First Aide Kit

Last time I was just adjust the rear seat belts. Yesterday I went to adjust the Hooks for the cargo net under the rear seats. No more noise for my car at all.

    wbdave,

The following is from post #751. For the Fram #, you can check their catalog in the store. I got my AC/Delco oil filters from Walmart.

    ***
I called AC/Delco and they told me that the 2001 Santa Fe 4 cyclinders and 6 cyclinders both use their part number PF-1127. I changed oil last night and the works fine. I thought my Chevy Astro Van had the easiest oil filter to change until I look at the Santa Fe. It is a piece of cake. Also, the oil pan bolt is a 17mm if anyone care. I was however, disappointed with the sharp edges on the oil filter mounting bracket and the nozzle that the oil filter screw on. They could have done a better job there.
  • mrtwix500mrtwix500 Member Posts: 18
I just bought 2 Hyundai oil filters from the local dealer for $4.74/ea. I have also decided on Castrol 10W-30 motor oil as the synthetics (while nice) can be super expensive (over $4/qt)... Add up a car's lifetime synthetic oil changes and you have some serious money tied up in oil changes... After researching on the net and talking to others, I have determined that the Castrol oil is the best regular motor oil...

The service manager told me it would be a good idea to use Hyundai filters to avoid any future warranty issues relating to other filters that may (or may not) cause damage.

I do realize he most likely said that to make a sale (and he did) but for a buck or two more, I have the original filter in my Santa Fe and that cannot be called into question by anyone.

Furthermore, the nice thing about Hyundai oil filters is that one size fits all... There is only one size (type) filter for all Hyundai model cars and trucks (SUVs)... Makes it nice when you go to buy one!

I contacted Fram, and they advise their oil filter for the 2.7L V-6 is Fram # PH6607.

    Purolator Oil Filter # L14459

What happened to the T-H-C site? It's gone again, as of yesterday. It had been going great guns the last few weeks.
  • thor9thor9 Member Posts: 26
I noticed when I did my first oil change on my LX AWD, that the metal clips that retain the screws for the oil filter access door through the splash shield, were not attached to the lip of the shield, and would fall off when the screws were removed.

These clips do not have teeth to crimp down, so I super-glued them to the splash shield, after lining up the screw holes.

    Works well.

Now if I can find a way to keep oil from accumulating in the splash pan and dripping out later. Very little clearance to force a rag in between there to mop it up.

I am considering the Santa Fe as well as the new Toyota Highlander.
My wife's main concern is the safety of the Santa Fe. I checked the Insurance Inst. web site and they had no crash test info yet. Any
info that would help convince my wife would be appreciated. Also
any advice on the Santa Fe be as the Highlander.

The wood dash kits from wooddash.com and exociticwood dash.com, have a missing piece. There is a 1 1/2 inch vertical by 9 1/2 inch horizontal space between pieces #5 and #s 6 and 7
the space between the air vents and the emergency buttons is missing in the design. I sent an email to wooddash.com where I bought my kit and ask them to supply the missing part. Please all of you who bought the kits send an email asking them to supply the missing piece. At a cost of $200 a kit they made huge profits and can afford to supply the missing piece fro free.

Please email them , the more who email the more likley we are to get the pieces free.

did anyone see the car and driver small suv comaprison? it called the crv an ergonomic nightmare but yet they rated it above the santa fe. first place was a tie-the escape and tribute. i guess they don't take into account all the recalls and cheapness of the interior. santa fe should've been in first place but then again that would've make ford look bad. as if they need help looking bad. fords always have and always been ugly-except the new lincoln ls that is. but again, the santa fe is superior for the price-just ask my mother who has always owned fords and test drove both the escape and santa fe and she wants the santa fe!

Hi All- Could someone plz check their manuals and tell me if the fog lamps on the Santa Fe are owner replaceable? Currently looking to get a car for my dog (Bernese Mt Dog) because the little Merc Mystique is a tad "tight." Went to replace a fog-lamp on it and was quoted $300+ for the job since the bumper had to be dropped etc.

In my once over between the Escape/Tribute/Santa Fe I am leaning heavily to the SF-but if it is not "user friendly" I'll pass.....Tim
  • bluedevilsbluedevils Member Posts: 2,554
Last night I read the current issue of Consumer Reports. The Santa Fe, Escape (V6), Tribute, and new RAV4 were compared/evaluated. CR liked all 4 of them. I was surprised to learn that the V6 Santa Fe is about 400 pounds heavier than the V6 Escape/Tribute. It was about 1.5 seconds slower 0-60mph than Escape/Tribute.

I like Santa Fe, so I just thought I'd add this positive press from a basically unbiased source - Consumer Reports.
  • billtungbilltung Member Posts: 255
I don't know the 1.5 seconds slower in 0-60mph test is it using Automatic shift in Santa Fe or not?
Did they take the manual shift into account?

I find by starting using the manual shift it seems response(accelerate) faster than put in just in (D) mode.
Actually I did "Get set... Go!" in front of traffic light with so many SUV including Acura MDX, BMW X5, Tribute, Forester, Escape on the road, I always accelerate faster than them when started (I always use manual shifting when I raced with them.). I think On-road city driving the 1-2 seconds delay is not so important to me because simply there is no where in my city can allow me to start from 0-60mph in 10 seconds.

Is it the heavier body weight the less likly the roll over happened?
(There is an traffic accident happened 2 day ago in Vancouver, A light duty truck & a Rav4 hit each others, the RAV4 rolling-over several times on the road, the lady driver threw out of the car & killed instantly, is it because of the light weight contribute the roll-overs?

    Anybody can answer my question?
  • thor9thor9 Member Posts: 26
The e-mail I received from Fram stated that the PH6607 oil filter will fit the Santa Fe 2.7L V-6.

    It doesn't.

I bought a few today, and they are the wrong size.

Hopefully, Fram will correct their information.

The Crash test in crashtest.com shows a big improvement in all the Hyundai's 99-01 models (Except Pony & Excel due to these light weight).

    Pls visit

    http://www.crashtest.com/hyundai/ie.htm

But unlucky they still don't have the SF crash test report except its weight factor contribute to be EXCELENCE.

Would like to share with the group and get opinions, as I would still like to obtain a SF, but....

A dealer told me today that the Hyundai Central region rep personnelly told him that it could take up to 6 months to order out a Santa Fe. 6 MONTHS! And by the way one needed to place down $1000 to order out...

The rep also told the dealer that he should NOT order any V6 AWD for the foreseeable future, as in the last allocation shipment for the US central region their were 200 autos on the boat - only 90 of which were V6 AWD, and those had to be distributed amoung the 150 central US Hyundai dealers.

Seems like the production of the V6s are the issue, as they also have to be supplied to the other Hyundai car models.

Excuse me, but this seems to be an easy decision to make -- temporarily close one of the other model lines and concentrate on your best seller. As the saying goes "make hay when the sun is shining". This would be the time for Hyundai to really grab some market share AND SHINE.

Just when Hyundai gets a good thing going, they are going to chop off their nose, in spite of their face....hey by late summer / early fall Honda will have their redesigned CRV out, as well as Saturn's mini-SUV.

I really wanted a SF and still do -- but I am quite frustrated with the whole thing, and may be forced to consider the Escape (now that the recalls are done) or Forester.

Does anyone know if us 'common' folk can talk directly to the Hyundai reps,...where are they located?....where is their office? Maybe if enough people could write, email, or call...

So if anyone can tell me where the V6 AWDs are sitting in the US, please pass on to us folks in the upper Midwest.

    Thanks.

I personally know there are 2 Black AWD V6's at Rosen Hyundai in Racine Wisconsin. I was there yesterday looking. I called dealers in Chicago 2 days ago and the one that had the most was one called The Autobarn- They had V6 AWD's in Merlot.

I am wanting the 2WD in V6 and you want to talk about a hassle to find. My advice is just to go to
www.hyundaiusa.com and do their dealor locator for areas you are comfortable making the effort to go, and then just call. The people in Chicago all had orders due in about week( or so they said). You could have them look for what you want and see if it would happen to be coming in on their shippment, or even luckier they could have what you want in stock.

    GOOD LUCK!!!!

I also sent an E-mail to the people at wooddash.com about the "missing" piece in their kit for the Santa Fe. Their response was as follows:

    "Hi, MrTwix,

Thank you for your email regarding the "missing" piece for your Hyundai
Santa Fe dash. We have brought this to the attention of the manufacturer
that there is interest for this additional piece, whether or not they
redesign their dash, I don't know. We are a distributor and we do not do
the research and development for the design of the dash kits that we
distribute. You had mentioned that you had compared the dash that you
purchased with some others that are offered by other companies and found
that the pieces offered are not the same. I think you will find that to be
true on almost every dash on the market, not just the Santa Fe--dash
overlay coverage varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. We appreciate
the time that you took to communicate with us."

So, basically, they are saying, "Don't hold your breath."

    Hope this helps!

I thought the FRAM oil filter looked much smaller than the AC Delco filter. If you are going to change the oil yourself, go witht he AC Delco filters because they are the EXACT same size as the original Hyundai filters.

Can I get a few replies as to the total number of miles and/or kilometres everyone is getting with their AWD V6 SFs on a tank of gas. We have about 1000 kilometres on our vehicle and currently I have an eighth of a tank left and have only gone 295 kilometres, (mostly city driving and once up the mountain to ski). Our last tank we got about 400 kilometres. That is really poor and I'm wondering what everyone else was/is getting at 1000 kilometres and what they are getting now. Anyone have any idea why our mileage could be so bad? We'll be going to the dealer on saturday so hopefully they can help. (We love everything else about our SF, but hope to get much better mileage.)

Several replies would be appreciated. Thanks. :-)

I have about 2300 mi on my awd GLS. I really only do city driving and usually get 16-17 mpg. I really like this vehicle but am jealous of the the posts that are getting 20 mpg. But if I had to do it over again, I would still buy this vehicle! I'm glad I didn't wait to buy since it seems they are getting hard to come by. Still not sure if I'll put in a sunroof when spring comes. Waiting to see if someone posts pictures of one after it's installed.

    Hi Irchome,

Funny but I still haven't had the Santa Fe sit still long enough to install the dash kit! Then again I haven't seen all that much of my wife since she got it for that matter.
Thanks for the heads up and I think someone else mentioned the same thing awhile back. I'll drop them an e-mail today and see what's up with that. You're correct, that's an awful lot of money to spend for something that doesn't messure up!
I notice the Mr Twix has done the same and gotten the short end of the stick, so I guess if nothing else I'll join him and start collecting short sticks. Maybe I can make the damn piece from that?
Possibly we should find out WHO does manufacture the dash and blast them about it?

    Thanks,
    Richard.

My wife and I just bought a pewter 2WD LX with package 12 for 21,034 + TTL. I could only find one LX 2WD with package 13(ABS) in the entire Metroplex, and most dealerships only had 4 or 5 Sante Fe's of any type. Given the scarcity in the Dallas area, I was surprised that we were able to get anything at all off of MSRP. I wound up using your salesman, rbentrider, thanks for the contact info.

I rather prefer Hyundai's slowly releasing its all new SF than dumping thousands of SF on the market in the 1st year.
It makes the current SF owners feel their SF more unique on the road & make SF re-sale value go up (because when demand is high, then people will likely to pay more for a 2nd hand SF, if they can't wait & don't mind a used one.) I think it is what each SF owner wants to happen, right? At the same time, Hyundai's may sell SF for more $$$ in the future!
I don't think they worry about the new CR-V & new Highlander & new Forester coming soon. The reason is simply - the 3 Janpanese Musketeers (Toyota, Honda & Subaru) will never never beat Hyundai's SF price, the better the performance, style & well equipped new SUV will definitely asking for more $$$!

    It is my opinion!

    What do U think?

I'm in the process of buying a SF-LX. But I was shocked at the auto insurance cost ($80 per month) quoted by current agent, State Farm. I'm pay significantly less for my Suburban. I'd appreciate current owners to share the cost of insurance for their SF and if less whose their provider. At $80/mo. this would blow my budget and probably prevent me from purchasing a SF. I want to thank anyone responding in advance for sharing their insurance information.
  • jjnepstadjjnepstad Member Posts: 2
I was pretty upset with the cost of insurance too. State Farm raised it from my explorer rate of $70 to $90 for my Santa Fe LX AWD. Received a quote from esurance for $73 so I'll probably be changing companies. I quess being a first year Suv and parts being hard to come by are the reasons.

I have Unigard for my auto insurance and had liability coverage only on an 89 Mazda MPV.....After purchasing my Santa Fe in November my insurance rate only went up $50 a month for full coverage on the new vehicle....I rec'd credits for the alarm system and airbags...my Santa Fe is only FWD... maybe that is the reason....

We've had our LX, 4WD for a month and drove 1,800 miles-suburban & some freeway. Getting 21-22 MPG. Our insurance costs rose $200 a year over the 1993 Subaru Legacy Wagon that we had. We have Allstate and we are comfortable with the change.

About availability in getting one: If you're willing to travel, go to Portland, Oregon where they are imported to. We bought ours from Thomason Hyundai. See their inventory at Thomason.com Their internet sales department was spectular.

We have had zero problems. Suggest Hyundai add a light in the cargo area that activates when the back hatch is opened.

We're looking for a after market trailer hitch. Anybody add one using an internet supplier?

Why u suggest Hyundai add a light in the cargo area when the light already exist? Pls check again! It is located at the rear head liner close to the hatchback.

I talked to my dealer who said late distribution last year prevented many dealers from keeping their stock now.....official production/distribution was supposed to have begun in May....Korea didn't start shipping until August 2000 due to production line fixes necessary as a result of seeing some stuff on the pre-production models...Hyundai Chairman is a stickler for quality.....some dealerships didn't get cars until Nov 2000.....They just had a big Hyundai conference in Las Vegas and this was discussed....They predict that in about 2-3 months, dealerships will have the necessary stock and finding a Santa Fe should be easier...Rob

Many people in this forum have sincerely helped me in my pursuit of purchasing a SF, and I wanted to help out others when folks are asking for help.

As a result, as you have suggested, I have sent an email to the President of BITRIM Manufacturing, expressing my future desire to purchase the wood trim kit for a SF, but also expressing my disappointment of a part missing from its design. I stressed that I would expect more of a 'complete' look when purchasing that sort of accessory.

I asked for a reply regarding what course of action BITRIM was going to take I will post the reply once I receive it.

I would encourage others to do the same at www.bitrim.com. At the site, you can send email directly to the General Manager or President.

    Good Luck to All!

    Gray12,

The Hyundai hitch sold by the dealers is made by SureFit. Not a well known name.

Draw Tite makes a hitch, Model DT 41543, that fits the Santa Fe like a glove. The only part you see is the receiver box. The rest of the hitch is up behind the bumper. It will take 3,500 lbs, well beyond the towing capacity of the Santa Fe.

It is a bolt on job, no drilling, etc., as the kit includes replacement bolts for the ones you remove. You will have to loosen the spare tire and make certain it is all the way forward, and you have to unhook the muffler's two rubber mounts from their hooks, so you can put the hitch in place. Then retighten the spare bracket and hook the muffler rubber mounts back onto their hooks. Done, except for wiring the light harness.

Wiring the light harness requires that you get behind the side panel below the left side rear
panel window. You cannot access the brake and turn wiring from underneath the vehicle.

There are shipping tie down hooks on each side of the rear end bolted to the subframe where the ends of the hitch are bolted. I chose to leave these off as they serve no purpose beyond shipping and are just extra weight to lug around.
If you ever need to be pulled out of a ditch, etc.,just hook onto the hitch.

    Hope this helps! Good luck.

You're welcome. I hope you enjoy your SF. I've had my SF in to the dealership for service and they seemed to be good. The problem was a "check engine" light that came on at 950 miles. They said it was caused by not tightly closing the gas cap. My wife says "not so" but who knows. Time will tell. Anyway, they fixed it, were quick about it, didn't charge anything, and put me in a loaner car for free so I can't complain.

I have Allstate and I had a 94 Nissan Altima that I traded in on the Santa Fe. My Insurance dropped from $620 dollars a year to $580 a year.
I thought they may have made a mistake but they have not changed the rate from $580.

I live in Florida and only drive about 9000 miles a year, and we live in a suburban area.

I have no idea why my insurance dropped but I am happy with it.
