The dealership I have bought my LIncolns and Mercurys from for the past 16 years, hasn't changed the door code on their new cars yet, so I went down today and let myself into a couple of MKXs. I was pleasantly surprised!! It was very very comfortable, great seats, good expensive Lexus like leather used, cooled and heated also. Liked the layout - thought it was very attractive in the light tan color, hate the black interior, sorry. The sunroof, which I actually wouldn't want, is huge indeed, but it takes out considerable headroom. There is still enough, but I sit high. Great second row room, and cargo room. From an interior standpoint, I give it a B+. Still think the cowl is a bit high, but you can sit above it pretty well. The exterior, however, troubles me greatly. It's just ugly to me. It's ugly in the front, back and from the side. I can't find a view I like. I could put my wife in one, but I can't drive it. I'd have to bag my head. Would like to drive it - perhaps this week I'll go do that.

I think Lincoln did a good job with the cabin - couldn't find anything in there that seemed cheapish to me. Would like fancier guage cluster - the 77 Granada guages are pretty lame.

I read somewhere that all future Lincolns would be taking on the dramatic MKR concept grill, including the MKX. What do you all think? Would you prefer something different than the egg-crate look? I initially liked the egg-crate for its retro-ness, but think the MKZ grill has a little more kick-in-the-pants, and would have looked better.

I did some quickee Photoshop renditions of what the MKX would look like with both the concept grill and the existing MKZ grill. The MKZ grill looks very nice on the MKX. The MKR grill looks interesting, but I'm sure they'd tweak it a bit more so it fit the MKX better than my rendition. I'd like to upload them here for you all to see, but I'm afraid I'd get sued with copyright infringement.

Well first, don't believe everything your read about Lincoln. Most especially if it is written by Lincoln marketing as they have trouble even deciding how their stupid letter names should be pronounced.

That said, the emm kay arr is a nice, bold concept vehicle. Lincoln has shown about 1/2 dozen nice, bold concept vehicles in the past few years and has produced exactly zero of them. Unless you count the emm kay zee, which I dont count as nice and bold but rather a nicer look on a mazda 6.

Now to your specific question, Lincoln has said that their "thinking" is that their cars should now have the waterfall grille like the Mark Z, while their SUVs will have the eggcrate or electric shaver type grilles as in Mark X and Mark N (avigator). Of course, the MK LT is an exception as it is a truck and so has the waterfall grille so as not to look exactly like the F150 that it really is.

Now, that said, we know from para 1 that we cant believe what Lincoln says in para 3, so forget all that.

Will the Mark R grille look good on all future Lincolns? I say no, it will get tired and old fast. Besides, the one on the concept is way too bold to ever see production. It's too much like a cowcatcher on an old iron horse for my taste. THough I think I would like it if toned down a bit.

So, my opinion is - look for a grille somewhat like the emm kay arr on a Lincoln RWD expensive top line car around 2012. Assuming there still is a Lincoln in 2012. Else, they hope u like their Norelco-style grilles on their CUV SUVs till then and waterfall on cars. I like the emm kay Z grille. I do NOT like the emm kay X grille at all.

Well said, George! By the way, does the MKR look anything like the concepts that you saw when you were part of the focus groups?

"MKR look anything like the concepts that you saw when you were part of the focus groups? "

No, nothing at all like anything I saw. Neither did the emm kay ess. So I dunno why the focus groups if everything got thrown away. Maybe there were several different focus groups with different vehicles in each? Who knows? Only the marketing geniuses know I guess.

Come to think, I did see one car that I would say one could describe as a Zephyr with a Pontiac grille. But really, the emm kay arrr is one of a kind all round.

This is one of the stupidest things that Ford has done.

Imports use letter names because they often come from non-English speaking countries and it saves them translating the names.

Also it saves them from naming a car with a naughty word in another language.

Lincolns are only sold in the US.

  • Hmm...the MKZ could be nicknamed the Mickey Z. The MKR though is awfully close phonetically to Merkur...yikes!
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
And the first letter usually identifies the model, not the last letter. E350, E500, 530i, 330i, etc.

You mean that they don't have people from this country that can come up with names for their cars?

Sure they do. They came up with "LS". :P
  • scootertrashscootertrash Member Posts: 698
Don't forget the LS started as LS6 and LS8, so the Zephyr/Mark/MK-Whatever fiasco has historical precedence
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
    But for different reasons.
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
Gee, Toyota still uses names, albeit made up names, but names none the less, and doesn't seem to have a problem. So, I wonder why Cadillac and Lincoln can't keep their heritage names.... Ahhhh, there's that BMW, Mercedes and Jaguar thing isn't there? Of course, they're all european, that would explain it. So we must be as well. America has no good ideas anymore, and no good cars. We must imitate the Germans now. Great.

I liked Lincolns former tagline, "American Luxury". I thought it said it all, even better than Life, Liberty and the Pursuit.
  • scootertrashscootertrash Member Posts: 698
Sure, you say Lincoln is copying everyone else, but how many others are bold enough to have a single differentiating letter tacked on at the end of the name? How many of those use a number in the name or have some specific way to decode the name to help describe the car in some way?

Lincoln is indeed making bold moves
--Complete gibberish, confusing pronunciation, meaningless yet totally confusing at the same time.

This forum turned into a naming gripe page instead of MKX discussion.
  • bigtbigt Member Posts: 412
I agree, it would be nice to hear from someone that owns the MKX and how they like it so far. I love my MKZ and the name actually is sort of cool. Hate to say this but the younger folks dig the naming convention.
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
How do you "younger folks" pronounce your model name? EmmKayZee? or Mark Z?
  • bigtbigt Member Posts: 412
EmmKayZee but only because my sons name is Mark! :)

"I liked Lincolns former tagline, "American Luxury"."

Yep, me too. Except I *think* that is a bit of a misquote? I think the actual line was "What an American ___ should be." And the ___ was replaced with whatever they were trying to sell, notably as I recall the Navigator. (Aside- Was there one that said "Lincoln - American Luxury"? I dunno. I could have lost track. That actually sounds too good for their marketing dept to have come up with. )
Interestingly those were the days when the Navigator, though far inferior to the vehicle as redesigned in 2003, was the sales leader in its' class. Now, they're selling the Navigator by showing a guy (perhaps a famous basketball player though I don't recognize him) driving up to an inner city playground with a Navigator full of basketballs and giving it all, Nav, balls and all to the kids and coach there on the court. The tag line "My dream is to leave the world a better place ... " Pardon me for thinking this will not fly. BTW, the guy rides off on a bicycle. Maybe that's what he meant - he's no longer contributing to global warming cause he dumped the Nav off on the unsuspecting coach?

As for the other tag line, they'd now have to rephrase it to read "What a Mexican-Japanese-Swedish-American ___ ought to be" SO I dont see that one coming back.

"Don't forget the LS started as LS6 and LS8, so the Zephyr/Mark/MK-Whatever fiasco has historical precedence "

This is true. In the first year, one could see badging on cars which said any of LS or LS6 or LS8. the ones with the 6 or 8 are collector items as they went away quick when the lawyers from Lexus called, Lincoln folded like a cheap suit.

I didnt really mind "LS" cause to me it meant "Luxury Sedan". The new letter names mean NOTHING.
  • heyjewelheyjewel Member Posts: 1,046
As soon as someone buys an emm kay exx, I'm sure they'll post here. Just be patient.
  • lateralglateralg Member Posts: 929
What does "LS" on a Mercury Lynx, or Chevy S-10, or a Mercury Grand Marquis, or many others say?
  • heyjewelheyjewel Member Posts: 1,046
I dont know what your point is. In this case, LS is obviously a trim level. What does it say on a Lexus?

Ok, how about we wrap up the names rant and take the leftovers over to Dumb car names. Thanks.

I read post # 111 there and that's all it took.

    Hi All,

Just wanted to share with you my experiences so far with my fully-loaded new AWD Black on Black MKX, with panoramic view moonroof, power liftgate, and folding seats. I've had it for two days now.

The drive has been very smooth, very quiet. Much better than my 2003 Navigator that I just turned in to get the MKX.
The pick-up is not as great as the Nav --- the 35HP difference is noticeable --- but it is acceptable. Braking is fine. While the MKX stands lower than the Nav, I would have liked the MKX to have running boards.

I love the interior of the MKX; looks classy to me and the trims don't look plastic whereas it was definitely obvious in my NAV in certain areas. Leather is very luxurious-looking. MKX has excellent touch DVD-based navigation, controls are where they ought to be unlike the Navigator where the window controls were on the center console. The MKX instrument panel is easy to see and read. No problems there.

I am still trying to get used to not seeing the hood when I am driving. The driving view, though, is phenomenal.

As for the exterior: the jury is still out for me. My husband loves it. I am still not fully sold on the bubble or jelly-bean look and would have preferred a Nav-like exterior, but it is stylish. (Drove a NAV for 7 years, so I am still having NAV withdrawal symptoms.) However, the grill is definitely better than the new NAV, which appears to be a mouthful of braces, IMO. I rather like the MKX band of red lights (similar to the Mark VII) in the back.

BOTTOM LINE: MKX is stylish, contemporary, and practical. Pretty good replacement for the Aviator. It's been selling well here in So. California especially to former NAV owners --- or so I've been told by the many dealers I've previously contacted prior to getting the MKX.

I think I will grow to love this MKX once my NAV withdrawal symptoms disappear. LOL

Was there one that said "Lincoln - American Luxury"?

YEs, in 99, when I bought my first Navigator, that was their Slogan. I loved it.
  • bigtbigt Member Posts: 412
Yep, and I still have my 99 Navigator! Still looks good and rides well. I had to do the hydraulics in the back twice however but other than that not much.

"I had to do the hydraulics in the back twice however but other than that not much. "

    What hydraulics in the back?
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
I think he meant the air suspension.
  • nvbankernvbanker Member Posts: 7,239
    Yeah, pneumatics.....

Thanks for the feedback, lani5! It's nice to hear from an owner.
  • scootertrashscootertrash Member Posts: 698
Yes, be sure to keep in touch here and let us know how you like it.

My wife, saw one the other day and said "Wow that's beautiful" as it drove by.
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
So did my wife. We were to the left and slightly behind it and all she could do was stare and say "that is one nice looking vehicle". It will be a struggle to get her to look at anything else.
  • bigtbigt Member Posts: 412
That is what my brother and I said when we first saw the MKZ. It was like wow, nice! One of the few that gets a reaction. I must admit that I saw a new Caddy Escale or whatever it is and I also said what a truck!

Side note: LOL, did you see the New Camry in the 10 mpg front bumper crash test? Suffered 10k worth of damage!
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
Wow. I thought Camry's got way more than 10 mpg..... ;)
  • Not if you floorit all the time.

I asked the Lincoln dealer about Blue Tooth options for the MKX, and he said thy could install a hands-free Blue Tooth system called Mobile-Ease. Does anyone have this who could tell me whether they like it or not? Does it look OK once installed on the car?
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
I'm pretty sure it's a hidden component tied into the stereo.

If you can wait for the 08 models you can get the Sync with built in bluetooth and a whole lot more.
  • bfeldsteinbfeldstein Member Posts: 12
When do the '08 models come out?
  • akirbyakirby Member Posts: 8,062
    Typically around September/October.
  • mschmalmschmal Member Posts: 1,757
I have had this piece installed for customers. The mike is usually hidden against the a piller trim and the control box is about a 1" by 3" piece that gets attached by the radio. The wire usually gets hidden in the center console.

This piece offers way more stuff than some factory installed pieces.

Hello. Sorry if this quesiton has been answered before, but I searched and nothing came back. I am interested in knowing how it handles in the snow. Of course, I'm not thinking that it will be able to handle any off road. What I'd use it for is to drive to Lake Tahoe to go skiing. It is on major roads, but there can be quite a bit snow on the ground. A couple of weeks ago there was over a foot of snow. On paper, AWD and the 8.4" ground clearance sound pretty good, but I'd love to hear from somebody who has real world experience.

    TIA

    A.

PS I know that AWD doesn't help you to stop. I'd put snow tires on it.

I've had my MKX for a month now and having driven it 1200 miles I have to say I just love it. It handles wonderfully and has the smoothest ride I've ever had in a vehicle. I love the interior with all the textures and shades of color. The controls are all easy to get to and I think the dash & console look beautiful. I love the brushed look and I think it adds to the overall beauty of the interior.
I do have one complaint. Living in Florida the wndshield and front windows are way too clear. I had to get the front windows tinted and the strip put on the windshield because I felt like I was getting a sunburn everytime I drove the car. With the tint it is perfect. If only it got a little better gas mileage. hmmm
Another of my favorite features is the air conditioned
    seats. Now that's luxury!

Can you assist the rest of us here with a link to your source of information and what do you mean by "a whole lot more"? Thank you.

Thank you; having built-in Bluetooth in my BMW is a nice feature - now why couldn't Ford/Lincoln have had this available at introduction? It's almost like they're telling some of their prospective customers to wait until fall. Maybe they'll add another glaring omission: a rear cargo cover. Does anyone know if the black dashboard causes the reflection problem being reported? The Edge and MKX are my favorite domestic vehicles in years, nothing I can think of come close; I just wish they could have fixed what I consider significant omissions before introduction. Nevertheless, they appear to offer a lot for the money.

Hello. Does anybody know if the 2008s will include HID Xenon lights? The Adaptive headlights are nice, but they are Halogen. Thx.
