Agreed. We hit the foreclosure problem first, and we will be the first to get out of it. We're not quite there yet, but we're getting there.

Me too. I have to face the reality that I'm not a kid any more and 60-80 hours of heavy lifting each week is getting a bit much. Land in my area has gone up so much in the past decades that you can't justify farming it any longer.
The economies of scale enjoyed by larger operations gives them tremendous advantages over the little guys. Similar to the car industry. General Motors et al have the ability to move off shore, demand tax breaks and get bail outs. Just think how many small car makers there were in the early 20th century as opposed to today.
Get big or get out.

And..it was actually on your dime. They build this into the price you paid for that BMW.
Well...that wasn't really the point. The point was that I didn't have to pay, at that time, for the pads and rotors. Call it pre-paid or whatever you like. If it didn't need them, they wouldn't have done the work.
Besides, as someone here says, life's too short to worry about a few dollars.

I assume that was I71 in KY. Callers on Cincy radio suggest the troopers along there are somewhat rude and discourteous like every day is a bad day. I liked the Oprah roadtrip show a couple years back where they got nabbed by KY troopers on I75 and he told them they were tailgating on "his highway."
I wish the troopers there could see some of the semis tailgating and speeding.

I'm starting today. We're attending one of the 2,000 Tea Parties being held today in this country.

A neighbor lost his job about a year ago. He went through his liquid assets pretty quickly since he's got his daughter in a private college, in addition to normal expenses.
Not sure how things were set up, but he lost his car(s), which he had financed with home equity. He was on a variable loan, taking advantage of plunging interest rates.
Fast forward, his vehicles were repossessed.
Bottom line, I never thought it was a good idea to finance debt with a house as collateral.
I know his home "should be" worth about $325K. Haven't spoke to him in awhile, but based on other homes that have (slowly) sold in our general area, my guess is his home is worth maybe $275K today. With the home equity, he's now in a negative equity situation. That only compounds the issues when using home equity for other purchases.....like cars.
Had a local stop me last year and say, "Boy, you don't speed in my town." I flipped out. I said, "First of all, I'm not your boy. I'm old enough to be your daddy. Second, the last time I heard, this town belonged to the taxpayers." He asked me if I was trying to be smart. I said, "Just stating the facts SON." Oh hell yes, I got a ticket.

Me, too.
I never thought so either. I remember your neighbor. You have loaned him your Tahoe at times. I wonder how he is managing to hold on to the house. Perhaps he is getting one of those government refi's. It has to be a nearly impossible situation for him.

While I certainly agree with your conclusion - one should not "bet your house to buy your blouse", as the old saying goes - your neighbor almost certainly did not borrow against his house to pay for his cars. If he had done that, he would have had clear title to them & they would not have been subject to repossession.
I suspect that your neighbor had leased both cars & that they were repo'd after he failed to make the required payments.
South Carolina?
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Let's also add borrowing against your 401K plan to that category. If you lose your job and can't pay, the loan is considered a withdrawal and in most cases subject to an additional 10% tax penalty besides normal income taxes as well.
I have been guilty of both, but am aggressively "cleaning up" my financial sitaution. This economy has made me see things in a different perspective. I have 2 sons currently enrolled in college and will pass along my "wisdom" to them. Hopefully they will at least listen to what I have to say.
The only time I recommend people to use their home equity to finance a car is for people who have little or no mortgage. Most often these people will finance 12-24 months and for them it can be beneficial to turn an otherwise non-deductible interest expense into a deductible one for regular tax.
How did you ever guess? Some parts of that state are still living in the 1950's.
West Virginia is about as bad. About ten years ago, I got a ticket right at the W. Va./Va. border coming out of a tunnel. As the cop was filling out the papers, he had the gall to ask me how much I weighted! I told him that the question had nothing to do with the speeding ticket. He said that he would make a note that I was uncooperative! My partner from work sitting on the passenger side thought that we were going to jail. Did I contact a lawyer? You bet. The ticket was dismissed.

Real farm land out in the boonies has not gone up much in the last 40 years. Average is $2-3K per acre. I paid $3K an acre in 1981 and indications are it is now worth $70-80K per acre. Location, location, location.
Back to topic: I have plenty of room to park my old junky vehicles.

According to MSNBC, if you do that, homeland security will consider you a terrorist. Make sure you affix an Obama bumper sticker on your car before you leave.

No actually lifelong friend had been in navy in Charleston. Every time I visited down there I got the reminders about their cops and speed. When they had a river house near Orangeburg, I stopped at a general store on the way there and I would have thought I was in "Deliverance."
While we're on speeding tickets, a fellow at work who was in college and KY resident had gotten stopped by KY statie on I-75 back in 70s or earlier for something like 125 early in the morning in his full-sized Chevrolet. Cop asked if he knew how fast he was going... then told him. Leaned over top of car roof and lectured him and sent him on his way with NO TICKET.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
You aren't doing your customers a favor by doing this.
It's their choice. I always present two or three payment options: 60/72/84 month terms.
Since most people don't have or don't want to put money down, and want to keep their payments small, they go with the longest term.
84 months is not so bad if it's at 0%-2% APR. It's not so wise at 9-10% cause you'll be upside down forever. Therefore I always tell before theysign that they have to be prepared to keep the car for at least 4-5 years.

When he walks up to your car, ask him...
" Hey, weren't you one of the Village People?"
They just love that! Try it!
what is "Village People"?? and how will the cop be happy (or gay) about that?
Good luck with your sale. Better hurry though, Obama is now talking about "fixing" the tax code. You know what that means....

I like those kind of customers and those kind of deals. They may be skinny but they're very simple and pain free. You have to nurture this kind of business relationship though and put a client like this at the top of your list. That means instant service, inquiry replies, and small gifts of appreciation during the holidays.

I don't think "weighted" is a what you meant to say.

Nobody works harder than a farmer. Not only that, it is probably one of the most dangerous jobs there is...especially getting limbs caught in machinery and tractors flipping over.
We had a relative who was a farmer. He always said if he won a million dollars in the lottery, he would just keep farming until it all disappeared too.

We hiked through the "Deliverance" location last summer. At my age, I should have known better. It took all of my strength and then some. I was so proud to return home and brag about my feat...and my feet. :P
Richard
I agree. If they are foolish enough to demand 84 months, then there is no way that you can talk them out of it. They know the options.
Richard
I'm here today to say goodbye to all the good friends I have in Edmund's, and also to make amends to the ones that I offended although it was never my intent to do so. As most of you know what I'm going through and Isell and Richard have been very kind to keep you updated on my condition. I'll say the cancer is winning. So far I'm beating the odds but my body is getting weaker. The chemo stopped working last December and the doctors who are treating me have run out of options other than clinical trials that in my opinion won't benefit me so I'm staying away from them. I've decided to live the rest of my life the best that I can and take care of my "Bucket List". I've done a couple of things on it like; I met one of my favorite drummers David Garibaldi of Tower of Power and also the bass player at a concert last year. I'm taking one week travels to places I haven't been before. Next week I'll be going to San Antonio to visit a bandmate of mine and one of the greatest guitar players IMHO in this country. Plus I'll be getting at least 30 minute guitar lessons daily for the week that I'm there. My lifelong dream to visit Japan is still in progress and I hope to accomplish it later this year.
The prognosis is six months although no one wanted to say a figure and they are only going by what the statistics say. My last doctor said 18 months and this month is the 18th month so I'm still fighting. I feel good, in so much as what the disease goes. I look healthy but I'm in pain daily. This is not however, a plea for sympathy. That's the last thing I or anyone suffering from this disease wants. I just want to be treated like any other normal human being.
As some of you know, I became a grand dad for the second time this past March. Another baby boy that my daughter in law says looks just like me. His name is Isaiah and those of you that are religious (not that I'm much) know that Isaiah was a prophet. All I know is that I can now leave this world happily as my relief is now here on earth. :shades:

Gotta go to sleep and get on London time....about 5 hours ahead here.
Since they drive on the other side of the road, you have to look to the right when you step off the curb....and pedestrians DO NOT have the right of way here. Cars first.
