Oh yeah, and what are you going to do about it? Throw hockey pucks at our front teeth so we all look like you guys and then we wouldn’t know who to pick on?

Will you count that as a recent war and cross out Canada from your approved list of countries that make cars you'd buy? ;)

"Now I gotta reassure my customers that they shouldn't worry..."

It's a sad day for the world, but things will get better with Chrysler. I still love my new convertible and have no regrets. Still, I wish that the government wasn't going to back my warranty. There is no telling what they would do on a repair, since they can't repair the country. :shades:

to any particular posts, but i have skimmed the last couple of days and there are too many topics to address each individually.

my favorite thing about canada is that it is a good shortcut to get from connecticut to michigan. :)
really, i enjoy how well kept everything seems to be. even mcdonalds is much more 'cared for'. it feels like there is a pride of ownership instead of 'they made us upgrade to make the place look presentable.' philosophy.

i always look for the 'pirate ship' on lake ontario and feel bad it took a beating a few years ago, and has not been able to have been brought back to it's former glory.

there seems to be some hockey smack going on here.
i think the boys from beantown can take home "lord stanley's" this year.
next round is against carolina. they moved from hartford :(

there was a lot of pontiac/buick talk.
back when i was about 8 years old, my grandfather traded a piece of land(area still undeveloped) for a dark blue, white interior, 2 door, 63 pontiac grand prix.
my main memory of that was 6 of us went for a ride.
gramma, mom and my sister in the back, my dad driving, grampa in the passenger seat, and me sitting on the center console. :confuse:
it was a 5 passenger. i enjoyed looking at the gauge in front of the shift.
not sure if it was a tach or a vacuum gauge.

one of nephews is 24 and loves his supercharged buick regal.
the other day, he got a recall notice that it could catch on fire, under specific circumstances.
he brought it in to get the recall done, the next day the car caught on fire. :(
the dealer is denying it had anything to do with them.
he also is living as a sublet.
yesterday, he found out the owner sold the apartment and he has to move out by tomorrow.
he had a vacation planned to celebrate his birthday with his twin brother, but was so upset he didn't want to go.
he does have a place to stay for the next month, so i told him to enjoy his vacation and we will get the other stuff figured out as needed.
he might be looking to buy another buick.

Would I be considered a flake or a hot prospect

    Probably a flakey prospect. :P

Speaking of home security systems, I had a salesman knock on my door the other day wanting to give me $1,000 worth of home security hardware.YIPPEE! All I had to do was let them put a sign in my yard for advertising purposes. When I asked about a monthly service charge, he sidetracked the question with a "it depends" response. All in all I thought he did a pretty good job... pleasant, good with the small talk, not too pushy. He gave me their web site address so I could check them out myself, as I was/am mildly interested/curious.

Any interesting sales stories from Canada?

The only thing I can tell you is one of our employees bought a used Honda Accord 3 years ago. His extended warranty was never used so he gets a $700 rebate he can use for work or for items from the dealer. He needs new tires so he'll do that and get a tune up and a few other items. 3 years and no repairs. The only fault with his car, and it goes along with what others have said lately, he's sorry he didn't get an air conditioner when he was looking for a car. He loves the car but needs an air conditioner and he is going to see if one can be added now, and how much it would cost. Does anyone know if this can be done and at a reasonable cost?????

For other Canadian sales story follow Boomers excellent posts.

, I had a salesman knock on my door the other day wanting to give me $1,000 worth of home security hardware

I think it is really stupid for a home security company to come around to your house to ask if you have a home security system. One company did that to mme, and the fact is, I don't know who they really are, so I am not going to tell them I don't have a home security system.

Also, I hear baggage handlers at airports tell associates who is traveling so they can break in to their houses while away on a trip.

In this house when we moved in last August we did get a home security system. I love it because if you hear creepy noises (natural noises that all houses make) in the night you don't have to check it out...unless the alarm actually goes off.

I love that area in Ontario. Well, actually Connecticut to Michigan covers a pretty big stretch but I've spent several weeks out from Niagara Falls to part Long Point. Loads of pretty farm country.

I noticed the better kept stores as well. And we have no American equivalent to Candian Tire. I still have some Canadian Tire money around somewhere. I'll have to go back....

Canadian Tire has been such a great place to shop for car accessories, and now even more. They did try opening up in the US but it just didn't work.

Canadian Tire stores are 2nd though, the number one Canadian thing is Tim Hortons coffee and donuts! Smooth coffee that is consistent across the country in 100s of locations, and not as strong as Starbucks.

Just checked out Pinnacle Security Systems website. Their $1,134 worth of free security equipment reminded me a lot of dealership add-ons... about a 800% mark-up. Their "special" price only covers one door and 3 windows... big whoop. Looks like I won't be needing to replace my dog, Kujo, after all. :surprise:

...that '66 Grand Prix was a neat car.

Not sure if it was a real wood dash, but it looked/felt like it.

I’m going to say it was real wood because my 66’ Bonneville had real walnut wood inserts on the dash.

FWIW the window sticker on my Bonneville was $4007. I thought that was getting up there for a car with power windows but no A/C and cloth seats. However, those cloth seats were so much better looking and more comfortable than the vinyl seats I saw on a few Bonny’s before I bought the one I did.

The radio was am/fm with the "wonderbar" option (electronic motor pushed the tuning dial up and down the frequencies until it found a signal). 389 engine with a 4bbl. 3-speed auto on the floor.

I didn’t have the AM/FM “wonderbar” radio on the Bonneville but I did on my 68’ Olds Delta 88 Custom with the 455 Rocket V8 engine. It also had the 3-speed auto on the floor. That car had a sticker that was close to $4600 and it still didn’t have A/C. I must have been nuts to buy a car that listed for that kind of money in 68.

The only reason I mentioned the prices of those cars is so you would know what they cost back then compared to what the guy wanted for his 66' Grand Prix today. IIRC the 66' Grand Prix convertible that I saw when I bought the Bonneville had a window sticker of about $350 more than my Bonneville.

I always make good use of Tim Horton's when up there! In fact my travel coffee mug for the car is a Tim Horton's mug. Some of those small farming towns manage to support two Tim Horton's. That impressed me.

A few of those have made it across the border - particularly near the border.

No, we don't do that here, especially when we are ounumbered 10 to 1, we might get upset (at cold weather always coming down from Canada, when it really comes from the North Pole)

As far as I’m concerned, it’s who had it last before we got it. You guys just won’t take responsibility for nothin. And to think, you’ll probably get a bail out from us with how you push the blame onto others, like the poor Eskimos. :(

We might recall actors like William Shatner, Eugene Levy, Martin Short (both went to my high school), Jim Carrey, Celine Dione (I know - yay!), Avril Lavigne (probably too young for you to know about), Pamela Anderson…

So what’s your point? You have good dentists up there? They were probably trained in the USA. ;)

I agree. With the dog inside at night, we don't even leave the security system turned on. Since he has eaten one meter reader and one electrician, we feel that he can take care of any robbers.

Yes, every little town has at least one Tim Hortons here and there are over 400 in the USA, including a few on I75 for Canadians heading down to Florida. Smoother and not as strong as Starbucks at about half the price!

I think you are getting more crotchety with age or your new Jennie is having some kind of negative affect on you. Are you referring to the Edmonton Eskimos football team or the real Eskimos that live in the far North. If I am guessing, I think you are saying, since I blame cold weather coming the North Pole, I am shifting it to our friends the Eskimos.
Maybe the Jennie is leaking gas fumes :P or are they from another source?

Slightly related. I went with a friend on a trip to Elmira Ontario yesterday in his fairly new to him Accura TR (the larger one). He always buys an upper grade used car. His last few cars were a Lincoln and a Chrysler LeBaron and his prvious car was about a 1999 Olds 88 with everything on it. He liked all his cars, especially the Olds, but the Accura is by far his number one choice....the handling, solid ride, reliability make it far superior to his previous cars. He was going to a factory that makes 1950s style kitchen appliances, and though I am not sure who buys them, they were really interesting to see....

j....regardless of the car involved, we all try not to get caught up in the moment, as not to make an irrational decision.

That's why I stepped away from that Grand Prix. If I knew I could drive it for a couple of years as a nice weekend car, with little in the way of maintenance....AND I could get my money back at the end of the period, I probably would have jumped on it.

I just don't have enough information. That said, you make it sound like a reasonable deal. My "checks" are pretty rudimentary. Is there a rust bucket underneath the shiny exterior? Has it been a rebuild? Is it "straight"? Does everything work?

For all intents and purposes, I could do minor mechanical work on it myself. Tuneups are relatively easy....plugs, points, distributor cap. But, I wouldn't want to become a good JC Whitney customer, either.

The A/C condenser alone is probably the size of some economy size motors today.

Still, it's a toy.....one that I would like to have, but probably would be "stung" if I looked at it as a zero sum financial outlay. It could be a financial black hole for all I know.

Or, should that really be "Oh, Canada"? :P

In a previous life, when I traveled for business, I had the wonderful opportunity to spend quite a bit of time in and around GTA (Greater Toronto Area, for those not in the know).

    Things I like about Canada

    * Just different enough from the US to know that you are in a different country - use of the metric system, the accent (long "o" in 'process', for example)

    * The food - where else can you get gravy on French Fries? Swiss Chalet. The Pub. I've never been a big fan of Tim Horton's, as I'm not a coffee drinker, but I do love donuts

    * The cleanliness .. someone once described Toronto as "New York, sanitized".

Things I don't like about Canada

    * The weather in winter - I spent a couple of weeks in Trois Riviere in February and what felt like a month during one week in Winnipeg

    * Blue laws - try finding a store open on Sunday

I know that you always think that I am a dreamer. I'm not saying that Fiat will be the salvation, but perhaps their progress in technology and fuel efficiency will help. Also, I believe that better management will result from the reorganization. I simply refuse to believe that we will see the end of one of the Big Three. I don't believe that the auto makers will allow this to happen. We need another K-Car experience, and I think that it will happen. To show my good faith, Mack and I have discussed buying some Chrysler stock. I know. I know. You think that I'm crazy.

    As for your schools question

Actually here at our dealership we have a training program that is a week long. it teaches you the steps or the process to the sale. It teaches you word tracks. Word tracks that you use from the very beginning (such as how to "meet and greet" the customer all the way to word scripts on closing the customer. We have a bunch of scripts we use to over come common objections. Now these word scripts will not be useful in anyway if you have no people skills. That you can not teach. But for instance someone that just came out of the training will program can say the same word tracks that I will use. When they use them they will ussualy sound like a robot. Where as someone like me who has been using them for years will sound just like a normal conversation..... alot of these sales courses are the same techniques that Zig Ziglar uses, Joe Verde, and many more.... We just a little different spin on them. We also get very much into the physcology of the buyer. Meaning, getting people to think with there left brain instead of there right brain.... I am way to tired to get into explaining that one but I am sure Richard may know what I am talking about. I am sure JMonroe doesn't know the difference between right and left brain becaus ehe uses more left bicep and right bicep to get anything accomplished..... :P

Hope everyone had a great month..... including the non car biz patrons here....

Boom- Even I am a little worried for you. I wish and hope for the best for you in these troubled times! I see you are still looking at the positives and I commend you here. Ya never know what is going to happen. The dealership I work for has a good pulse for the market and we discussed recently yesterday that GM will be following Chapter 11 shortly..... Rumored to be next month.

Oh for the record I had a great month....

Used to be, you get the job, go out and try selling...if you could sell you lasted, if you can't you had to look for another career. Now the experts have devised courses based on scientific research. Kind of takes the fun out of it. I wonder if some of those top sales guys from the past, like Joe Girard (Top salesman for several years) with a grade 8 education, would have lasted in todays sales world.

Thanks though GP for telling us about the courses though, kind of reminds me of a simpler time when salespeople just went out and did sales, and they weren't tracked on a GPS unit, sales methods weren't analyzed, and they didn't need a course to cover every circumstance.

It's nice to see you posting again, though I realize that you have been working hard lately. Congratulations on having a good month. Yes, there is a great deal to be said about the right brain/left brain theory, and it is good that the business world understands it---and uses it. Simply put, your left brain people are more analytical and practical---science, math, engineering, etc., while your right brain people tend to be creative, visionary, and artistic---English, music, art, etc. I mentioned learning styles on here a month or so ago. This theory would go along with those. It now appears helpful for salesmen in all fields to be aware of their clients' preferences and perceptions regarding products. It would seem that you took the training to heart and that it has paid off for you. Keep up the good work.
