He wouldn't work long here!
I didn't believe this one.
You're going to have to do better than that.

The car came in and she came in to look at it parked it in the shade, which makes the gray show more. She said it was the wrong color, she had order the tideland green. I pulled the car out in too the sun and she went Oooh I see.
Next day, a very cloudy rainey day, she called saying that the car was the wrong color , she did not leave with the tideland pearl that we showed her but a diffrent car. I told her, no she left with the the right car and right color.
The next week she recieved her calendar, we take a picture of the customer next to thier new car and send them a calendar and a xmas card with the picture. She brought the calendar in with the picture of her standing next to the her new car saying that the car in the picture was the color that she wanted not the car that she got. The flash on the Camera makes the green show up a lot more than the gray.
You're going to have to do better than that.
Jmonroe, why don't you try contributing something useful? Like a story?
-Moo
P.S. In the end, does it really matter if it's fact or fiction?
I don't know if you've noticed this, but all of my hybrid customers have been, for lack of a better word, strange. I'm not sure what it is about that product, but we all know that certain products attract a certain breed.
I like guessing what people drive when I see them in a parking lot. I'm a little sick like that.
The fact that you even ask that question speaks volumes. Maybe the hosts would create a new topic "TRUE stories from the sales frontlines".
I'm almost ashamed of you guys who troll these forums looking for a fight to pick.
A while back you said that us guys that weren't in the biz should sit back (or something to that effect) and let the guys in the biz take over and tell some stories.
Well, I'm 'sittin back and reading' but that doesn't mean I believe everything I read. Do you?

Also, spell this one out for me. Exactly what does that say to you?
Without harassment and moral soultending. That's exactly right and that still holds true. I could care less whether you believe my stories or not. And I don't care if the stories I read on here are true or not. As long as they entertain and they have to do with the topic we're discussing.
next.
Maybe I just don't get the way you sell madman. Doesn't make you a bad person. I just can't make a connection.
Separate question...what is the type of person that buys a hybrid?
I think with that we've gotten to the bottom of this.
Until just recently this board was a very credible place to come for information. Sadly, I'm not so sure anymore.
However, I am sure that when Edmunds went through the trouble to create this board it wasn't for the purpose of wannabe-fiction-novelists to have a place to try out there tales.

Exactly.........this place is getting more like the 'Twilight Zone' every day now.
One of you answer my question. Why does it matter if a story is fact or fiction on THIS board?
I never said the story wasn't true, by the way. I'm just asking why it matters.
Until just recently this board was a very credible place to come for information. Sadly, I'm not so sure anymore.
Ya, I'm sure there were never any tall tales told before. Everthing you read on the internet is true. Right? You guys are unbelievable and sad. Truly sad. Enjoy the stories. If you don't, shut it.
Hey Kirstie, how long have these guys been doing this on these forums? They have an argument for every single post. How can that be possible? I saw one of em correct someone on their usage of 'possum'. Wow! I'm sorry if I'm offending THEIR forum.

First, it's not a private forum. Second, some people like to engage, confront and argue just for the sake of engaging, confronting and arguing. Let's try a little less confrontation, more real stories and more scrolling when you encounter postings you don't really care to read.

Didn't you read my post 4778.
What part of that didn't you understand?

Great, me too. I just wonder why it's always confronting? I appreciate the fact that they think I'm lying.
more real stories
You don't believe it either? I've got more that you won't believe too. There are tons of stories like this and a ton of em surround Psycho Salesguy. I'll keep telling 'em. Jmonroe and his lackeys can keep crying about the denigration of their forums.
I still haven't gotten a response to my question though guys. I feel like I'm in a battle of wits and you guys came unarmed. Catch up already.
I did and it didn't answer my question. THIS forum is for stories. I'm not sure how you're going to take someone's story about selling a hybrid and use it for your credible information. If it's facts we're dealing with, I can understand your concern. However, it's stories. So I ask you....why does it matter?
And you won't answer it... I know. I'm done.
I think, once again, we've been had.
We do take the bait every time though, don't we?
FWIW agree with you.

Psycho
Story?
The customers that I don't understand are the "color freaks". For these people, COLOR is the only thing that matters even on used cars.
They will ask me to move the car into the sunlight or shade so they can see how it looks under different lighting.
I know we are all different but I just can't understand how the stupid color can be that important.
I mean, there are colors I don't like either but with my wife and I, there are usually at least three or four colors that will work for us just fine.
You are not alone! :surprise:
1) Normal people don't make a living on commission. It requires a special kind of personality to do that; one that you don't find in the "normal" population. For better and worse.
2) Some people see life as a zero-sum game - in order for them to win, someone has to lose. These people are your most aggressive sales folks, and your most aggressive managers, motivating and pushing, and not giving an inch more than they need to.
3) Management is very forgiving of good salespeople, and very protective of their top salespeople. And that's because while you can teach techniques to newbies to improve their skills, real salesmanship is much more art than skill.
4) You never know who will make a good salesman, so it doesn't matter what your background is. Which means you may find yourself working with all kinds of characters on the job. Good salesmen can come from anywhere.
Here's some background information on Psycho. Keep in mind that this dude is extremely charismatic. He was in the Air Force and thrown out. He was an exotic dancer. He sold home security systems, door to door! He was on the Ricki Lake show as one of the sexiest men in the u.s. Oh ya, this guy has stories surrounding him.
Naw I fell for it too and you didn't take much longer than me to figure it out.
And I agree with you on color. right now just about any color but black and that God awful orange that Caddy had.

Truer words have never been spoken. While I am a better than average salesperson, I don't think I will ever be one of the 25+/ mos guys. I just haven't been able to get there on a regular basis.
Here's an interesting exercise, if you walked into a dealership and looked around, think about who you think would be the best salesperson there. It never seems to add up.
We have a salesperson at our dealership who works 1-2 weeks out of the month and typically sells around 30 cars/mos. He is very short, unassuming, dresses in worn out clothes, and is very quiet. Nothing about him screams salesman. But he's incredible.
We have another salesperson here who is a natural. If he wants to sell a car he does, but he's also a headcase. So he can sideline himself easily and take himself out of the game. If you looked at him, you'd just think he looks kinda goofy.
All of that to say, I agree. There is no stereotype for the best. They come from all backgrounds and you never know what you're going to get. The best salesguys have an intangible that you can't teach. Maybe one day I'll experience divine intervention and get blessed with being a natural.

My BS detector keeps going off and thats pretty accurate.
Thanks for continuing to call me a liar. Is anyone going to answer the question I posed to the reigning 'authority' here at the board? Snake? Graphic? Monroe? Isell? Anyone? Why would it matter if someone made up a story?? I'll reiterate for those who are slower on the uptake. Everything about the story I recounted was true.
With that said, even if I did make it up, why would it matter? Remember the fiasco on Oprah? The author of 'A Million Little Pieces' made up almost the entire novel. Oprah only found that out after countless people had called in and told her about how it had changed her life. When she found out it was fiction, she freaked. But what if she never found out it was a lie? Didn't it still help people?
So, one more time. Spell it out for me. Why would it be a problem if someone did come on here and make up a story? Fill in the blanks for me. Thanks.
-Moo
If it's a common occurrence, it's probably only a matter of time before someone sets a trap for the food thief. I'm not suggesting that you would do that, but there's probably someone in the building that's ticked off enough to do it.
But I want one of them to answer. If they don't, that may be the first time I've ever silenced them. I guess if they can't answer, that means I've made my point.
Btw, ever noticed how everything ties up to Oprah?
Nyuck nyuck.
But I do believe madmoo about the psycho sales guy. One of my college buddies ended up in sales (not cars) and he's told me some real horror stories. Sales is a truly unique skill. Those that are good at it will do very well, those that aren't, won't stay long.
He understand that and is happy with the over 10,000 dollars in discount we are offering on these cars.
Now it comes to the trade. It is a Late 90s Grand cherokee with full time four wheel drive and the V8 motor. It has well over 100,000 miles and is in a little bit of rough shape. It needs tires, probably needs break and has its fair share of dents and scrathes.
I tell him that we don't play games with the numbers for tradeins they are just worth what they are worth.
He hands me the keys and I start the jeep up to look it over.

oHH man that is a rod knock and a very bad one.
I go to make a couple of quick drives around the parking lot and I can feel the front end pulling as the whole truck wants to crab walk across the parking lot.
Failing viscous coupling for the AWD system. Fairly common problem on vehicles with a viscous coupling AWD system. I see it all the time on Freelanders.
So I have been working with this guy for a while now and I know that he doesn't know much about cars. He probably hasn't even noticed the rod knock as it developed gradualy over the past few months.
There is no way he would have noticed the viscous coupling problem as it isn't something most people are familar with.
This jeep is basicly a parts car. Outside the car the rod knock is even worse and our used car director for the whole company gives us the "kill it" sign as he is afraid the motor might let go right there.
That rod could let go at any time and so could the coupling.
It is a 500 dollar car but I am sure he thinks it is worth 3,000 dollars or so as that is KBB trade in value for this car in good condition.
And........
I went back to him explained what I found explained that the rod could let go basicly anytime and told him 500 bucks.
He is blown away since he thought it was worth 3,500 dollars or so.
I didn't even get into the problem with the transfer case/transmission.
I am going to give him a call tomorrow and see how he has thought it over. I am pretty confident that he will end up going to some domestic store that will over allow by 3,000 dollars with 15,000 dollars of rebates and he will end up buying an inferior product from a store that won't offer him any where near the level of service we will.
Like I said, I'm out.

Do you mean if someone came in with lets say a Jeep that is worth 25,000 dollars and wanted to trade it in on say a lexus that we took in trade for 25,000 dollars how much would we actually charge for the lexus on retail??
We do take the bait every time though, don't we?
I figured this out many posts back. It's just that every now and then I like to humor myself but I'm all laughed out now.
Tell us a real story, even if you have to repeat one. C'mon, OK, OK ?
