I have been using Sunoco a lot lately. I was surprised it was not top tier, but I still have a fondness from when I was a kid. And good enough for Nascar, good enough for me! Sometimes Gulf too (is that "good" still?)
I was surprised that so many of the TT stations seemed like cheapies (mini mart ad ons), and that very few were in Jersey. The Shell and Exxon near me tend to be noticeably more expensive ($.10 on regular, and often .$25 on premium)
I'm well aware of that. It's not efficient to refine Venezuelan crude at at Citgo refinery in Texas then ship the gasoline up to Boston
I guess it's the principle I maintain - that Chavez and his philosophy are so against the US and my own personal beliefs that for me to directly (or indirectly in this case) financially support a socialistic and/or communistic political regime would be contrary to my very essence! Again, in this case (who knows if the Shell I buy is actually distilled from Venezuelan crude), it is merely the principle I am endeavoring to be true to - I do not agree with his political agenda so I will not buy what he has for sale (knowingly).
Citgo fuel down here in South Florida sells, on average, for 3-4 cents a gallon less than the other tier one brands - but unless it is an emergency (middle of the desert, 1 gallon left in the tank, and only Citgo available) I just refuse to buy that brand of gasoline. It's a choice I have available to me.
just because new laws may be implemented, current ownership will change little
I totally agree, but, you have to start somewhere. I am not saying to take guns away from people, just saying they are too easily available. All the factors mentioned have to be worked on, from mentally ill people, to a way to have some kind of control....and it has to be done in steps.
I have been watching the Mankind Series on the History channel, and it is excellent. The part about the U.S. breaking away from England explained a lot. Against impossible odds the citizens banded together and used "guns" to fight the most powerful army in the world.....and then an incredible country was formed with democratic values and equality for all.
I understand your need to defend what you have accomplished, it just needs to be modernized....we live in cities now with lots of people. Laws should change with the times, just like the English language.
I have been using Sunoco a lot lately. I was surprised it was not top tier, but I still have a fondness from when I was a kid. And good enough for Nascar, good enough for me!
It's good enough for NASCAR - as long as Sunoco continues to pay $10 million a year to NASCAR to be the "official gasoline of NASCAR".
I am not saying to take guns away from people, just saying they are too easily available.
I agree. Stop the manufacture and import of all the ones they want to ban.
Then the few I own will be worth a fortune. Kind of like the Thompson (Tommy Gun). They were a few hundred dollars new. Now (if you can find one) it's 5 digits to buy one then there is the Tax Stamp, etc. Can you relate it to Shelby?
Never could tell a difference in different brands of gasoline. Shell stations around me always seemed to be the first to raise prices (whenever a Sheik sneezed) and the last to lower them. They also like the practice of charging more than $.10/gal per grade upgrades....which isn't customary with other brands.
In short, I avoid any brands that do any of the above.
My main brand is Costco. They're price is always competitive. In a lot of cases, they are as much as 20%-30% less than any of the competing brands around me.
More importantly, in the 10 years I've used Costco gas, I've never......NEVER....had any issues with it. My MPG is just as good with Costco gas as it is with any other brand.
When the economic meltdown happened in '08, I remember pulling into Costco for gas while the tanker was there filling the underground tanks. While the tanker had no brand markings on it, the driver was wearing a Shell uniform.
Since it was early in the a.m., I went over to talk to the driver while I was filling up. I asked him whether he worked for Costco. He said "no". He worked for Shell. But, Costco buys gas from whichever refinery can meet their "standard". Shell happens to be one of them.
I just downloaded about 5 albums onto the hardrive. Then I deleted the songs I don't want. I bought about 35 songs from i-Tunes as well. Now, I have about 80 songs on the hard drive that I can mix up by playing them at random.
Then I will record 4 or 5 hours of music on a USB Flash Stick. I can get that music from Icebergradio.com, which is like Pandora in the US, but can't be accessed from Canada.
We leave for Tampa on Sunday, and it takes about 24 hours of actual driving time. I can use Sirius for awhile if I need a change, but, I haven't been too happy with their playlists lately.
It is unbelievable what todays cars have. I can listen to the exact songs that I like, with beautiful sound. Soon all cars will have this feature I am sure, it is too good for the manufacturers to not add it to most new cars. It is stretching my capabilities though, learning how to do all this isn't easy.
Funny, I didn't even know the car had this feature until it was mentioned here.
driver - have you given thought to getting an iPod or iPhone and just using that as your music player on long drives?
I have done well to do what I have done, with help from my IT expert.
I hate to admit it but I have a pay as you go clam type of cell phone that I use once or twice a month, maybe. I am surprised it actually works with the cars bluetooth.
I really like my playlist, but I like regular newstalk radio for every day listening. This long playlist is just for long trips, so it will do for now. But, when my $60 cell phone goes, I'll have you post instructions for me.
One idea I am looking for though is this. Let's say I am awake at 3 or 4a.m. for some unknown reason. I like to have some nice music playing (no headphones) and I use a transistor radio under my pillow. Sometimes though, especially on weekends they have those info commercials hawking health stuff.....scaring me half to death telling me I need about 80000 units of Vitamin B78! I believe an ipod needs headphones. I need an ipod type device that I can record music on with a little speaker that I can put under or inside my pillow that I can lie on.
iPad is your friend, then, if a smart phone is out of the question. Preloaded music, streaming music, books, Edmunds (of course) and other Internet sites, games, video calls, travel arrangements, etc. I bought one for my dad, and then my wife, and now have one for myself. They have the mini version available now if size is of concern to you, and it's tough enough to slip under a pillow.
I admit to having most every gadget one should own and I can't say enough great things about the Ipad. It is by far my favorite toy. So convenient for forum reading and general internet browsing. The only thing I do on my home PC is pay bills and burn CDs/DVDs.
iPad is your friend, then, if a smart phone is out of the question.
Thanks tyguy and tjc. I think you have convinced me. I'll check it out and if that works (it sounds like it will), then that is what I will do. The portability will make it nice for taking to Florida, on a plane or even in the car.
iPad is your friend, then, if a smart phone is out of the question. Preloaded music, streaming music,
I have a question. My IT guy was busy, but I think he was saying, why get a $600 iPad just for music. Sounds like I should get a bargain priced tablet, not apple, and use it to down load music and use the wi-fi to listen to internet radio.
We have one e-reader, but, if I wanted another one I would get a dedicated e-reader.
"...whatever refinery can meet their "standard"..."
A few years ago we had a gas tanker driver work driving our buses to pick up extra money. He told me that all the different brands came from the same storage tanks at the port. The only difference was the additive package which was put in as the truck left the storage depot. On occasion when the additive machine broke down the trucks delivered the EXACT same gas to all stations.

Roadburner, I'm sure you remember Karl Brauer, a founding father of IL. He had some interesting comments. I think you have to go about 16 pages in from the beginning. Anyways, I hope they can make this new format work, but we will have to see. I really enjoyed the random order of the 'when posted' topics.
2024 Ford F-150 STX, 2023 Ford Explorer ST, 91 Mustang GT vert
On occasion when the additive machine broke down the trucks delivered the EXACT same gas to all stations.
Then what you are saying is that there really isn't a difference between Shell, Texaco, Hess, Costco, Citgo, Sunoco, Unical, Mobil, BP, etc.? I find it hard to believe that Mobil or Shell is the same as Costco or Hess.
I've burned Cotsco gas in my previous Mercedes Benz cars, but not the direct injection engines - I burn Shell and Chevron - both of which have additives recommended for the DI systems. I asked Costco, and I was told it does not have the same additives - it's just purchased in bulk at a negotiated price from the port. I was told that Costco sell over 500,000 gallons of gasoline a month at our outlet in Pompano Beach - but most of that bulk was regular unleaded. Right now, their premium is selling for $3.50 a gallon - or about 25 cents a gallon less than most gas stations.
I sure wish we could find out if Costco gas is appropriate - my Mercedes dealer recommends Shell or Mobil or Chevron.
I'm not too versed in the non-Apple options. I use my iPad for most everything and your needs may be different. I'm typing this on my iPad right now, in fact I just bought a thousand rounds of .45 ACP ammo, answered a bunch of work and private emails, scheduled some calendar items, and next I'll be watching a web show, all from my iPad while I lounge in a comfy chair. Love it.
I went with the 4G version and am always connected regardless of wifi availability as long as there's a cell signal.
If music is the only priority, I'm certain there are cheaper options. I first bought mine so I could limit how much I use Windows at work. Now it's my primary electronic device in addition to my Samsung S3.
Mwercedes is pointing you to the Top Tier stations in your area - Top Tier gas.
As has been said, all the gas comes from the same places and the differences are in the additives. The top tier outfit requires more detergent than the government does. Your owner's manual probably tells you to use that stuff.
2015 Mazda 6 Grand Touring, 2014 Mazda 3 Sport Hatchback, 1999 Mazda Miata 2004 Toyota Camry LE, 1999.
Why 4G? That's just another bill. Do you have a smartphone? If so most can provide a 4g hotspot. I do it all the time with my Android phone and an App called Fox Fi.
The only difference was the additive package which was put in as the truck left the storage depot.
That is my understanding. All the tankers pull up to the same source, every company uses the same gasoline. Each company adds it's own separate blend of ingredients, which are sometimes questionable. I don't think Shell with TCP made any real difference in mileage though they said it did. I think TCP was an extra pint of jet fuel
. I use my iPad for most everything and your needs may be different.
The i-Pad sounds amazing if you are using it for all those activities. I really just need a source of music, limited commercials, preferably my choices, no headphones, small enough, can be set low sound.
Driver, the Fire is an Android based tablet. It's much more than an E-reader.
That might work then. My IT guy said try for an Android type, not too cheap or it will breakdown. Doesn't have to be an iPad which is more expensive and far better than what I need.
No, the Kindle Fire is actually a tablet. You can download music, browse the internet, email, etc. and read books. Around $200. Pretty neat.
That sounds perfect, I like the sound of that. I'll check it out for sure.....and by check it out I mean I will ask the IT guy who knows me and knows about these things....sounds like that could work though.
Ok, so all is well after my 2011 328xi's 1st service. ECU was re-flashed which got rid of the cold start revving, a loose wire was found to be the trouble of the tail light on the left rear trunk causing the light to flicker, the hinges on the hood were adjusted so it is now aligned properly, & a faulty trunk latch will be replaced in about 3 weeks when the part arrives. The car was washed & vacuumed (believe me, it needed it).
So I've got a few parting comments about the 335d they gave me as a loaner car.
Between Monday night and tonight, I put 231 miles on the diesel loaner. The needle was at the 1/2 mark when I filled up and it said I still had over 300 miles until empty. I did a little more highway driving than normal because I had to drive my Grandma home after dinner (about 25 miles) and then return the loaner (another 28 miles).
I filled up with Diesel that was $4.33 per gallon. Super at the same station was $4.19 per gallon. I did see another station that was selling diesel for $4.59 and Super for $4.29.
In 231 miles, I averaged 42.3 mph & 32.2 mpg. I was driving normally and not trying to get good gas mileage, it just happened.
I hopped into my 328xi and headed back home. I backed into the driveway and checked my trip computer. 38.8 mph average speed. 21.5 mpg.
Both cars have their positives and negatives.
The 335d obviously has a HUGE advantage when it comes to power (425 lb ft of torque - ARGH, ARGH, ARGH) and fuel economy (pretty much 10 mpg better real world). The passing power this car has is just unreal. Push down on the throttle and it just goes. Pulls like a freight train.
My 328xi's steering is actually heavier than the RWD 335d. Handling was hard to judge because I was driving a car with tires that NEEDED to be replaced and it is someone else's $50K + BMW that I didn't want to wrap around a tree or telephone pole.
The 425 lb ft of torque, RWD, & balding tires made the car's wet weather traction squirmy. I even saw the DTC light flicker a few times on dry pavement.
My 328xi was noticeably quieter and smoother than the 335d. The around town diesel clatter didn't bother me, but the car's N52 Inline 6 just sings and loves to rev.
The verdict. The diesel motor is just incredible. The fuel economy it gives is just an added bonus. For me to put one in my driveway would most certainly cost me more than the buyout on my 328xi, plus I'd have to invest in a set of dedicated winter wheels & tires, and possibly get a used winter beater (Jeep or Subaru).
The other diesel cars on the market either won't match up to the way my 328xi drives (VW Passat, Jetta, Golf TDI are all FWD) or they are A LOT more money (X5s aren't cheap, even used). It has peaked my interest to give a 4 cyl BMW diesel a chance (X1, X3, 3 series) assuming they are out when my lease is up in September 2014.

FYI, the Grand Cherokee will offer a Diesel engine starting March 2013.

Good review and interesting to get your views on comparing the two cars. It seems anyone who drives or owns a diesel loves them. You also have to factor in the fact that they probably last twice as long too.
That changing over to winter tires would kill the deal for me, I did that every year with the 328 Cabriolet. Load the tires into the trunk and backseat to get them to the dealer, and reverse it in the Spring.
The 535 has AWD and that seems good enough for 99.9% of the winter. My days of changing tires over and storing them are over hopefully.
Isn't the deisel version available with AWD?
That extra MPG is a nice feature too. I found the steering on the 2013s to be lighter than previous models, I think to lighten the car they added electronic steering. I prefer the firmir steering of the past. They probably offer an M package like they do on the 535 and in Sport mode the steering becomes stiffer...it will probably cost many $1000s more though.
, the Grand Cherokee will offer a Diesel engine starting March 2013.
You just reminded me.......after tennis yesterday I was asking two guys about the cruise they went on because it was a trip I would be interested in. They went one way through the Panama Canal. There aren't too many more cruises I would go on but that is one I would consider.
The mentioned they were at sea for 5 days. I said I don't like at sea days, and i am surprised you didn't have a destination somewhere in that period.
They said they were supposed to stop somewhere in Baja Mexico, but, that part of the trip was cancelled because of possible violence in the area.

Really? That's the easy part. I change mine in my garage. Three cars takes about 2-1/2 hours including washing the wheels before storage.
Around here, some tire places will store your off season tires for you if you buy there.
I change mine in my garage. Three cars takes about 2-1/2 hours including washing the wheels before storage.
I take mine to bmw to change....takes about an hour wait time, plus an hour round trip, and costs just $60. Storage is $200 a season, $400 a year.
I would rather have the convenience of AWD. Not saying one is better than the other, it is just personal preference. I try to simplify my life and I don't get any enjoyment from changing tires....I have done that enough on some of the old beaters I have owned.
nyc....good mini review of the diesel. I've never been a diesel fan for all the same reasons most people don't like diesels. However, I have driven several in Europe as rentals. If fuel was $8-$9/gal and the delta between regular and diesel wasn't so big (around my area, it's $.40-$.50/gal more for diesel), I might consider it.
abacomike.....I'd pit Costco up against any "branded" gas out there. I've yet to see any other gas brand guarantee their fuels like Costco does. That is, you have any issues related to their fuel, they'll fix your car on their dime, no questions asked, and return your fuel purchase price. This comes straight from their corporate office. I sent them an inquiry when I first started using their gas asking about their policy. TYGUY...thanks for the link. I've seen it posted before, but couldn't find it.
iPad vs anythings else.....I love my iPad. I use it for a multitude of things...email, viewing spreadsheets and powerpoints....viewing PDF files, watching videos and listening to music (via headphones) when traveling, etc. However, it doesn't support "Flash".
I know you can get keyboards for the iPad. But, any time I've tried to use it to do any sort of work, it's pretty "kludgy" given there are no USB ports (to transfer files, for example).
Frankly, I use a MacBook Air for most of what I do. It's light. It packs easily. It has USB ports. It has a real keyboard and trackpad. It's tough to beat it, actually.
But, you'll get many, many opinions of one over the other. Go to an Apple store and look at a MacBook Air and an iPad to decide which works best for you. Then, go to Apple's on line refurb site to buy whatever you choose at a discount. They give you the same warranty as new, too.
The first test involved luxury makes and many did not perform well. Toyota also performed poorly in this new round, but congrats to Honda, Subaru, Suzuki, Nissan, Ford, and Chrysler. VW had mixed results but Driver will be glad to see his Passat recommended. It's a tough test.
Really? That's the easy part. I change mine in my garage. Three cars takes about 2-1/2 hours including washing the wheels before storage.
Me too, I changed the MS3 out Sunday and the 328i yesterday. It took a bit over two hours for both as my back was hurting a bit plus I always clean the take-offs before I store them. Cake.
From my standpoint, a RWD BMW is more than worth a couple of hours of easy labor every year.

If it has a USB port for the Flash Drive so I can listen to music it sounds perfect. I believe it even has stereo sound, and I can use it to download books which might be necessary once we sell the book business,,,,and I actually have to buy my own books.
I'll look for one when we are in Florida and there may be sales in January. I think I will ask for one for an early birthday gift.
I agree with you that snow tires work (very well I might add), but we had a nasty nor easter here about a month ago. it was predicted to be a wintry mix, but ended up dumping 7" of wet snow on the roads. The roads were a complete mess. Just another day at the office for my 328xi. If I still had snow tires to change over into, they would have been sitting in my boiler room at that point. I'm willing to deal with the extra weight & performance penalties.
That said, maybe I should look into getting a set of snows on the cheap at the end of the season as I'm probably going to have to buy a new set of tires before my lease is up anyway. I can just see this conversation not going over too well with my wife:
"What do you mean the car needs new tires already? It is only a year old and has 20,000 miles! WHAT? You are buying SNOW TIRES? It's March for cryin' out loud!"

That's not like Richard. I haven t heard from Jmonroe either. I think Richard is decorating his house for Xmas.
Hey guys, I’m alright (in a way), honest and I hope Richard is also.
I’ve been plenty busy trying to blow well over $200K of the company’s money, proving via extensive testing, that a product we have isn’t as good anymore as we (mostly me) thought it was. If I don’t get canned for this I’m going to be known as the Teflon Don around here.
Catching up a little now, so it won’t be too long until I’m back in the saddle pestering you guys again.

AWD with summer tires is a little better than just RWD but imagine it with snows.

It's pretty much already the end of the season. If you haven't bought snows by the middle of December, many dealers are sold out.
My car has all season tires on it. I wouldn't DARE drive a car with summer only shoes in the snow, AWD or not. One year we were having an exceptionally mild winter. I left my Yokohama S.Drive Summer Performance tires on my Prelude simply because I LOVE the way it looks with the stock wheels (my winter wheels were black 15" steelies mounted on Pilot Alpin PA2 Snow Tires). Well, one morning I got caught with my pants down. There was literally a dusting of snow, maybe 1/2" at the most and I barely made it out of my parking lot.
You are right about it being the end of the "snow tire season." Oh well, there goes that thought.

I admit to having most every gadget one should own and I can't say enough great things about the Ipad. It is by far my favorite toy. So convenient for forum reading and general internet browsing. The only thing I do on my home PC is pay bills and burn CDs/DVDs.

Thanks tyguy and tjc. I think you have convinced me. I'll check it out and if that works (it sounds like it will), then that is what I will do. The portability will make it nice for taking to Florida, on a plane or even in the car.
Very good info!

What do you guys think about that?

A few years ago we had a gas tanker driver work driving our buses to pick up extra money. He told me that all the different brands came from the same storage tanks at the port. The only difference was the additive package which was put in as the truck left the storage depot. On occasion when the additive machine broke down the trucks delivered the EXACT same gas to all stations.

I think you have to go about 16 pages in from the beginning.
Anyways, I hope they can make this new format work, but we will have to see.
I really enjoyed the random order of the 'when posted' topics.

I went with the 4G version and am always connected regardless of wifi availability as long as there's a cell signal.
If music is the only priority, I'm certain there are cheaper options. I first bought mine so I could limit how much I use Windows at work. Now it's my primary electronic device in addition to my Samsung S3.
As has been said, all the gas comes from the same places and the differences are in the additives. The top tier outfit requires more detergent than the government does. Your owner's manual probably tells you to use that stuff.

The i-Pad sounds amazing if you are using it for all those activities. I really just need a source of music, limited commercials, preferably my choices, no headphones, small enough, can be set low sound.

Just wanted to pass that information along.

Really? That's the easy part. I change mine in my garage. Three cars takes about 2-1/2 hours including washing the wheels before storage.
Around here, some tire places will store your off season tires for you if you buy there.
I take mine to bmw to change....takes about an hour wait time, plus an hour round trip, and costs just $60. Storage is $200 a season, $400 a year.
I would rather have the convenience of AWD. Not saying one is better than the other, it is just personal preference. I try to simplify my life and I don't get any enjoyment from changing tires....I have done that enough on some of the old beaters I have owned.

abacomike.....I'd pit Costco up against any "branded" gas out there.
Never knew that existed. I'll have to check it out!

IIHS Test
The first test involved luxury makes and many did not perform well. Toyota also performed poorly in this new round, but congrats to Honda, Subaru, Suzuki, Nissan, Ford, and Chrysler. VW had mixed results but Driver will be glad to see his Passat recommended. It's a tough test.

I think I will ask for one for an early birthday gift.

I'm concerned about Richard. Sent him an E-mail a few days ago and no response.
AWD with summer tires is a little better than just RWD but imagine it with snows.
That said, maybe I should look into getting a set of snows on the cheap at the end of the season as I'm probably going to have to buy a new set of tires before my lease is up anyway.
It's pretty much already the end of the season. If you haven't bought snows by the middle of December, many dealers are sold out.
You are right about it being the end of the "snow tire season." Oh well, there goes that thought.
