    "...a debate about suicide prevention..."

If you think getting rid of all guns will prevent suicide, think again.

A guy I work with had a son who killed himself by jumping 70 feet from an overpass into the traffic on the Interstate. Not to mention the number of single car "accidents" that are probable suicides.

A mind tortured enough to commit violence to itself or others will find a way. :(

We've actually bought 2 mattresses from Bob's & an entertainment center. We bought a spring mattress for my older son & a bob o pedic for my younger son. We're impressed so far.

We also bought an entertainment center for our 46" TV. Is it high quality like some of the Ethan Allen pieces we have? No. But it looks nice & was pretty inexpensive. It sits in our basement now. I'm not sure if I should buy a bigger TV for the living room (currently 46" LCD Samsung), or buy a cheapo plasma for the bsmt.

    "...some sort of malfunction..."

At least the older hard wired fire alarms work with a radioactive alpha emitter facing a detector. If something like smoke or a spider gets between them it triggers the alarm. If that emitter wears out it could trigger the alarm too.

We've had ours go off a few time at night, what a jolt! Usually I just get up on a chair and blow into the slots. That clears whatever is in there and the noise stops.

Yes, like Jordan's is owned by Berkshire Hathaway.

Our house has furniture from several sources, including one local that has beautiful Arts and Crafts (Stickely) type furniture. I go to Bob's for the candy... ;)

RIP Pats. Still a fine team, just a little more mortal when it comes to post-season challenges. Darn, Wes. Last year's Super Bowl drop, not your fault. I put it more on Brady. But yesterday's? Ouch, game changer.

What is the difference between a Lincoln and a Ford of the same size and type?

Aside from a higher MSRP and flashier styling, not much. Lincoln had an excellent chance to position itself where Cadillac is right now. The LS was a nice sports sedan that could have grabbed the CTS market share a few years ahead of Cadillac, but Lincoln continued on with its scattershot product development and marketing. When I visualize a Lincoln product planner I always think of this.

Ask him how much his monthly rent is on the land.

$100 a month...he has to pay separate to have it maintained.

We live in quads, houses built in 4s....2 face forward and 2 back, with 1 1/2 car garage in the middle.

Maintenance is $330 a month and includes basic cable, outside insurance, all gardening and there is lots of it, (almost said snow removal), all repairs and updates to exterior including painting. Also, we have a pool kept at 86 degrees and a full gym in the clubhouse, and a few nice get togethers a year.

Some people resent paying condo fees. Back home we probably pay that much for lawn care or snow removal a month. I am glad they look after the maintenance when we are away. People are good down here, so the neighbors check on the house a few times a week. I think it is a great set-up.

Your in a condo so it different than my in-laws.

In their community, they own the homes but pay an amount every month to rent the land, to maintain each home's landscaping and to cover the costs of the pools, clubhouses, wood shop, et al.

Any exterior maintenance on your home is out of your pocket.

Yes, every plan is very different. Some people really prefer a detached home down here, they can't see the point in paying fees. I like the fact that we can leave and the house and grounds will be maintained. And down here I like having knowledgeable people look after pest control and things like that (termites for example).

The trade off is that you do get condo meetings and people complain about the most trivial things. One lady sent about 6 letters to our management company about how they trimmed a bush outside her screened in porch too much. She wants the gardeners to keep a file on what should be done for each house. OMG! The gardens are beautiful, and what idiot wants to waste their life away writing stupid letter? Rhetorical question...only someone who doesn't have a life.

There was some sort of malfunction in the system base.

That was the 3rd most likely reason for the alarm going on the excellent google site. #1 was a dead battery, #2 was dirt or an insect clogging up the sensor, and #3 was a malfunctioning unit.

If I had that noise going for more than 10 minutes I would have started ripping out wires myself.

Hey, I didn't get a newspaper today, Tampa Bay Times, I guess because of the Holiday. Happy MLK Day (isn't that a kind of Lincoln, an MLK?), or Inauguration Day...whichever you choose.

I know I couldn't watch CNN because that's all they talked about all weekend long (the inauguration), Fox News pretty well ignored it. It's OK, no explanations needed. Good football games and Australian Open tennis games though.

I have known enough people in either townhomes or condos where the association fees skyrocketed for various reasons to shy away from them. Now while I can see paying the fees a lot of times the fees exceed what I pay for outside maintence of my house.

The trade off is that you do get condo meetings and people complain about the most trivial things.

Not only that but you can also get power hungry people on those boards who tend to be overly strict. And at times way to many restrictions on what can be done to the property.

you might want to do them all now, if they are all the same age, but it is a waste of money (and not at all green!) to replace them that often.

that only makes sense in battery operated units. In a hard wire, the battery lasts a long time, and as you found out, will give you early warning.

so MHO is, replace them now, then wait until the next time one starts cheeping and do it again.

and if it does go off for no apparent reason (especially if it is just one unit, not all of them) first step is to run a vac over the slots, or blow hard into it, to try and move the dust out.

Buy the bigger TV for the living room. I have the bigger/better set in the basement (man cave) and it hardly gets used.

They are both aging Sony LCD projections (the kind with the bulb). I've been eyeing up a few new sets, but it's not a super priority. The upstairs one is 7 years old on the original bulb, I guess we don't watch much TV.

If I was to replace it, I would go 65. I have a 50 now and the stand will easily fit a 65. I've seen some 70", but that may not pass the WAF. She is very easy going with all my equipment, can't push it.

7 years? Our Sony was on at least the 2nd replacement bulb by then.

when the 2nd went, it coincided with redoing the 1st floor of the house, so I got a 52" Sharp flat panel for the family room. the 50" Sony projection went downstairs (kids area), where it rarely gets used, and my son took the 32" flat panel from down there to college with him.

what I need is a bigger set in my bedroom. Basically the same size room as the family room, and the %%V is actually farther away from where we watch from, and at my age, a 37" just ain't cutting it!

some day I will find a 47" on a blow out sale, and just get it with a bracket and hang it on the wall.

Put the larger TV in the room where you watch the most TV. I like a 50" at a minimum, although the 42" Panasonic 720p plasma in the basement system is fine for watching TV on DVDs as the viewing distance is @6'.

while I can see paying the fees a lot of times the fees exceed what I pay for outside maintence of my house.

For sure. I doubt if I would buy a condo in a brand new community. Too many unanswered questions. You need a certain percentage of buyers until you can be registered, and managvement fees tend to be artificially low. Our community is 20 years old and our unit is 10 years old. It is mature enough that things are pretty solid, and I think the $330 a month is reasonable considering.

Yes, sometimes people who want those board positions are the people who shouldn't be on the board. Last time we talked for about 40 minutes about whether non-owners should be allowed to come to board meetings.
It seems some owners can't come to Florida any more, but, they allow their adult children to live in their house here. It shouldn't be a big deal, they are the one's living here, so why shouldn't they have input. But, some people have to have strict rules.

No one will be 100% satisfied and condo rules aren't for every one. Overall I like it. I like that the houses are all kept to a certain standard, cars can't be left in the streets, the maintenance is done...I don't even have to think about it. Even painting of the exterior, new roof, insurance on exterior, etc.

Our home up north is detached though...it's just what suits the situation.

That sounds like good advice. The alarm that has a low battery hasn't been changed in at least the 4 years we have been there. It could have been put in when the house was built 6 years ago.

The thing is, it can go offwhen we are away in Florida, and the one in Florida could go off when we are up North. I think I should change them all, then make a note to change them in about 3 years.

I forgot they aren't drawing power like the ones that actually run on a battery, the fire department says to change those once a year.

Speaking of TV's, I bought a new one a couple of weeks ago.
Nothing special, 46 inch Sony 120mhz.
It replaces a 40 inch Sony I bought about 7 years ago.
Picture is much better, but sound is worse.
Will have to buy a sound bar.
One thing that bugs me is that not all the cable stations display on the whole screen.
It was very obvious watching the football games yesterday, CBS was full screen, but Fox has 3 inch or so black bands at the top and bottom.

You Ohio guys, I hope you didn't run into any trouble on I-75 or I-275 today.

was stunned that someone like electric stoves over gas...

Induction is not like an electric. It's faster than gas (or just as fast.) It's more efficient (less energy wasted.) Safer too.

The only downside is that not every pot and pan work with induction. Ours did, so that wasn't a concern.

car theft. They are talking about a Cuban ring in Tampa. All I can say driver is, watch yourself.

We are on the borderline of Sun City Centre. If you know about Sun City they don't allow anyone to live in the town who is under 55 (just joking but I doubt if there are many children in Sun City. Golf Carts are allowed on all roads except the main highway through town - you can cross the main highway though, at a traffic light.

Sun City has everything seniors need and every kind of house or condo apartment. It has about the lowest crime rate in the state, because if you are a young person you would be carefully watched.

We live next to Sun City and the crime rate is pretty low, same with surrounding towns such as Apollo Beach.

We have 72 condo units and small dogs are allowed and families or children could live here. It has only happened once though, and those children are now away at university. So, yes, it is possible children could live here, in practice, the chances are not great that it will happen.

If children go to the pool they have to have adults with them. Most places allow children to visit, even if it is a 55+ place. Overall, I like the 55+ rule your BIL has, but this really works out the same.

Have I dissuaded you from staying over?

I find that might have a good side too, if the kids are good, then it kind of keeps things more youthful, so it isn't just a place for old people.

Most of the newer flat screens (especially LED backlit models) have poor sound. The one in my bedroom is so bad I had to hook up an amp and small speakers.

For my living room TV I've never even heard the speakers as everything runs through the home theater setup.

Stick, the TV in our bedroom is also too small. It was a gift so I can't complain, but a 40" would be much better!

So when I'm ready, I'll look at 50" Samsung. Not sure if I should go for LED or stick with the LCD & save a few dollars.

. Writing is easy, getting published is not. I am under no delusion about this,

I worked for a major publisher for 16 years, and you are being very realistic.
Many people are putting their books on the internet these days, amazon will publish. There have been a few books that have sold millions of copies this way, and the authors went on to sign big contracts with large publishers - the Shades of Gray books are one example.

If you want to go to a publisher directly getting an agent as you suggested earlier is the only way to do it. Publishers will only take on new authors if a legitimate agent who they trust presents them with the book.

If you self publish take the book to book stares and let them sell it on consignment, usually have to do 50%. If it sells then you can take that track record to a publisher.

Your book sounds like it is on an interesting topic and war related books as well as spy novels are a popular category.

Giood luck...getting published is very difficult, but, if you make it what a great accomplishment, it takes a lot of talent to hold peoples interest and broaden their imagination.

There are guidlines for how big a screen should be, depending on how far you are from the TV set. Maybe 1 foot of TV screen for every 3 ft you are away from it.

    This chart is really amazing though;
    What size TV screen

We have a 40" for Florida but we should have got a larger one. Do it right the first time and you will save more than if you have to replace it. It doesn't cost much more, esp if you average it over the life of the TV.

HH Greg has a good make 60" for $899 right now.

Speakers on this 40" Philips are not great, actually rumbles if too loud at the wrong frequency. The TVs are so thin now, some are 1/2 inch thick, but they haven't figured out how to make good speakers that thin.

My BILs 40 inch Sony has a much better picture than my 40" Philips, so get a good make - it is worth it.

I look at it this way, I will be published. The question is how? I will try the traditional way first but if that doesn't work I will get it out as a self published E-book. There is one place I know of that if I get them a properly formated Word document and cover art (the daughter has a friend who is a graphic artist) they will convert it to an E-book and get it out to sites like Amazon.com. All they charge is a commission when the book sells. So doing that will get me out for nearly no out of pocket cost.

They also sell through Amazon too.
I just finished a book that took place in just post WW2, but it was a major disappointment.
It has potential, as it involved U-234, but as the pages ran down, it just sort of ended, like it ran out of pages.
It was a ghost written WEB Griffen, which have never been my favorites, but I thought I'd give it a chance.

Was trying to help a family member fix their home system up which consists of one of the oldest HDTV's ever made. Best connection it has is component video. They had a under two year old Sony cheap DVD player that was biting the dust already (always told them the cheap one's won't last).

The women of the family went shopping, and while at Kmart, over the phone I told them to pay a few extra bucks for a cheap blu-ray player instead of wasting money on an old DVD player. They found a $75 Samsung and I told them to get it and some component video cables that they found for $11.99.

The worker at Kmart failed to let them know those cables don't work with that blu-ray player (nor any of there ultra limited selection because the cheap manufacturers have gotten so cheap that they don't even include basic fundamental connections, like component video, or analog/RCA audio outputs (although some do have the audio outputs).

No wonder K-mart /Sears is on the way out! The helper/worker should have caught that those cables didn't work with what they were buying!

So the father in law and I decide to correct the absurd situation, and go to Best Buy ourselves (not much choice in this small town area of CA). While they had more selection, they also carry all super cheap stuff and none of their blu-ray players had basic video connections (although some had the audio).

I ask the employee at Best Buy that came up to us if any DVD or Bluray players had component video connections. He said there were a few with the old yellow red and white video connection (wrong, red and white are for audio, and yellow is an ancient form of video cabling and wiring).

I told him, no, component video is "red, blue, and green!" He said "OH!... ." I think he was clueless!

He said we should just get a cheap DVD player with the yellow red and white. He said none of them had the component connections we were looking for. We looked at the display models and none of them had component. So we gave up, bought the ultra cheap $34.99 Sony DVD player. We were at least going to get the Sony over no-name brands. We were dejected that we couldn't find a decent DVD player at BEst Buy (by the way, my Oppo Blu-Ray has component connections).

I mutter and moan on the drive home that Sony used to be the KING of containing a good array and assortment of connections on things; one of the things I always liked about Sony, and was shocked even their Blu-ray players were lacking.

When we got home the DVD players shockingly had component video connections! (Thanks Sony!) I was starting to wonder how DVD players could say progressive scan without it (they can't unless you have HDMI; which this one doesn't). Therefore, I was right; BEST BUY sucks and their workers don't know their product at all! He talked us out of buying something more expensive, and we thought we were unhappier at first, later, we ended up being happeir, but no thanks to him.

How does a Best Buy employee not know something as basic as component video connections, and moreso, what DVD players have or don't have them? The only logical answer is that they know absolutely nothing about anything in the store.

because most of the employees are probably ST minimum, wage earners that 2 weeks ago were working at taco bell? At this point, most of the real experts have probably long since bailed on the big box experience.

and pretty much, when you shop at the place that is all about the lowest price, you get what you pay for, including advice.

Now, if you want to really have expert knowledge, go to a specialist store, and pay more for better quality.

And I am 99% sure that with a TV that old, odds are you are not going to actually get the benefit of blue ray, certainly not without an HDMI cable.

also a sign to get a new TV I guess!

    >You Ohio guys, I hope you didn't run into any trouble on I-75 or I-275 today.

I had posted links to the two accident areas on Inconsider Drivers. Drivers won't slow down as soon as they move into snow, rain, heavy rain. Then when the surface is slick, they plow into each other like bumper cars.

At least it will be good for the repair shops and new car business. Maybe stimulate the recession a little.

Sadly, a 12-year old in the I-275 wrecks was killed. A cable barrier wire snapped from impact somewhere and she was caught by that cable after she had gotten out of the car.

andres....no disagreement with you about Kmart sales competence. Best Buy is better, but only slightly.

Best to research (online) before you go into any of those places to find what you want.

Regarding component connections, they are legacy. HDMI cables have much more bandwidth and as such, can carry both audio and video signals (component only has bandwidth for video signal). Plus, with component connections, you also need audio cables (usually toslink). So, you have this morass of cables and the additional cable cost to do it the way you suggest.

My guess is the HDTV that only has component connections is an RPTV. That's almost ancient today. Mitsubishi was the last company to make RPTVs, and they ceased production about a year ago (yet they made them with HDMI connections). I'm also guessing that the TV you're talking about didn't have LED lights and color wheel to project to the screen. The older ones from the '90s had red, green and blue lights that were projected on the screen. Those bulbs had to be changed every couple of years. If they weren't, the screen would be quite dim by now, probably out of convergence (focus) and probably not even remotely close to the pic a modern plasma or LCD/LED set will put out today.

Not to pile on, but if you didn't have those RPTVs professionally calibrated (at no small cost...I did mine myself, but I knew how to do it). the picture could be pretty dismal, too. Plus, you have to recalibrate every time you change a bulb in the set. Bulb cost, calibration cost, dim/fuzzy picture....all to be able to use an old DVD or blu ray player with component connections?

Finally, those sets used a ton of electricity, probably 3x-4x what a modern HDTV uses.

That makes no economic sense to me.

nyc....like roadburner, I'm a plasma fan. I have a Pioneer plasma, which is one of the last ones they made. They had decided they couldn't make any money on HDTVs (they were right) and started selling their sets out of Costco, where I bought mine. It's about 4-5 years old. It still puts out a better picture than anything else I've seen currently. I have a 65" Panasonic plasma in my home theater room that I bought about a year ago. I had the Pioneer in the HT room. It's now in my Den. The picture on it is still luscious. The den has a good amount of light coming through. My plasma is fine there.

But, in your case, if you have a really bright room, LCD/LED is the way to go. Those have dropped in price so much, it's tough to make a bad call. I'd stay away from the off brands like Westinghouse, Best Buy's house brand (Dynex, I think).

Bought my Panasonic from HHGregg (another good deal to be had). But, Best Buy has "specials" from time to time that are tough to beat. Costco has a wide selection and good pricing. Plus, you get their sterling customer service (except no delivery).
