2003 silverado 5.3 v8 - At about 1800 to 2100 rpm, a high pitched chirp sound is heard. Sounds like a muffled telephone ringing. Goes away over 2000 rpm. 97000 miles. not heard below 1800rpm.

i had same problem on my 2008 Gmc Sierra. Ended up being cv shaft was snapped. I started to noticed it when backing up and turning either way i'd get a knock. and then it eventually got to the point when i would be pulling into a parking spot.

Hi, I have a Silverado 2500HD Truck. I recently encountered a problem with my truck. I will be driving down the highway and as soon as I reach 50 mph my truck begins to shake. I took it to get the tires checked but they said tires good. Then i took it to get it check by mechanic he said I had error codes saying their was a misfire on cylinder 6, 7, 8. I replaced all the spark plugs and wires but continue to have the same problems. Now the mechanic says It can be several things but we wont know until he replaces each thing. I read several people with the same issue. Has anyone solved it?? I would appreciate any advise.

    Hi,

    I have a 2003 chevy silverado1500 ,

I have a pop/ kock noise in the dr side weel when i come to a stop. i jacked up the frount of the truck and found out that my inter tie rods had some play in them so i replaced my inter and outer one on the left and right side, figerd that would fix it , it fixed the noise that i had when i turnd, but not when i brake, i can make it do it when i stop hard or if i hold the brake all the way down and put it in drive or to back up and give it a lot of gas it will do it one time, then if i swich gears and do the same it will do it then , but it dose it every time i stop hard, i can feel it in the floor or brake when it dose it and i can hear it over the radio as well. i checked to see if i had play up and down on the weel and it did not feel that it did. as if a ball jont would be bad, dose any one have a clue as to what it mite be?
    Thanks Dan

I have a 2001 chevy silverado 1500 LS. I was driving uphill one day and my truck was losing power and was not shifting to 3rd gear. At that time, a loud and schreeching noise came from the undercarriage. Thats when the truck stalled on the hill and died out. I restarted the truck again, it starts up and idles for a bit but then dies out. My truck was towed back to the house for further review. I used a GM scantool to scan for error codes. The codes that pulled up were p0300, P0101, and P0135. I know the meaning for all of these codes and replace everything except p0300. The scantool also showed 1, 3, 5, 7 of the enigine side was not responding. I was told it could be the catalytic converter. Where do I begin with this? I am not looking for the "quick" fix, but just the right fix. Any help would be appreciated!

Hi We have almost the same problem, except we are eating mid-grade life time brakes within 9 months to a year,we changed rotors and brakes and now the noise is worse then ever, My brother said he had the same problem and it was the hub,and that the axle can slip right out, we are going to the chev dealer Wednesday, and will now then, wish me luck, If you have found out anything differnt please let me know/ thanks

Hello, sorry to interrupt the thread...my issue started 1 week ago with vibration/growling noises at about 10 mph as I let the gas go and almost stopping. Thought it was a heat shield but no go. This week it has become louder and happens at 40 mph. Also when I turn off the engine, it does a "clunk" noise. When I take it to an auto shop - murphy's law - the vibration is not as loud so the mechanics can't really hear it. They also said the "clunk" noise is normal. I don't think so! The truck has 78K and has always been taken care of. Any suggestions are appreciated. Thanks so much! S.

I TOO HAVE A NOISEY 6 SPEED THAT I WOULD HAVE NEVER PURCHASED IF I KNEW THIS WAS THE DESIGN .My truck downshifts when i slow and each gear it clanks and pops from the driveline, and of course when you are on/off the gas at any speed and it leaped forward when i came to a stop twice like it was stuck in 2nd-it downshifted into 1st and it gave itself throttle!!!,I almost rearended someone. My first brand new vehicle and I cant stand rattles and noises,I have owned a 90&97 which had some play in the suspension/driveline after many miles ,but this truck is literally driving me nuts. Took it to 4 dealers and nothing, they are all deaf and the sounds I hear are normal and thats the charictaristics of the 6 speed.I'm pissed because it started around 400 miles and I called and took it in,"its learning-keep driving" so I drove. Another 3k and its still banging away, bring it in and the same answer, keep driving. Then after 6k another dealer, same and the 4th was back to where I purchased it , now she is pushing 10k. We dont hear anything, normal charictaristics, so I went into the showroom to see what I will get for it,what a loss. The salesman had no interest in helping me, but bending me over on a 4.8 model without the 6 speed,he said he needed to call Ally to see what I owed to make a "fair"deal??just tell me what you will give me and how much for this one, not what kinda payment are you looking for-sir.I gave the guy me info to make him happy ,then he adds $500 on to what I owe because I gave him a estimate ,I went online on my phone while he called!! I called customer service and went back and forth to get at least some kind of Xtra compensation on a trade above bluebook considering they told me to keep driving,it will go away and it has severly depreciated. Customer service reply---sorry,we dont warranty noises

Hi folks, I had a bad grinding noise in my transfer case. I brought it in and they said the TC is shot. The local gm dealer found one and I had it installed a lone with a front ujoint and yoke.. The original unit was np261hd the reman unit only has a gm part number on it 24228435 and when I searched the number it comes up with nv261. I would think there still the same though new venture or new prosess...Now I have a hum-vibration right at 60 then it kinda goes away then at 70-75 it get real bad. I can feel the hum/vibration through the floor board steering wheel seat, it like sitting in one of them vibarating chairs at the mall :-)... Im thinking the driveshaft might be un-balanced....
Has anyone been through this ??

I have a 02 Silverado that has 151,000 and does the same thing. It is a defect
in the skirt piston length, and over time it builds up carbon on pistons.

It sound like a knock and tick on start up on cold mornings. No harm donel

Run 5-30, quiets it down, if your really want to go to all the effort, pull the spark plugs, put Sea Foam down in the holes, let it soak overnight,
cold crank the engine a few times to push the foam out, put the plugs back in
It will smoke like hell. Change the oil soon after, as it may be contaminated.

Should get rid of most of the noise.

    royva,
Did the dealer perform the repair? If so, I would definitely recommend calling them and letting them know of the vibrations that were not previously there. Please keep me updated.

I have a 2011 Silverado and it has the same issues. I have purchased GM vehicles for over 30yrs (This is my last one !!!!!!!!!). The last GM vehicle that I had that gave me excellent service was a 1992 Silverado new $17,000 and I had it almost 10 years, purchased a 2000 Silverado new $30,000 (engine knock and cheap design),2008 Avalance new$34,000 ( cam had to be replaced @ 45,000 miles and when the transmission down shifted it felt like the rear end was moving to the front of the vehicle, 2011 Silverado ext cab new $34,000, the doors rattle, transmission does not allow you to be an easy driver it is either to slow or you have to floor it to make it move. Some of the issues GM has had them for years and they still have not improved the quaility that the customer is looking for since we paid a lot of $$$$$$$$$$ for their product. I have an old 1983 Silverado that my Dad purchased new and he gave it to me and in many ways that old body is better than a new one. I know there are issues with other trucks, but I will not take a chance on GM ever again. Spent over $90,000 in the last 10 years on junk GM vehicles!!!!!!!!!!

I've pretty much had it. I bought a 2010 Sierra Crew cab and within weeks the vibrations started at 65-75 MPH. The tires have been balanced 3-4 times, the alignment keeps going out, all 4 tires were completely ruined at 25k. After several alignments and tire balances, the dealer replaced the front tires with new ones but they put the old fronts on the back. Within a week I ran over a nail and brought it to NTB to fix as the dealer was closed. They said I had severe tire chop. Brought it to discount for a 2nd opinion...same thing. They both said there was something wrong with the front end. The dealer has tried and tried and gave me BS answers like.."its road noise". Truck is in the shop now and has been for 1 week. This is the 3rd GM I've bought in 4 years and I'll be going lemon law if they can't fix. I'm almost ready to got to Ford. I should not have to go through this crap for a year after spending 40k+ on a truck.

    tcritty,

My 2011 GMC Sierra 5.3 6 speed has pulled right since new (April 2011). It also has a very "choppy" ride. Selling Dealer aligned it within weeks of purchase. Still pulled.

At my expense, had a diffrent Dealer rotate and balance the tires within a few months of purchase (that was tough pill to swallow considering the truck was practically brand new).

Recently, had same Dealer align truck. No change. Truck still pulls and has a choppy ride.

District Specialist states "operating as designed!"

I have a 2003 chevy silverado 1500 4x4. Last week my front end started to vibrate/hum at around 60 to 70 mph. I thought that the 4 x 4 axle actuator was engaging the front axles causing the vibration. I pulled it and it wasn't engaged. I noticed gear oil had came out of the vent hose on front differential. Feels like the vibration is effecting power as well, like its causing resistance. I would like to resolve the issue. I'm affraid driving it like this will cause more costly repairs.

    hi folks
well i must say i am a very very dissatisfied with my new truck!!!!!!!! this will likely be my last GM for sure. i wish i had my 2003 GMC back!!! i have owned it from middle of sept and its been in the shop every thursday except 2 thursdays since i have had it. first i took it in for vibration in the front. they have force balanced all the wheels, replaced 1 rim and all 4 tires. the service advisor tells me it is normal???? like WTF is that. i have 3400 miles on it. my 2003 drove like a dream. i am in talks with gm now, but it looks like i will get nothing done?!?!?!?!?! when i took it in last thursday, i complained about a noise in the back end of the truck thinking that the spare tire may have come loose? nope, they called me and said they were replacing the rear axles!!!!! like 3400 miles and it needs new axles!!!!!! my truck is red i am already thinking it should be yellow, A LEMON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i also took in with me last thursday a piece of trim that fell off when i was washing it!!!?!?!?! like WTF is that? there was no glue on it. this truck was built in indiana not mexico, where i could see this being a defect!!
as a new vehicle owner i am VERY VERY DISSAPOINTED with my new truck. i have owned 5 new gmc trucks since i started driving 32 years ago, and i now think i should still listen to my dad when he tells me to drive a ford!!
i am so lost for words as im disgusted about this and that the dealership here in Chambersburg PA, Jennings, are not going to do anything about it but tell me its the nature of the vehicle.
i tend to disagree with them as a $40 k truck should drive flawlessly!!!!!!!!
i also dont care much for the way the 6speed trans holds in gear till it needs to shift. NO WONDER ITS SO HARD ON GAS!!!!!! which doesnt impress me either as my 2003 got 20-25 mpg and i havent got over 16 with this new one and its 8 years newer! being that much newer it should get better gas milage than my old one!!

I AM JUST SO UPSET OVER THIS BULL CRAP OF DEALING WITH A NEW VEHICLE. i bought a new one not to be in the garage and i now have spent more time there with this new truck than my old one....SOMETHING WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE!!!! no wonder GM almost went under...maybe they should have with the junk they are sending out on the market to sucker people in to buy!!
gm should also look into some more invigerating colours for their junk like YELLOW!!!! if you got LEMON,it should be the right colour!!!!

sorry folks...just sour taste in my mouth...LIKE A LEMON.....

dont know what to do now with this hunk of junk!!!

    Neil,
I am sorry to hear how dissatisfied you are with your new truck, and can understand how having a new vehicle in for repairs so frequently is frustrating. It sounds like, from your post, you have contacted Customer Assistance already? Were you provided with a Service Request number? If you would email that to us, or the last 8 digits of your VIN, we would be happy to investigate the situation further.

    hi sarah
well no i dont have a service request number, wasnt given one. if you could help that would be greatly appreciated as i dont think the person handling this has a strong enough personality to deal with the service adviser.
i also would like to mention that i had to borrow a vehicle as one was not given to me or offered. it has been at the dealership for over a week and i havent heard from them at all? the only way i have heard or know anything is from the district specialist. why is this? why hasnt the dealership called me? my last 8 digits are b2309253.
why have i had to borrow a vehicle to get to and from work? and to top it all off, i am driving a 2001 saturn with 180,000 miles on it, which at 45-65 miles an hour has NO VIBRATION WHAT SO EVER. but i am being told that this is normal with the new GMC sierra and it design. well if i had known of this i would not have bought it. i have had several trucks out for test drives since last feburary when i decided to buy a truck. i chose new as the used ones were not in nice shape and the prices were like new, so i bought new. WHAT A MISTAKE this has proven to be. but none of the ones i took for a drive had no vibration at all. and some of these vehicles were GMC,s.
this is POOR service and POOR quality from a company who has been around for so many years. a company who took the publics money to save itself from bankruptcy.
where is the dedication to the public that general motors wants to buy their product...NONE!!!! but expects the public to buy their product and put up with this kind of treatment!!!

Bought a 98 K2500 Silverado 4 years ago cheap as the motor was bad. Had Chevy install a crate stock motor (350), transmission (4L60E) and transfer case (idk). Spent the next two years slowly squaring the mechanics and suspension away.

Just recently had to have Chevy replace their transfer case (which had less than 10,000 miles on it - I didn't drive it much) as the chain was jumping cogs when in 4wd. They also had to repair an oil pan leak and a coolant line leak. Great - all under warranty. They had to pull the front differential to fix the oil leak so due to it's state I got a "new" one from a junkyard and had it put in. I asked them to drive test the tranny because it was "hunting" when it shouldn't in second gear AND it was shifting between 3rd and OD and then back and then back way too much at 35 mph ( cruise control of course). Except when I get it back, less than two miles have been clicked away on the odometer....hmmm. They said it was fine.

Now after all that I have a vibration at 33-38 mph. I can feel it in the steering wheel and in my seat. So I had the wheels balanced, replaced two worn ball joints in the steering linkage, I even put a Contour cam under my truck looking for what the heck was doing it. No luck.

At this point I am a little concerned about the Chev Service and I think I am on my own as they state the truck is fine and it had the vibration before they did anything to it. So I was just racking my brain... Going over the factory chev manuals for 98. And the other day while complaining about all of it, one of my co workers asks me if my drive line was "in phase".

So there you go. Google it. Propeller shaft phasing, drive line phase. It's funny because the Chev factory manual states how important this is. It even has pictures showing all the drive lines and how they should be phased. So why then when I look under my truck, is my drive line 45 degrees off? This is a two piece drive line and it does come apart at the spline but it only goes together one way. So my truck and many, many others roll off the factory floor with out of phase drive lines. W...tf?

So I just got my truck back today from a local drive line place and it feels great. No vibration. They removed my drive line, cut it, phased it, welded it back together, balanced it and reinstalled it. Guy says he does it a lot.

Also on the drive home I noticed the tranny was not shifting back and forth. Could it be that the drive line issue was putting "junk" into the data that shifts the tranny? And the pedal response feels better now. I always felt the truck was a little sluggish but shrugged it off as symptomatic of a 3/4 ton 4x4.

The elliptical (as opposed to perfectly round) rotation of an unbalanced, out of phase drive line robs power and response. I suspect my gas mileage may improve as well. Thanks for reading and I hope this helps some one.

Oh boy, I can tell I'm in for it. Two weeks ago I traded in my 2004 Sierra Crew Cab - man I loved that truck... And bought a new 2011 Sierra Crew Cab. 42 miles on it when I took it off the lot. The next day driving to work I noticed an annoying vibration at 50-55 mph. It's in the seat, pedal, steering wheel. My kids got car sick riding in the back seat... The service guy looked knowingly at the service manager the other day and said to him 'vibration at 50mph'. Now i know why. They tried to tell me it was the tires and I should drive it some more and it will go away. 800 miles on it now two weeks later and it's more noticeable than ever. Dropping it off tomorrow for an 'alignment'. I gotta tell you it sure feels like the tranny or an unbalanced drive shaft... I am more upset than I can express. I have been swindled out of 40k. Won't happen again.

Well, they're keeping my truck for another day or two. It looks like it needs more than just an alignment, but they say there is a fix for it. (There is a GM Tech Bulletin about Suspension Vibration that specifies a fix for this) I sure hope whatever they do takes care of it once and for all... I have to say the service department where I purchased my truck has definitely been helpful so far.

please let us know about this Tech Bulletin. i have a 2010 sierra 1500 with vibration problems. 23000 miles new gm wheels and tires. balanced twice. still vibrates. dealer says it the tire balance.

I also have a 2010 Silverado ext. cab that has 17,000 miles on it. The vibration at all speeds began to occur about 4,000 miles ago. So far the dealership has replaced the rear shocks, the tires, checked alignment, and still no resolution. If there is a TSB about this item I will be more than excited to hear what the solution is. Any type of bump, expansion joint, or deviation in the road will cause the entire truck to jounce from left to right. On the expressway going 70 m.p.h you will experience the same excessive bouncing. A cup of coffee in the center console will shake itself right out. There is no excuse for these defect(s) and I will be glad to hear of some sort of resolve. My dealership is about done with being "participative".

    Greetings:

I have a 2007 Silverado LT 6.0Ltr, 4X4 ( not classic ) I "had" a tinny, obnoxious vibration on acceleration at exactly 1500rpm. As recommended on another website, I went under that truck at the passengers door and located the screen mesh on the exhaust pipe. I moved this screen mesh back and forth for about 15 seconds. Went out for a drive and the vibration is gone. Mmmm....what's up with that. If the vibration returns , I'll try it again.

On my 2010 Silverado under the passenger side the dealership replaced the heat shield because of an improper assembly the shield would rattle.
  • evanewskievanewski Member Posts: 4
I have taken my 2010 Silverado to the dealership once more today to see if the can remedy this situation. As of yet all that we have done is new tires, rear shocks, checked front suspension, steering, driveshaft, and balance of tires. I get the feeling that I am about out of there patience in terms of them willing to look into a problem that they can't seem to find. I have taken them personally in the truck on multiple occassions down the road to have them experience this "jostle" of the entire vehicle as it traverses over bumps or expansion joints in the highway. An up/down motion of the vehicle is normal but when the vehicle wants to shake left and right and cause the entire vehicle to move in such directions, I no longer feel safe to operate. I have driven 4 different Chevrolet Silverados to almost 300,000 miles each and the 2003 that I currently also operate still rides and traverses smoother down the road than the new one. Figure that one out. We also drove a brand new truck off the lot on one occassion to see if the problem that I had was in the new truck. Of course we could not replicate that symptom in the new vehicle and they service technicians complied. Ugh, you know at the end of the day you shouldn't have to do this. Isn't that why I bought a new vehicle in the first place. NO PROBLEMS.....HMMPH. In regards to you opening a service request what information is needed and what more does that do than me returning to the dealership again?
  • gmcustsvcsarahgmcustsvcsarah Member Posts: 1,964
For the service request, we would be working with the dealership towards trying to resolve this concern with your Sierra. To get it started, we would need your name/Edmund's username, contact information (phone and address), the last 8 digits of your VIN and current mileage, and the name of your dealership. Since you've been working with your dealership extensively, your case would be forwarded on to your district specialist.

    Hi evanewski,

    Your quote:

"We also drove a brand new truck off the lot on one occassion to see if the problem that I had was in the new truck."

Wonder why they had you do that if you have a valid complaint about your "warrantied" truck? Sounds like a quick, convenient way to say "see Evan, they all do that so quit complaining!"

Was it the Sales Manager or the service department's idea to "drive a like vehicle"? I'm guessin' it was the GM Dealer Sales Manager.

In addition to other quality issues, my 2011 Sierra's steering pulls right and jumps a bit over bumps. It has since new. I don't care if GM has "run out of patience" with me. I'm going to keep telling them to correct the numerous problems with the new truck.

You're exactly right; why did we buy a new truck?

    My old truck ran better!

The TSB I was referring to is "#PIT3009M: Suspension Vibration Or Frame Beaming At 40-60 MPH." Interestingly, this TSB describes how to test for Frame Beaming (by placing 500 lbs in the bed over the rear axle and seeing if the vibration goes away). More interestingly, if the weight makes the vibration cease, the remedy is to check and upgrade the rear cab mounts to a newer design. Some 2011 models already have the new mounts, mine did not. It seems strange to me that the 'fix' for excessive vibration is to attempt to dampen it in the cab. Doesn't seem like a Root Cause Analysis has been done on this problem (or the root cause is too costly to repair). The dealership also said that three of my tires were out of balance. The service guys were very helpful on this visit, but they were careful to tell me that this is just how that truck rides because of the soft suspension and the off-road tires. Funny, but my 04 GMC crew cab had the same tires and drove smoothly all 172000 miles. Unfortunately I am at 1700 miles and the vibration is still there. I feel it in the seat, the gas pedal and the steering wheel. If I knew that I would have to be in the shop so much with a brand new truck I would have kept my '04 and saved myself 40 grand.

I went back to the dealer for the 5th or 6th time about this and they noted that the body mounts were the "revised" version and that my truck is operating normal in terms of what the technicians have said. I am not satisfied and requested to have the issue "escalated" to GM to move further. I was told that the request will be fulfilled by a GM representative and/or engineer speaking with the technicians to evaluate the situation. I may then receive a call but not too likely if my truck is "operating as normal" in accordance to the technicians that have worked on it. I have taken numerous people in this vehicle and they all agree that something is not right. New tires, new rear shocks, checked alignment, balance, squareness? of truck, and taken two technicians for rides in which they agree that something is awry. Yet after all of these visits, I still have a jostling, jouncing, tramming, uncomfortable, and potentially unsafe vehicle to operate. I really am at wits end and am waiting till the end of this week to see if the GM Representative or Engineer will contact me or the dealer. This is really inexcusable. I have personally had 5 GM vehicles and operated 4 Silverados from 0 miles to well over 260,000 and never had this rattle of the cage. I drive an 2003 silverado that has 202,000 miles on it with front shocks in need of replacement that still goes down the road with better conformity than my 2010 with 18,000 miles. Is this lemon material? I heard that the buyback alternative is a real stickler, yet that can't be worse than what I have right?

Does anyone else have a 2011 gmc 2500 6.0 gas engine where the doors, cab mirrors shake and vibrate? I have taken it to four dealers and they say oh no this is just part of how the truck runs. I had to tell them to check the motor mounts and the service guy said we cant just start checking things?

Ask them to test drive another truck on their lot so that they can show you how ALL the trucks vibrate. Do not let the dealer off so easily.

I have a 2007 GMC Sierra SLE-1, and I'm having a issue with the front end shimming at 55-60 MPH consistantly. It first started at the driverside rear, and now its more or less the whole drivers side. Was in the shop at a GM dealer 2 times and the 3rd time going to be this week. It start with the error code on my EBCM, thinking it was my rear brakes, so they replaced the EBCM, but they never checked the rear brakes. I told them it felt like my tire had a twisted belt, but got no coment back on that. It took them 2 days to put rear brakes on my truck, and their reasoning was, the mechanic didnt know how to install rear brakes with drums.( scarey)

    Hello dam654,

We're sorry to hear that you have had to make so many visits to your dealership for this same rear end noise. If we can check into this situation further, please send us an email at socialmedia@gm.com with more details (including your name and Edmunds username, phone and address, the last 8 of your VIN and current mileage, and the name of your dealership).
