here is the correct web address for the performance figures for the 3.2L I6 engine and 2.2L turbo diesel on the UK website http://www.landrover.com/gb/en/Vehicles/Freelander2/Specifications/Freelander_pe- rformance.htm The mpg is given in Imperial gallons; there are 1.20 US gallons in an Imperial gallon, so you have to divide the UK figures by 1.2 to get the US values. The UK figures appear to me to be more accurate than the US EPA figures. I am hoping that Land Rover will consider bringing over one of the diesel versions in the near future. The automatic diesel gets 32% better mpg in the combined testing according the UK figures compared to the I6. The manual diesel does even better with 50% better overall mpg. With the availability of ultra low sulfur diesel, I think that the modern turbo diesel engines should be able to meet emission specs in the US. Has anybody driven both the diesel and petrol versions of the LR2? Does anybody have any idea if the diesel will make it over here? thanks
I test drove the LR2 last night. The dealer I went to (southern california) ordered 26 and by 8:00 p.m. only had four left (most were preorders), sold 3 that day. Most had only technology package or technology and lighting (not much use for cold weather in so cal). Dealer also said he would order with exact features and colors that I wanted at no extra charge. Also car was EXACTLY MSRP in black with ebony interior and wood trim, and just technology package ($38,600). I may hold out for for black with alpaca interior, and wood trim, plus technology package.
Things I Liked:
It felt like it had a good grip on the road. Navigation wasn't annoying. Very quiet cabin. Beautiful windows/sunroof. Pretty responsive. Great sound system (tech package) Picked up speed well.
Things I didn't Like:
There isn't much wood trim just a small amount under dash- it would look more luxurious with some wood trim on he shifter, doors and steering wheel at least. (There may have been more I didn't notice I was kind of excited).
A lot of buttons on center console- maybe too many, but it does control a lot of stuff so maybe it's worth it.
Although, iPOD does plug directly into stereo system and there is an optional cradle you can buy, you still have to control the iPOD on the iPOD. Mercedes had display and control of iPOD integrated into the stereo system and it could be controlled through the steering wheel.
I want to hear everyone else's test driving experiences if you were able to (I think my dealer got them a bit early). Also I am nervous about buying this car before more info comes out on reliability. Most likely I will wait 3-4 months.
Thanks for the review. If I'm not mistaken in the LR UK website there's an accessory for iPod integration. Not sure how well it works with the stereo. I'll post a link if I can find it.
we have gotten six LR2s in stock. Three of them are sold already.
I really like how the LR2 drives and I would agree with other people who have sait it is the best handling Land Rover.
I am planning to take one across the off road course either tomorrow or monday. Our track was designed to test the limits of the Freelander so the LR2 will be right at its limits as well.
At the dealers today; they seem to be prepping and selling the LR2 already. Today I checked out a Tambora Flame, Stornoway Gray, a White and a Silver. Some were without the tech package and some were with all the options. The orange is a light orange (in sunlight late day), almost a little gold, not nearly as dark as the Sport orange. The white with tan interior is very nice, it's pure snow white. The silver with black had the pixel metallic trim and it's like a satin steel with texture and is very nice; it sits well with the bright metal bezel around the gear shift and the satin metal that is around the console by the terrain response knob (you don't miss the wood).
From a past question there is a double cup holder on the console and behind it a small cubby hole box with no lid, it's about 6x4x4, it's small. The glove box is about 12x4x6 with a flat bottom and velvet trim and seems to have a built in cell phone holder on the right side. I wish the cup holders and the cubby box had rubber lids for a more finished look. I don't like cheap plastic lids with hinges but open tops look like something is missing. This is true especially about the cubby box.
Looking at the LR2 more closely it's very nice; I really like the look of the back end exterior; the squareish style is very Roveresque and the twin pipes are nice. The car sits high and even though the muffler is giagantic it's much better than the old Freelander. Looking at the front end again, it really feels a lot like the old Freelander except for the lights which are very nice and very Range Rover like in style and quality (but not shape).
I think Land Rover had an opportunity to make the LR2 the new "Baby Rover" but opted instead to honor the transition from the Freelander, which is why they still badge it the Freelander 2 in Europe. It makes me wonder if they are going to change the front end to be more like the Sport in a couple of years or if they will leave it alone and come out with a Baby Rover that looks like a small Sport.
Ha that happend on my birthday. That is the second time there has been a gas leak around that area in as many years. In October of 2005 there was a huge gas leak across the street that shut down that whole section of 44 for over a mile.
I visited an LR dealer in Tysons Corner and sat in a new LR2. I liked it a lot! The seats are very comfortable for me, and it was easy to adjust the seats and wheel for a comfortable driving position. I took a lot of time and looked around the vehicle as well. Really nice. The only area I think the vehicle is going to get complaints is rear seat room. I am 5' 10", and when I adjust the seats for my comfort, a person my size only barely fits in the rear seat as far as knee clearance goes. It was not uncomfortable because there is a lot of foot room under the seats and the seat backs are dished out. However, it is not roomy like a CR-V, RAV4, or BMW or Acura. Certainly, it is a matter of degree, but it is the smallest compared to the others.
FYI, as far as specs go, it's a heavy pig. It is by far the heaviest given its dimensions. I don't see why they couldn't put it on a diet and slash a couple of hundred pounds. That's just lazy engineering.
That being said, I really want to take a test drive. The thing looks great and is very comfy inside. The grey color is much better in the flesh compared to the pics online.
I TEST DROVE ONE YESTERDAY.IT IS GREAT. GREAT LOOKER ,ESP IN THE MARVIK BLACK WITH THE ALPACA INTERIOR. WE TOOK UP THE TEST TRACK AT THE DEALER AND HAD IT LEANING ALMOST SO FAR TO THE RIGHT THAT I THUGHT IT WOULD FALL OVER. THIS IS A WILD TEST THAT YOU MUST DO. ALL DEALERS HAVE THE TRACK. INO OTHER VEHICAL, EXCEPT MAYBE HUMMER , COULD DO THIS. YOU JUST NEED TO BE ABLE TO UNDRESTAND THE TRUE TECH THAT GOES INTO THIS LR2. IT HAS EVERYTHING.I ORDERED ONE THAT I WILL HAVE IN ABOUT A WEEK.JUST GO SEE IT. IT IS A SMALLER SPORT.LOOKS GREAT, BETTER IN CERTAIN COLORS.GOOD LUCK. OH, I WAS ABLE TO GET 2000 OFF LIST,YES, THE DEALER IN HOFFMAN ESTATES IL.PUSH YOU CAN GET IT TOO
Anyone have a clue about diesels coming here? I thought they were instituting new clean diesel fuel regulations that would allow more diesels to be imported into this country.
I also read about the Audio Connectivity Module and asked the dealer about it. He seemed to think it was merely a plastic accesory piece that mounted to the front panel of the LR2 so that it "seamlessly integrated" you iPod into the "look" of the vehicle, but not the system.
He could be completely wrong though because they were selling the cars on 3/28/07 (last wednesday) before most dealers had even received them and he explained to me that he had not undergone training for this vehicle yet.
Does anyone know? Has anyone purchased the audio connectivity module with their LR2?
The connnectivity module is not on sale yet and won't be till the end of april at the earliest. Reading from the KIT book...
Integrate iPod Nano, Ipod Video 30 + 60Gb and ipod Photo(Version 4) devices, using steering wheel controls for track selection and volume. It does the same thing the auxiliary input standard on the LR2 does but with better sound quality and ability to using the steering wheel controls to manipulate the iPod.
That is a big no, no delivering cars before their official on sale date. You are not supposed to do that.
I went to the dealer last night and was sadly disapointed. It doesn't look sporty at all. The interior is worlds ahead of the Freelander I owned! The interior was well received. However, the back seat was pretty tight and the push button start had too many steps. They may as well left the key in place. The squarish look just didn't do it for me. It really struck me as an upgraded Ford Escape. I know these are far different vehicles underneath but they look soo much alike. The fuel economy is not good. I was looking forward to it....oh well. I'll wait on the Infiniti EX.
Well aware of the change in MPG calculations. I don't think the RDXs numbers are good either. I'm sure the LR2 is saddled with mechanics that improve its off-road ability but are useless to what many people in this market need. I'm sure that's why its MPG numbers are where they are.
I think the overall shape of these two vehicles are similar. There are obvious things that make them different. I am referring to the overall lines and shape when I say they are similar. Seen better from a side profile, front or rear. I see it. Just my opinion.
This is something I've been wondering, as far as I can tell the MPG ratings are not on the Landrover site anywhere. I've seen it reported at 18/33, but that has to be a mistake on the highway number (is it 18/23 instead?). Someone who knows this for sure, post it up!
Thanks for the info on the iPod. I am getting the LR2 in July so it will be out by then yay!
The dealership I went to was all screwed up (they just opened). When I got there there was nobody around for about 15 minutes, and they didn't seem to know much. So it doesn't surprise me that they did something wrong.
I would agree on the similarity to a Ford Escape, or even the previous generation Honda CR-V. On the other hand, it is a classy looking vehicle, and I prefer the clean straight lines to the curves of say the Tribeca. It is a look that won't get dated down the road. However, having said that, I was dissappointed by several aspects of this vehicle. For one, it does not drive "sporty", which is to say it does not get moving quickly, and when stomping on the accelerator the engine feels like it is working very hard. Of all the new vehicles in the small/mid-sized car based SUV category, this one drives the most like an SUV. That was a dissappointment to me, after watching the video trailers on the website which tout the sporty handling of the LR2. The other big dissappointment was in the rear seat and luggage compartment. Even the small Suzuki Grand Vitara has a more comfortable rear seat. And IMHO, if you are going to have a full size spare, then put it on the back of the car- it just takes up way too much luggage space to put it inside the vehicle. And speaking of the Grand Vitara, with a lift kit http://www.rocky-road.com/grandvitara.html that vehicle would be a better off-road small SUV than the LR2 since it has a low range center diff lock. But I realize very few people will buy an LR2 for off-road use. Still, I am intrigued by the LR2 (or Freelander 2 as it is called elsewhere)with the turbodiesel TD4 and manual transmission. That version gets 50% better gas mileage and I would guess has better acceleration due to the huge amount of torque and the manual transmission. I waited to buy a new vehicle so I could test drive an LR2. After seeing and driving one, I decided the Mitsubishi Outlander fit my needs best. If Land Rover do bring the manual TD4 version over here, I will definitely try one out.
I guess some want more then a car can give. I tested the LR2 and it corners better then my 2006 Volvo s60 sport sedan, is more luxurious and has many more standard features. Yes LR2 is an SUV not a sport sedan but is tighter then any SUV I have ever owned (4). Comparing it to the Ford is like comparing apples to oranges. The Mitsubishi, yes better off road with low range same as xterra but not half the luxury and all the extras are not even available. For me the LR2 is perfect. Off road means going across a median or grassy area. The LR2 will do everything on road better then any car in it's class with Luxury and gets better real world milage per gallon then the others.
I've been doing my research on the LR2. Getting to the pricing section now. I've read that Land Rover does not have a factory holdback with vehicles. Is that true?
On my way to re-lease a new X3, I stopped by the Land Rover dealership...left with a signed contract. Contrary to many of these treads, my dealer was very knowledgeable on this car, had a large inventory, the ride was much smoother than my X3 and the test drive was a hoot. (I couldn't go on the test track though as they have to re-design it to accommodate the lower LR2)
Only 4 minor disappointments: no heated steering wheel, no center console for storage, no integrated garage door opener (assume they'll correct all in next release) and I really wanted the traditional Land Rover green but there is no green to choose from.
Bringing the LR2 to Nantucket soon and can't wait to get it out on the beaches.I don't think low is needed to have some innocent fun as I used to take my X3 on the dunes but had to stay on track - hoping to be a but more adventurous with the LR2...we shall see.
I think for the price, this is a fantastic car/truck/SAV/SUV whatever...it's simply fun.
Went to the NY Auto Show today and walked away with a great 1st impression of the LR2. The cargo and interior passenger space seemed very large for a vehicle this size. I really dig the experior styling in person. Dash materials and leather seemed to be top quality. Great job Land Rover!

I talked to a salesman today who indicated the price would be close to full MSRP. Is anyone getting more reasonable offers? Also, is paying the Dealer Services fee of close to $500 required of all Land Rover purchases. Thanks.
One thing you can do is figure out a good price and focus on the "out the door" price. Let the dealer worry about the line items like the services fee (whatever that is).
Didn't compare features to a Ford. Only the shape. The LR2 will do everything on road better then any car in it's class with Luxury and gets better real world milage per gallon then the others. You really got sold. I think BMW might have quite a bit to say about that claim.
Look at the two vehicles. Look at the shape of the wheel wells/fender flares. Look at where the break is between the front fascia and the fender, gas cap placement, the side profile, the fog light placement, the slope of the A&D pillars, air intake placement, overhang length. Just what I see.
Hello. I am hoping somebody can help me out. I'm interested in the LR2, but one concern I have is about the engine. It's a good-sized engine, but the vehicle is a bit heavy. I'd like to know if the engine can handle the weight of the car. I wil be driving from Sacramento to Lake Tahoe. I'll go from 70 ft above sea level to 8,000 ft in less than two hours.
As you can imagine a small engine in a heavy car is not a good combination under those circumstances. I am not looking at racing up the hill, but I do want to be able to go at a good pace, and be able to pass when there are passing lanes (a lot of the highway is only two lanes).
I have not driven the LR2 or my Volvo S60 out of Florida so I do not have the experience at those heights. But the Volvo S60 has only 208 HP at 3300 lbs and has sport sedan power. More then enough. The LR2 I have only driven a few times but with 230HP at this level has no lag and runs great and the fact that it is a VOLVO engine makes me confident it will preform for you. Many of the test drives I have read about attest this. Good luck.
Thanks for the reply. The S60 has 208HP, but it has 236 lb of torque at 1500 RPM. The LR2 only has 234 at 3200 RPM.
So it has a bit less torque, but weighs an extra 750 lbs. Hmm, I'm a bit concerned. Hopefully (after the initial excitement has passed) I can borrow a loaner for a day.
I picked up my new LR2 yesterday from Land Rover of Dallas. Stornoway gray with Alpaca interior. Tech package, lighting, and cold climate. Got X-Plan pricing.

I read confusing articles.

Audio Connectivity Module
Makes your iPod as comfortable as any passenger by seamlessly integrating it with the audio system and its controls
So it looks like you'll be able to control the iPod from the stereo.

Got lots of reading to do, later.
Solid, peppy, quiet, etc. etc.
Can't wait to pick it up in 2 weeks.

Sorry I just don't see it...
Also keep in mind the LR2 is a 2008 Model so it is using the new 2008 EPA fuel economy figures. It would have gotten 18/25 under the old system.
The 2008 Acura RDX will get some where around 17/21 on the new system when it comes out compared to the 19/23 it gets now.
I think the overall shape of these two vehicles are similar. There are obvious things that make them different. I am referring to the overall lines and shape when I say they are similar. Seen better from a side profile, front or rear. I see it. Just my opinion.

Hopefully we'll get some more action in the Land Rover LR2: Prices Paid & Buying Experiences discussion once more LR2s hit the road. You can also track the True Market Value (currently at MSRP).
Look at the two vehicles. Look at the shape of the wheel wells/fender flares. Look at where the break is between the front fascia and the fender, gas cap placement, the side profile, the fog light placement, the slope of the A&D pillars, air intake placement, overhang length. Just what I see.
Much harsher ride.
Guess it depends on what you want to do with your car.
Selling has nothing to do with it. Live tests do.
