I want to start by saying thanks for taking the time to reply to my message! You were a great help.
I have moved three times in the past year and half and did not get the notice of the recall. When I dropped it off at ford I told them that I heard there was a recall. They told me it would be a $131.00 charge just to put it on the computer.
Two days later they said they fixed it and there was no chrage! It was the Cam Sensor and was covered by Ford. It seems my luck is starting to change. Since this Divorce it seems everything has been bad luck! But maybe this is a sign of things turning! LOL. Thanks greatly Tony!
They was probably thinking the same thing as me in which normally when that Cam Sensor goes out it's out and your dead in the water, thats the first time I have ever heard of it working like your was doing. I know what you mean about Divorces and really glad you was able to have a change of luck and hopefully things keep getting better for you Steve as someone that has been through it twice I know what you are going through.
They never mentioned it. But Yes, it was going on about for 10 days. It was identical 20 minute drive when it acted up each and everytime. Unusual.
Yes on divorces. It has been three years worth of bad luck! So, this was a suprise of no charge to fix the truck! I feel for you going through two of them. I say, "I will never say I do again" but in reality, I probably would if under the correct circumstnces.
When I open the hood of any vehicle, it is like a foreign language to me. I normally do not post on these message boards but figured I would give it a try. Once again, thanks for taking the time to inform me of possible reasons for it acting up. I wish you the best of luck with anything you do in the future! Take care
I've got a 2001 Ford F250 with the 7.3 diesel and I've replaced cam sensors like 2 or 3 times since I've had it. Recently, it started doing the same thing it's done in the past when the cam sensor was bad; it'll either miss out or just cut out and die. Usually it will restart after just a few minutes. I added some Cetane boost and replaced the fuel filter, and it still kept dying on me. So, now I have replaced the cam sensor and it's still doing it. Anybody else had a similar problem or have any ideas?
I am not sure if this is what happened to our truck this weekend, we have an automatic and we were leaving horse camp towing our 5 horse trailer up hill at 7000 ft elevation when my husband shifted from 2nd to drive and he lost all power, the truck was still running but all gauges shut down and the truck would not accelerate at all. We had to have the entire rig towed down the mountain with the horses in the trailer to the tune of $150 an hour, 190 miles from home. It's at the shop owned by the tow company as they were the closest and convinced us they could do the job as they work on thier own fleet of 40 Ford tow trucks. Does this sound like the same problem to you? Thanks
I hope this helps... Our truck experienced the same problems along with the ABS light and Loss of our speedometer. It was the speed module found on the rear axle. It cost $80 to change out. Here we thought we needed a new transmission! That would of cost $4000.
The speed sensor module is what it could be. We also lost all power when towing our 5th wheel. The truck would start, but not run. We could go we discovered in 1st.
hello the engine in my 93 f-350 dually crew cab with 5 speed manual trans acts up over 2500 rpm. It cracks and farts kind of like a gas engine with a bad cap or wires. If I sit in neutral or if i'm on a hill pulling the engine just carrys on above 2500. Has anyone had a similar problem and give me someplace to start looking. I bought a repair manual that covers the F series but does not include the 7.3 can anyone recommend a book that does cover the 7.3 diesel thank you Jay
Hey Jay, It could be a few things, The fuel injector pump could be going the only way to tell is have a Pressure test done on it. Water in the Fuel and / or the glass bowl is full of water ( located on the fire wall near the Brake Booster ), Pluged Injectors ( get some BG Diesel fuel Injector cleaner but you have to run the whole tank threw once you add it in order for it to work right or at least drive 200 miles all at once ). One other thing you can check for is a bad Intake Manifold, Air Filter or some other type of Air leak or Air pump ( I know those can cause problems on those old 7.3's.
Hopefully it's one of those and not your Injector Pump going out.
Thanks Tony, I will change the air filter, fuel filter and add some treatment. I spotted an old cab-over round-nose White truck out along the turnpike in western PA I'll take a ride to check it out that will be about 300 Miles. What about spraying carb cleaner or something of that nature around the intake like is done on gas engines to check for leaks? Jay
That is something I have never tried or had to do on these motors. But I do keep my motor washed off that way when I have to work on them I don't have to deal with the grease & oil. If you did a good cleaning on it and there is a crack on the Intake there will be a Dirt Streak showing the crack and just checking to see if the bolts are lose is pretty easy to do as well. Trying to keep repair simple as to not spend a lot of money on it as those old one's non turbo are not worth much unless you really love that truck I myself would not put a lot of money into it.
Let me know if those are working at all and hopefully it's something simple,
I have two 6.0's, both run very poorly at a cold start. The climate is warm (60-70degrees in a.m.). None of the other 6.0's that I have do this. All of the 7.3's run just great. I have a had all the problems with the 6.0's that everyone else has had as well. But these two trucks run great when warm. They seem to be in a cold weather mode at first start until warm. This is happens if they are started for the first time when the outside air temp is allready 90 -100 degrees.
Almost 1 year to the day when I blew 2 injectors on my brand new 6.4, they (Ford) finally got my truck to stop blowing out black exhaust smoke. No one seemed to know what was wrong until a local dealer decided to replace the particulate filter. Well, to make a long story short, 1 year and a $1800.00 filter (warranty) and my truck is like all the other 2008s. Clean !!!!!!!!!!!
I recently purchased an 05 F-350 w/ 140k miles. If I sit idioling for a few minutes or just stuck in slow moving traffic, once I begin to accelerate, the engine makes a whining noise...I don't seem to be lossing power, and it shifts fine, but the noise will continue until I get up to 40-50 mph...is this normal?
I have already had a lot of work done to this truck, and most recently replaced the fuel pump and regulator.
I have a 2001 F350 7.3 Diesel, auto trans. My problem is when we test drove it and drove it home it ran great, shifted perfect and such. We parked it in the driveway for about a half hour and then got back in it to drive it again and it wouldn't shift. Reverse was okay and first gear. Could not get any other gears to shift. The overdrive light likes to flash also! Does anyone know what the deal is? I am very confused and would it fixed soon! Please help! Thanks!
Hi Tabatha. We have a 2000 F350 7.3 diesel, auto trans, 4x4, 140k miles. It started having the same problem about 6 months ago. After limping it along by starting off in 1st, shifting to 2nd once it got rolling a bit and then into drive, it finally stopped shifting at all last week. Diagnosed yesterday that the pressure plates have failed and a new tranny is in our future. This may not be your problem, but thought it was worth letting you know what we encountered with a similar problem. Good luck!
Hey Tabatha and the other one that needs a new Tranny, Not sure who said it but yes check all your Fuses and the oil in it, an old trick some places do is they will actually put Saw Dust in the Tranny to make them go a little bit longer, it usually will not go much longer but long enough to sell it. So if you see anything on the Dip Stick drain the oil completely and have it tested. Now as far as both you go the shop where I had mine replaced is the best price that I know and they come with a Awesome Torgue Converter by a guy here in Denver. Last year I had got a price from them for people out of town. Now the shipping & price may have gone up but last year for a Rebuilt Tranny with new Torgue Converter was 2,650.00 plus about 200.00 in shipping ( 100.00 each way - You ship yours here and the new back to you ) The Pulling of the old tranny and putting the new back in is actually not that hard to do. If you have basic tools plus a Good 15MM Impact Socket along with being able to make you a 3 feet long Exention for the top Bolts and I found that a ATV Lift ( 59.00 from most auto parts store ) works the best as they have only 2 Rails to lift an ATV and are tranny's not being flat the gap in between the rails lets it work great to R&R the Tranny. Of course if you have Air Tools it goes a lot faster, I pulled my own in under 2 hours and put it back in in about 3 1/2 hours but I did replace the Carrier Bearing at the same time. If you want me to check on price or have them call you just let me know. Even if the price has gone up too 3000.00 total which I don't think it has it would still be a steal as the same tranny from that is built as good as mine to buy from an online shop or your local shop would probably be 5000.00, I know for most good Torgue Converters people are paying almost 1500.00 alone for it.
Hi.I have a 05F350 SD 6.0L. You can crank it up in the morning (or cold) and run it all day. If you turn it of it will not start untill it is cold or you hit it with a shot of ether. Ipr when cold is over 1000 psi. When warmed up 300 psi. Has a P0284 code cyl 8 contribution balance fault. Vehicle has 311000 miles. IPR,ICP,CAM & CRK sensors have been replaced. Oil has been changed every 4000 miles and it has fresh oil. Any help greatly appreciated. Thank you.
just bought a 04 f250 diesel, having problems while driving around town.truck starts to surge and buckle feels like it running out off fuel or needs air, change fuel filter but no luck. any suggestions. thanks in advance.
YOUR ICP NEEDS 500 PSI TO START.UNPLUG ICP SEN THAT WILL DEFAULT TO 2000 IF STARTS PUT NEW ICP ON.MOST LIKELY YOU HAVE HIGH PRESS OIL LEAK .MY GUESS IS THE SNAP TO CONNECT FITTING ON BACK OF HIGH PRESS PUMP.I HAVE SEEN LOTS OF INJECTORS LEAKING FROM TOP.YOUR CYL CONT PROB IS NO HIGH PRESS OIL TO INJECTORS.
I have a 2001 7.3 powerstroke diesel F350. We cannot figure out what is wrong with the truck. I runs great but it blows alot of white smoke out when idling and such. Could it be a cracked ring or what? Some same injectors some say other things, not sure what is the problem. Anyone know or can help with similar situation. Thanks!
Hey Tabatha, There are a few things that will cause this. O- Rings, Fuel & Air Filters, Exhaust blow by, Head Gasket, Yes the Piston Ring Cracked but two that are over looked alot of times and is usually the problem is the Turbo starting to go out and the Valves getting ready to be sucked in or a Valve that is Sticking. What oil are you running in your motor ?
White smoke is unburnt duesel fuel Plugged air intake ? dripping injector (meaning not atomized properly) , maybe try and isolate which cylinder is producing most of the smoke if u can
low compression in a cylinder
start it cold one day and right after starting touch the exhaust manifold on each cylinder to see which ones are not warming as fast as others, is it a systemic or local to one cylinder would help in diagnosis
First let me say that I had been a Ford buyer for the past 15 years. I have never had the problems with a vehicle that I have had with this engine in any vehicle I have owned.
This truck kicked butt the last 4 years I had it. Dealer serviced regularly from DAY ONE - even bought my tires from them too!
This was my first diesel truck and wasn't sure about the vehicle maint required so I let the dealer handle it.
It started in Sept 2008 with 109,000 miles. A coolant leak - I thought it was the thermosat that froze closed and was forcing fluid back through the system somewhere.
But when I got the call from the dealer SEVERAL DAYS LATER, they said that BOTH the EGR and oil coolers needed replacing. This service took 2 weeks to diagnose and perform. $2,300 later I get the truck back.
I drove it home and it sat for 2 days, I get fuel and another stop 100 feet away and it would not start. Crank yes but start no.
For the first time in 30 years I needed a tow. I was embarrased to see my well kept vehicle on a flatbed back to the dealer.
After about 10 days they diagnose the problem as an oil pressure sensor. The injectors were not getting notified that there was enough pressure for them to ignite the fuel. The service required the removal of the turbo - a BIG deal.
OK This one they fix for free after I complained to the Service manager. (They originally asked me for $700+tax) I picked it up on Saturday morning and drove it about 140 HIGHWAY miles. 1 mile from my home it starts to buck and spit and the engine went down to low rpms and about 20 miles per hour. A cloud of thick black smoke came out of the exhaust for 1/2 mile until the engine recovered and acted fine.
I had this problem before with the EGR valve but that service was performed only 7,000 miles before this incident.
So I returned the truck to the dealer Monday morning, got it back Monday evening and drove it over to the GM Dealer and bought a used H3 for a LOT LESS MONEY!
It broke my heart to part with that 2004 Ediie Bauer Excursion, I kept it in great shape but I wasn't about to spend good money on a problem.
FORD better watch out - I thought I would never switch but Found On Road Dead is a reality with this engine.
Don't feel bad, I was one of those Die Hard Ford Fans too. I got rid of a 2003 King Ranch F-350 with the 6.0  I now own a Dodge 3500 Mega Cab with the Cummins Diesel. The Cummins engine is a good one but it was always too loud. Now it is just as quiet as the Ford. The Mega Cab is awesome! It's like going to the "Mega Bar" at a Buffet Resturant. Huge!!
I went to jump start another truck with my 99 F-350, I shut my truck off while I hooked everything up, when I went to start my truck back it just spun over, didnt even try to fire. I checked all the fuses. also there is a new clicking noise while trying to start it and when I turn the key on.It sounds like a relay. It is coming from behind the radio. Any body got any advise.
this may be a shot in the dark, but have you had yor glow plugs checked at all, if those happen to bust off and rattle around in the combustion chamber, they will cause white smoke in the exhaust. if this happens to be the problem, i hope you find out sooner than later, cause pistons arent cheap. if you plugs are good, then you might be on the right track with the unburned fuel idea, you may have to get you injectors serviced.
hate to be the bearer of bad new, that may be a PCM problem, the problem with jump starting with a vehicle, high voltage spikes is a killer to computers, thats why i refuse to jump with my new vehicle. hears hopin that isnt the problem, but check it out.
ok i have an 05 f-250 completely stock besides exaust... anyways i was drivin back from texas to missouri and i was pulling a buddies rav 4 behind me when all of a sudden the temp gauge shoots up so i pull in at a rest stop and as i was doin this the truck just died and would not start after this i pop the hood and look and no coolent in the tank but also no leakes were detected... please help and tell me whats wrong this is my frist diesel and ford and im not likein it at all so far the truck only has 70,000 miles on it and maientence is kept regulary
hey stangcrazed just a little basics first I would recommend even though it was just running check the batteries, make sure you disconnect one pos. terminal or both grounds first. If the batteries check out okay pay attention to the lights in the truck for a dimming effect that follow the clicking behind the dash. If this is happening I would be willing to bet that your smart junction box (fuse panel) is bad inspect it for water intrusion. They are known for that.
hi i have a 2002 ford f350 7.3 powerstroke diesel truck and I dont know but somehow is mixing diesel fuel into my coolant tank can anybody help figure out whats the problem thanks
ive got an 02 7.3 and it starts fairly easily but once i mash on the peddle it misses runs rough then slowly dies. if i put the batt charger on and crank and crak and itll start back and do the same . once it get warmed up tho it runs fine. and it doesnt matter if it 30 outside or 70 like today. ive scrathed my head several days and changed the cam sensor and oil temp sensor. changed fuel filterand dropped the tank and cleaned it. im at a loss for ideas. ive had this truck since 04 .it had 30k on it when i bought it .and now it has 116k and this is the first problem ive had out of it. other than changing the cam sensor at around 70k . im open for any ideas so please help :confuse:
Yes I need help finding the problem with my truck. Here's the story...my dad ownes this truck and its a powerstroke extended cab. Well i am 6'10" and by brother 6'6" so obviously we dont fit in the thing when we need to go somewhere. Dad got a crew cab and this truck sit for about two year's and I finally got it going again. Had it running for about a week now and it started this crap of you can start it and then about 5 minutes pass by and it shut off. Thought it was fuel filter by changed it and still the same thing. I even changed the relay on the fuel injection system and still nothing does anybody have any idea to what is going on my next quess is the computer but i hope that is not the case... PLEASE HELP!!!
The truck is not running out of fuel it just flat out shut off as if someone is in the cabg and turn's the key off but nobody is around to shut it off I have been out in the drive way the last three night untill midnight or later trying to fix this thing please help!
I have not seen another post from you, but if when you start it and it shuts off really quick it normally is the Cam Sensor. Not sure if you truck is covered in it but there was a RECALL on them in the last year. Call your local Ford Dealer and they can run your VIN # and tell you if it's covered.
ok i will call them and see and do you know if it is this will the dealership cover the cost of repair as in labor. Just wondering also my water temp and oil pressure gauge quite working a while back and I was wondering if any had some diagrams on where to locate these items in the engine compartment so i can take the old peices out and put the new in it would be much appreciated
I had the same problem on my '04 F-250. Dealer said the same thing. I don't buy it. If it was the floormat, why hasn't it happened again? Wouldn't the floormat move around and do it again? I have spent nearly $10,000 in repairs in 19 months, on my 4th EGR Cooler. I have an attorney demanding replacement of vehicle. If I was you I would dump that thing while the miles are low. I'm boycotting Ford forever!!!!
They will cover it all, it only takes them about 15 minutes or less to put it in. Also the Oil Sending Unit & Water Temp Gauges could just be a Fuse or could just be a lose Wire. If not the Water is on or around the Water Pump & Radiator and the Oil Sending Unit is going to be usually on the top of the Motor and you are looking for kind of an old School Bell usually about 2 inches high & inch and a half around.
Ok thanks could any tell me to where I could find a diagram of what exactly I need to take off that would be very helpful and also would the cam sensor do that if dirt or grease got on the sensor. :confuse:
I take it your truck was not covered in the Recall of the Cam Sensor. It's between the Crank Pully and the Water Pump. If you are facing your truck it's going to be on the left side. All you need is a 10mm wrench and a Flat Head Screwdriver. Once you take the Bolt out & the cover that holds it in place sometimes the Sensor does not like to come out, so very gently take the screwdriver and pop it lose, all you have to do is get it move, once you done that it will come out. It's best to go get a new one so you know what you are changing out since you have never done one. They are really easy and I have changed so many I can do it in 3 minutes, lol.
