    I hope someone can help me?First sorry about my bad enlish,but i am from Austria.
    I have a Dodge Ram 1500 5.9 Bj 97 2WD with 63000miles.The transmission called 46RE i think.
    Now my problem is that he shift how he want.He shift up and down every time and in all gears.I drive on,it works,he shift in the second gear it works sometimes,he shift in third gear it works sometimes and sometimes he shift in the second or first back and sometimes in neutral i think.I drive with the o/d and make kick down and he shift down normalbut sometimes the engine turn high without a gear and than with one and than without one,i hope you understand what i mean?If i drive with manual first and second gear it will works good,also the engine brake works good and i have no sleeping every where.so my problem is that he change the gears how he want and its be not nice,the engine turns up and down every time and i will not be realy faster.An other time he shifts normal.So i doesnt think that i have brocken bands or stuff because i can shift the gears manual without problems.

    After some research I have found that those with code P1762 have delayed shifting issues. Others have had the code come up after tranny flush and/or fluid spill. Here is a pic of where the solenoid and sensor are on a Jeep, although they say parts are in the same place on a Ram. Keep in mind that my knowledge of trannys is limited and hopefully trucks are the same as a Jeep.

    No,its a 46RE tranny.But did someone have the same troubles or do someone know what i should do?I would make so much,but i dont know if its work and so i lost the time with the wrong repairs.Yesterday i got the information thats my tranny was a changet tranny.so i have only 20000 miles on it.So what can i do?Change the oil with filter,clean the Valves,cleane the cooler????I dont know.Doday i will drive to a crysler store and i hope they have a computer that he can read out my tranny.thanks :sick:

    I am looking at a 2004 Dodge diesel 3/4 ton pickup with 85K, auto tranny. This should be the 48RE, if it is, has there been any problems with it and if so what?

    Hello,

    I have a 95 3/4 ton ram. I've owned it for 5 years, it has slowly lost power over the past two years. I used to tow a 28' travel trailer but now would be a struggle to haul a load of fire wood in bed with no trailer. the gas mileage has dropped to below 9mpg. I have replace the plugs wires cap and rotor, hollowed out the converter. cleaned injection system, I have no clue where to go next. truck idles and revs great but once you put it in gear pressing the gas pedal is like stepping on a wet tissue box, there is no real throttle response and the truck takes a very long time to come up to speed hills or flat. I thought maybe converter but don't know how to check this. any help would be great

    The first thing I would do is a compression test. Remove all spark plugs, block the throttle wide open and remove high tension wire from the coil. turn each cylinder over at least 4 times. A good cylinder will build pressure quickly. Building pressure slowly indicates possible ring problems (if this happens squirt some oil in the cylinder and repeat the test. If pressure improves, suspect the rings) If pressure does not improve, suspect the valves. If two adjacent cylinders have low pressure, suspect the head gasket (oil or coolant in the cylinders will confirm this).
    V6 & V8= 100 psi minimum, no more than 40 psi variation

    corkscrew I have already checked the compression about 120-130 in all cylinders. When I rev the engine up in park the engine sounds great even at high rpm no smoke or misses. Just can't seem to get it to run good when actually driving the truck. any other ideas

    Check the coil: I need to know the brand name to give you the resistance values, Diamond or Toyodenso
    Also check the fuel filter, transmission fluid level and check to see if the brakes are binding (does it roll downhill easily)

    On a 95 2500 you probably have the 46RH tranny. Note the paragraph under " automatic transmission band adjustment" Clutches play an important part in these transmissions.

    coil doesn't have any info on it, trans fluid is full changed it two months ago fuel filter is in the tank and not serviceable so I could not check that. Put the truck on the lift last night and had 4 wheels off brakes are not dragging. I was thinking more like torque converter but dont know how to check it. It has a mopar rebuilt trans in it now but I don't know when it was put in.

    No no check lights and no codes I'm going to try the trans bands again I adjusted them 12,000 miles ago but it wouldn't hurt to check again

    I have a 2005 2500 with 5.9 cummins. Over the last several months it has become impossible to get it out of park when started in the morning. It acts as if there is a sensor that will not let you shift it until the engine has idled for several minutes (5-10). I have ask other local owners and they have not had the problem. The truck has 150,000 miles on it and did not do this when it was new.

    my dads 96' dodge ram revs up but doesn't shift, and sometimes even cuts off when he slows down and lets off the accelerator. What could be going on??? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

    Just bought the truck 18 months ago. I have towed, long hauled, pulled semis out of interstate medians. Had no problems. However, about 2 months ago the tranny started getting more difficult to drop into overdrive and achieve lockup, when i first bought it it would drop in around 45 - 50 mph, now i have to be going 60 downhill to get it to go into overdrive. Took it to trans shop, road tested and road tested, computer diagnostic, etc. The only thing that showed up was a command from the PCM telling the tranny to drop out of overdrive; not an error command just a regular command. THE PROBLEM is the PCM shouldnt be doing this, not as a regular command.

    To compound the problem i added 150+hp (above stock) to the motor, cant even use 1/4 throttle. Afraid to melt transmission then my work truck will be down for weeks. I want to build a tranny to hold the added power. However, would like to figure out how to fix the overdrive problem before i start throwing money away.

    ANY IDEAS, HINTS, ADDVICE is welcome!

    have 2500 4+4 2006 mega cab deisel. 29th of feb we were going to the dunes. left from phx. to yuma pulling a 23 ft. toy hlr.just under 200 miles.as entering yuma the temp lt. came on, pulled over and shut it off within minutes.checked fluids,everything was good.the fluid read about an inch higher than it shoud have no smell and no foaming.nothing smelled burnt.called dealer they told me to drive it worst case would have to pull it to dealership if we didnt make it.started it up ,no light,seemed fine.turned aroundand as lving a parking lot going up hill tranny started to slip.backed back down hill in ntrl stoped put it in dr.nothing at first then it kicked into gear was able to get back into p.lot.just got it where i needed to be and there was no rev. or drive. after about 20 min started it and it hade dr. and rev. had it towed to dlship. w/ochecking only a visual inspection they sai.d trny was shot and was not covered under warranty due to a banks programer.trucck has 30,000 mls.i never have used the programer due to calibration of tranny it kept saying tranny was slipping.i pulled the trailor in stock because ipulled fuse out of programmer until ihad time to call banks and go over everything.told dealer that and they said to bad.my dealer told me ther woud be no problem w/warranty as long as problems wernt caused by programmer.icant get dealer to even look at it to find the cause .problem is i dont even know if ieven need a new tranny because they wont even check into anything

    Take it to an amaco transmission shop, it will cost 75 bucks for them to road test, visually inspect and if that yields no results they will tear it apart and find the problem. Once they take it apart they will tell u what is wrong, if it is too expensive, and you would rather replace with new aftermarket tranny, they will reassemble and all you are out is 75 bucks.

    I agree. AAMCO is the way to go. I have had only fair, honest service from AAMCO. You don't stay around so long as a company by screwing over customers. I'm sure someone had bad service there, but my experience has only been positive. They recently charged me nothing to check out an engine warning light not too long ago.
    They also do all kinds of auto work, not just transmissions.

    My 02 4x4 dodge 5.9 Automatic Wont shift into 1st when come to a stopngo situation it then shift into first when i give it more gas, but this happens very slowly

    Sounds like your torque converter, but may be even simpler than that. My 97 Ram automatic would shift into gear then when i stopped it would fall out of gear. The seal between the transfer case and tranny could be bad. It was on mine. Happened in the middle of the work week, i dropped it off at Amaco Transmissions in Col, OH. It was fixed and in my posession by noon that day, and only cost 200 bucks, they had to pull tranny and transfer case to fix. i figured for the money it was easier to let them do it. hope this helps

    when I first start truck the trans shifts well. when I come to a stop and go situation it seems it won't go back in low gear. Feels like the brakes are hanging up. If I stop and drop the shifter all the way in 1 and start there it does great. Just does it when Ileave it in drive.

    my torque converter sometimes locks up fine and pulls fine, sometimes wont lock up at all, and i have to let out on the throttle to let o.d. [non-permissible content removed] in, sometimes it fades in and out going down the highway , and sometimes shutters during lockup. i have replaced all solenoids in tranny, i have also replaced the brakelight switch,the output shaft speed sensor, tried a different pcm and checked all plugs tha i can see. i have not traced wiring from pcm to tranny . please help. thanks, DOBBER72

    I have a 06 Ram 1500 ran fine went out to start put into gear and didnt move in any gear, Check engin light came on fluid not burnt any ideas or hints on what it might be?

    I have a 1500 Ram Hemi Thunder Road edition. Mine did the same thing about two weeks after I bought it. It had just turned cold. When I went to back out of the drive it wouldn't move. I put it back in park then reverse and it took about 3 seconds and it kicked in. I took it to my local dealer where I bought it and he showed me a service bulletin that basically states the the torque converter will drain after sitting for a while especially when it turns cold causing the transmission not to go in gear until the pump gets the fluid back to the converter. He told me to place it in neutral after I start it because the pump won't kick in wit it in park. Pretty shotty fix I say but it still works fine. Hope that this helps you out.

    very true indeed..all the old transmissions were the same way,and it wasnt common knowledge back then even..
    yor best bet,and this means ALL of you dodge guys,is to let the truck warm up in neutral,because as said,the pump wont flow in park.

    speaking of cold,the other day i fired up my 97,and the front seal? i think blew out..its pouring tranny fluid out between the block n trans..am removing motor today and installing it in other 97,as the old girl has earned the rest...bought it for 230 bucks,and drove it over 30-000 miles.

    wondering if transmission is still good,ie,just needing a seal,or was there another reason it blew?

    I have a 2000 cummings. I drove it about 15 miles to the store. When I come out of the store and start it up, the transmission wouldn't shift out of first gear. After driving 1/4 mile and shifting from neutral to drive and 2nd to drive, accelerating to 2000rpm it eventually shifted and worked fine for 2 months. Because of diesel fuel $$ I have been driving my other truck for the last 3 weeks. Today when I drove my the 2500 truck again it wouldn't shift out of first. I drove it about 2 miles hoping to get it working again, but it never did. Any idea what it might be? Any idea how to fix it?

    First thing o check would be the fluid level... if it's low, top it off and see how it performs. If you haven't had the trans serviced in a while (at least 15,000 miles or 2 years), have a full service done - fluid change, new filter and pan gasket, screen cleaning, band adjustment. If after all that, it still acts up, then you should check for a bad throttle position sensor and see if any diagnostic codes have occurred.

    i have a 97 ram sport 1500 360 motor, the problem is it would only do it in reverse at first when it was cold out, it would make a loud whining noise and be like it didn't wanna move until you rev' ed it up then it would engage and you could back up, but once it warmed up it wouldn't do it, until about a month ago it started to do it in all gears and now it will only inch forward and backwards, is my tranny shot or is something i can fix? :sick:

    I HAVE A 3500 2003 DODGE IT DOES THE SAME THING BUT IT WILL NOT DO IT TILL IT GETS WARM. I HAVE HAD THE TRANS NEW SILNOLDS NEW FLUIDS BUT NO HELP. TRANS SHOP DOES NOT KNOW.ENEY HELP;;;

    go to suncoast transmission online, click on the dodge cummins at the top left of the page. Then go to the valve bodies link, under there you will find your model trucka and tranny. They have designed valve bodies that feed your torque converter and pump fluid in park. Cost vary, usually under 700 bucks and all the way down to 400. Hope it helps

    is it still pulling strong in that gear or does it act like it isnt getting any fuel/ power? i lost power in my 97 ram, wouldnt shift properly, felt like it had no power. Changed fuel filter and worked perfectly. Looked like it had been dropped in a damn grease barrel.

    I installed a trans in my 99 ram p/u and the thing works fine for the first 2 miles and the i get a trans temp light on, and the o/d kicks off. Can anyone tell me what one of the sensors is for the trans temp. My old transmission did not heat up at all.

    HI! Do you have any pictures of were the overdrive solenoid is on the 46re trans, and the temp solenoid. My trans is overheating and my overdrive kicks off when the fluid gets hot. I cant find any pictures of were, and what all the plugs do on my trans. Thanks!

    u could try a handbook on your model truck. Haynes carries a large number of instruction books, that are written during a tear down and rebuild of the vehicle. I have one for my 97 ram and it covers all engine types available that year as well as trannies. It is a necessity for the do-it-yourself mechanic. Low cost as well, think i picked mine up for less than 20 bucks. i would check your local parts store and if they dont have it, try "Haynes.com". You should be able to find one there. Good luck

    I have an '04.5 2500 5.9 cummins myself. 75,000 mi. with a flashpack tuner and no problems yet! Knock on wood LOL. It's my understanding that the 48re trans. has been "beefed up" by chrysler or MB or who the heck ever makes the things now to put up with he extra power from the 325hp motor. Great truck! no complaints!!

    PS anyone with 48re problems?

    I have a 97 ram 1500 the trans mission won't shift out of 1st gear most of the time if it does then it rarley goes into 3rd when it does run it drops out of gear and the rpms go to 4-5k since the problem started ive replaced the fluid the filter the governer pressure switch and solenoid. any suggestions?

    I just bought this truck in Nebraska, and drove it all the way back to Idaho with no problems. I did tow a car back. Once home and no trailer under WOT (wide open throttle) the truck will not shift. At about 50-55 mph and 5-5500 rpm the truck will not shift unless you lift of the acc. The truck has to be warmer up to create this problem. I took it to a dodge dealer in Idaho, and they serviced the trans. problem is still happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

    I have a 94 Dodge Ram 1500 4WD 5.9 liter engine, V8. In January I began having problems with it. It started up with needing a simple tune up. I knew something was still wrong. It was slipping when it would shift. A friend of the family worked for Chrysler for awhile and said I needed a new tranny.
    We ended up rebuilding it. Yesterday they put the tranny back in. Took it for a test drive and it ran great. Went back to the garage to fix a minor problem with the wiper blades. After that they were taking it on its final test drive, and to put some gas in it before driving it out to me, while checking to make sure everything shifted correctly something went wrong. He got it up to second gear, let off the gas so it would shift to first, laid on the gas again, and nothing happened. He said it was essentially, in neutral. We replaced everything on the tranny including the torque converter and cooling system. We are stumped. I've been without the truck for 2 months now and in that time I managed to kill a car i was borrowing from my uncle by cracking the head and the engine block. Not to mention in January the car accident i was in (i was the passenger) immediately after towing my truck, totalling my mom's car. I've been able to borrow her new car but she's starting a new job. So now we're scrambling to get my truck working because i need to be able to get to work, school, and various other places. Any ideas everyone has would be much appreciated.. we're lost!

    try this
    cut the Tranny lines out by where they mount at the radiator and add a cooling unit.
    a Good one

    be Sure to cut it where the Factory RESTRICTOR bushing was/is inside the factory line

    theres some sort of bushing that restricts the flow to heat the tranny fluid up quicker...this usually clogs up high mileage...get rid of it.

    then unplug the battery for awhile,i do it overnite.
    rehook it up,start it let it warm up in neutral,and drive the truck while Manually shifting it for awhile,then try normally driving left in D.

    i had this problem too,the magical mystery will it work today transmission..the above worked

    when the truck finally died,it had 310 tho miles :D

    Well I know that we did replace the cooling system for the tranny, so I'm not sure about that. They did say that for some reason it's not pumping fluid anymore. Most people that we've heard from said it would most likely be the torque converter, even though we replaced that.

    Just changed motor and transmission. motor was a plug n play, runs great. the transmission came from somewhere else and worked fine for about 100 miles and started to go in and out of drive. now it lets me in reverse when i dont start it for a couple of days, but does not go into drive. after i try drive then it wont even go into reverse, its as if i lost the pump. the transmission still feels like it wants to work, but cant. question to you is , if the torque converter is not all the way in, will the truck still move? my cousin put the tranny in for me but cant remember if he had the torque converter all the way in. i dont want to replace tranny if i dont have to. every one i talk to wants to put a new tranny in, but i dont think its broke. when i do get it moving it wants to go. just baffled, do you have any suggestions?

    Well.. we found the problem. The torque converter was not properly put in.. major mistake was made. It's going to cost about $300. It sucks, but at least we know what is wrong.

    Honestly, that sounds like the same thing that happened to my truck. Yes, the torque converter does have to be in all of the way, but also, it has to be put in the right way. Mine wasn't put in correctly. Chances are your torque converter and pump are both toasted. That's my opinon, can't guarantee anything. By the way, if that is the problem, and your pump is not running, DO NOT RUN YOUR TRUCK AT ALL. Even in neutral your tranny is running and if your pump is dead you're not getting fluid, you could kill your tranny.

    I have noticed in the last two to three weeks that my overdrive was not kicking in. I have 61,000 miles on my 2500 quad cab cummins. I also noticed that the cruse did not work. My OD light comes on and off with the button so I have no issues with anything electrical. I was due for my transmission service and since I was not traveling over 50 mph to work it was not an issue except reduced fuel milage, I waited until today to get all the transmission service and adjust bands from the dealer 125.00. I had other stuff done as well but since I did not mention the probelm I thought I would seee if they caught a problem. Not a chance. After reading some posts I disconnected the battery neg first. did nothing I also thought that would mess up my radio but it did not. I have found that there is quite a bit of discussion about the TPS and electrical signal noise. Wher is that located and has anyone found the real problem with these seemingly frequent issues?
