    I wonder how the markets would react to an actual competent responsible leader. It's had some good times under bad leadership (along with bad times).

    It's sad that I personally loathe Trump's mannerisms, but when I look at him vs the pairings in the last election...he doesn't seem as bad. You are right indeed, it is a sign of how the system has decayed, and it is dangerous.

    I see no good reason to take profits at this point. As I stated before, I am of the opinion that Apple's earnings reports this year will be astonishingly great to the market. Yes, in back of my mind, I have a bit of a concern about a parts problem from Japan, but it sounds to me like Apple will be able to meet the demand for zillions of iPads in time. I do wish the Nuclear crisis in Japan would be resolved in a positive way, but I don't have a good feeling about it.

    As we all stated, if something horrible were to happen to Steve Jobs, that would result in an instantly big sell-off, but ultimately, AAPL will still do great.

    Knowing TM, and how he fears the market right now, he probably already took profits today :D .

    I'll probably wait until next week to do some pruning or pull weeds, if necessary. Overall, I love my portfolio's diverse blend of stocks. With only minimum exception, my intention and approach here is not day-trading... I am investing longer term... no profit-taking for me... Let it ride!

    I continue to be so impressed with the strength of this market. Makes me even more bullish than ever! Have no fear!

    Edit: Let me stress again that this is not an AAPL event for me. I have 36 different stocks and 6 funds... I am very impressed with some of them. AAPL performance will have a reasonably positive impact on my portfolio, but at this point there are better performers.

    I can't wait for the catalyst that will send this market to the moon. I expect to put more $$ into the market after the next dip.

    2nd Edit: Apple's iPad2 has WiFi connection problems... story is developing. The issue appears to be serious enough to raise some concerns.

    Don't let it wreck your weekend. Apple will still sell the iPad2 like crazy. Remember the iPhone antenna issue? It had no negative impact on sales. Apple is practically unstoppable. Relax!

    Strange news coming out of Apple today…seems that reports are coming in about iPad 2 models that are having a tough time getting a connection up to wi-fi. The odd part is that the original iPads had a comparable problem, according to reports, so that makes this instance especially unusual.

    Maybe Apple will give those with a defective iPad a free pink leather case. :shades:

    It's funny... no matter how messed up the Apple products are, their sex-appeal is just too seductive for consumers to resist.

    I say this as I am using my HTC EVO 4G. I am enjoying blazing fast 4G speed (NOT available on iPhone) and I can generate a WiFi signal for anyone around me (including myself, if I was using a wireless notebook or netbook). (Also NOT available on iPhone.) And, there are other significant shortcomings to the Apple product... but it sells like crazy! It is soooo much about the gorgeous design, the current trend, and iTunes and App's that makes the Apple product desireable even with its faults and limitations.

    But... it does show that even the almighty Apple makes serious mistakes, has significant limitations, and makes stupid compromises. THAT fact is what reveals that Apple is vulnerable... and in the end, they may just tragically shoot themselves in the foot... instead of being damaged by any competition. Who knows?

    Regardless, I have ENORMOUS confidence in Apple's ability to design, build, and sell highly-desireable products. I believe in the company and its success.

    OK, I've been reading that forum. It does not sound like it is a serious problem. Most users are indicating they have no problem with WiFi. Some think they have a bad router. Whatever! Apple will fix it if there is a problem.

    I think I will now fix myself a Manhatten on the rocks and get ready for a Greek dinner party at our house. The main course is Iowa Chops. They are awesome. A great way to start the weekend.

    From a completely layman's perspective, I have been so beat up with Microsoft and Dell, and the dis-honest service people that I would never again have any product that has anything to do with those companies...even for free..

    I have to occasionally mess with my wife`s Dell, and it just brings back bad memories.......I think that apple just has a hands down better product and sales experience-- as far as I am concerned--, and apparently I am not the only one....In more than a year I have not had any problems what so ever.....A great company, and just imagine if they were to do in T V what they have done in computers....a bonanza....Tony

    Well, Tony, my wife and I both have Dell laptops. At times, they are a pain having to deal with spam, viruses, etc. It is hard to break the habit and switch to Apple. But I love the iPad and I plan to purchase the iPad2 whenever the time comes that I don't have to wait in line for hours.

    cdpinhead hit the nail on the head about the Iowa chop. We just got finished with an awesome dinner and I sneaked over to the computer for a minute. The chops, directly from right here in IA, were delicious. So were the various Greek appetizers and deserts. My Manhatten on the Rocks made me forget about the possible WiFi problem with the iPad2 :) .

    About three years ago, I bought my daughter a Dell laptop computer. It was one of their best models, and I loaded it up with everything on the build-your-own configurator... extra fast processor, extra RAM, larger hard drive, best graphics card, best wireless connectivity, bluetooth, travel mouse, and plenty of productivity software. I really bit the bullet for my daughter on that laptop, and I was expecting her to get years of enjoyment from it. Seemed like a reasonable idea.

    Well, it wasn't long before the troubles began, and the display wouldn't work, and then the graphics card went bad, and then the troubles just continued, and finally Dell replaced almost all the guts on the thing. Utlimately, it turned out the product went under a recall, and they could never really get it working like it ought to, but it didn't matter any more... because I bought her an Apple MacBook Pro. WOW! What a terrific trouble-free machine. There was absolutely no comparison whatsoever... light years apart.

    It was like the difference between a Yugo and a Mercedes Benz!

    Tag - Did your dauughter put Norton's or any anti-virus software on the Mac? I bought my son a mac pro and it's also great but we have not put any anti-virus software on it. It seems most people d'ont but with Apple's great success you hav to expect hackers to start some day.

    I plan on buying myself a mac pro after the new operating system comes out this summer and I'll probably go to the high end 17" one as I rarely travel on planes with my laptop.

    The difference in vulnerability between Microsoft's and Apple's operating systems is why we have seen a constant stream of viruses on the "Bill Gates OS" and hardly any on "Steve Jobs' OS".

    Those operating system codes and cores are very different, and the hackers and virus-writers can have a field day with Windows.

    The difference in popularity between Gates and Jobs is certainly noteworthy, but not the primary reason for viruses targeted at Windows.

    Also, the percentage of Windows computers out in the world is indeed much, much higher, but surprisingly not the primary reason. Again, it's primarily due to the very significant difference in vulnerability... Windows being terribly more vulnerable.

    In any event, I never operate my own personal or business computers without anti-virus and security software. I can't take the risk.

    My daughter's computer has never contained what I consider critical data, although when she goes to college this fall I think her homework and documents should be protected.

    Len, I have seen the 17" MacBook Pro, and just be aware that it borderlines on being too large. The 13" and especially the 15" models are now available with MORE than enough power and features to make them the better choice most of the time. If you need screen real estate, the iMac is the killer deal at Apple... monster specifications at a giveaway price, especially when compared to the MacBooks... perfect elegant, sexy, and powerful machine for any desk. I might get one after this summer, and use a MacBook Air when I need portability.

    Has Spring made its appearance there in New Jersey yet?

    Thanks for the advice. Maybe the best way to go is the Imac and the smaller laptop later. I like a lot of screen real estate. But I'm going to wait for the new operating system. My son also has no vulnerability on his laptop - essentially college and games. I love the Mac pro display.

    IN NJ it's cold now - down to 22 this morning and we had some great weather with 60's and 70's in March but it's now a more winty cold pattern. We had snow this week but in late March it melts right away.

    Two of my kids have 'em & just love 'em to death...no problems whatsoever!! Whenever I upgrade...it'll be to an Apple product as my Compaq laptop is o k for the little surfing I do, it already had to be looked at by a computer guy my wife hired to check our desk & laptops...they do work so much better know, but in the future, only want drama free products in my house...period!

    I bought a loaded HP laptop 3 years ago - about 18 months into it, there was a motherboard-video card issue, and it died. I could have had it fixed for $300 only to break again, or just move on. I did the latter. Apparently it wasn't an HP defect but something in the board that failed on a lot of them - but no responsibility was taken. So I moved to a different brand, smooth sailing from there.

    Actually there was a recall for motherboards having the video go dark. Something about overheating in the built-in video area of the boards for the Nvidia video part. HP repaired free. Sent FedEx box next day, picked up on call, had computer back in about 7 days. Then Later I saw a class action suit in one of my emails saying there was a replacement for a free HP laptop under certain conditions.

    Once you get to the breaking point, you will be willing to go through the new learning curve with apple....
    ..My real point was that there are a hoard of people like me, that have, and will continue to think of nothing but apple.....The stock has gone up more than fifty percent since I purchased the apple mac, and there are a lot of smart people working with Steve Jobs....
    I look forward to a more seamless way to watch tv, and just the other day I was investigating the new tivo recorder, and wondering about netflix, and the different cable providers, and tv`s, and speakers etc...Just think how many millions of people would purchase something that simplified that process, as we trust apple.....Trust is a pivotal word.....Tony ps and just the comments from others on our board seems to touch on what a pain the other OS have been.....Only thing you need worry about is a correction....It`l come and pass....

    I had a DV9700 series machine, pretty highly equipped, bought new early in 08. In late 09 it started acting weird - turning itself off, not booting up, odd display issues, etc. I took it in to a local indy shop (repair only, no sales) - they said they had seen dozens of the same issue. The guy told me I could have it fixed for like $300, but the issue would probably come back. I have read online that this issue (connected to some model of GeForce card) was not handled like that by HP. So I said to hell with it, bought a midrange Toshiba, sold the HP for parts, and all was well - 16 months later it is virtually perfect.

    Apple has a small but devoted group of followers. Their best move was giving them away to college students early on. Now those people are making the decisions. My biggest complaint is higher cost for comparable power. And not being an open architecture. IBM and MSDOS kicked Apple's butt by offering an open system to all. Last I checked MS Windows machines are still 95% of the market. Apple is part of the 5%. My My dream machine was always a Sun Microsystems Unix machine. They were the leading edge for many years. I lost interest when the crazy Oracle character bought Sun out. BP went out and bought Macs for all their engineers up in Alaska. Within less than a year they were all sitting in the storage rooms. They could not talk to the rest of the company. I know that is somewhat resolved. It is still not easy to integrate the two systems. Until Apple integrates with Windows computers seamlessly they will be a niche player. I wonder if the iPad2 WiFi issue is not related.

    Her's a new frustration that's pushing me more toward Apple. On a windows 7, 64 bit laptop, this one's my daughters, I cannot install itunes. This is the first time I ever had the problem and I have itunes on all my other computers. I can download and save it, which I did, but in doing the install the program aborts and I get a message that "this package cannot be opened, verify that the package exists". I'm running it as the admin, windows installer works well for other installations and it's Apple's latest download in 64 bit. Did a search and it seems others have this problem too.

    But yours is not in the numbers listed. It was built during the right time period for the Nvidia problem.

    HP repaired one for a client of mine. FedEx'd a box to her, etc.

    HP replaced a printer I just put into service after a few days when the intake roller wouldn't intake.-- No refurbs to ship so they gave me retail credit at the HP online store to spent on anything: I didn't have to buy another printer.

    But their business model slipped up in your example.

    That is part of the integration I was alluding to. I would say it is up to Apple to come up with the software that works with each new version of Windows. I can tell you I am not a big fan of Windows Vista or Win7. I don't have an iPod so do not use iTunes. I would imagine there is an application that will work with Win7. Apple seems to have issues with more than just Microsoft. Adobe Flash comes to mind. Will it slow the explosion of Apple sales? Probably not. I may even come over one day. It took me a while to give up my Atari and Amiga back in the late 1980s.

    It works with win7 on my desktop. Most folks have no problem but a few get this message and it has to be something with individual PC's not the synoptic set-up of the download.

    That HP was the most expensive computer I ever personally bought. No more upper spec machines for me - the benefit doesn't match the cost.

    I also loathed the keyboard on that thing (loud and my typing style dislodged keys) and it was Vista...so I'm really better off now.

    I never paid a lot of attention to stocks as a percentage of GDP but this story, which has some great data in it re the current market vs recoveries of the past, notes key percentages of GDP for buying and selling. If it's right than we are nearing the top of the market as stocks are currently 95% of GDP and 110% is the traditional sell point.

    Speaking of Apple - a friend of mine has a friend who lives in South America, and wants a (white) ipad. As they are insanely expensive there, he wants it bought here and delivered to him. My friend lives in Georgia, not in the most technologically adept place, so he had me look today as I was out anyway, and I live in an affluent techie area. I went to the Apple store immediately after they opened - already several dozen people in there playing. No non-Verizon ipads in stock, the workers had no clue when a white one would be in - you have to get there at 9am every day and hope to get lucky. Some very well planned supply-demand stuff going on.

    Also looked around the mall, which admittedly is the nicest in the entire region. All I can say is, what recession? It's obviously not hitting some income groups. Chatted for awhile with a salesman at a jewelry store, looking over IWCs (I wore mine)...he says they sold 4 last week alone. Crazy.

    Wife's on her 4th HP 8500 Plus printer now...they sent two "refurbished" ones & finally a brand new one & she's still having issues. All I can say is stay away from HP printers, as they still refuse to give us a refund. Too bad there ain't no lemon law for printers!

    I also had major issues with HP printers in the past. On the last one I owned, the top got stuck on the open position. It just would not close. Finally, I pressed hard enough and of course the damn thing broke at the hinges. Junk!. I then purchased a rather high end model Lexmark (copier, printer, fax, scanner). I am quite pleased with it.

    Canon high-end line of standard home printers, photo printers, and all-in-one printers w/ fax, scan, and copy functions, is incredibly reliable and feature-rich... and the color reproduction in terms of printing, copying, and scanning is best in the industry for accuracy. I would recommend Canon as the hands-down very best choice for quality home printing, scanning and copying.

    (When only black and white printing is what matters... then the cheapest machine with the cheapest ink is typically the best choice.)

    Commercial products are a whole different story. Owning a commercial printing and graphics design company for thirty years has given me the edge. Xerox is the king (more like God) in commercial digital reproduction, and taking it a big step further, Heidelberg is without a doubt the finest one the planet when it comes to commercial lithographic printing.

    For my kids, that print huge amounts of homework and assignments, I bought a $90 brother laser B/W printer. The cartridge lasted since December 15th and the replacement is $44 and it's networked for both of the the sweet little girls!

    The HP color printer went through the 2 toner cartridges in less than 2 months. I only let them use the color one for special projects now!

    Saving at least $150 per year there!

    That makes me smile!

    Just got my HP 2605 color laserjet back for the 3rd time having it cleaned. I found out it is a common problem. It works fine again. Probably have to send it out once a year. Problem is the newer ones are even worse. We do a lot of double sided color printing for our church. So it would seem the best choice. We do have an all in one HP L7555 that is not too bad. My favorite printer is my Epson Photo R340 on my desk. Any photo printing goes to that one. It has a great CD/DVD tray for printable disks. All are on our network. Getting any kind of service from HP is hopeless. Same from Microsoft. I have found buying from Costco and using their Concierge service is the best. They get you right through to whatever the vendor with NO CHARGES.

    I bet this is why AAPL sold off the last hour of trading. One of the distribution centers in CA has been under a bomb threat. I just saw this story as the market closed. They have had bomb sniffing dogs in the building. Obviously there are a lot of people that do not want Apple to succeed and they will use all sorts of tactics.

    I also considered a laser printer for BW only. I needed wireless and wasn't happy with the reviews of the particular Brother that I considered.

    I bought an HP 6000 wireless. I has a large black tank available (comes with the smaller size). It has separate tanks for each of the 3 colors, so I can replace only the color that goes empty instead of the whole tricolor tank. Black XL is $29 for 1200 page size, and the each color XL tank is $13.50 for 700 pages. Also has duplexer to print both sides automatically.

    The failure of the original may have been partly due to my wife having a problem printing her ancestry.com stuff and trying to stop the printing. She turned OFF the printer. I think she tried to pull out pages and the blank paper stack. But HP took great care of the problem.

    I have 3 HP printers--all wireless. The all-in-one is at OSU in the dorm. My son and his roommate (and some of the 6 other suitemates) have used the printer.

    Once again... simply not an AAPL event.

    The market in general lost its enthusiasm, and AAPL was just one of MANY stocks to suffer the exact same fate. They certainly didn't all experience an incidental bomb threat... as so many of them experienced identical reversals today, towards the end of the day's session.

    While AAPL is no doubt a great stock, there are always going to be many days when even the almighty AAPL can't defy the simple law of gravity. ;)

    EDIT: Sorry again, but I just can't agree that there are any conspiracy theories against AAPL, or that there are so many enemies of AAPL that will stop at nothing to thwart the company's success.

    I think that is a good price for the replacements for you. We are non-wireless in my house as we are totally locked down and all computers are fw'd and anti-virus, etc.

    The Brother is the 2270dw. I like that is costs about 3 months of the cartridges I used to buy! Even if it fails after a year, I save.

    But, you have a point there.

    One thing I have noticed lately and want to point out is that there is a strange new increasing volume of mixed up media associated with Apple.

    And more and more there is a noticeable polarization of media commentary regarding Apple's currrent and future state of affairs.

    On one hand, commentaries suggesting great continued success for Apple. On the other hand, commentaries suggesting the end of Apple's greatness.

    It's interesting... but why is it happening?... and what does it all mean?

Hey, I saw the story pop up on my iPad (weird coincidence I guess :) ) and I reported it along with my suspicion that it may have been the work of some sort of an Apple hater. How can you be 100% sure that it had absolutely nothing to do with a conspiracy against Apple? Anyway no big deal.

    Totally agree on the laser printer for black and white. I have had an inexpensive Samsung for 5 years and it hasn't missed a beat.

    My laser printer died a year or more ago. It had gotten flakey before that.

    It was an Apple!

    Got rid of TOL this morning. Too risky with the current housing numbers. Didn't make or lose any $$ on the stock, so nice to just use the money for better purposes... for example I bought a little more AAPL this morning right at a little dip, which you will see if you check it's day chart. Also bought more WFT, as I like the way this stock has been behaving according to my expectations.

    Obviously, the main reason AAPL is dragging it's rear today is due to the news that amzn could take some of the business away from AAPL. Amzn is surging at the expense of AAPL.

    In reality, both AAPL and amzn will do real well going forward. I think you were smart buying more AAPL this morning when it was about $4.00 lower for the day. I had some free money at one of my accounts but I did not pull the trigger. Darn!
