All of the items you mentioned are not worth buying. They're simply extra dealer profit. In fact, in some cars you'll void the rust through warranty if you get their rust proofing. I say save your money and never buy those dealer add-ons.
Has anyone purchased a car top carrier to mount on the Honda roof rack? Does Honda make one for the CR-V? (only seen bike rack and ski rack for CR-V) If I were to buy the Thule cross rails that I have seen several posts on, is there a car top carrier the will fit?
Hello out there. May be considering upgading to a 2002/3 CRV from my 99 EX auto. For those who have made a similar switch, I was wondering about comparisons on: 1) Fuel mileage (better/worse) 2) Power feeling ( I know the numbers say more) 3) Interior noise level 4) General feelings, etc. Thank you, yours rocky5656
upgraded from the 98 to 02 V and fell in love all over again! MPG is better (see previous posts). power "feeling" and true POWER are much better (but i had the wimpiest version of all the year models)... in fact, even in the hot texas sun w/ a/c on max i can get on the freeway w/ minimal acceleration distance and merge in at posted (or better!) speeds. as for interior noise, markedly diminished when compared to my 98 -- my parents both are hard of hearing and they used to hate riding in my V b/c of the noise... now they love it! in fact, the interior noise and the (lack of) power were the only two things i didn't like about my last V. IMO, now it's perfect -- at least for me!
am trying to decide between EX or LX. I don't really want ABS or a moon roof but like the window tinting and EX wheels. Thinking about getting LX, change out the wheels when i need new tires, and consider after market window tinting. what do others think? and what does AM tinting cost? I'll be calling some tinting places next week.
Have you decided if RT4WD is important for you? The cheapest CR-V is the FWD-only LX. I had my 2000 CR-V tinted last July for ~$200 from a Houston shop with a 20+ year reputation. Proper application of window tint is a skill, and I believe it is worth paying extra for the piece of mind of a job well done.
That little cubby hole is probably also used in Japan for minidiscs - those are very popular over there (unlike the US where they never quite took hold). It may be just the right size?
Can all of you tell me if my mpg is in line with your 02 CRVs, or isthere something wrong with mine? After 3 tanks of gas, I've gotten two tanks of 22 mpg (70% highway miles) and one tank of 20 mpg (60% city miles). I'm concerned because the window sticker predicted 22 city, 26 highway and I appear to be below that.
20 mpg is all I have been getting but that is about the same as the Acura 2.3CL I traded in. Driving style and environment have a lot to do with it.I don't think anybody gets the mileage on the sticker.Turn the AC off and do a steady 55 mph and you will probably get the listed MPG but you will be uncomfortable and get run over by people doing 80 mph.It is a lot better mileage than the Explorer I had at 15 mpg.
Well Folks, No matter how hard I tried to get used to it, no amount of stereo enhancements, dynamat, accessories out the wahzoo, I just couldn't make my cute lil' CR-V into an poor-mans MDX.
It's a great SUV, but it IS too small, and I missed my amenities too much.
Saturday, I traded it off, got $21,500 trade-in, and and a discount of $1,500.00 on an '02 MDX Redrock Touring. I'll see GatorGreg and maybe some others of you back at the MDX board. Take care.
I have been getting 20-22 mpg with my EX 5 speed (nearly 9,000 miles). This weekend I went on a 500 mile trip and decided to experiment with the tire pressure. I increased it from 26 psi to 30 psi and got 24+ mpg. The road noise seemed marginally worse and I didn't notice much difference in the handling. I think I will leave it at 30 psi for awhile and keep monitoring the gas mileage. Just thought those of you who are concerned about low gas mileage would be interested.
Somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but in the '02 CR-V manual it states that Honda does NOT recommend the application of aftermarket rust protection. It says that they Honda has already applied its own rust protection and more is not required.
The EPA estimates are estimates. A variation of 1-2 mpg is not significant. Driving styles, altitude, weather, and a host of other variables can change your mileage. I am also not getting the same averages published by the EPA. I'm doing better with 24-27mpg in mixed driving.
My order of a '02 LX 5-spd has arrived at a long-distance dealer who is supposed to ship my CR-V to me. I posted the usual deposit back when I ordered. Dealer is now demanding prepayment IN FULL before they will ship.
Can anyone clue me in as to whether prepayment of a full balance and shipping fee is standard practice for long-distance orders or Internet orders? I've never bought a vehicle this way before so I don't know. I'm certainly not happy about making a certified payment for this much $$$ for merchandise I can't even inspect. How can I protect myself?
Also, they are telling me that they will send my MOS so that I can get my title and tags. I never heard of MOS. Is this also standard?
arkydog, I have never made such a transaction, BUT I would find the dealers action quite normal for any business dealer. I say, get some proof of the dealers existence, if you get it, you should be A OK!
chooki...thanks for the tip on the lowest drawer...i know that the bottom compartment is bigger, but i find it a lot less convenient to look for stuff there while driving. it's too bad that other compartment can't be slightly larger.
what are people finding that stores well in the middle (between) radio and temp control compartment? it seems too small to be very functional.
i can believe the minidisk comment. somethink like that with close proximity to the radio would be perfect.
re: mpg. my lowest mpg thus far has been 27.4, and that was the first tank. i drive ~70% highway, use the a/c 50% of the time, and avoid fast starts and stops. the crv has surpassed my expecations in this dept. 17-18 mpg (muckyduck) sounds very low unless it's possibly 100% city driving with a/c 100% of the time. gas mileage is usually best in the summer; in the winter months, the gas is treated to reduce smog.
muckyduck, what's the verdict on your seat rock? did they fix it?
Hey all, I just installed, er stuck, an i-VTEC badge on my 'V and I thought I'd post a pic to show it off. It's the same one that normally goes on the fenders of some of the overseas 'Vs (mine's from Down Under). Me likey!
thanks for your response. cost wasn't the issue for me, ie buying 2WD v RT4WD it was paying for amenities i didn't want/ need. i talked to a window installer today, she shivered at the thought of aftermarket tinting. They don't recommend anyone. says they get frequent requests to remove it and it's a mess. also said it breaks down w/ exteme high and low temps. we sometimes have a month of 100+ temps here. they usually recommend replacing the windows to get rid of the goo. interesting they have a crv owner who is having them put in tinted WINDOWS; she's gonna get back to me to tell me what that costs: probably a pretty penny! thanks again.
I have a black 2000 2WD LX because I don't need 4WD and all the extra stuffs of the EX. The only thing I did want from the EX is the ABS but Honda didn't offer it as option, oh well. I had tint windows done on my LX about 2 years ago (about $200 or so) because I like the look and heat reduction and so far the tint still looking good. Just be sure to get it done at a repute dealer as Slugline suggested.
Slugline, did you get my email about the jobleads? If you still need them, I have some more for you, let me know.
Before the CR-V, my sister had a Civic tinted at the same shop four years ago. Both jobs are still flawless, despite being parked outside all the time. (Summers in Texas aren't exactly mild!) For even more reassurance, the work is backed by a lifetime warranty.
Certainly, however, the quality of tinting, as with any aftermarket product, can vary widely from very good to very bad. (Your window installer could probably tell you how much of a difference OEM-quality auto glass makes versus cheap replacements.) So if you can't locate a reputable tint shop in your area, I would definitely understand your concerns, acor2.
svnla: I haven't gotten any email from you recently. Go ahead, and thanks!
Has anyone tried cassettes (remember those?!) in the upper storage compartment? Since the stereo is an am/fm/cd/cassette, you could put a few cassettes in the upper bin and your cd's in the lower one.
I am really disappointed in the 17-18 mpg I've been getting but it is almost all city driving with A/C on most of the time - Texas heat, you know. Have not been on highway for any extended period for a while. My previous car, a Pontiac Sunfire, got really good gas mileage city/highway/summer/winter - I know it was not an suv but I am used to 25 mpg city, 31 highway. I still love the EX - so much nicer to drive than the Sunfire or any other car I've owned.
I think the seat is fixed - it certainly does not move like it was, yet when I come to a stop, I still feel some movement coming from the back, which is what the rocking seat problem started with and just got worse over time. So, I don't have a final answer yet.
Just got a print edition of the 7/15 Business Week, and that article I'm quoted in is actually the cover story! And I specifically mention the CR-V my wife and I test drove. :-)
Also, we had a moonroof installed recently, in her Legacy wagon. It's an ASC Model 750 power glass moonroof, with really cool one touch up/down and programmable so that it closes when you remove the key, automatically.
Any how, to bring this on topic, they had a Gen I CR-V in the parking lot, with the same roof! It looked great! It fit nicely on the flat roof, compared to the trickier installation on our raised-roof Legacy.
If interested, e-mail me at ateixeira@ifc.org for more info. It's a 17"x30" size. They even replace the headliner with a nicer, padded cloth one, and offer a lifetime warranty.
I didn't have my digital camera with me that day, but here are pics of ours (same model), which shows what a quality job they did. They're in MD.
I tinted my 2002 LX using solargard tint and I had somebody in Canada install it for me. Solargard is gauranteed for life and that gaurantee included any discoloration of the tint.
I like it a lot except the 2002 has raised dots on the rear glass and the tint has a different shade over the dots then it does on the window itself. Noone has ever noticed it, I do because I know it is there and I look for it.
I paid $200 canadian! So for me it wasn't too expensive around $125.
I only did the five windows, and once I thought about it some more, I think I only paid $180 canadian. And the guy did a really good job, you gotta love canadians!
Does the tint just give you privacy or is there a UV factor advantage? Someone told me that if you want sun protection you need an entirely different(and more expensive) application. If there is protection, how much and are there different amounts depending on who does the work?
That's because the metallic tints are better at blocking out infrared and UV radiation, but block out the same amount of visible light as the comparable non-metallic types.
My research involves Ultra violet light and I have a UV meter. 98% of the UV light is filtered by the normal glass on the 1st generation crv. I haven't tested the 2nd generation. So the tint would only filter out the last 2% maximum.
I am not sure what effect the tint has on UV rays but I am sure it filters some more of the UV rays in addition to the normal glass. I would bet that ateixeira and protege have it right.
In any case the tint keeps the visible spectrum out of the car and that helps to keep the car cooler on hot days and it also provides you with privacy.
On another suv forum, there is quite a bit of discussion about '02 brake 'clunking'. I have it on my EX - first I thought it was ABS self test but I understand LX (no ABS) models have this noise also. Is this a problem or 'normal' as some Honda service departments are telling customers - never had a car do this.
Daveghh - Honda uses what they call "green shield" glass in the first gen CR-V. I assume it carried over as they use it in other cars as well. Some mornings, when there is a dew on the windshield, you can see it has a greenish tint to it. I never expected it to block out 98%, though. How much does normal glass block?
Muckyduck - It could be the brake pads shifting back and forth when you go from forward to reverse. There is a little play in the clamps that allows the pads to expand and contract along with changes in temp.
I had checked the rear seat of my 2002 CR-V and it turns out that the handle for folding down the seat is loose. Not the attachment to the seat but the handle's spring is sort of loose. I checked the other one on another side and it is much tighter.
I know that I'm nit-picking about this but would the warranty cover this? Thanks
Just brought my 2002 EX in on Thursday because of the "brake clunking" which occurs when going from reverse to forward. The dealers response was that "Honda uses different parts suppliers for their brakes and that they don't always fit the same". They didn't even offer to replace the pads to try to find a set that "fit". This really is not a satisfactory response. If I wanted "non-genuine" parts then I would get them on the after market but I at a minimum expect the OEM parts to all work together and meet Honda Specs. It is going back in this Friday to have a visit with the "lead tech" and I am ready to make a stink if this BS continues!!!
Varmint, I am pretty sure that "regular" glass filters out very little of the UV light. I remember looking at that b4, but I cannot remember what percentage it blocks. Maybe 10%...
I have a 2002LX CR-V I took it to this local place I did pay $120.00 for a quantum window film is guaranteed for life and that guarantee included any discoloration of the tint, also if you get any scratch in it too.I did both sides. it really looks good #35% legal limits down in Miami FL. Greetings from sunny Miami
I am not sure about the wattage difference between both EX/LX but a could tell you that on the LX its almost impossible to listen to the radio or cd at highway 45/65speed with the windows open it is very weak on my opinion, more power would it be nice. greetings from sunny Miami.
Since window tint seems to be the topic of the day, I tought I'd chime in since I've had both my 'Vs tinted:
First pic is of my old 1st gen 'V. I had 28$ (legal limit in Fla) Formula One brand (by Llumar??) tint applied to front windows, and 18% everywhere else:
Second pic is of my new 'V. I again had 28% added to the front windows (same brand). However, since the new EX already comes with privacy glass in the rear, in the back all I added was 28% to the rear hatch glass just to make that window a bit darker:
I really like this tint and haven't had any problems thus far. I think the first job was about $200, while the 2nd was less since I only did 3 windows. Hope this helps.
I have brake clunk on both of my cars when I back up and stop, then go forward and stop. I believe it's the pads shifting slightly in the holder. It doesn't seem to happen once the brakes have been used a bit around town.
I didn't even really notice this in my Nissan until reading this forum. I do notice it a little bit more in the CRV, for what that's worth.
By the way, this is a separate noise from the ABS clunk, in case anyone is wondering. The reverse/forward noise I hear is very repeatable, and I can see how it could be annoying/unnerving to some people.
Miatadog - you might ask them to try removing the pads and asking them to put whatever they use for their anti-squeal compound back there, it might help keep them from moving around.
I've been considering tinting since I bought my 'V back in '99. The question has become, am I still considering it, or just too lazy to have it done? ;-)
Robmarch wrote: "I have brake clunk on both of my cars when I back up and stop, then go forward and stop. I believe it's the pads shifting slightly in the holder. It doesn't seem to happen once the brakes have been used a bit around town."
It probably stops because the pads have heated up and expanded to fit the calipers. I'm pretty sure that is the reason for the clunking. The information comes from a reputable source and it makes sense. The reason why it is more obvious in the CR-V is the same reason why we hear more tire noise; too little sound dampening.

Some of the long-term SUVs Edmunds tests, even compact models, get mileage in the 14-16 range.

The industry standard is the percentage of visible light that passes through, i.e. 35 (normal), 20 (dark), or 5 (limo tint).
Funny thing is, two different films rated 35 will block different amounts of heat. Metallic films tend to do slightly better but also cost more.

Gatorgreg, you have the same preference on the colors of your two CRV's. What year was your first gen.? Mine was a 98.
Greg: so you made the back glass even darker? Can you see when you are backing up?
Does the CR-V have floating brake calipers? I'm wondering if that would explain the noise. I don't think so. Anyone?
