For those interested in '02 CR-V mileage, I just put close to 1000 mi on my new LX 5-spd over the past week and am on my 3d tank of gas. Mileage for first 2 tanks ranged from a low of 23 mpg in mixed highway/in-town w/ AC (some cruise control) to a high of 27-28 mpg on highway w/ AC (about 1/2 cruise control time). My highway speed has averaged 65-68 mph. Best mileage was in NC mountains, as always. This was w/o added roof rack, which is going up this week.
If I were to order a new CRV today, what could I expect the delivery time to be. I was at the local dealer yesterday, three CRV's on the lot with about 2 or three cars driving up to look at them! A pretty hot car here!
Hey phillyguy, did you try sending me a pic over the weekend? If you did I didn't get it AFAIK. Oh well, I'll just post one of my own personal favorites instead BTW, I'm seeing A LOT more 2nd gen 'Vs on the road now. I guess it's cuz July was the all-time record sales month.
My 2002 CRV has a noise in the right front which is likely the engine mount doing a crash stop at times. This happens on washboard roads. Also, I have heard a noise coming from the glove box area once the engine is off. This has happened only a few times. A previous post said this was a faulty airbag sensor. The dealer noted engine mount problem at the last service as well but said it can't be fixed in warranty until Honda issues a directive/instructions. Same story on the mystery noise by the glove box. I know someone else had this engine mount problem, on this board(post 7734) and this was fixed. What are my options?
This is very interesting, since last week, my Honda Dealer machined a rear rotor and replaced the brake pads "under warranty", during the 16,000km service. I was not charged for the brake work, and didn't even know about it until I went to pick up the car, although I said that I could smell burning brakes when I took the car in. They had the car for about 4 hours in total. If the dealer needs Honda's permission to do warranty work, did they get it just for my vehicle? Or is Honda aware of a "burning brake" problem already? Have they issued a blanket "go ahead and fix any brake problem under warranty" directive? If so, why is no one else on this or other forums complaining of burning brakes? I don't get it. BTW the new driver's sunvisor is in and I have to find time to go get it fitted.
Sorry about that. Took a trip to the seashore(without camera) to escape summer heat. BTW, "BABY"(as she now has a name) did great on 1st extended trip. Had the AC on and CD cranked up so I didn't notice wind noise, but she weaved in and out of traffic with the utmost ease. Pix coming, trust me.
It has rained a lot - I took the cover off the spare this weekend and there was water standing in the tire grooves and the cover was damp inside. I let them dry before replacing. Why would water get inside the cover. I could not find any rips or holes in the cover (the OEM soft cover).
Mucky - Notice the big hole in the back of the cover. Water comes down and bounces off the sheetmetal or it runs down the back of the cover. That's who it gets in. Sometimes leaves will get in that way, as well. It's never caused a problem, AFAIK.
Forgive me in advance if this has been discussed extensively somewhere here, but I was not having any luck with the search engine. I just purchased a CR-V LX AWD. I know these vehicles are not made to drive on soft sandy beaches, but a friend also has the same 2002 model and claims he has done it without any problems. I am planning a Fall vacation to the Outer Banks and would LOVE to be able to do this, but I thought they were not built for this type of driving. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for all the great info you've given me; I just put my first 700 mi. on my new black LX AWD; 25 mpg. I've taken it easy but still does 75-80 like nothing. The shopping was intense. Living in metropolitan Chgo. provided me w/plenty of dealers to 'walk out of.' I just made sure the most lively wire was close to home. Since this is my 1st black vehicle(5week wait), what's the best treatment? Is undercoating necessary and at what price is fair? Thanx
hey joseph, I've never driven the outer banks myself but here's a pic that looksha posted of his 'V (on another forum) at corrola in the outer banks of NC, so apparently it can be done. However, he says he aired down his tires and takes a lot of other stuff with him in case he were to get stuck (but he says he hasn't got stuck yet), so you might want to contact him for some advice. If you send me an e-mail I can put you in touch with him.
Currently in the market for the LX AWD and would appreciate hearing about any good dealer recommendations/prices that members have been able to negotiate. I am in the buying process after about 12 years and am kinda rusty !
I have been waiting since late May for a 2002 Chianti Red EX 5-Speed to arrive at my dealership. They will not order a CRV - will only sell cars based on their monthly allotment. Dealer gave me a price of only $800 over invoice ($21,122), so I decided to wait it out.
Spoke with him on Saturday and he indicated a 2003 Red EX 5-Speed was being allocated to their dealership in October. Also said he would honor the "price" quoted for the 2002 model of $800 over invoice (i.e. I would have to pay $800 over the 2003 invoice price).
Couple of questions:
Anybody familiar with 2003 pricing yet? Will Honda maintain the Chianti Red color for 2003? Anyone aware of upgrades for 2003?
I asked these questions to the dealer and he said he did not know and would have to wait until the brochure came out (approximately 6 weeks).
If you drive on sand, air down to 18-20psi and drive smoothly to avoid digging yourself into a hole. Take a shovel and a tow rope just in case, but smooth operation should keep you out of trouble.
I have finally decided to get a CR-V. At this point I might as well wait a little while and get an '03 model. Is there a code in the VIN or a label plate somewhere that identifies the model year of the vehicle? If the '03 CR-V isn't changing much from the '02, this may be the only way to tell them apart.
I just purchased what you're looking for and worked on line. In my test drive, I got an opening and started using one solid price against each dealer. I made sure everything was substantiated. I gave myself an end of the month deadline( mine coincided w/fiscalyear end. On that last day I gave each the choice of earning my business on the phone and by the end of the day I felt very comfortable with the product and the price. Hope it helps
Depending on how dirty they are or stained you may try an automotive carpet cleaner and a brush. Take them out and hose them down, spray on the product and rub. If that does not work as well as you like becuase of ground in stains, take them to an automotive car cleaner and they will do them for about 15-20$ and that will do the trick.
After 18 months of research (much from this board), I bought a 2002 CRV AWD LX automatic.....Mohave Mist.
I paid $500 under sticker with absolutely no other costs (other than 8% sales tax.) They beat my credit union's financing at 4.9%.
I am selling my car privately so there was no haggling there either. The transaction took less than an hour.
The information in this forum is incredible!! Thanks Edmunds!
Also...the interior color has changed a bit...must be HONDA listened to the complaints about the "beige". It is much closer to taupe now...very attractive.
Hello again, it has been a while. Has anybody tried using tinted or colored auto polish specifically designed for certain colors? I have used Armor All wax/polish and not very happy with the results on Black. It shows a lot of swirl marks. Will the polish formulated for black (dark) colors work any better? Thanks
To hide swirl marks, try a product like Mother's sealer and glaze, or Meguiar's polish, or 3M Imperial Hand Glaze. Now, these will only help to reduce the appearance of swirls....they will not do anything at all to remove them.
Removing swirls is another matter all together...Meguiar's #9 2.0 or 3M swirl mark remover are supposed to work well, but are best applied with a random-orbital buffer.
Remember to top off any glaze/filler type product with a good, non-cleaner wax.
There will be a new model out before I post pictures!!! I don't have a digital camera.
Truly the interior color has changed. My "V" seems to have some of the "old" beige i.e. center tray;however, many of the molded parts are now a darker taupe. I think the fabric is the same.I'll have to look closer at a "V" in the parking lot at work to note the differences. It is a few months old. Also, mine is from England.
wellresearched, Oh yours is from England, cool. That would explain the differences. I wonder if there are any other subtle differences? Let us know what you discover.
Also learned on this forum: air pressure. I knew it was riding "hard." I checked the air pressure and it was 35psi. I lowered it to 28PSI and its a big improvement! It came with Brigestone Duelers.
gatorgreg, How can I get in touch with looksha? I'm heading down to Corolla next month and have a couple of questions about where I can drive on the beach. I'm hoping he can kindly help me out.
We have had a 2002 CR-V LX in Zircon Blue with a "black" (more like dark gray) interior for two weeks. We chose the blue because I wanted a dark interior. We have two kids (one with cleats) and a chocolate lab.
We bounced around four dealers in Ottawa, getting different responses to our request for something below MSRP. The dealer that gave us the best price ($2000 off MSRP - but wait add the PDI of $950 and an admin fee/grab of $99) was also the least arrogant. What is it with Honda dealers? We were, however, impressed with their service dept. My husband noticed a slight pull to the right. Last Wednesday I took it in and they checked the alignment (nothing wrong), rotated the tires, and evened out the tire pressure. They were courteous and took even a small complaint seriously.
We had researched vehicles through "Consumer Reports", the "Lemon-aid Books", and of course these forums before test driving our top three which also included the RAV-4 and the Escape. We hadn't been in love with the CR-V (which probably helped with the negotiating), but the latest offset test crashes (NIISH) convinced us. After two weeks, we are really happy with "Anny". My only complaint is that when I put it in reverse to park it, I usually mist the windshield. It amuses the kids.
We are looking for a Canadian equivalent to Handa-accessories but not having much luck. We want front mud flaps, the plastic cargo liner, and a roof rack - but don't want to pay Honda prices. Any suggestions?
Hey Greg! Did you get the pictures I emailed of "Baby"? BTW, last tank of gas @ 23mpg combined city/hwy. Getting better. Tire pressure @ 30psi. I might try lowering to 28psi. So far no noises except typical break noise in front. Just noticed there is no low gas light on dash. 1st car in a long time without. Also driver's armrest leaning down. I'm not sure if this is fault of leather installer or Honda. Have to check it out. Getting used to the "quirks"(gear shift, back gate) except when I drive wife's Altima I am reaching for column shifter.
Soccermum2 -- I have been looking for a site like HANDA in Canada for some time without any success. Best I could find was a couple of US-based sites that deliver to Canada, but with exchange, shipping, taxes, and possible duties, I am not sure they are worth it. One of the better was Hondacuraworld.com, located in Buffalo. In July, we were on holiday in Maine (I live in Ottawa as well), and before leaving home, I cooked up a scheme to have a hard spare tire cover from Hondacuraworld delivered to the place we were staying. It got there all right, but they sent me the wrong one! So I sent it back, and have not yet figured out how to get the one I want. Also, I bought a Weathertech cargo tray from weathertechcanada.com based in Hamilton, and we are very satisfied with it.
If you figure something out, let us know -- I know that there are a number of Canadians searching for the same thing you are!
Hi Virg - I would love to know who you bought your CR-V from. Sounds like it would be worth the drive from Hamilton. My wife and I have decided we are going to buy one this fall, but the dealers around here won't budge on the price.
I have also been trying and cannot get what you asked. It seems that there is no dealer in Canada and even if there is its probably just as expensive as the Honda dealer because it all comes fro the U.S. anyways. Good luck
It was Hunt Club Honda in Ottawa. If you are interested in a more detailed description of our experience my husband posted it in the forum of www.canadiandriver.com, go to their buying and selling, then the folder is "tips for buying Hondas". My husband posted as 'Shrimpdude'.
The price began at $27900 (Can MSRP) + 850 (PDI) + 132.14 (block heater) = $28882.14 - 2000 (what my husband negotiated while I was at soccer practice) = $26882.14 + 100 (air tax) + 75 (fuel tax) + 99 (admin fee) =$27156.14 + 2172.49 (PST) + 1900.93 (GST) don't you love the taxes on taxes! + 44.68 (for licenses) = $31,274.21 total.
The Sales Rep was the most decent of the four we encountered in Ottawa; his name is Ron Gaile (sp?).
I was about to take my cr-v in for some issues and now they have stopped. The popping noise when I turn left and the creaking/squeaking from the rear moving forward/reverse at slow speed (probably the only time I could really hear them). Any ideas why these would stop??
Also, about the brake clunking - if I do not reverse, the noise does not happen the first time I use them going forward. It appears that if I reverse, then forward, there are two clunks - one when using the brakes going backwards, one using the brakes going forward. But if I never reverse, there is no clunk. Anyone else noticed this??
Can some people please post what they paid for their CRV in Canada. After reading about soccermum02 deal of $2000 off MSRP, it might be a good time buy now.
Just looked at a green LX speed and a brown EX 5 speed, the former assembled in Japan, the latter in England, both with brown interiors. I don't recall the previous brown interiors, but from casual observation, they looked identical ... except maybe one had 17" wheels, 5 speed automatic, leather interior ... and say a 5 cylinder, 3 litre, 200BHP engine ...
P.S. 'and would you believe I saw Bin Laden hiding out in Graceland?
I think I forgot to mention that the 2002 CR-V LX was an automatic.
For those south of the border, if the numbers look too good to be true, it's partly because the conversion from U.S.$$ to Can $$ isn't the same as a bank (i.e. about 1.65) but closer to 1.3 because of some deal through the North American dealers (I don't remember where I read this). That means you should probably look at percentages (e.g. in our case roughly 7% off MRSP) instead of actual numbers. I didn't give a % over invoice because in Canada we can't get a good fix on "real" invoice.
BTW ours was made in Japan with Vin # beginning with JH. One of the many selling points to us; we have a history of one mazda (before buy out by ford) and three toyotas between us.
Hey phillyguy, I didn't get any CR-V pics You used the e-mail address in my profile, right? I just sent myself a test message using the address in the profile and it worked, so I'm not sure why I wouldn't have gotten the pics???
Baggs, send me an e-mail (click on my name) and I can put you in touch with looksha (I don't think they want us to post e-mail addresses or links to other forums here)
Does anyone out there know the current availability of 5 speed CR-Vs in Southern Cal? I will be shopping in early Oct. and had heard that in Northern Cal is 4-5 weeks wait for a 5-speed. Any info about the supply would be a big help.

Not bad, considering weight of car and AWD.

I cannot remember if I ever put the 98 mats in the washing machine or not. I think I did, and it worked fine.
What year do you have?
