You'll have to check the specifics for your state, but the general rule is that if it was fitted by the manufacturer then it should remain and be kept operative.
Some people mount them in the center of the wheel, others adapt the existing bracket.
I don't see any real advantage to removing it, and it could be a detriment in any insurance claim if it were missing.
You know, mine was missing when I bought the Jeep. There are two wires that have been cut off even with the top of the tire bracket and the bolt holes are there. I guess the YJ's couldn't accomodate a 31" tire with the third brake light in place.
I'm a Jeep newbie and just bought a 2000 Sahara with hard top. I am interested in getting a soft top as well for the summer. Are the soft tops like those on JeepWorld compatible? How does it attach - is there attachment hardware that is needed?
I had a look at their site and it's very hard to tell. They say that they're the same as OE, then go on to point out the differences!
"The following soft top kits are the same as Original Equipment. Jeep exclusive plastic header with two quick-release latches. Zipper and hook-and-loop fastener around windows for a better seal. Lower frame profile when the Jeep Wrangler top is down. Predrilled sports bar accommodates top, no drilling. Removable windows, resist cracking and clouding. No snaps to snap, no channels to install. Fold-and-tumble operation for convertible-like use. All hardware required. (What does this mean? Do they supply all hardware, or is all hardware required???) Doors not included. These tops can be used with full-length hardtop style doors or with half-style doors."
I could take a guess but why don't you contact them and get it straight from the horses mouth?
Don't forget if you are mounting a bigger than standard tire and using an adapter to move it up or out for spacing, you may need to extend those little rubber bumpers that are mounted on the tailgate. If your tire does not make snug contact with these 4 bumpers,it will vibrate on a good trail and rip your gate off.
I just checked out the link to those seat heaters. It looks pretty easy and the switches do look stock- they'd show up even less w/ gray interior.
The only problem is installing them outside, while it's cold out- i don't have a garage. It may be an early spring project and it would cut into the 33s and 3" lift funding.
Jeeps- there are just too many things we can do to them.
Yes, I like that one too. You don't have to swing the tire away before opening the tailgate, unlike virtually all the others out there. The only downside is that you have to drill the tub to allow an internal reinforcing bracket to bolt through.
I think that was the quickest decision I have ever seen. One vote for the 33's and 3" lift and that's all it took. Not that I'm saying that's a bad thing, I was going to be a second vote for it.
Our weather prediction for last night and today said partly cloudy and zero percent chance of rain. This is what my Toyota looked like when I got up this morning:
For those who can't see Mtngal's pic, right-click properties to get the url and copy it into your browser's address window. My ski goggles looked just like that yesterday!
I can see the photo, but if others can't, let me know and I'll just post a link to the web site/album I used. This was the first time I tried to post a photo (well, the second time - the first time I was using a different photo hosting site).
P.S. - I loved the article. Wish I could do something like that!
Ok, it looks like it's one of those sites you can't link to. However, if you go to the site directly and look at it, the image is then kept in your computer's temporary internet cache. When that address comes up again, as on this page, your computer brings up the image from cache rather than going out on the net to find it.
So, having seen once you'll continue see it again. But if you haven't seen it yet you won't see it for a while, as the hosting site says too many people have been looking at it.
When I posted the pic it looked fine too. However, after returning to this site this a.m. it doesn't show up. I don't know what the problem is but I suspect that your internet cache is probably reason it's showing up on your system.
In any case, you should be able to right click on the image or image place holder and "Load Image" from most browsers.
Peeps, most of you guys should have some free web space from your ISP, assuming that you are a subscriber to one of the bigger companies, and not to just a local ISP service.
In order for pics to show up as the actual picture and not just as a LINK to a picture or as a red X, you have to have your pic already somewhere on the Internet, hosted at a site that allows hot links. Many sites where you can upload and store pics do NOT allow hot links, since it uses up band width or something every time someone is looking at the pic from another site.
Also, some places require passwords, so you post a pic here, and it looks fine. Even other people can see it for a while, but then your password times out, and the next time someone, including YOU, tries to look at the pic, it is gone.
So, if you have personal webspace with your Internet Service Provider, learn how to use it. Heck even I was able to learn enough to do it, and I am a puter dummy. If you don't have free personal web space with your Internet account, then find a place or an individual who will host some pics for you and allow hot links to them.
Gill allows hot links, so you can host a few pics there. If too many people do that, he probably will have to put a limit on the number than can be hot linked, but right now, he allows it.
OK, so once you have your pic stored somewhere on the Net, whether in your own personal webspace or somewhere else, it has a unique address that is assigned to it.
In order for the pic to show up somewhere else, the unique address (URL) has to be included in a link.
At the location where you are ready for the pic to appear, then type the following...
Now, substitute < for [ and > for ], and the picture will appear, like below. Take note that quotation marks must be used before and after the URL, and be sure that the last thing in the URL is dot jpg . I don't know why that dash appears between J and PG in my example URL above. It is NOT there when I type it, but it shows up when I post. It should just be .jpg, not .j-pg.
The observant among you will have noticed one of a second pair of hood bump stops in the picture. That was the first mod I made made to my Jeep back in '99. That second set allows the hood to rest back on the windshield without damage to itself or the windshield frame.
Just purchase a second pair from your Jeep dealer for about $3 each, then measure very carefully before drilling the holes! Then, use a little primer or touch-up paint on the exposed bare metal of the hole you drilled. When it's dry, apply a little dish detergent or similar to the stub on the back of the bump rubber, then twist into place through the hole. Job done!
If you mess up a post or two, as we all do from time to time, you always have the opportunity to delete it if you wish. Just click on the 'Delete' box, next to the 'Bookmark' box on the title line of the post. Of course, you can only see the 'Delete' box and do this to your own posts!
Thanks, mac, for explaining why I could see it, but others couldn't (yes, I had looked at it to make sure I had the correct address before I posted it). Guess I'll go back to posting a link to the albums in the future. Thanks everyone for your help!
Tom - I'm one of those with a VERY local ISP. It was the only one with a local phone number (none of the big companies think that an area that might have 6,000 total a good place for a phone line).
I'm sorry if my last post wasn't very clear. After your reply about the spare tire carrier, I went back and re-read mine and realized that it did read that I didn't have a spare tire carrier. I do have one that has a 31" tire on it now, it's the third brake light that is missing.
I have my new (to me) tranny in the garage. Now I just have to figure out WHEN to put it in.
If it were my Jeep I'd replace that brake light as a priority. Never mind the people that have to turn their head for ten seconds at a time to talk to their passenger, consider the person on the phone, doing their paperwork, eating a burger, putting on makeup, reading a book, etc., etc., etc. You know you're going to have good chance of having one of them on your tail every time you go out.
If it was practical, I'd have a hand come out that was holding a big red flag, and it'd wave in the face of the following vehicle whenever I stepped on the brake!
Not that I feel strongly about it or anything.
:--)
P.S. Don't forget to fit a new clutch with that transmission.
Glen - I'm glad I'm not the only person who can see my icy Taco. For a while I thought I was seeing things. As far as cable goes, I keep thinking about it, but my cable company is another really local one and only provides the cable lines for my current local ISP, so while I'd have a much faster link, I'd still have the same ISP. I don't have cable at all - when I moved up there they didn't carry Fox Sports West so I couldn't watch the LA Kings (who ended up beating the Edmonton Oilers Saturday - scored the winning goal with 5 seconds left in regulation). I ended up going with Directv and getting the hockey package.
They are finally predicting a big storm, so we drove the Wrangler to work today! Love this Jeep weather.
Well all of you really lost me on the posting pictures thing.
i have some digital pics of my jeep and my CB install. However, I have a local ISP- no webspace.
If someone can describe the posting thing for in terms a 7 year old can understand it would be great. Oh wait, a 7 year old probably knows more about computers than I do.

I don't need much convincing.
One vote does put 33s and a 3" lift in the lead. I am an undecided. This is a democracy (well kind of)...
I don't think anyone on this board is going to tell me not to lift a Jeep and put bigger meats on her.

I have the opportunity to go to the Bush series and the Cup race at Richmond this spring. I need to find a hotel/motel near the track.
Richmond International Speedway hasn't responded to my email yet.
Thanks,

Guess SoCal can get into the act, too!
Anybody see this on ESPN?
