The advantage of going to 16" wheels is that you can go to taller tires, for clearance, without going to wider, poor mileage and highway performance, tires. I went from 30x9.5x15's to Firestone 235/85r16's. These are 32" tall and 9" wide. Super offroad traction and good highway performance. They do hum a bit, but ride about the same, same inflation pressure, as the old tires. I like the hum. The most noticeable difference is the drop in rpm at a given speed, you have to down shift more for steep hills. For tons of info and ratings on tires check out the Tire Rack website.

They're great (look, sound and performance wise). Although, as Mac indicated, I have had them spit up rocks that have been picked up at slower speeds (hear them in the wells and bouncing off various components). The strangest one was a rock I spit up and subsequently hit with my windshield - luckily no chips/cracks....

True, but similar options are available for 15" rims. For instance, BFG ATs are available in a 33"x 9.5"x 15", which are 33 inches tall and the same width as the original 30 inch tires.
I found a 2000 TJ with auto. They're trying to ask 15,000, but TMV via Edmunds is showing 11,000 and change. Wondering what kinds of issues I would have to worry about with a 2000 TJ. I don't know the VIN (didn't write it down), but I guess I could email it to DC using Tom's directions, but would that list which tranny it is? I would prefer a manual, but I found a 98 but it had 110,000 miles and a leaky tranny. It didn't feel like it was in nearly as good a shape.
It had Smittybilt bumpers and nerf bars, but they didn't match the red/black color scheme of the car.
Mac can tell ya the model of the tranny, but that 3 speed auto was around for years and years. It was in 2003 that they dropped it in favor of a four speed auto.
As far as I know, that old 3 speed auto was a real workhorse and had great reliability.
That K&N filter would worry me some. Maybe it was fine, but there have been reports of dust getting past those filters and into the tube going to the engine. In order to be efficient at trapping and holding dirt, they need to be cleaned and re-oiled on some interval, and I wonder if the previous owner did that? I don't believe in those K&Ns, and the good old 4.0 L has enough power to suit me anyway. Sure, the K&Ns pass more air, but what about filtering efficiency??? Heck, just take the air filter out, and then you will get a lot more air to the engine, but you will also get a lot of dirt to the engine too.
It is very much in question as to the benefit of the extra air anyway, unless some other modifications have been made. Maybe there have been some other mods to the engine, but that would make we shy away from it even more.
Give me a used Jeep that just has the good old factory air intake system.

Well I was up at the dealership today and the guys there asked me what I was doing this Sunday. They said they were going up to one of the trail just across the PA line for some fun. They are all a bunch of Jeep guys.
I'm busy Sunday but they invited me any time that I could make it. Thought they would be a pretty good group of guys to wheel with. I figure if I break anything they'll be right there to take in and have it warranted I think I'm going to have to make the next trip.
Wow! What a list. I read through it and decided I don't know very much about cars. The only thing I must have missed was the '98 dash gauge problem (which didn't affect all '98 models, just some of them like mine). I know there was a TSB on it. I also saw one there about the AC evaporator freezing up. I'd never noticed that one (or else it doesn't apply to my model year) - I have had my AC freeze up more than once and need to check it out. Paul, I've got a 2000 TJ. I've got around 54k miles on it, and haven't run into any problems. As far as I know, the only real problem with the 2000 is the TSB about the debris shield that needs to be added to the engine. There is a place where leaves and other debris can collect, which could catch fire from the engine heat (next to the block). This one seems (to me) to be such a theoretical problem that I've yet to go in to get it fixed. The only other thing is that I didn't see what model the 2000 was - if it has the 4 banger with the auto, it is going to be a DOG! The 4 with a manual is slow on road, especially at higher speeds, but is acceptable. The auto and 4 are painfully slow on the road. (Off roading wont' be a problem at all.) I imagine you already know this, but it never hurts to add to the mix.

I have a 97 TJ with the 4banger(but a manual) and it struggles at 60+, unless I have a tailwind and am going downhill. It's low end/low speed characteristics are fine though.
I hear you on the K&N. I have one in my Grand Cherokee and had one in my Civic. It improved the mileage on the Civic by a couple mpg. But for offroading, I would definitely keep the good ol' factory filters in there. If I did end up with this TJ, I would use the K&N on the road. I keep em nice and moist.
I have a 99 Sahara that had the stock Grizzly rims 15x7's with the 30" wrangler GSA's. I just went with 31x10.5x15 MTR's in December.I know that the rim size is different than the Ruby's 15 vs 16 but my impressions driving with the soft top are that the MTR's are pretty close in noise level at highway speeds to the GSA's.Off road performance is much much better(understatement) with the MTR's than the "Get Stuck Always" tires that were on before.

I bought another Jeep yesterday and it feels good to be back.
I bought a new 97 kept it for 5 years and I decided that I wanted to go in another direction. I bought an 01 Audi A4...after not liking that I bought a 02 Audi TT. While it was a nice vehicle and I did love it...I just could not stop admiring a Jeep everytime I passed one. Well long story short, the Audi is gone and now I am back in a 04 Wrangler sport...nicely equiped may I add. I must say that it just feels "right" to be back in the only vehicle that I ever been truly happy with. Anyways here is what I got and the price...

Well, Jeep Buds, the Old Tomster and Paul had a great day yesterday. I met Paul for breakfast at a Cracker Barrel Restaurant about 22 miles east of Turkey Bay. After breakfast, Paul hopped in Thelma Jane with me (and Ross Allen, of course), and we drove to Turkey Bay.
We hit most of the fun spots that I like to go to while I am at Turkey Bay, and Paul really had a good time. Heck, I even let Paul drive Thelma Jane through Bronco Gully!
Paul took tons of pics during the day, so when he gets them posted, he can share them with us. He uses webshots, I think. He will also post them in Gill's gallery.
Welcome, back2jeep! Sounds like a really nice deal. Once you have Wrangler fever, you can't get over it, except to own one. I still love my '98 and wouldn't trade it except on a new one.

Went out looking for new tires today and the mud terrians caught my eye. I'm debating on the 31 x 10.50 ", or the 30's. Tom, i was reading a post of yours from a while back, and you were saying how the 31's and some other mod's hurt the gas mileage. How bad has it hurt the gas mileage. and with the 31's is wheel spacing all you need,,or is it recommended to put a lift on..
No lift is needed for 31" x 10.50" tires on a TJ. That's the biggest you can go, though, without a lift.
I have the BFG Mud Terrains in the 31 x 10.50 size, and I like them fine. I do have a 2" lift, but I used to run 31 x 10.50 All Terrains with no lift. There was no problem running like that.
Some people need to add a washer or two to their steering stops to prevent rubbing on the control arms at full turn. This wasn't necessary in my case.
The rubbing on control arms or on spring perches is a backspacing issue. Most factory Jeep wheels are backspaced about 5" or 5.5". Less backspacing would pull the tires outward, away from the frame. This would give more clearance on the inside, but would make the tires stick out more. I now have 15" x 8" AR767 wheels with 4" backspacing. This gives me plenty of room on the inside and makes those 31 x 10.50 Muds stick out past the flares about an inch and a half. I like the looks with the tires sticking out like that.
It would be hard to say how much each mod took away from gas mileage, Billy. I carry lots of extra weight with the Kilby gas tank skid, the rocker guards, the winch, and two sets of tools in the back.
There's no doubt that the 31 x 10.50 Muds are gonna take their toll on gas mileage, but I would say not more than a couple MPG. I can still get about 16 MPG or slightly better if I take it easy and stay on the highway with no off roading. (Like that is gonna happen.)
I live in Phoenix Arizona and that was another reason to buy another Wrangler. There are TONS of places to go off roading out here. The problem is I would say about 60% of require your Jeep to be modded out. Some of the trails out here are really hardcore. So if any Arizona people would like to go off roading sometime...drop me an email.....Mike
Thanks Tom, i'm gonna have to consider the gas mileage aspect, after hearing prices are expected to soar this summer. Prices are only $1.50-$1.60 in central N.J, but prices are slowly climbing. (Seems to be relatively cheap compared to some other states i've been through lately though)

Gas is just as expensive as it has been and the radio was talking about it going up again. I think I'll have to take out a loan just to afford to get to work and back - I sure wish I lived in central N.J. It's been running well over $2.00 per gallon.
Yea i agree that the bigger tires are great looking on a wrangler. I think i'm going to have to go with the 31" muds because eventually, i want a 2" or maybe 3" lift installed (depends how much i'm willing to spend), i figured i'd just go with the 31" muds so when i do put the lift in it'll fit the car a lot better then it would with 30" tires. I'm most likely going to put the spacers in, just to be safe from rubbing the tires.
Tom i was reading the bfg muds can handle poorly in wet conditions, and sometimes hydroplane. I read about 50 different opinions about the muds, about 15 of them saying they had some trouble in wet conditions, but otherwise they said they loved them. Just curious what you think about them. Man, I just plain slow down enough when there is a chance of standing water in the driving lanes or when the pavement is slippery that I could probably get where I'm going on racing slicks. (Well, that might be a SLIGHT exaggeration.)
What I mean is that I keep the lateral g forces down in cornering and keep the speed down enough that I shouldn't hydroplane, or would at least be going slow enough to recover if I did hydroplane. I don't push the envelope, in other words.
You couldn't get me to speed up under those conditions if you gave me the uncontested best rain tire in the world.
Having said all that, I have heard it both ways about BFG Muds on wet roads... some people saying no problem, and some folks saying they are not good. I think driving style makes all the difference.
Hey, does anybody know what/where a propeller shaft boot is? I had my 03 TJ at the service dept of the dealership for some routine maintenance work, and was told on pickup that my propeller shaft boot was cracked and should be replaced, along with my bent controller arm (which I knew of). I was in a rush at that time, so I didn't have a chance to have them point out to me what exactly they were talking about. Upon running this through a couple of my jeep buds, neither of them had heard of a propeller shaft boot (but they have YJs....), and they think this may be some bogus money making ploy. Anybody know anything about this part?
I have my TB pictures up at Webshots now. It is ony 23 of almost 200 pictures. I have others and if I find some other nice ones, I'll throw em up there.
I also have a YJ and they don't have the "propeller shaft boot." However, the TJ's do have them. This boot is located where the rear driveshaft comes out of the transfer case, covering the slip yoke. On the YJ's the slip yoke is exposed to the elements. It shouldn't be an expensive repair and one most anybody can do themselves.
Well I'm out $500 due to my damn taxes and the fact that my parents are claiming me this year. Since I'm being claimed I'm getting back $40 and change from the feds but I owe the state $140 and change. If I got to claim myself I would be getting back $350 from the feds and another $40 from the state. Funny how that's 500 diff and my mom responds with $100 isn't much to you. Funny I look at it as $400 I'm not getting. Sorry I know this has nothing to do with the topic of discussion but I had to vent.
I'll make it fit. That's the difference between me getting my half doors now, and me not getting them until sometime after summer. Guess I didn't really want them anyway.
I don't know the arrangements that you have with your parents, but if you are living at home, isn't it worth that $500 as opposed to paying rent and utilities, and buying groceries? You didn't say whether or not you pay any kind of rent to your folks. If not, then you are getting a great deal for $500.
Anyway, I know it is disappointing, since you were counting on getting something for that Jeep.
Oh well, hope you can find some extra cash somewhere to allow you to get what you want for the Jeep.

Also how can you tell you have the 7 speaker with the subwoofer..all i counted was 4 speakers in my jeep...by the way i bought it used and the guy who was selling was out of town so his parents were the ones that sold it to me,,and they had no idea what they were selling to me. Hey Tom. Yeah I pay rent, I pay for most of the food I eat, and all of my insurances (health, dental, car). The only reason that I'm not out on my own at this point is b/c being a bartender the money isn't comepletely steady and I couldn't afford to have 2 bad weeks in a row. Once I get myself a full time day job or another bartending gig I'll be out in a few months and my parents already know.

I've got a 2000 TJ. I've got around 54k miles on it, and haven't run into any problems. As far as I know, the only real problem with the 2000 is the TSB about the debris shield that needs to be added to the engine. There is a place where leaves and other debris can collect, which could catch fire from the engine heat (next to the block). This one seems (to me) to be such a theoretical problem that I've yet to go in to get it fixed.
The only other thing is that I didn't see what model the 2000 was - if it has the 4 banger with the auto, it is going to be a DOG! The 4 with a manual is slow on road, especially at higher speeds, but is acceptable. The auto and 4 are painfully slow on the road. (Off roading wont' be a problem at all.) I imagine you already know this, but it never hurts to add to the mix.

I have a 97 TJ with the 4banger(but a manual) and it struggles at 60+, unless I have a tailwind and am going downhill.

I hear you on the K&N. I have one in my Grand Cherokee and had one in my Civic. It improved the mileage on the Civic by a couple mpg. But for offroading, I would definitely keep the good ol' factory filters in there. If I did end up with this TJ, I would use the K&N on the road. I keep em nice and moist.

I have a 99 Sahara that had the stock Grizzly rims 15x7's with the 30" wrangler GSA's. I just went with 31x10.5x15 MTR's in December.I know that the rim size is different than the Ruby's 15 vs 16 but my impressions driving with the soft top are that the MTR's are pretty close in noise level at highway speeds to the GSA's.Off road performance is much much better(understatement) with the MTR's than the "Get Stuck Always" tires that were on before.

I bought a new 97 kept it for 5 years and I decided that I wanted to go in another direction. I bought an 01 Audi A4...after not liking that I bought a 02 Audi TT. While it was a nice vehicle and I did love it...I just could not stop admiring a Jeep everytime I passed one. Well long story short, the Audi is gone and now I am back in a 04 Wrangler sport...nicely equiped may I add. I must say that it just feels "right" to be back in the only vehicle that I ever been truly happy with. Anyways here is what I got and the price...

We hit most of the fun spots that I like to go to while I am at Turkey Bay, and Paul really had a good time. Heck, I even let Paul drive Thelma Jane through Bronco Gully!
Paul took tons of pics during the day, so when he gets them posted, he can share them with us. He uses webshots, I think. He will also post them in Gill's gallery.

I have the BFG Mud Terrains in the 31 x 10.50 size, and I like them fine. I do have a 2" lift, but I used to run 31 x 10.50 All Terrains with no lift. There was no problem running like that.
Some people need to add a washer or two to their steering stops to prevent rubbing on the control arms at full turn. This wasn't necessary in my case.
The rubbing on control arms or on spring perches is a backspacing issue. Most factory Jeep wheels are backspaced about 5" or 5.5". Less backspacing would pull the tires outward, away from the frame. This would give more clearance on the inside, but would make the tires stick out more. I now have 15" x 8" AR767 wheels with 4" backspacing. This gives me plenty of room on the inside and makes those 31 x 10.50 Muds stick out past the flares about an inch and a half. I like the looks with the tires sticking out like that.

It would be hard to say how much each mod took away from gas mileage, Billy. I carry lots of extra weight with the Kilby gas tank skid, the rocker guards, the winch, and two sets of tools in the back.
There's no doubt that the 31 x 10.50 Muds are gonna take their toll on gas mileage, but I would say not more than a couple MPG. I can still get about 16 MPG or slightly better if I take it easy and stay on the highway with no off roading. (Like that is gonna happen.)

Gas is just as expensive as it has been and the radio was talking about it going up again. I think I'll have to take out a loan just to afford to get to work and back - I sure wish I lived in central N.J. It's been running well over $2.00 per gallon.
I'm most likely going to put the spacers in, just to be safe from rubbing the tires.
Tom i was reading the bfg muds can handle poorly in wet conditions, and sometimes hydroplane. I read about 50 different opinions about the muds, about 15 of them saying they had some trouble in wet conditions, but otherwise they said they loved them. Just curious what you think about them. Thanks a lot..

What I mean is that I keep the lateral g forces down in cornering and keep the speed down enough that I shouldn't hydroplane, or would at least be going slow enough to recover if I did hydroplane. I don't push the envelope, in other words.
You couldn't get me to speed up under those conditions if you gave me the uncontested best rain tire in the world.
Having said all that, I have heard it both ways about BFG Muds on wet roads... some people saying no problem, and some folks saying they are not good. I think driving style makes all the difference.

Also how can you tell you have the 7 speaker with the subwoofer..all i counted was 4 speakers in my jeep...by the way i bought it used and the guy who was selling was out of town so his parents were the ones that sold it to me,,and they had no idea what they were selling to me. So i didn't know all the specs...All his parents could say was it had big tires:)
