Sounds like a great Jeep. Ballparking the numbers, I'd say you did pretty well on price. Mine out the door was just north of $22k (I was at $200 over invoice) and I didn't get some of the expensive options you did like Auto and dual tops. The Maryland Creepers is a really active offroad Jeep club that you son may want to look into. They generally go to GWNF to go offroading and have everythign from stock to built Jeeps.
Great job on the new Jeep! Wish I had parents like you when I was in college (I had to buy my first car when I got my first full time job after college). He'll love the dual tops! As a college kid he'll probably have lots of friends to help him take the hard top off when he wants to.
They can say what they like about the performance of these trucks, but in the end, what do they always compare them too? A Jeep Wrangler, which is still, IMHO, the best looking off-roader out there and the only one that allows the driver to go topless and doorless.

To all on the east coast and other places - you can feel sorry for me. My Wrangler's A/C needs servicing and I figured I wouldn't bother getting fixed until spring. I'm now regretting that decision because I had to drive it to work yesterday and today. I work in West LA and it is in the 80s. I have to drive through the San Fernando Valley to get home and they are predicting 90 for a high there. So all of you with snow, rain and cold weather - enjoy it and feel sorry for me sweating it out here in LA...
A/C is almost as useful in cold weather as in hot. It's air CONDITIONING and one of its important functions is to remove moisture. In cold weather this will mean quicker defogging and a more comfortable enviroment in the Jeep. Warm dry air is much nicer than warm damp air :-)
I remember experiencing damp air a number of years ago when I lived in North Carolina, and yes, warm damp air is miserable. I forgot about that - we don't get much humidity.

Found a web applet that says I need a 37 tooth. I also found a shop that will calibrate and do the gear for $45. To me it is worht it to know it is right and done correctly.
On another note, I never realized that my dome light could come on when the door opens... Turns out that if you remove fuse #4 you defeat that function as well as the headlights left on warning tone. Since my jeep is used it is obvious (now) to me that the previous owner must have run with the doors off so he had to remove the fuse so the dome light would not stay on all of the time!
I tell you the internet is so helpful in this stuff! Someone else has usually already blaed a trail for us and therefore makes it easier for us.
A slick little tip I read about the #4 fuse is to take a really small zip tie that is narrow enough to fit between the blades of the fuse and cinch it around the fuse as a "handle". Snip it off, leaving 3/4" or so and it makes it MUCH easier to pull or replace the fuse without needing a puller. This was nice at the beach, when I was taking the doors off and on with some frequency.
Calling all new 4 cylinder (2003) Wrangler owners! C'mon, I know we have to have some people here who have bought the new 4 cylinder wrangler. I have owned two 4 banger TJ's in the past (I now have a 6 cylinder) and I am dying to know how much more "pep" is in the new engine. Let us know how it does on the highway, uphill, RPM's in driving situations, etc... and compare (if you can) how it stacks up against the old engine.
I just got home from buying a 97 Jeep Wrangler Sport, and boy do I love it. I owned a 94 Wrangler up to last monday but I was in an accident and it was totaled. Are there any major problems that I should expect from a 97?
Does anyone know a way to put a switch on the inside dome light? (2000 Sport) I open the tailgate/rear window in the dark and don't have a manual switch on the light. Do the newest models have a switch? Thanks for the help. Larry
Congratulations on the 97! Boy, some people will do ANYTHING to upgrade to a newer Jeep! Glad you survived the accident, even though your old Jeep didn't.
The only thing I can remember hearing about as being a common defect on the 97's is that the exhaust manifolds were notorious for cracking.I think there was even a recall on them for that, so maybe yours has been changed already.

Well at lest you're driving yours. Three weeks ago a deer try to stop me by running out in front of my Jeep and Old Red is still in the shop. I was told that it would be at less the first week in December before he ready to come home. Talk about jeep withdrawal. Have a Great Day Walt
About 6 months after I got mine new it got intimately aquainted with a Toyota truck and the wall of the I405. I took it to M2 Collision (which I found out that Edmunds uses when their long term vehicles get banged up - my insurance company suggested them) and it seemed like forever before I got it back. We rented a Cherokee for 4 weeks (the Toyota driver's insurance was paying) and that helped, but I sure missed my Wrangler!
My latest problem is thanks to my hiking buddy. Since it is rarely humid I tend to be too casual when my Golden Retriever heads home from hiking all wet and muddy. I think my back carpet is now mildewed. The smell only showed up the last couple of days since it has been so hot. Any suggestions, or should I just replace the carpet?
I had a similar problem when a cooler overturned and I didn't dry it out enough. The following worked for me:
- pull the carpet out and hit it with a mild solution of detergent mixed in warm water. - let it sit for 15 min or so. - rinse the carpet REALLY well and let it dry in the sun for a day or two if possible. - Spray liberally with your favorite scent of Lysol to kill anything that's left.
I also found a spray on product at Pep Boys that worked really well without all the work decribed above. I'll check the name tonight.
If none of that works, Jeep carpet is pretty cheap to replace!
I use Lysol mildew remover went my carpet gets wet and I don't dry it out soon enough, (I also used my jeep on the farm). Just dry and spray, it works great, and smell good too. Walt
I think I'll try the detergent/Lysol route (cheap) - doesn't sound like much of a big deal. If it was going to be some long process I wouldn't bother. As pointed out, I knew how easy it was to replace the carpet. Another reason to own a Wrangler - if the same thing happened in the Taco I'd have a real problem!
Thanks for the warm welcome. I think I may have ran into my first small problem. Today it rained all day while I was at work and I left my Jeep at home. When I got home today I found a puddle of water in the drivers side floor. It is leaking through the two corners of the drivers side window. Is there anything that I can do other than pull the window and try to bend it inwards, because that doesn't seem to work. Other than the water I love it!!!!!! The 4.0 is well worth the extra money. I can't wait for the first full blown North-west Indiana snow fall!!!!!!!

for your doors you can buy new ones at www.quadratec.com the doors are the same for all tj's sport or se . the new ones are like $1500.00 . not cheep . after that you have to get them painted .

But now that it is more than just me a some buddies, I would like to improve and do it with a little more confidence.

Any SUV that I would buy needs to be a good off-roader! Period! I'm talking about atleast Rubicon. Its make no sense to buy a SUV and not take the vehicle off-road. This vehicle combines everything I need: Great Off-Road and Great On-Road. For me driving is a SPORT.
Porsche is doing something that will be follow through the car industry. A Hummer H1 cost $100K+, but how about taking the Hummer around a highway off ramp at 50 miles a hour...NOT I. With the new VW SUV, which is a joint venture with Porsche. This is the future of SUV. Even Volvo XC90 has good handling on-road without turning over.
When you see a Cayenne on the road, remember it is NOT just another SUV...
$15K, $25K, $45K, $55K, $70K or $100K+ vehicles are no difference to me. These vehicles all have wheels, tires, steering wheel, seats, paint, and etc. In some people minds this is true, but not all!

Those dome shaped push lights for attics and so forth would attach great to the tailgate.
Usually, the "leave it out in the sun and wind for a few days" trick works for me.
A lot of people just rip out their carpet and leave it out.
I sometimes put the dog bed in back so she has a little cushioning from the seat and seatbelt brackets (some people remove all the brackets, too.

with the 33's and 4.56's my speedo was WAY off.
At 55 MPH it was reading 64! 9 MPH error.
It got worse as speed increased to the point that I was indicating 95 MPH when I was in 5th at 3000 RPM (bout 75-80 mph).
The online applets said I needed a 37 tooth speedo gear but the shop put in a 39. Now at 55 my speedo says 56. So I am much happier now.
I am glad I went to a calibration shop instead of trusting the 37 tooth recommended by the applet.
This new Porsche is a fantastic car but does not even come close to competing in the same market as a Wrangler.
Most people who buy the Cayanne would not even imaging taking it off road.
Besides I could have 4 tj's for that price!!
I don't envision too many "average" people hitting the strip mines in their 50+k rig (but then again, some of your Jeep mods don't come cheap).
