Toyota Camry Navigation System

Then a general question (am planning to buy a Prius this weekend in the US and take it sometime later to Europe):

The Toyota Prius uses a Garmin data DVD under the passenger seat. Is it generally impossible to substitute a European data DVD? Some US dealers are apparently telling folks they simply go to a European dealer for a new DVD-rom.
  • navguy1navguy1 Member Posts: 181
The navigation computer underneath the drivers seat is built to US specifications for Toyota by Denso... not Garmin. The European navigation computer is built by Aisin.

Since the Aisin navigation ECU uses a different operating system the DVD-ROM in Europe will not be compatible with US spec'd computer.

Thanks for the correction (it is Denso-made, am now told the data is from NavTech) - completely different from the European prius.

The point is whether any Denso or Navtech data set could be purchased/substituted to make the US-market Prius GPS operable on another continent. If you hear of anything, I'm all ears & probably not the only one. In the meantime, here's a thread on the Prius DVD-rom & its contents.

I am having the same kind of problems with my Garmin c 340 and my new Toyota Camry XLE. Did you recieve any solution to the problem? Thanks.

Hello ... I have a 2007 Camry XLE with the DVD Navigation system. Does anyone know what the latest version of the navigation DVD is and when a new one might be available?

    Thanks,
    Manny

Version 6.1 is the current disc. Version 7.1 will be released between now and January 1st, 2008.

Sounds great. Do I have to go to a Toyota dealer? Is the price cheaper elsewhere?

    Thanks again,
    Manny

Each Toyota or Lexus dealer is able to set their own pricing so shop around.

We have just gotten the new Camry Hybrid ( about 2 months ago). I have a Garmin nuvi in my car. What can we do to get Toyota to realize that their navigation system is awful? The user interface needs a degree...nothing is intuitive or obvious...or perhaps the nuvi just spoilt me!!!
How can we get Toyota's attention?
  • mdchachimdchachi Member Posts: 275
Take the time to learn it. Get an advanced degree while you're at it. :P

If you have any questions, ask them here.

I have gotten nothing but runaround from my local dealer (ditto for Toyota 800 Customer Service number...they referred me back to dealer)

    Question 1:
When will the new updated version be available and at what cost. Nobody can give me anything but vague answer.
    Question 2
Can I just buy the disk in put it in myself, or is this a dealer only process.
    Question 3
Is is worthwhile to update my onboard GPS or does it make more sense to give up and buy portable system from Garmin or someone
  • satch3satch3 Member Posts: 2
I just checked and the dealer can order, but they want $295.00 for the update DVD. If you find it cheaper somewhere else please let me know. It is Version 7.1
  • mdchachimdchachi Member Posts: 275
I'm not familiar with that system but I think it's just a matter of popping in the DVD yourself.

As for whether or not it's worth it... the question is what kind of problems are you are having? If you are missing roads and POIs (as I'd expect with a map disk that old), then I would think the system would be dramatically improved. My understanding is that the dealer sets the retail price so call around to different dealers and look for the best price.
  • christine27106christine27106 Member Posts: 12
    What dealer?
I was told a few months ago $200, last week when I started this frustrating journey...they said $300. And when I asked for Service to see if I can "self-install" no one had a clue.
  • satch3satch3 Member Posts: 2
I am in Denver, CO and Burt Toyota Parts department is who I have been talking to. According to the manual, all you have to do is put the disk in and it will do the update for you, but I think the price is way to high. I am trying to talk the leasing company I got my car into buying a disk and sharing it with all their customers. No luck in that path yet. Have a great day.

I recently purchased a 2007 Camry SE with a navigation system. The system was equipped with a navigation disc that was 2 years old. Checking with Toyota, I was advised that the disc was upgraded every year, obviously that is not happening. Even the 2008 nav systems that I checked were out of date, making the disc three years old. In contacting Toyota, I was referred to the dealership, and ultimately told me that there was nothing they would do. I was advised by Toyota and the dealer that the new disc came out the first of November and could be upgraded for a cost of $250. Bottom line, if you want a navigation system for your vehicle, invest in a good Garmin system fro a lot less money.
  • christine27106christine27106 Member Posts: 12
Yes, I am leaning in that direction, although I am not quite sure how the portable systems update the information (SIMS chip, download from where?)

What irks me--and that is why I came to this group--is that I paid $2000 extra for my car, just to have the GPS.

Now I cannot get a straight answer from Toyota, nor the dealer.

    GRRRRR
  • navguy1navguy1 Member Posts: 181
The MSRP for the DVD map disc updates are $250. Check with different dealers to find the best price.

You can install the DVD map disc yourself. The navigation computer is located in the trunk on the drivers side. Simply slide the lever to the right and push the button to eject the DVD map disc.

The newest version is now available at Toyota dealerships.

    00110-DVD07-GEN5 (86271-53022)
    00110-DVD07-GEN4 (86271-33047)
    00110-DVD07-CY (GEN3) (86271-33037)
    00110-DVD07-AVLN3 (2007-2008 Avalons ONLY)
  • mdchachimdchachi Member Posts: 275
How can you tell it's two years old? Is it two versions behind the current one?
  • christine27106christine27106 Member Posts: 12
There is a version number on the sign on screen
  • hauptlagerhauptlager Member Posts: 1
I have a navigation CD from my 2006 Camry. The Camry was totaled, so I thought I'd let my spouse have the CD since his is from a 2005 Avalon. Since the CDs are made for Toyota cars I don't think that he should have a problem using it. Any thoughts. :confuse:
  • mdchachimdchachi Member Posts: 275
I know but how can you associate the version # with a date to know that it's two years old? All I see is a version #.
  • mdchachimdchachi Member Posts: 275
Unfortunately that won't work. The disks are not compatible. The Avalon system is different than Camry. However you could probably sell it on ebay.
  • christine27106christine27106 Member Posts: 12
    How much?
Mine is version 2002...so it would be a big improvement!
  • christine27106christine27106 Member Posts: 12
After reading the responses here, I talked to the lady who sold me my car back in 2002, she is usually very good and very responsive. She called me back: she could not get a straight answer from the Service Department either, as far as what would be involved in slipping the new disk in for my navigation system. However, she said she ordered the disk...none in stock at Modern Toyota in Winston-Salem. I have now waited two weeks, still no call.

Does anyone have a clue why this is becoming such a hassle?
Does anyone know what is involved--clearly Modern Toyota does not.
  • navguy1navguy1 Member Posts: 181
If you have a 2002 LC you need 00110-DVD07-CY to update your navigation system. Any Toyota dealer can order the DVD map disc update. Lastly, call around for best pricing.
  • christine27106christine27106 Member Posts: 12
    My model is an LXE
As I mentioned, after seeing that the disk should be in, I phone about two weeks ago. they did promise to order...nothing, nada, no information

I have been dealing with the same problem for about six months. I purchased a 2007 Camry while in the US but now live in Germany. I was wondering if you have found a solution yet. It's a shame to have an excellent navigation system that cannot be used while I am in Europe. I would be interested in hearing from you or anyone else that can be of assistance.

I am still not quite prepared to make a stink at HQ, but you might want to contact Toyota Germany. Do you have someone who speaks German to wade through the maze? Do none of the local dealer have the DVD? You would be ok to use an older model, roads change very, very little in Germany over the years, certainly not to the extent that they do in the USA.

And apropos nothing, I am German born and I desperately envy your "I live in Germany" statement. Want to trade?

does anybody know the by pass code for the nav system to be able to program it while your moving.
  • christine27106christine27106 Member Posts: 12
You cannot do it, they specifically block that to keep you safe and your eyes on the road (and out of law suits)

I have version 6.1 of the DVD and the "joystick" version (i.e. not touch screen) of the Nav. system.

Here is how you do it:

You have to accept the initial warning first, then you follow the steps below (at any time, even while driving).

    1. Press "Menu" button
    2. Select "DVD", this will show you the version of the DVD.
    3. In the joystick, press the arrows in this sequence.
    a. Up
    b. Down
    c. Up
    d. Down
    e. Left
    f. Right
    4. You should now have the "Service" menu on the screen.
    5. Go to override and HOLD the select button down until it changes color (maybe it beeps too, I have sound turned off so I don't know).
    6. Press the "Back" button

This will allow you to enter addresses while driving and all other options normally greyed out. The procedure must be repeated every time you start the car, but it only takes a few seconds.

I hope someone finds this information useful, just remember, dont do this while driving, it is for the passenger.

(If this has already been posted I apologize, but I really could not find it anywhere else.)

I have the same issue, moving to Germany (Grafenwoehr) next month with my 2007 Camry XLE and need to get the GPS updated. I tried the SCIS link but all I got was a red screen. Where should I look to price (find, even) these GPS discs?

I recently took my 2002 Camry to the dealer to get the catalytic converter replaced. When I got it back, the Navigation touch screen would not work. It powers up and is on, but it will not let you select "i accept" at the warning screen. The touch screen will not do anything. The dealer told me that there is nothing they can do, that they did not cause it to stop working. I have never had a problem with the navigation up to this point. I don't want to spend $4,000 to replace it on a 2002 car.

I am wondering if there is a way to reset this? Are there any other things I can try that might correct this?

    Any ideas/suggestions are appreciated.

FYI - Toyota just released the new V9.1 for $199 on September 1st.
  • navguy1navguy1 Member Posts: 181
First, what is not working? AM, FM, CD, cassette, motorized panel or just navigation? IF it is just the navigation portion of the system the navigation computer must be replaced. The dealership can order a remanufactured unit (1 year warranty) to replace the failed unit in your vehicle from Denso.

IF it is audio related then the unit in the dash must be replaced. The model number of the unit in the dash is 1700XX; I cant remember the last 2 digits. For this unit, the dealership can order a remanufactured unit from Fujitsu Ten or FTEN.

    I hope this will help.

Does anyone else have this problem? I have a new Camry and and it only displays the map at all times and nothing else. It will not just display say for instance the radio stations (audio) at all times. It automatically just goes off if it is not in the map mode. I hate this. I even asked at the dealer and he said it is for safety reasons. I would not have gotten the navigation system if had know this. I do not like driving around with a map on at all times, if it is not needed, nor do I like driving around with a blank screen. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you.
  • christine27106christine27106 Member Posts: 12
You can turn it off easily. Tap Display and select "off" which blanks out the Nav screen
  • leoyellowleoyellow Member Posts: 3
Thank you so much for responding, but I have tried that. When I select off in the Nav screen, the screen goes blank. Even if I press the Audio button, it only displays the radio stations for 20 seconds and then goes blank. I am wondering if there is a way to override that and just have the Audio always displayed when nothing else needs to be displayed. i.e, bluetooth, backup camera, etc. or is the system defective.
  • acco20acco20 Member Posts: 211
leoyello, try this......Press info button.....press screen settings......at the top it will say "transition from audio to nav etc"......press off....press ok....now the screen will stay most places you leave it,for example, am, fm1, fm2, etc.....have fun and enjoy the nav system....
  • acco20acco20 Member Posts: 211
leoyellow....have you read message #156......did you make it work???
  • leoyellowleoyellow Member Posts: 3
acco20....Sorry I didn't answer sooner. I ended up going back to my salesman and he figured out how to fix it. This is how it works on the system that I have:
Press Set-up, Press General, Press Auto Screen Change - this has to be OFF, otherwise if this is ON, it keeps going back to the navigation screen.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer my question. I really appreciate it.
