CHRISTINA, I JUST GOT OFF THE PHONE WITH THE DEALER. HE SAID A NUMBER OF THINGS CAN CAUSE THIS, SO I HAVE NO REAL ANSWER. I AM NOT HAPPY WITH HOW THEY ARE FIXING THE PROBLEM. THEY ARE GOING TO REBUILD THE TRANSMISSION INSTEAD OF REPLACING IT. REBUILDS ARE NEVER AS GOOD AS NEW AND AT 39000 MILES THIS TRANSMISSION SHOULD STILL BE AS GOOD AS NEW. WE HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT TRADING OUR COLBALT FOR ANOTHER G6 BUT THIS HAS CHANGED OUR MINDS FOR SURE. :(

Past 3 yr-36K your chances of getting a new transmission are slim to none.
  • hapywifehapywife Member Posts: 8
WELL I MUST BE IN THE SLIM AREA CAUSE THE DEALER CALLED FRIDAY AND SAID THEY HAVE THE APPROVAL TO PUT IN A NEW ONE BECAUSE IT IS CHEAPER THAN TO REBUILD ALL THE PARTS IN THE OLD ONE SO THANK GOD I REALLY DIDN'T WANT A REBUILD

I bought my '06 G6 brand new in '05....problems galore. At 30000 miles, I had to spend nearly $2000 for repairs. Of course I contacted GM, who essentially told me that I was on my own. Now, I've got a clunking noise in the steering, after already having invested in a new steering rack. One rear speaker doesn't work all the time, and the interior plastics, primarily the visor mirror covers, are junk. This was the first GM car I have ever owned, and rest assured, it will be my last.
  • hapywifehapywife Member Posts: 8
i'm sorry you had such bad luck with your '06. after transmission replacement, we left for north Carolina on 8/13 not one problem, came bad last night and same thing it is running good. but i wanted to tell you that some one told me that if 3 major repairs are done within the warranty that the lemon law should come into play. so you may want to check this out. not sure if what i was told is true but maybe it is and could help you.

I recently had my transmission fluid and filter replaced on my 06 G-6 and now seems like the transmission is slipping. The car has 132K miles on it and this is the first time I have ever serviced the transmission.

I recently bought my Pontiac G6 from a dealer and unfortunately my car is experiencing a whining during acceleration and well as some kind of noise coming from the front while trying to turn. I am pretty upset because the car is under 30k miles and obviously out of the 3 yr 36K mile warranty and now I have to pay to fix these issues. That is ridiculous! Why cant GM take care of these issues especially since I have not even made my first payment yet? When I bought the car I was told I still had over 70k worth of warranty left. But now I have discovered that these issues are not covered under the power-train warranty. I am very unhappy

I HAVE AN 2009 G6. WHEN MY TRANSMISSION WENT OUT I CALLED THE PONTIAC DIVISION OF GENERAL MOTORS. THEY ASK MY DEALER NAME. THEY CALLED THE DEALER AND KEEP ME INFORMED ON THE REPAIR STATUS. THEY GOT THE DEALER IN GEAR TO GET IT FIXED. AT LEAST U HAVE A SOUND TO GO BY TO KNOW SOMETHING IS WRONG, MINE JUST STOPPED. THE GEARS WERE ALL BLOWN APART ON THE INSIDE. THEY WERE GOING TO REBUILD. I TOLD PONTIAC DIV. I DID NOT WANT A REBUILD. IT WASN'T REBUILD WHEN I BOUGHT IT 39000 MILES EARLIER. IT RUNS GREAT AGAIN NO PROBLEMS YET ALSO THERE IS A LAW SOMEWHERE THAT AFTER 3 MAJOR PROBLEMS THE CAR IS CLASSIFIED AS A LEMON

I have a 2007 G6 Convertible with the 3.9L engine and 4 speed automatic. In the past 8 months or so it has developed an intermittent problem with the transmission. I will have come to a complete stop and the transmission will not have down shifted to first. It doesn't seem to matter how long I have stopped. It can be a few seconds to a minute. When I accelerate it will down shift to first with a clunk. The distance/time until it down shifts varies. The longer it takes the harder the shift. I have taken it in twice to the local former Pontiac dealer. The first time they had it for a day. The second time I took it in I was going on vacation for almost a week. Neither time have they been able to replicate the problem. This second time they did discover a leaking water pump and replaced it under the power train warranty so I assume they are doing something to try to discover the problem. There aren't any codes or check engine lights or anything. I've never had problem in manual mode but I don't use that very often. The only time I have a shifting problem is from a dead start. It down shifts fine when I pass somebody.

Does anybody have any ideas or suggestion or possibly had or heard of the problem?

Thank you for posting this, Ocalag6htc,

Thank you for being willing to work with our dealerships, and I'm sorry to hear that the problem wasn't able to be replicated while in their care. As we do need to duplicate the concern in order to make a diagnosis, should things resurface and you decide to go back into the dealership we're available to help you work with them towards resolving this concern.

A delayed down shift should lead the dealership some where. Could be bad connector, lots of corrosion problems on G6 and Malibu electrical connectors.
  • jpfjpf Member Posts: 496
Have you had the transmission serviced (i.e. fluid and filter service)?
  • bobscar1bobscar1 Member Posts: 2
Having the same problem as this, two dealer changed my trans fluid, and told me to bring it back if the problem remains. Can you tell me if the problem was ever found?, if so, what they found.
  • gmcustsvcsarahgmcustsvcsarah Member Posts: 1,964
Unfortunately, I don't have information as to whether or not the problem was found in this instance (I respond to the posts here, and another Customer Service Representative responds to emails and handles cases). Would you like for us to work with you towards diagnosing this with your dealership? If so, please get in touch via email with more information, including: your name/Edmunds username, phone and address, the last 8 of yoru VIN and current mileage, and the name of your dealership.
    Thank you for your patience,

Yes I've had the transmission serviced. They did that on the first visit. Most of the mechanics I've talked to suspect a bad solenoid.

This message is for GM Customer Service or any one who can answer. I bought my G6 about 11 months ago with 27,000 mi and it's been great. Last week at 39,00 mi it started to act up at about 40 mph when in high gear at a slow acceleration prior to kicking into a lower gear. The issue is that it jerks or feels like the engine is missing until I give it more gas to down shift. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this? It seems strange that the engine would only miss at this point so I am suspecting it may be the transmission? Is this a sign that the tranny is going out already?
  • gmcustsvcsarahgmcustsvcsarah Member Posts: 1,964
The transmission may be a possible cause, but having the vehicle looked into in general wouldn't be a bad idea. If we can assist in working with a dealership, please contact us via email with more information (please include your name/Edmunds username, the last 8 of your VIN and current mileage, and the name of your dealership). My coworker Christina will advise you from there!

Just wanted to update you on this issue; it turned out to be a miss on one of the cylinders with the engine under load, not the transmission. Don't know what is causing it yet though?

My 2008 Pontiac G6 GT is doing this exact same thing. I am afraid its the transmission. :( I just spent $900 on new tires last month so I'm hoping this repair isn't expensive! Did you ever find out what was wrong with yours?

    Thanks,
    Abby

You have a 5 year 100K warranty on drive train, your covered.
  • gmcustsvcsarahgmcustsvcsarah Member Posts: 1,964
As gonogo mentioned, you are likely still within the powertrain warranty. If we can get you the specific parameters of your warranty, please get us the last 8 digits of your VIN in an email and we'll get you that information!

Car had to be towed to dealer last Friday even though it has less than 25,000 miles. I was told that the clutch assembly and fly wheel needed to be replaced at a cost of nearly $2,200. According to my contract I have a 6 yr./75,000 mile warranty, yet the dealer is telling me that API (the warranty carrier) says repair is not covered. I would really like to hear from GM Customer Services for advice on how to proceed. There is no way that the clutch should have burned out so soon. The car is driven by my 63 year old wife, so you can rest assured there wasn't any hot rodding.
  • gmcustsvcsarahgmcustsvcsarah Member Posts: 1,964
    Good morning,
I'm sorry that your G6 had to be towed in on Friday! Looking at API's website, it seems that there are different extended service contracts, from PremierCare (the most comprehensive) to the Premier Powertrain contract, which would cover items like the engine, waterpump, and transfer case. Do you recall which service contract you purchased? And when you purchased the service contract, did you receive any information as to what would be covered? As this is a third-party service, I don't have access to many resources on it aside from what is available at their website. It does appear that you can log into an account with their website to learn more: http://www.apiprotection.com/

We would be happy to get a Service Request set up for you, from which point we would contact your dealership to find out more about what's going on, and would likely escalate it to your District Specialist. If you're interested in this, please send us an email that includes the following information: your name and Edmunds username, contact information (phone and address), the last 8 digits of your VIN and current mileage, and the name of your involved dealership. It may also be helpful to include a link to this page as my coworker Christina responds to the incoming emails and it would help her find the post.

We look forward to hearing from you,
    Sarah

My 2007 G6 has 89000 miles on it. Last 8 digits of vin is 74190763. Am I under warranty for a tranmission problem?
  • gmcustsvcsarahgmcustsvcsarah Member Posts: 1,964
    Good morning, rlarndt,

Thank you for posting the last 8 digits of your VIN - I checked into the warranty status of your vehicle and see that your warranty expired on 01/29/2012 (though you're under the mileage of expiration: 100,040 MI). I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing a transmission concern, and believe that I may have seen your email come in. As this expiration was so very recent, that is definitely a factor we'd take into account. My coworker Christina should respond to your email either today or tomorrow with more information.

About two weeks ago I noticed very rare sporadic changes in power that only last for a second. Just long enough to catch me off guard.
The last time it happened I was going around 40mph and had taken my foot completely off the accelerator, sort of coasting to an upcoming red light. While coasting there was a moment where the engine sounded like I had pressed the accelerator briefly. I didn’t have time to check the tach and see if there was a change there. It didn’t actually increase in speed, but it was enough to make me think something was not right. Other times I might notice differences in throttle response after driving a set speed (40mph), slowing (but not stopping), then accelerating again. It seems to accelerate much easier on occasion. It is a problem that is very difficult to describe and I know if I go to a dealer with this they will not be able to reproduce it because it doesn’t happen often.
I have also noticed that the idle may feel a tiny bit different from one stop to the next. Just a little rougher than “normal” but barely enough to notice. If I hadn’t have been observant due to the other things, I would have likely not even realized it was doing it.
I do use E85 pretty much exclusively now, and have for the last 2 months or so. Prior to that I was alternating fuel types. I know E85 can affect throttle response, power, and acceleration so perhaps this is a factor. Since its an 09, I know I’m still within the powertrain warranty. I believe the extended warranty I purchased when I bought it used Just ran out in the last month or so. I’m not sure.
I believe I am due for a basic tune-up, I will probably do that at the end of the month. In the mean time, I may try adding half a tank of gasoline to the tank to see if I notice a change. Does anyone here have any thoughts? I was initially worried it was the transmission, but I have no idea anymore. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I see you were unsure about an "extended warranty" you had -- was this one of our General Motors Protection Plans? If so, please email us the last 8 digits of your VIN and we can get you the expiration date and mileage (if you had wanted this information).

I had the same problem with my 2006 Pontiac G6. The dealership I went to refused to help telling me it was all in my head. Go have a compression test done. It's a possibility it's the catalytic converter.. this will also throw the mass airflow censor, and O2 censor off which in turn causing the car not to shift at a high RPM.

my water pump is going, it leaks alot.. then today i was stopped at a light and went to go on green and my 2007 g6 conv. had a hard time going into gear. happened a few times on my way to work. then on my way home it reversed fine and in drive it didnt want to go into gear..so i thru it in manual and it drove fine. i am very frustrated with this car. it seems as its always something with it. endless problems. it has 80000 miles onit only. the last 8 digits of my vin are74176162... pls help.. am i under warranty still? also a message comes across as check air bags, i saw that this sensor was under recall, can i still have it replaced?

    Hello frustragedg6,

I saw in your next post that your car needed to be towed - I am so sorry that you are in this difficult situation! I checked your VIN and see that you are just outside of the powertrain warranty by time (just over a month) -- please send us an email to socialmedia@gm.com with more information (name/Edmunds username, phone and address, last 8 of your VIN and current mileage, and the name of your dealership). Have you taken it anywhere yet?

    frustratedg6,

If you were to email us that information, we could get a Service Request set up through Customer Assistance and could evaluate any available options with your dealership as they work on repairing the transmission. While I can't make any guarantees up front as to the end result of this investigation, we would be thorough.

I called the Pontiac helpline to find out if there was an active recall for my G6, last 8 of my VIN 64251730. The automated system said no there is no active recall, however I found one online issued in 2009 for an issue that causes the owner to have to use extra force to shift from park and for when you cruise control works sporadically. I am very frustrated as I would like to be able to speak or have my car seen by a mechanic without having to pay for endless diagnostics if this was a recall issue. I have googled this problem on the internet and found scores and scores of G6's with this exact issue, but cannot get a live person on the phone to discuss this issue with. Any suggestions?

    Unhappy G6 Owner,

I'm sorry that you are experiencing these difficulties with your G6. I looked up your VIN in our system and am not seeing any open recalls on your vehicle at this time.

What is your plan of action from here? We're happy to work with you through any diagnostic processes, if you like.

Was it ever fixed and was it the solenoid?
I'm bringing my '07 G6 in tomorrow for same problem. Bought the car in 2009 and have brought it back to same dealership 4 times. They have not been able to replicate the problem and no lights come on when it happens (to the best of my knowledge). It startles you when it happens...like you're being rear-ended.
