Costco is the cheapest in my area for the LTX's. (17" bodyman). Regular price $157 each installed, but they guy was nice enough to mention they will be on sale in October - save $60 on the set. They don't have them in stock at our local store, so I'll have to call ahead, but no big deal. I'll wait the few weeks for the $60.

One was announced last month. Here's a link where you can check to see if yours are covered by the recall.

I have a similar rattle coming from the driver side window on my 2003 XLT. It only rattles when the window is up all the way, and it's also intermittent, which is why I've been hesitant to take it to the dealer. It's irritating, though, because otherwise the vehicle is very quiet (IMO) for a large SUV.

Does anyone know if the '03 Expedition comes with an automatic load leveling suspension? I can not not find it anywhere in the brochure, but I remember reading it from one of the automotive magazines that it is available as an option, and it is an air spring system. Please confirm. Thanks.

Is Ford going to put a new, more powerful V8 in the 03 Expedition? If so, does anyone know when?

Enjoy the piston slap you're going to get in that new Suburban engine. Check the boards.

I have been holding off purchasing an '03 Expedition, waiting for the announcement of a new engine choice for the vehicle. I visited a Ford dealership last week and a salesman confirmed what I have heard rumors of - - a new engine for the Expedition. The salesman stated that the new engine would be Ford's 6.0 liter Power Stroke Diesel (325 HP and 550 torque). Interestingly, the salesman stated that the new engine would NOT be mated to Ford's new five speed TorqShift transmission. It was my understanding that the new 6.0 liter diesel had to be mated to the new TorqShift transmission because the other available transmissions could not handle the power of the new 6.0 diesel. There are reports that the 6.0 liter diesel was destined for the F-Series Super Duty and the Excursion -- did Ford change its mind when they pulled the plug on the Excursion and decide to place the new engine in the Expedition? I do not know -- I am hoping the salesman does. For what it is worth, I have heard the new engine will make many people re-think their mostly negative impressions of diesel engines (e.g much quieter, no smoky emissions etc.). Also, a new cutting edge diesel engine with a possible new 5 speed transmission will improve gas mileage considerably.

For those of you involved in the 17 recall read up. Ford/General will NOT replace the tires with the same size! I have 265/60-17, they will only replace with a 16" 70 series tire and reprogram my ECU. When questioned Ford dealer got rude, General buckled and directed me to their web for a downloadedable form. They offer a $110 per tire replacement check. At 8 weeks out. Take it or leave it! Like many I paid $1,200 for the Sport Package which included the unique to sport 17" rims and fat tires. Now this bait and switch.

Ford also has a "Baby Diesel" coming out. I believe it's 4.6 Liters and is slated for the F150 and Expedition. The 6.0 Diesel is for the SuperDuty's (F250, etc.) and the replacement for the Excursion. I also thought I read the 6.0 will be 575 Tourque. Don't know about the trannys.

The 03 Expedition does not have cabin air filtration either as original equipment or as dealer intalled equipment.

If you got it from a saleman, it isn't a confirmation, its another rumor.

I have a 2000 Ford Eddie Bauer Expedition with the General Grabber P275/60R17 tires. It has the 3.55 Ratio Limited Slip Axle.

The General Tires are being recalled and I would like to replace them with the Michelin P265/70R17.

Does anyone know if this can be done with the current stock wheels that came with the 2000 Ford Expedition?

Curious also if anyone has any other comments regarding these issues.

    Thanks,

Ford announced a rebate of $1,000 on '03 Expeditions. Has anyone seen anything about lease incentives? I have not been able to find a good lease deal since the residual seems to be set very low.
  • haironghairong Member Posts: 153
The first engine upgrade will be next year, it will be a 3v 5.4L V8, with power and torque matching the current Navi's DOHC V8. This engine will debut in the all new '04 F150. The 4.6L diesel won't make it next year. The 6.0L diesel have taken the full capacity (and it's not for the Expidition).

Has anyone heard about when Ford will offer a 0% rate on the 2003s?
  • zman3zman3 Member Posts: 857
The $1000 rebate thru Jan 2 was just announced Oct 1. I suspect it will be a while before they add any 0% options, but you never know. I don't know how long new car sales would have to tank before they would sweeten the deal.

Want an '03 Expy real bad. Was wondering what kind of gas mileage these rigs are getting. I will get a 4X4. I have an '01 F-150 XLT Supercab 4X4 with the Off Road Package and the 5.4 V-8. My truck has the 3.55 LS differential. With the big 17" tires it has enough power and gets about 15-16 MPG driving mixed city and highway. I know the Expy has 3.73 gears. Was just wondering.

Has anybody experienced a situation where your engine just shuts off while driving and you lose all power steering and power brakes?
  • goukcatsgoukcats Member Posts: 4
I took my 03 expy from Ky to Florida and averaged 15.5 miles/gallon on the highway. Around town, I avg. 12 to 13. Great vehicle.....so far.

I went to the dealer today to see about leasing an '03 Expedition. I was told that the current $1,000 back incentive does not apply on a lease. Is that correct?? I qualify for x-plan pricing, so I'm getting a good deal but I would like to get that $1,000 on a lease. Thanks!
  • michelleb3michelleb3 Member Posts: 1
The $1,000 should be good on a lease, in fact it should not matter. My dealership is including it on my quote and I am leasing also. Have you leased before? I have a few questions. In an earlier post you mentioned lower residuals. My salesman made this sound like a perk (more vehicle - less note.) I am also considering downloading Leasewizard before I go back to the dealership. Any thoughts???
  • homebizhomebiz Member Posts: 5
On the question of the residual - the lower the residual the more you pay. The residual is what the vehicle is expected to be worth at the end of the lease. The difference between the purchase price and the residual is the depreciation. When you lease you are paying for the portion of the car you use (the depreciation). A vehicle with a higher residual will have less depreciation and a lower lease payment. Using leasing software is a good idea because it will give you a better idea at how leasing works and will allow you to try the same variables the dealer is using (residual, money factor, etc)so that you should, in theory, come up with the same payment. If the payment is not the same it's time to start asking questions. Hope this helps.

bought a 99 Expedition brand new and it now has only 32,000 miles but the right hand head gasket has needed to be replaced twice so far. Once at 12,000 miles and then again at 30,000 miles 2 months ago.
Now the transmission has gone out, won't back up and trans fluid smells real burnt.

All in only 32,000 miles. The dealership won't even talk about causes.

Anyone know of similar problems or what I can do?

Ford's customer "hot-line" is a complete joke, absolutely useless. They won't even talk about on=going problems or root cause's of such.

Any suggestions short of setting fire to the vehicle would be appreciated.

Holy Cow thats alot of problems for such a low mileage vehicle. I too have a 1999 Expedition with the 5.4L V8 with 70,000 Miles on it and have had no problems with it knock on wood. However Ford does have an Engine/Head gasket replacement program for its 5.4L V8 engines during this year beacause of a machining error at the factory.
Here are the TSB's for the 5.4L head problems.
    TSB #
    02-2-3 Engine - Aluminum Block/Head Machining
02-1-4 Engine Head Gasket - Approved Replacement Procedures

Here is an article posted on another website.

Ford works to repair trucks' V8 head gasket
DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. is working to improve an engine defect that is causing oil leaks in some truck models. A head gasket is causing leaks from some 5.4-liter V8 truck engines, primarily in F-Series pickup trucks from the 1999 model year, Ford spokesman Todd Nissen said. The affected engines also are installed in some Ford Expeditions, Lincoln Navigators and Econoline vans.

As for the transmition...I haven't found anything on that. Do you do any towing? I think Ford recommends the Transmition fluid be changed at 30,000 miles. Still your fluid shouldn't be that bad.
I also looked at consumer reports and transmition failures for 1999 models are very rare. However the engine problem is noted.
Yikes...Hope this helps and the best of luck to you and your problematic Expedition.

You do have some problems! A place that might give you some help is www.flatratetech.com (then use the "contact us" button). They seem to be Ford mechanics and technicians who want to help. Your engine problem is very well known and documented in this forum and in the ford truck sites so you should get help for that at least. Good Luck!

If you have a Ford Expedition with a 4X4 drive it is considered a SUV? If you have a Ford Expedition with 2WD is it still a SUV or is it a big station wagon? Or is the style of the vehicle and the usage of it?

    Just Curios,
    Frankk
  • steverstever Guest Posts: 52,454
Edmunds considers it a SUV most places. But we also define a SUV as A vehicle that offers available four- or all-wheel-drive and raised ground clearance in combination with a two- or four-door wagon or convertible body. link

Finally! Ford today announced the new 5.4 3v for the Ford F150 and other trucks (expedition) early in the new year. 300hp & a 5% improvement in fuel economy. Good numbers in my book.

They mentioned the needed replacement to the current 5.4 which is pounding them in reviews as lacking power relative to the competition.

This anouncment has made my day and I will be one of the first in line.

btw, I read about it in www.detroitnews.com under the auto section.

Driver side rear flip out window shattered without any object hitting it while driving on the interstate...anyone else have this issue?
  • frankno1frankno1 Member Posts: 68
My 2003 XLT has 260 hp and 350 lbs of torque. It is rated for 8900 lbs towing (4x2). It will pull my trailer faster than is safe to tow. I don't think I need anymore horsepower because I don't think I need it. I think if I owned a Cobra and wanted to really show everything up I could then I think that a 3V engine would be the cats meow.

I can haul 8 people around in comfort and I think that is where the Expedition really shines. If Ford wants to develop something that can make all the Expeditions shine is to develop a heavy duty transmission that is strong and reliable as the engine.
    Just an opinion,
    Frankk

Just bought a new 03 EB Expy with the new $1500 rebate. When the sound is split between the front and middle seats can the middle seats listen through the speakers or only the headsets. Speaking of headsets is the Expy supposed to come equipped with the headsets? Lastly does anyone notice a crackle coming from the sub when listening to DVDs? Other than the manual recline on the seats this thing is great. It drives better than my old '00 Grand Cherokee.
  • califjohncalifjohn Member Posts: 101
may need some time to work out the bugs first. Ford is having head gasket trouble (!) with the new aviator engines and that does not bode well for the Expy either, given the head gasket/block oil leak history with this engine series. So far no trouble reported with the 3v but as far as I can tell they are not out on the road yet. For those interested Blue Oval News had this info.

I would like some details on the X Plan as well. I plan to buy an XLT Premium 4X4.

    Thanks in advance

I currently have a 2001 Expedition XLT with premium sport package,sunroof,leather,6 disc, reverse sensor's,side air bags and the 4.6 engine 4X4. Im thinking about trading it on a 2003 XLT or Eddie Bauer. If i get the XLT the options i want are sunroof,DVD,6 disc, reverse sensing, leather and 5.4 engine (premium) In the bauer i want DVD,mainly maybe sunroof. Im trying to keep the price at a certain area. They are offering $7000 off including the $1500 rebate. Which would be the best buy Eddie Bauer or XLT??? I really love the stereo in the Bauer vs the XLT and the fact that the 3 row seat windows open. but the prices on bauers are up their compared to the XLT I can get more options on a XLT around the same price as a basic Bauer. HELP!!

is there a certain power plug for each video game system and where do you get them.
  • jjmd1jjmd1 Member Posts: 14
It has been awhile since I have been on the website.....I have a 1998 XLT with 75,000 miles on it. I bought it used at 33,000. I have not changed the antifreeze yet. Should I change it prior to winter. I live in the northeast and get some snow.
Also, I changed oil recently and used 5W-30 (Mobil synthetic). I got about 2-3 more miles per gallon than with 10W-30 o a highway trip. Is this a coincidence or a true effect of the oil?
  • jrc346jrc346 Member Posts: 337
I think that getting your coolant changed is a very good and often overlooked part of regular preventative maintenance. I get mine changed on all of my cars every year as I live in the Northeast too. I may do it more often than many people but I have never had a cooling issue on any of my vehicles so I think it pays off IMHO. Just my two cents. Have a good one :-)

I understand that they have put that terrible, japanese style tilt-wheel adjuster lever in the new Expedition (like the Explorer). I am really looking at the Expedition instead of a Yukon but I use my tilt wheel every time I enter/exit the vehicle and don't think I would like that lever style. Can anyone confirm or deny this and comment about it's use?
  • jrc346jrc346 Member Posts: 337
Yeah the new Expeditions do have that new horrible tilt steering device. I honestly don't know why they (Ford engineers) would think customers would like that better (maybe some actually do?). What Ford may have done though is loaded a spring inside the column to make adjustment easy. I don't really know though because I haven't driven one. I guess if I was in your position I would drive both a Yukon/Tahoe and Expedition back to back and see how you like them. Maybe with those cool power fold down rear seat that steering adjustment lever can be over looked ;-)
  • mfullmermfullmer Member Posts: 773
And I'm hoping I'll be able to choose easily. Unfortunately the dealers around the ATL area are the most unfriendly bunch and won't even let me drive them (actually refuse) when they hear that the lease on my '02 Bravada isn't up until next May.

My family has been in the dealership business back in California for years and if they treated customers the way the ATL businesses do they'd be out of business.

I guess, once they both are out a little longer (The '03 Tahoe/Yukon has had some pretty substantial interior changes this year) I can rent one from Enterprise and Hertz and drive them each for a few days.

    Thanks,

I have looked at the 03 Expedition and have concerns with the fold up center seat that gives access to the third row seat. When the seat is folded up the "claws" that attach the seat to the floor are exposed. Has anyone had problems ripping pants, jackets etc? I noticed the Explorer has sleeves over their claws on the fold up seats so it is not an issue with that vehicle.
I currently have a 95 Explorer and do want to get the Expedition but first I want anyones thoughts on the fold up seat. At the dealership when I brought it to their attention, the manager tried to climb into the back and got grease all over his pants. Any thoughts???
  • jrc346jrc346 Member Posts: 337
Yeah I agree with you 100 percent on the dealer thing. If Chevrolet and GMC have better dealers that are easier to deal with then by all means get a Yukon/Tahoe. It will make the whole buying/leasing experience much more satisfying. I have had some bad experiences with bad dealers. However our Ford dealer in town here has wizened up thanks to that Blue Oval certification program, but Ford just did away with funding for that so who knows that means? Anyway, sounds like you have a good plan. Good luck with your decision!
  • zman3zman3 Member Posts: 857
We have an 03 Expedition. So far we have had no issues with that but we have only used the 3rd row a few times. I was more worried about catching a foot or toe when putting the seat back down.

Maybe someone else can help more but I know how frustrating it is when no one responds, so there is my $0.02.
