I have a 2003 Crown Vic Police Interceptor with 35000 miles on it. It was a light duty car for the Sheriff and his deputy, and never used for patrol. My problem is that it seems the engine and transmission roar louder than they should on acceleration. I have a 1995 CV and it is quiet and does not roar on acceleration. I know the 1995 car has lot's of insulation whereas the cop car has a vinyl mat and very little sound damping. Everything works correctly and the car runs great..no issues with tranny or motor..except they seem a little loud.
Also, the gas pedal is hard to push..it seems to have a lot of resistance, and gets very tiring on long drives without cruise control. It doesn't seem like it is binding, just hard to push. Can the accelerator cable be adjusted?

i have a 2007 Crown Vic with 33K on it. I am having a problem whereby anytime the roads are wet, the powertrain seems to act out. It will usually happen when snow or ice are on the ground, but this makes no sense to me. First, the car will feel like a skip hits it. Then eventually, a lit wrench appears on the dashboard. The engine lihgt also illuminates and remains on. The cruise control also goes out. If i restart the car, everything is back to normal until the skip happens again.

I had this on my 2006 crown vic, and the dealership didn't know what the problem was because I could never get it there with the wrench lit. Anybody know what i'm talking about or have experiences with it?

2001 Grand Marquies 4.?L engine 32 K miles. The service engine light came on and the overdrive on/off light began to blink. Took it to autozone for a scan and it came up with the output speed sensor insufficient input code P0720. Is this possible it's just a bad sensor or can this be an input problem to the sensor? I can cycle the O/D button on the shifter a few times and the light will stop blinking on and off. Does anyone know where the sensor is located? Is this something I can change while changing the transmission fluid?

Hey just wanted to say that i have a 1991 crown vic and the tranny went out and i believe what your probably expering is either the od band is out or there may be a throttle valve which is a cable that goes from the top of the motor to the tranny and the top piece is mad out of teflon and it has gotton hot and burnt up. if those are not the case check the rear end my went out with the same shuddering and when it went out i was going down the insterstate and the axle and all flew out so be carefull. anyway i have work on tranny for the ford people for 19 years and there just saying they dont know couse they don't want to work or they want to wait for the right time so they can rip you off. just chek those couse after i fixed mine rear end and tranny i have never had trouble. i have owned 3 crown vics and all have had tranny trouble. good luck

Ok I have a 94 grand marquis and the trans just started acting up on me yesterday. It wouldn't shift into park and the gears fear loose when I shift to them. I found a bolt in the driverside floor board and it have no idea what it goes to. Please give me some kind of feedback on this problem.
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
    1. Not shifting into Park may require a minor linkage adjustment.

    2. Not knowing how many miles since you had a fluid change, perhaps that is due. Remember to also drain the torque converter and install a new filter in the transmission.

    3. The bolt found on the floor board may be related to the need for linkage adjustment, but I doubt it. Your Mercury dealer parts manager would know by showing it to him.

    Hey guys,

My 2005 Mercury Gr Marquis LS with 111150 miles sometimes feels like the wheels are going to fall off at any moment. I'm pretty sure I have a warped brake rotor, but would that cause the car to shudder like nervous Nelly while the brakes aren't engaged? Otherwise I have had the alignment inspected (multiple shops say it's fine) and the only items that aren't stock are the tyres, the Michelins have been replaced with Goodyear TripleTreads. I keep the car well serviced - engine and transmission fluids and filters changed, as well as the rear differential fluid... All in accordance with the owners manual. I'm kinda lost here because I'm starting to set off seismometers.
  • dannyodouldannyodoul Member Posts: 3
It sounds like broken bushings or busted ball joints, or maybe the tie rod.
The tie rod, often must be replaced frequently on the MGM.

The other issue with the tires may be the cause - make sure the tires are the same
    size and wideness.

    Best luck.
    Sincerely,
    The Legendary Danny O'Doul

First thing you do is replace the fuel filter located on the frame rail. Get a motorcraft filter for about $16, and have an oil change place put it in for about $40. You will be amazed the difference something so small and forgotten can make. Be sure to have the mechanic show you the condition of the gas and water and sludge-like fluid flowing out of it after it has been removed so you can see how much sludge you may have in your tank. If your fuel filter is very sludged up, you will need to remove your gas tank and replace the filter inside the tank as well as clean out the tank so you get all the sludge and slime. This is something you will want to do to any car that has been sitting un-used for a long period of time, or if you buy your gas at out of the way mom and pop stations who never change their gas tank or pump filters.

A set of Michelins is in your future. Our Town Car has the Michelin X and the T Bird has the Michelin Hydroedge. Both tires carry cars with over 111,150 miles on them & they are smooth and vibration free.

Is the bolt you found a "Torx" or "star" shaped drive? It is possible that the 2 bolts that retain the shifter cable linkage bracket at the back of the steering column have come loose, and one of them fell out. Simply reinstall them with blue loctite thread locker and the correct Torx bit driver and rachet. If the bolts are verified loose, this will cause multiple concerns with the trans linkage and your ability to put the trans in park. Good luck!! (an easy repair, if you have the correct bit and a flashlight) Just follow the shifter cable up the column, be sure to set the vehicles parking brake and be on a flat, level surface. It couldnt hurt to block your tires as well!!

My poor cars rear diff spews silvery grey goo
It's all too evident what I need to do.
I open my wallet to part with my money,
My mechanic smiles and says "Thanks again, sonny!"
But before I do, I come before you,
and hopefully will walk away with a clue.
How much cash will I need in hand
    before I go to mechanicland
for a shiney new differential, and some fresh fluid too
so my car won't spew that silvery grey goo?

(in regards to a 05 Grand Marquis LS)

    fordtransman,

My shifter was loose on my 92 Grand Marquis so today I went under the dash and found the two torx bolts you talked about. They were lose so I tightened them as best I could without the correct torx driver. In looking for the correct size of these bolts I found your post. Do you know the size? My biggest is T20, way too small.

    Thanks

I have a 92' Ford Crown Vic and just recently, I noticed that my car has started tripping! It gets first and second gear fine but it hesitates and sometimes never gets out of second gear. It's an automatic transmission of course, and before I let a mechanic rape me and tell me I need all this unnecessry stuff...I wanted to get some advice on what I should try to do. I was going change the filter and fluid, but I just wanted to get some advice on the matter first.
  • puccaduccpuccaducc Member Posts: 7
I'm trying to see what would sound good as far as a system to put in my 92' Ford Crown Vic. I was just trying to see if there was anyone out there that had my type of vehicle and had a nice sounding system that could give me some ideas as far as what size speakers, what type, and how to set up the system. Hit me up with some suggestions please!
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
The car's mileage? Recommend you change the transmission & torque converter fluid and filter.
  • puccaduccpuccaducc Member Posts: 7
I kinda figured and hoped that was the problem. I bought it from a place and I said that I probably needed to go ahead and change the filter and fluid anyway but you just gave me confirmation as to what I was thinking. I just drove it again a while ago and it was shifting into 4th gear a little hesitantly but it was shifting so that's a good thing I guess. Thanx for the input
  • dannyodouldannyodoul Member Posts: 3
You should first check if the overdrive (if is equipped) is not disengaged.
If working correctly, the overdrive mode will shift first through third gears and then into overdrive.
If, on the steering wheel stalk (on the right side of wheel)
is depressed, then overdrive has been de-activated and a light denoting this (usually in green) should be displayed on the dash, indicating OD/OFF.
It is possible that you are in OD/OFF Mode, and perhaps it is malfunctioning.
    Good luck diagnosing.

    Sincerely, The Legendary Danny O'Doul
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
    You are correct.

In addition the OD transmission automatically reverts to using OD upon a fresh start of the engine.
  • puccaduccpuccaducc Member Posts: 7
It doesn't have an OD button, it just has the standard display and gear shift. I've noticed that at times when I am driving it gets all the first gears smoothly but on the last gear it hesitates to get that one and when it does get it....it is when I'm going at least 45 or 50 mph when it hesitates but then slowly shifts to the last gear. If I accelerate and the speed makes a sudden change it doesn't go back to that gear....it just sounds as if I am in the previous gear. Could that be the shift sensor?
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
The O'D button is at the center end of the directional lever, hard to see from the usual point of view. Try pushing in the end of the gear shift (directional lever) & see what happens. Otherwise, read the Owners Manual as to its location.
  • puccaduccpuccaducc Member Posts: 7
Hey thanks for the info...I read the owner's manual and it states that it is a automatic transmission with built in overdrive. It states that once the vehicle reaches a cruising speed it should shift into fourth gear but that is not happening. So, I was gonna take your advice and go ahead and get the filter, fluids, and torque converter fluid changed but do you think that it would be an issue with a shift sensor?
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
Not knowledgeable regarding the shift sensor, however, after the fluid, filter change, see how it operates.

I've two Ford O/D's each with over 110,000 miles and haven't changed the shift sensors in either, just the oil and filter change in the transmission every 30 to 40 thousand miles.

I was wondering if you could give me any insite on the windows. My motors are functioning, but the windows down let up or down and as a matter of fact they slowly but surely fall. Would that be due to the plastic teeth in the window gear kit being worn or does that have anything to do with the regulator?
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
Re: Plastic teeth on window roll downs, don't know. What I have learned is to avoid slamming the doors. Door slamming seems to shorten the life of those little motors in the bottom that power windows.

My 1996 ford crown vic police interceptor shifts rough. Not really noticeable when cold but when hot you can feel it shift rough up and down.

To all that may know....please answer this question that I am not 100% sure of. I have a 92' Ford Crown Vic. I noticed that my speedometer needle had spuratic movement so I changed the speed sensor. The sensor is electronic and does not use a cable on this model car but after changing the sensor, the speedometer is not working at all. Do I need to have the system reprogrammed and if so, will disconnecting the battery cables reboot the car's system?

Ok, so at first all it was doing was slipping in fourth after 45mph. Then it only had second gear and I decided to start overhauling the drivetrain. I have replaced both control boxes under the dash, changed the fluid and filter, checked the shift linkages and made sure the transmission was fully engaging the gears. After I put it all back together it only had first. Then it had first and second, and then even third for a short period of time. Now it's back to just 2nd and it makes a slight grinding noise in reverse. I am looking at a master overhaul kit, shift kit, and torque converter from b&m. Anyone have any suggestions?? and how do I adjust the kick-down cable??

As i was approaching a sharp left turn, i released the gas and car suddenly accelerated turning close to 4000 rpm. Applied the brake and it would not slow down the car and i went straight thru [ small country road] Quickly put transmission in neutral and engine slowed to normal. Went down the about 2 blocks and turned left into a driveway and this senerio repeated it self. Drove fine after that. Can anyone help me with problem. Thank you in advance, newbie Donavan2

Hello, I am looking to buy a 2000-2005 Crown Vic RCMP car. I have heard that they have a strickt maintenance schedule which includes engine and transmission changes. Is there a preffered KM range where one should have a new engine and/or transmission, or is it basically the lower the KM the better? Are these good reliable cars and is there anything specific that I should looking for on these cars? I have owned a 1993 Caprice RCMP car, and that thing was incredible. I sold it around 400,000 KMS for something a little cheaper on gas and even at those KMS it still ran great. I am hoping that these police cars are as durable and reliable. Thanks for any information and help.
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
Every police car has been treated differently & run in a wide variety of ways. When you choose a low KM car, you might be getting one with an engine with lots of hours on it due to long periods of idling. To choose the best, drive them all, but if you do purchase one, change all the fluids including the pinion housing & replace with Synthetics. If you are good at the Casinos, try your luck in Regina.

I would like the default startup condition to be overdrive off and then change that by pressing the OD button. I would always like the startup to be overdrive off just the opposite of the factory setting. Is there a way to do that?

I hae a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis LS w 168,000 miles. Car usually runs great, avg. 20mpg. Bought car about year and a half ago. Has had occasional light shudder when lightly applying gas between 35/40 mph. Other day did shudder every time a tried to keep steady speed of 55 and higher w light acceleration . Very scary , no shudder with heavy acceleration. Sucks gas when this happens,
  • euphoniumeuphonium Member Posts: 3,425
Change the transmission fluid & replace with Mercon V. Don't use the forcefull system, but drop the pan and replace the filter. The shudder will not be. It worked for me. :)

My 2004 Grand Marquis is uncomfortable because of it's stiff ride. I have been wondering if it is possible to use springs and shocks for a 2002 Grand Marquis since I see that some says the 2002 is softer and that they stiffened it up in 2003 ?
I like the car, but it do have some odd issues I do not care so much for. This stiff ride is one of them, and a tendency to ruin the front brake rotors is the other. I think it was a week or two after I put in some a little more expensive ones from Bosch, had to brake a little hard, and that was it. So, been having shaky brakes for probably 2 years now. The way people drive here I do not see it possible to save the rotors for a long time if it takes this little to ruin them.
  • Mr_ShiftrightMr_Shiftright Member Posts: 64,481
How many miles on the shocks/struts you have in there now? If you have more than about 80,000, then those items are pretty much fatigued.

As for the rotors, you may have to go to a heavier dury rotor, such as used for police, fleet or two situations.

www.rockauto.com has a good selection for your car at reasonable prices.

Can someone help me? I just bought a 2001 crown vic form a friend. I drove it home parked for about 30 min and then went to KFC placed my order and let the brakes go and stepped on the gas and nothing. wouldn't move forward or reverse but will go into park. Put it into neutral and pushed it to a parking spot and tried running the gears. Rnd212dnrp nothing checked the fluid can't tell if low or not. Turned the car off and let it sit for about 30 min and started it back up. Went into gear and moved right away but when the engine heated up just off of cold it did it again something wouldn't move. Please help!!!
