    @driver100‌:

I think the information you received from your Mercedes dealer is correct about delivery.  I had my contact check on my car's status today.  It seems the car is not on a ship yet.  It was transported to the port and is sitting there awaiting assignment to a ship.  He saw two ETA's on arrival at Jacksonville, one for October 1st and another for October 15th.  He thinks the October 15th date is the more accurate one.

I feel late October is probably a fairly accurate date for delivery.  That's what surprised me - the car is built and sitting at the German port.  If I get any further info, I'll let you know.

Monday morning came and I called the dealership around 9 AM. I was directed to the internet sales manager who seemed very nice. He told me that he is in charge of putting deals together but not the one who steps in for final negotiations. I told him that was fine and that I appreciated his frankness. We began discussions and I felt very comfortable because I had kept all of my recent research on the vehicles of choice and what my convertible was worth. I had a pretty firm price that I was willing to pay, but left some room for dealer profit of course. We opened discussions with the internet price, incentives involved, and what I thought my trade was worth. I also mentioned my desire for the dealer to come off the internet price, thought it wasn't bad as it was stated. I noticed that the gentleman with whom I was speaking didn't appear to argue with any of my points. He asked me to take some pictures of my convertible and send them to him. He had mentioned in the beginning that I didn't have to drive 200 miles back to the dealership if I knew exactly what I wanted and if we could reach a comfortable agreement. I agreed to send the pictures, during which time he would talk with the general sales manager about the figures that I had quoted.

My wife just came in and we have to talk. I'll be back.

I think I know what it is. Once you eliminated the Flex, it came to me. Just need you to tell which wheels it has. :)

It's gotta be a F-150, but which level and color. I'm picturing a red or blue crew cab in Platinum, King Ranch or Lariat trim.

I hope it isn't too late in October....we leave for Florida Nov 8th, and I would like to get used to some of the devices, such as the GPS etc.

Originally they told me mid October and I thought they usually give the longest date possible, to avoid unhappy customers.

The good news is the prices are locked in, so I may as well mile this car up and the new one will have fewer miles on it, and it will be under warranty longer.

I like those features you mentioned Mike, like that there are still buttons to work everything. Of course the average Mercedes owner is probably slower to change to the latest technology - wise for them to go slow. The MKZ was a new car and the media screen has finger prints all over it. You would have to clean it continuously to keep it looking presentable.

driver....Lincoln just sent me an invite to drive their MK something. They let me keep their car for a 2 day test drive and give me $100 to boot. Can't see me buying a Lincoln, but I'll take their $100 anytime. Guess I'm going to be driving a Lincoln for a day, too.

That stuff can't make any kind of business sense. Do even 1% of those test drives ever result in a sale? They even paid me $75 to drive a Lexus.

But a two day loaner? I'd hate to be the sucker that bought that "demo" after a bunch of nothing to lose people beat the crap out of it.

No focus on the Escape having the edge for @sterlingdog's ride? I thought the garage issue ruled out the flex-ability on the F-150.
  • sterlingdogsterlingdog Member Posts: 6,984
No more suspense, I'll try to finish now. I sent the convertible pictures and the internet guy and GM seemed impressed. My pictures included front, back, both sides, tires, interior front and back, and odometer reading of 45K. All of my research showed that the '08 convertible was worth between $7K and $8K. They offered the full $8K with a slight push from me. The new vehicle had rebates of $5,500 and they took another $1k off of sticker internet price.

AND THE NEW VEHICLE IS: Ford F150 XLT Supercrew 4 X 2. I never really wanted the 4 X 4. One problem was that I never saw a 4 X 2 with the options and color that I wanted. It is Ruby Red Metallic Clear Coat with Ingot Silver Trim across the bottom. The Ruby Red is not a burgundy and it isn't a fire engine red. It's a true ruby color. Interior is gray. It has power this and power that, Bluetooth, pull down tailgate with steps and pole to assist in climbing up to the bed, backup camera, bumper sensors, Sirus radio, etc. As a gift, in addition to the carpet matts, they gave me a set of cold weather black rubber matts with the F150 emblem on them. On Tuesday, they delivered the truck to my house, explained carefully how all of the features worked, filled it up with gas, did the paperwork, and drove away in my convertible. The experience was easy, pleasant, and I enjoyed not lingering at the dealership for several hours as I used to do. They called this morning to see if I was doing ok and had any questions. All of the dealership staff that I dealt with were pleasant and helpful---no pushing, no pressure, and no manipulation tactics. I did the survey today---all #1s. I never dreamed that I would purchase a truck 200 miles from my home, but it worked out fine.

Why the truck after knowing that I couldn't get it in the garage? I had wanted one for so long and this color combination with all of the options just blew me away. Still, I think that my wife finalized the decision. She put her arm around me when I first saw it and told me to go ahead and get it. She said that I should just park it on the side street and enjoy driving it because it was what I really wanted. I am thrilled beyond words. Could I have gotten a better deal? Maybe and maybe not. The important thing is that I am so happy with my purchase. I LOVE MY TRUCK!

Perhaps Driver or another poster can post a picture of it. I can't do that process.

There it was---staring me right in the face, the most beautiful set of wheels I had seen in quite some time. I was nearly breathless as I moved closer.

I'll go for $1000 on a Ford pickup truck like he had been looking at earlier!
Jackpot. The passion for the 150 in the earlier search made me feel that was the
case because of the passion alluded to in Episode 1 of the story.

Congratulations on your purchase and double congratulations on being so
    happy with your choice. Enjoy.

That was your dream car so that was the right choice. It sounds like you made a great deal....and hassle free too. Delivered to your home, and all done without all that awful paperwork and signatures and manager approval. You did fantastic...have a great time and enjoy the new truck.....I am sure you will.

btw...we went out with people in Florida and I sat in the back of an F-150. I wrote at the time I really loved it......lots of room, comfortable, solid, nice big windows, beautiful interior. It is more than a truck, it is a very comfortable vehicle.

    Not as good as Imids picture but the best I could get...believe it is Vermillion Red;

Just finished backing up my IPhone 6 and uploading all my music, apps, etc.  Trying to become familiar with the new IOS8 operating system, as well.

I got the smaller of the two models which is still huge compared to my IPhone 4S.  Also opted for a bit more memory as I was approaching max usage on the 16 gig phone.  Very smooth operation and much easier accessibility option through the settings.  Still have the iPhone 4S since I owned it.

I compared several new smart phones but decided to stay with Apple.  I was able to get an extended service contract with it as well.

Once I begin using it more frequently, I will be able to figure out some of the new features.  So far, so good.

You nearly have the truck. You just need to put the Ingot Silver panel across the bottom.

Geez, that is an ugly way to do it. What happened to all the things we were just learning to do? I seem to remember there was a far simpler way to do this. Seems like there was a pretty major software change over the last couple of weeks that nobody warned us about.

The Link box is the same as it was when we switched to Vanilla. I like to type the post, highlight the text that will open a link, and use the Link icon to make the text work as a link.

If you don't highlight any text but just paste a URL in the Link box, you'll wind up with something like this:

    edmunds.com/dealer-reviews

Then you can go back and edit between the "angles" if you wish.

You can still paste the URL in the post. It's just a bit uglier and you can't edit and rename the text to something more clear. Like so:

    http://www.edmunds.com/dealer-reviews

If you do it the highlight way, the text becomes the link.

I don't think he was referring to you possibly abusing a demo car, but rather how people normally treat cars or vehicles they do not own. I know that I drive my own car differently than I drive a rental car when I am in California. I tend to accelerate a little faster and take corners a little faster than I normally would do.

When I was in the business, the only time we would provide a customer with a demo vehicle was when the customer was unsure if the car he was thinking of buying was the right car for him. I would walk the customer out onto the lot, help him select a vehicle he would buy if all things considered were positive, fill it with gasoline and give him a set of keys, copy of his driver's license and his insurance card and have him sign a loaner agreement for 24 or 48 hours. Never had a problem doing that and 90% of the time, the customer bought that car.

But we never had any promotions, locally or nationally, whereby we would give any customer a car to drive for 2 days. Lincoln, I imagine, must be pretty hard up if they are doing this nationally, which I assume they are. No question that there will be many cars on lots with hundreds of miles logged on them that will be much harder to sell than a car with 12-30 miles on them.

LOL! After discovering that to modify the garage for this historic home was going to cost $25K, I figured that I could just park the truck on the side street and trade it every year for a new one. ;)

Congrats Richard. I'm especially impressed how you did the entire buy over the phone. That in itself is worth a lot not to have to sit in "the box" for even a minute. And the home delivery, WOW, you must be a silver tongued devil on the phone.

The experience was unique and comfortable. One thing that I liked was using the computer as we talked on the phone. The guys would update the dealer's internal worksheet each time that we agreed on a change. Each worksheet showed all of the figures (trade allowance, rebates, taxes, etc.). We did three of those worksheets before reaching our final agreement. We then discussed "freebies" such as the winter floor matts, bedliner, free oil changes, home delivery, and full tank of gas. Doubt that I will ever use the free oil changes---that's 400 miles roundtrip. The free bedliner is on hold because I'm not sure that I want it. That Ruby Red Metallic Clear Coat is so beautiful that I hate to put a black liner into the bed. Still, I know that it would prevent scratches.

There was another benefit to doing the deal via phone and internet. Sitting in my home office gave me a greater sense of being in control. It's my turf, not theirs. I also remember a remark made by the internet sales guy. He said that I was getting a slight edge on price because I was a distance buyer. While that may have been all BS, I wondered if there was some truth to that. Since Mike was in the business, he may know. I didn't quite understand the advantage there to either party. Still, I was very pleased with the experience.

Congratulations Richard. Your wife is a sweetheart and she's 100% right! get what makes you happy.

LOL! That particular model certainly would have been easier on the wallet. Yep, I'm blessed in the wife department----48 years and counting.

driver....Lincoln just sent me an invite to drive their MK something.

What are you saying oldfarmer? You think I'll abuse the Lincoln? ;)
Maybe not you but everybody and his grandma would be doing donuts in the parking lot with it.

I was also thinking of the liability to the dealer if someone was going crazy and rolled the car or otherwise created mayhem.

When a dealership loans a car to a customer for purposes of "demo-ing" that car, the customer's insurance is the primary insurance on the vehicle once the customer signs the agreement to provide insurance, provides a copy of his insurance card, and a copy of his driver's license. After that, whatever happens to the car is the responsibility of the customer - dents, dings, accidents, etc.
