Hello, first time posting here. I'm looking for a Sequoia and live in Maine. We really want a Limited but we also really want Desert Sand Mica. Those two evidently don't go together. Some dealers say that an SR5 can be "preferenced" to be almost a Limited. Misses the heated seats and fog lights. Anything else I won't get?? How long should it take to get the car if I preference one?? My local dealer says even preferencing I may not get exactly what I want, is this true. Now for all the others to jump in on price. My dealer says $2000 less than MSRP, whatever that is when the car comes in in 4-5 months. I've only bought American cars new in the past and have paid $100 over invoice and ordered them and received them in 8 weeks. Is this price competitive. Unfortunately Edmunds TMV isn't very helpful here. I think if the dealer is making a couple of grand to order it, thats pretty darn good. Any thoughts?? Last question for now, when would I preference to get a 2002 model? I can be patient for a little while longer. Thanks for any help anyone can offer I
I live in the Boston area (but don't hold that against me and the best deal I could get was $2000 under invoice. This was just before Chistmas so the market may have changed a bit, but I would say that you are in the right ballpark. I purchased A Desert Sand Mica SR5 4X4 and I love the color. I was pretty surprised that this color wasn't available on the Limited as it is similiar to a 'champagne' color offered on a lot of up scale models. On the SR5 this is one of the few colors that the fender flares coordinate nicely with the body color. There is a difference, but not striking. I think I like this combination better than an exact match anyway. Best of luck in your search, you won't regret your purchase.
While the Sequoia can be driven in 4WD all the time, I prefer to switch to 2WD when I am sure that I won't need 4WD. The truck seems to accelerate a little quicker in 2WD and gets slightly better gas mileage. On the highway you probably won't notice any difference in feel, but around town (frequent stops and starts) 2WD just feels smoother to me. Hope this deal works out for you, sounds like a great way to buy. A nice road trip immediately after picking your new truck up - nice.
Has anyone broght their Sequoia out in the sand? I just got my beach permit, but I'm a little hesitant to get out there. My old 83 Montero Sport was fun on the beach, but was much smaller. I have confidence in the Sequoia's 4WD system and the ground clearance is great, but this thing is BIG.
We are ready to buy our first SUV and would like it to be the Sequoia. Is it my imagination or is supply picking up out there? Any knowledge of dealers in the Houston area willing to sell an SR5 at $2000 over invoice?
I have special ordered and have been driving a Sequoia SR5 with most options including side airbags. I live in San Antonio Texas and ordered from Dianne in California. Seh was wonderful to do buisness with and gave me a better price than local dealers. Gulf states also adds on a bunch of unwanted items to raise the price (profit). All of my interaction was through the internet and Fedex. I waited around 8 weeks. The average has been six to eight. I am very pleased with my purchase. No abnormal sounds etc.
Yes you can get the vehicle exactly as you want it, (if allowed by toyota) but you may have to go out of state to do it. Don't settle when it comes to such a pricey vehicle. My SR5 has many of the same items the Limited has including leather, alloy wheel pkg, rear air, conv pkg. No moonroof was ordered because I never use the one in my other car so I saved a grand. You dont get the option of foglights, heated seats, rear wind deflector, fold down mirrors, or hammer tone trim. But that being said, there are Sequoia owners that have had foglights, heated seats and rear air deflectors put on there SR5's after the fact. (normally aftermarket) Some have even had leather put in after delivery.
As far as pricing goes, I believe offers for greater than $1000 off MSRP are reasonable. Those that are getting them for close to invoice are hard to believe and good for them if it's true.
I preferenced/ordered a Limited 2wd Sequoia over three weeks ago from Mike Calvert Toyota in Houston for $2050 off of MSRP. About a week ago my sales person calls and says they have been unable to find an exact match, but that one will be available if I also agree to buy the side air bag option (this ploy sounds very similar to what cliffy1 mentioned about 20 posts ago). I was almost going to get the curtain & side air bags anyway, so I didn't really mind the switcheroo. Just wish I didn't have to wait another 3 weeks for delivery.
The majority of Sequoias in this area are finished out by Gulf States Toyota to include pin stripping, VIN etching, glass breakage sensor (I think I can tell if my glass is broken, thank you), Toyo-Guard, wheel locks, cargo net, etc, etc. These add-ons add up quickly, so unless you really want them, you'll have to special order.
I haven't been thru the whole purchase process yet for my new Sequoia, so it's hard to completely rate my dealer, but they have been much more willing to budge on price than all the other Houston dealers I worked with. I'll definitely keep you posted if my salesperson doesn't follow through on the deal.
I am dealing with the sales manager in a dealer here in Minnesota and I have been able to order a White SR5 for near invoice. He has been absolutley great. I have given the name to several other people who live out of the state and I KNOW one have them has ordered a SR5 with their specific options for about $500 over invoice. I will be happy to give you his contact information if you want to email me at wstill1071@aol.com

zinny White SR5 with CC, AH, CQ, AC, GY, DR, and RL....$33,930.
Actually, I told you 6 to 8 weeks but I get the point. You need it now and I can't get it that soon. Good luck. If things don't work out, you know where to find me.
Now, in answer to your question of why Toyota orders like it does, allow me to explain. Each region has its own distributorship. The distributor asks its dealers what they want. They take this input and order from Toyota. We are given a pool of vehicles each month. If we want a vehicle that is not already ordered, we can get it. It just takes some patience. If you've got it, I (or any other dealership who cares to try) can usually get it.
Pricing will vary by region. I just posted "normal" prices for this area. Demand is very high for the Limited and we don't get enough of them so prices are very high. The SR5 is selling pretty well and profit levels are still on the high side, but not as bad as the Limited.
I used www.carsdirect.com and ordered a white/charcoal Limited with moon roof, C7 and G4 options. They called back and said it will be built early April and cost will be $42,237 and I will have to drive 20 miles to the dealer when it arrives. Everybody else in NJ, Pa and NY wanted MSRP or close to it and there was no guarantee I could get exactly the color and options I wanted because, according to several dealers, they cannot order a vehicle with specific options and color.
They did give me the last 8 digits of the vin number, so I guess that means something.
I see you live in Maine...lots of snow? If you garage your new Sequoia and it is a standard garage, you will need to fold in your mirrors to get in your garage. It was a deciding factor for me to go with the LTD...I did not want to have to get out of the car to fold in both mirrors every time I pulled in the garage. With the Limited you simply push a button and the mirrors fold in. They could take away the heated seats, fog lights etc, but if the mirrors did not automatically fold in, I would end up hating the car! Also, buyer beware...listen for the ticking sound...Mine is a "ticker" Before you buy, check out www.tundrasolutions.com I wish I had...I really love my Sequoia, but the ticking is like the Edgar Allen Poe, Telltale Heart...it might drive me insane...Good Luck!
It was me who wrote the original post. I had a couple of 4x8x1/4" plywood sheets, propped up above my headrest. In the case of a sudden stop, the angle of the sheets from bottom of the closed hatch to the top of the headrest wouldn't have hit my head. I didn't try moving the seat all the way up to see if the sheets would lay flatter. I also fit a 2x8x10' board with the hatch closed, and it tucked in under the sun visor.
Cliffy's explanation of the ordering process is accurate. We get a three-month advance printout of the build schematics for all cars in all colors. Anything out of the ordinary, I just build it. I have discovered that for most of us, anything worth having IS worth the wait.
Just purchased a sunfire red SR5 4WD with front/rear AC, leather seats, sunroof,Alloy Wheel, convenience pkg, roof rack, and cargo net for $3,450.00 off the MSRP and $1,780.00 above invoice. I have never paid so much over invoice, but considering some of the posts I've read on here, I think I did OK.
Purchased from dealer in northern VA, after haggling with Carmax in MD. Great customer service and very smooth transaction. I was considering the Expedition and Explorer because of family member A plan discount on top of deep discounts on price and APR.
However, my recent experience with a 96 Ford Windstar left a bitter taste in my mouth. The Windstar had a great ride, but at 60,000 miles the transmission was starting to act up. I was going to fix it, but from what I read on a number of websites, there was more trouble down the road like head gaskets, brakes etc.,.
After much thought I decided to sell the Windstar to CarMax (they gave me a great price). I took the equity and put it down on the Sequoia to help lower my note. I am willing to pay a little more for peace of mind and quality. Even after a few hours, I feel great about this vehicle. I highly recommend it.
ready to buy, hard to find in Chicago... SEQ SR5 2WD Silver Sky, need AC, AH, CC, CF, DR, WL, SR interested dealers please advise and thank you cliffy, for the time and info!
Just test drove a Sequoia today and was very impressed. I had been considering the 2002 Explorer and the 2001 Durango. Can anyone give me their opinion about the safety of the Sequoia. I have read everything I can get my hands on about the safety features of all the SUV's I am considering. As the Sequoia has not been tested, I am in the dark with this vehicle. But it certainly "seemed" safe when I drove it. I am wondering if Sequoia owners have an opinion re: rollover tendencies. Do you think it is more stable than the Explorer and Expedition (2 star rollover tests)? The Durango got a 3 star rollover but the middle seat does not lock and I do not feel safe putting my children in a seat that the back does not lock in place. Can anybody give me their impression of the stableness of the Sequoia. THANKS!!!
Wondering if I can add the Toyota hitch post-purchase if I decide I need it. I really like its look as compared to the really ugly aftermarket hitches I've seen, but not sure if I will use it in the near term.
Are there other items included with the hitch package when buying new (I know Ford adds a tranny cooler and extra cooling, along with a heavier duty battery and wiring harness with the Expy I'm looking at)? Do you get a wiring harness with the hitch or as part of the alloy wheel package option?
Heck, does Toyota even sell the hitch as an add-on?
I am dealing with the sales manager in a dealer here in Minnesota and I have been able to order a White SR5 for near invoice. He has been absolutley great. It may be worth a try as Chicago is not all that far from here. I will be happy to give you his contact information if you want to email me at wstill1071@aol.com

zinny White SR5 with CC, AH, CQ, AC, GY, DR, and RL....$33,930.
I purchased a new gunfire Red Sequoia two weeks ago and just love the car. My question - the dealer says to use Premium gasoline. The owners manual says to use anything from 87 Octane to 91. What is everyone using in the car and if anyone is using 87 Octane, have you experienced any problems. Would like some feedback, please SAP. Thanks.
I just purchased a Silver Seq with: DR, GY, RL, SR, CC, AH, CQ, and AC for $35,459 plus $25 document fee, taxes & tags. That's it, no other hidden charges.
$555 over invoice, $4151 under MSRP. Can't beat it even considering I have to fly up to MN, and put on 1200 miles to drive it back to VA. Got what I want now not having to wait 8 weeks either. Picking it up tomorrow morning.
The best deal I got in VA area was $36,158 with no SR, and no GY (what I really want).
Thanks to zinny2 for that reference. Send me email if you want the name of the dealer.
BTW: He even offers to pick me up at the airport, or pay the cab fares if I took taxi. What a guy! The most pleasant car buying experience ever for me. Will keep you all posted of my trip.
I've got 1200 miles on mine and only use 87 octane...runs like a charm. There's a thread on this topic on tundrasolutions.com if you're interested. Some say your gas mileage will be better using the higher octane, but if it costs more to fill it up I don't see any advantage in gaining a few extra miles/tank. I guess there may be mechanical reasons to use higher octane, but wouldn't Toyota recommend it if it were necessary or better for the engine?
I'm sure someone will answer you before I will be able to get back to you, but I will check my brochure when I get home tonight and let you know. I don't recall what Toyota calls the trim color, but based on the sample in the brochure it seemed pretty neutral and non-offensive.
I just bought an SR5 for 1150 over invoice. I love it and am very happy. I actually found a dealer in Seattle who would sell me one for 600 over but that is a 6 hr. drive for me. I am having a clicking sound in the steering column when I first put it into drive. It kind of sounds like my keys hitting the column, but I have eliminated that possibility. Is anyone out there having this type of sound. The Jade w/gray trim and the blue with gray trim are by far the nicest looking ones out there in my mind.
I received a very interesting phone call yesterday. It was from a person with Toyota in the Denver region. He was one of two people involved in the tloughr arbitration situation. I am going to pass on some information, but I am also going to respect tloughr's privacy in this matter, meaning, I'm not going to get into the resolution.
Tloughr had a Sequoia with the injector noise and it bothered him a lot. He is a real fan of Toyota quality and the Toyota people worked with him to reach a mutually agreeable resolution. The people from Toyota even came to the negotiations with printed pages from this forum as well as from Sequoiasolutions.com. They had read it and continue to read these sources.
At no point in the discussions did the Toyota people request the customer to rescind his statements on the bulletin boards. There was no formal, nor informal gag order involved. They didn't even ask him to remove the names or phone numbers. Tloughr did this voluntarily.
He is a satisfied Toyota customer and it seems he didn't want to stir things up any more than he already had. He also chose not to disclose the terms of the arbitration and I will respect his decision on that score. The bottom line is, there was no conspiracy, gag order and secrecy involved with this.
As I said, this was a very interesting phone call. I for one, am happy Toyota is listening to what is said here. I'm also happy Toyota was able to satisfy tougher in all of this.
got the white car right there -- and right here! As you can see, the lower portion of the trim is somewhat a chameloen.. looks silver and looks pale gold as well.
Anyone see this before? Local dealer claims his invoice cost is usual invoice plus destination plus 2.5% of invoice for a 'Toyota Dealer Association' fee. About an $800 fee on a Sequoia, is this real?
Man, have we covered this at length. Depending on the dealership's location and region, it's possible it is that high. Here in my regional area, regardless of the higher base cost of the car, the MAX we pay is $300 a car for TDA. I suspect that's why so many folks can afford to ship their perfect cars from me (order builds or regular incomings) and still save a bundle. In SoCal, the percentage that's charged to the dealer is 1.25% of the base cost, but it's Capped at $300 max. Man, if you are in a pricy TDA region with no CAP on the TDA, look out! That dealer might pay as much as $600-$700 *more* for the same Landcruiser or Sequoia as I do. I do not know if there are areas across the country that are cheaper than we are, but I doubt it.
Anyone see this before? Local dealer claims his invoice cost is usual invoice plus destination plus 2.5% of invoice for a 'Toyota Dealer Association' fee. About an $800 fee on a Sequoia, is this real?
They are very real and not reimbursed to the dealer. The lowest I have seen is in the midwest where they are capped at $250. Southern CA is capped at $300. Northern CA is about 2.5% and no cap. Here in the Central Atlantic Region, we are at 2.1% with no cap.
Where I live in CT you can't touch a Sequoia below MSRP. They are not willing to negotiate. So I searched the net and found a dealer willing to work with me.
Here's my deal.
Silver Sky 4WD - $36,350 purchase price
Includes Leather, Dual AC, Alloy Wheels, Privacy Glass, Running Boards, Tow Hitch, Roof Rack, Convenience Package (Keyless entry, etc)
Compared to local dealers, I am saving $4,120 on the low side and $5,712 on the high side. I am happy with my deal and refuse to ever buy/lease a car from a local dealer unless they are willing to negotiate.
BTW, the dealership, who is 330 miles away, delivers the car to my door for $90. Saves me 12 hours of driving. The Sequoia arrives Wednesday.
Who are you buying from on the Net? Dealers in CT and Northern NJ where I'm from assume people in this area have the money and don't mind paying MSRP - people do pay it and are ruining it for the rest of us !!!
You are absolutely correct. The dealers do assume people in this area have the money. And maybe they do. In fact, I could probably come up with the money if I had to, but I don't want to. Like anything else, I will pay only what I feel is a fair price. There are reasonable dealers outside my area willing to work with me. I'd rather give them the business.
The dealers are so arrogant in my hometown that my local Toyota and Honda dealerships both have unsatisfactory ratings by the Better Business Bureau. And no, I did not write to the BBB about them.
I will gladly tell you the dealership I got this from after my Sequoia is delivered. Fair enough? Look in this forum on Wedneday evening. BTW, I forgot to mention it was an SR5.
Just curious....like to get feedback from different regions. SR5 Sequoia with Convenience Package, Captains Chairs, Michelin Tires and Alloy Wheels, Running Boards, Roof Rack, Leather Seats (not factory), Privacy Glass, Carpet Mats and Trunk Mat, and Daytime Running Lights at $33,967. How would that compare in your region? Thanks.
I just purchased a new Sequoia SR5 and had planned to install a CB radio in it. It's handy on trips to hear about traffic problems and what's happening down the road when traffic stops or slows or in case of an emergency. In reading the Sequoia Owner's Manual, it cautioned against installing a CB because of interference with parts of the electrical system. Does anyone know anything about this? I really want the CB but don't want to be stranded because of it.
Here in Minnesota I think you can very easily get an SR5 for about $500 over invoice.
I got an White SR5 4X4 with: AC Dual ac AH Alloy package CQ Convenience pkg CC Electric seats GY Side airbags DR Roof rack RL Running lights CF Floor mats All this for $33,930....$279 under invoice. I found a pretty good sales manager in MInneapolis. If you have any more questions you can email me @ wstill1071@aol.com
Is it just me wondering why for the umpteenth time, zinny has advertised his "deal" on this board which he/she has yet to purchase. If zinny is NOT a dealer, and is NOT paid to provide the amount of free publicity to this dealership, then he must be the most kind-hearted buyer (potential buyer) out there doing such a great job for this dealer on this forum. This forum has enough bad rep about too many dealer involvement, but this is getting way too much. Zinny, rest it, will ya ? just buy the darn vehicle for invoice or whatever and get it over with.... Maybe then this will go away...or will it ??
In case this has been covered before & I didn't see it - please forgive my sins for lack of searching. (Maybe my glasses are as thick as the barber's were, who thought the 40th anniv. LC was bigger than the regular one, when equipped with Dianne's Republican Bushguards, or possibly he viewed the regular edition in the passenger side rear view mirror and failed to see the "objects in mirror are closer than they appear" disclaimer.) Also glad to see you two have somehow managed to extricate yourselves from the mud wrestling abyss over "2% over offers" and "tow capabilies"! I thought you both were going to have to chew your own foot off at the ankle to escape that trap.
Anyway, here's my question. As an owner of a 91 4wd Truck, 95 4wd 4Runner, 96 LC, and 2000 4wd Tundra Ltd. (love all 4) there is big difference in the 4wd systems. I dislike the "bind up/wrap up" of the 4Runner and Tundra's system on slow speed manuvering when 4wd is engaged. The LC system being full time is totally seamless (in 4wd Hi) and much preferred. Is the Sequoia identical to the Tundra where you get the wrap up bunny hops in tight turns when engaged or is it smooth like the LC? I obviously haven't taken the test drive yet. Thanks
Dianne and/or Cliff - I seem to recall that one of you (I thought it was Dianne) made a comment either here or on the THC board about a bigger engine coming (soon?) for the Sequoia to, among other things, allow it to compete better against the American counterparts. Any news on the availability of a larger engine and when it might become available. (Sorry in advance if it wasn't one of you who made the comment.)
I would also like to know if a bigger (uprated) engine is planned for the near future. Although having seen a beautiful red (with grey flares) Sequoia blow by me up the San Luis Obisbo grade yesterday I wonder if they need it! I was impressed.
The 4WD system on the Sequoia is identical to the Land Cruiser except that you can have it in 2WD. I have written an exhaustive discourse on this topic several times but the format here at Edmunds makes it difficult to find. If you go over to www.tundrasolutions.com and click on "forums", then to "Sequoia Tech" and then to the topic of "How the 4WD system works in the Sequoia, Land Cruiser and 4Runner works" you will find all the information you need on this.
I have heard from my district manager that a larger V8 will be coming out sometime in the next "few years" but I have no information on how soon or how much more powerful.
Perhaps it seems that way just to you. Most of Zinny's posts have been in response to some question about pricing. Granted he does mention the dealer in every one but if indeed he is getting this deal - it could be inspiration to us all. Except maybe you because you already bought your Sequoia.
zinny - please continue to let us know how the deal goes.

Thanks
