"Also, is replacing windshields in general nowadays a pretty simple process? I don't want to have to worry about water or air leaks (I can't imagine driving around with a whistling noise all the time)."

Had to replace the windshield on my Mustang a few years ago due to a rock chip - guy drove to our house, did it in our driveway, and only charged us $175. No problems with leaks of any sort. I do imagine that a Pathy windshield will cost more, but it's a pretty routine procedure.

    Duper,

Nice looking rig. I will print it out to show my wife, she may let me get one for Christmas. Did it help or hurt the approach angle? Did you put in a second battery for the winch? What winch/pull rating did you get?

    Thanks,

    Duper,

I really like the integrated look of your setup.

But your picture would look much better if mud were slung all over the place. HA! HA!
  • captainroncaptainron Member Posts: 58
Yeah...that's the ARB set up, but that pic is straight from the ARB website. They have a lot of examples of their bumpers mounted on rigs like this Australian Pathfinder. Notice the right-hand drive?

As far as winch size, you should take the GVWR )Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) and multiply it by 1.5. I don't recall the GVWR on our Pathfinders, but it should be around 5,500# (4,299lbs+passengers and gear). Multiply that by 1.5 and you're looking at 8,250lbs recommended. Since that's between two winch ratings, I'd go for the 9,000lb pull rating winch for the margin of safety. A 5,000 vehicle that's sucked down in the mud is a BEAST to get out!

Anyway, I'm off to San Gabriel OHV (Southern California off-road area) for the day (With mud!).

Uh, that picture was copyrighted. Perhaps the list owner had better remove it? I'm not ARB (obviously), but they might cause trouble if they found out it's on this list without permision (though I would think they'd like the free advertising - did you get permision duper?).
BTW, I was quoted $2050 Can. (approx. $1300 USD) by 4Wheel Wholesale Parts here in Edmonton (Alberta Canada). I'm sure there's lots of shipping in there, but still...
  • duperduper Member Posts: 127
    Sorry guys,

Yes it was from ARB website. I didn't know that prior to post it. I found it and link it from 4x4parts BB. I thought it may give a better idea of how the ARB looks like on a 2001. I'll delete it.

I have owned my LE for 6 months now and have discovered there is no light in the glove box! Is this feature purposely omitted for some reason? Do other SUV's at the LE trim level also have no light? Just wondering. All the other cars and trucks I have owned over the years all have had a light that came on when the glove box was opened. I found it handy.

Sorry took so long to get back with you. I have a center console fishing boat.

    My baby: http://www.keywestboatsinc.com/boats/196bayreef.html

I included the weight of the trailer, fuel, etc to determine the weight of the boat. Better to over estimate than under.

I have spoken with several mechanics and my dealer regarding towing in OD. Here is the reason not to under any circumstances.

Automatic transmissions use planetary gears for 1st, 2nd, and OD. Drive does not involve planetary gears and is a direct drive through the transmission. Not directly to the wheels as the final drive does reduction. Using planetary gears generates high heat in the transmission, a critical factor in the transmissions health. That is the reason for NOT using OD for extended highway towing. Does not matter when pulling up or down the ramp unless you plan on hitting 40 mph in the process. I have put over a 2000 miles towing to FL and back to GA with overdrive off doing 70 mph with the engine turning 3400 rpms. This is a good set up the engine is loafing and the transmission is cool. I use Castrol Syntec in the Pathy and I know it is well lubricated.

Even if the engine is not working hard towing in OD, your transmission is taking a beating, trans cooler or not. Even if you purchase a Ford pickup with a 460 V8, the manual will state not to tow in OD. You need to be concerned about avoiding trans failure (usually someplace inconvenient) and voiding your warranty.

Enough of the scary stuff. buying a boat is truly a blast. I spent over a year reading on-line articles and going to boat shows before I made my choice. First consider the boats purpose. Choose boats that fit your need. All boats are not equal, as many boating forums are full of horror stories of choosing a poor quality boat from a company with a poorer reputation. Stick with a company with a proven track record. Take your time shopping before you hand over the $$, as you know by now, they don't give them away.

I did add Airlifts to my Pathy to raise the rear end from the tongue weight of the trailer. These things work great as I would bottom out coming out of my driveway and other places. They cost me $70 and installed them myself in 5 hours.

    http://www.airliftcompany.com/al1000.htm

Email my if you have any questions. I know some good boating forums with boaters sharing their experiences.

    Good Luck

I would like to replace the existing head lights with ones that are brighter, I was thinking of PIAA lights, any ideas? Thanks
  • pondfull5pondfull5 Member Posts: 53
The PIAA XTREME WHITE BULB (H.I.D) H-208 or H4 are the best and brightest . I am very happy with them.

I bought them at an audio show in LI this past summer, so the were only about $45.00.

I installed the PIAA SUPER PLASMA (H-76) and was constantly using the high beam on those dark highways to Canada,Ottawa from NYC.
    Good lock.

    Hello,
I'm looking to replace the stock toyo tires with a new set of winter tires that are good for driving in wet/icy conditions. I would appreciate any recommendations.

Also, has anyone heard any news about replacing the PF's lighting systems with the one found in the QX4?

    Thanks!
  • bberisford1bberisford1 Member Posts: 18
    Need your opinions.

Dealer offers $30,500 for '01 LE demo (4K miles),
no Nav, no Entertainment. $34.5K sticker

    I say $28K.

    Whaddya' think?
  • colinj1colinj1 Member Posts: 13
I had a brief look at the lighting system. I think that the QX4's front bumpper is completely different physically in size. I don't think that the two lighting assemblies are compatable.
  • xplorx4xplorx4 Member Posts: 621
The Pathfinder doesn't have this feature, unfortunately. It's one of the few things that differentiates the QX4 with the Pathfinder.

Pretty lame, huh? Well, you can easily install one yourself, like I did to mine. See this link for info about how I did it. Cost me all of about 5 bucks.

I have a 2001 SE, and I do have light in the glove box, but the headlight has to be turned on.
  • goblue96goblue96 Member Posts: 33
I replaced my headlights with PIAA SuperWhite's and they work very well, I'm not familiar the Xtreme White's though (are they new?). I agree with pondfull5 on the SuperPlasma's, stay away from them. That blue coating really dims the light output.
  • dcavicdcavic Member Posts: 9
Tailwind, your right, I just checked my 01 LE and it has a light in the glove box, only works when the headlights are on............

How about instead a quick run to Canada and get a brand new 2002 LE AWD with leather for about 500 bucks less ($27,500)! Or maybe a 2001 for about $26,000. But then again that's what I'm always saying to do. As usual, I'm willing to show anyone how to do this like I did. See my other posts and just email me.

NO way should a 2001 LE demo with 4,000 miles cost you $30,500. By way of comparison, I have negotiated a price of $30,200 from two separate dealers for the same vehicle with an MSRP of $34,900. Brand new 2001 LE with no miles. Your dealer is smoking pot.

    Hi,

I would suggest that you take a look at www.tirerack.com for best fit. I did it, and came to the conclusion that 2 tires are best suited for the Canadian winter. Bridgestone Winter Dueler DMZ-02 or the Michelin LTX A/T. The first is an ice tire with excellent snow and slush performance (ice is where they perform best). The latter is an All Terrain tire, with excellent traction in snow (deep snow), slush, mud and dry pavement (highway) - but so-so on ice (has to do with the rubber used - too hard for ice...). The blizzak (DMZ-02) has a soft rubber that should be good for 2 winter as long as you put them late (November/December) and retire them early (mars/April), but that's the price to pay for maximum ice performance.

Personnaly I ordered the Blizzak, with minimal momentum and some smart driving, anyone with a PF should do ok in snow (this thing is a beast!!!) but ice is trickier, it doesn't matter how many wheels you have, when the traction is gone, well get ready for an unpleasant ride (hope to end up at best in a soft snowbank).

    my 2 cents

Been reading the boards here, so apologies if this is a repeat of old questions for those of you who have been on the Pathfinder board. I own an early 99 SE, and want to upgrade to a 2002 LE with most of the bells and whistles (except navigation and the entertainment center stuff). I've been talking with some dealers and using the services of buying clubs on line -- are there any particular dealers that anyone has had luck with? Meaning no second sticker, no extended warranty work-over in the finance office, no promised vehicles that disappear. I am hoping that there is a favorable customer rebate or financing on the 2002's but no such luck so far. Would like to see best price paid or similar data for the northwest, and haven't found it yet -- was there a What did you Pay? board in the past? Any help much appreciated. I did drive the 02 LE and was beyond impressed at the extra horsepower difference (I am sure this is old news to those of you with the bigger engine). Anyhow, thanks.

I've got a new outside temp sensor (27710-31U00) but having a problem mounting it on the 6mm stud. How did you do it? There are two stock sensors that share the same wiring harness and there's not enough slack to mount one of them with the new bracket on the 6mm stud. By the way, which of the two stock sensors is actually the outside temp gauge (the top one or the lower one)? Any help would be appreciated.
  • pondfull5pondfull5 Member Posts: 53
Yes, the XTREME PIAA WHITE are new. And if you don't already have a driving Lights, you can replace your existing Fog Lights with the XTREME H3. I intend to do just that.

My driving Lights are connected to the high & dim Lights only. They don't work when the heard Lights are on.
    Good Luck.

    bigdot,
Have you seen the posts here about buying in Canada?? You can take an hours trip up to Vancouver and have a 2002 LE AWD with leather in your hands for $27,500!! That's $4000 under US dealer invoice. $7000 under sticker. Just a little paperwork at the border. I did it and 60 others have done it since. Write me and I'll send you all the info. I'm glad to help out anyone. Don't throw away your money.

Does anyone have an "installed" photo of the new improved bracket for the outside temp sensor? Or is the sensor itself completely different, but mounts in the same location?

Has anyone noticed an improvement in accuracy with the bracket (especially on warm or hot days)?

    Hey guys and gals,

The warning lamp for check engine came on this morning. I've driven 6200km or approx 3750 miles.

Is there a schedule that this warning light comes on? I dont want to take it in to service if they're just going to check fluid levels. If this lamp is on a schedule, how do I turn it off?

    Anyone else have this happen?

BigDot, at least consider purchasing in Canada. Good experience in Southern Vancouver. Others in WA and CA will attest to that. Jon is the info man.

Having fun with the Pathy, Gladiator

I have good news I think.

I checked all I could think of in and around the engine. Remembered that I just filled up with gas last night. Usually fillup at Costco or Shell always selecting 91 octane or better. Yesterday I was on E and knew I wouldn't have time to fill it in a.m., so I used Citco gas. Thought I might have a tank of bad gas. For kicks, I checked the manual on schedule and warning lights.

Among other things it indicated that maybe gas cap was loose or off. What the ----. Sure it enough, the cap was still attached to the clip on the door. With a chuckle I replaced it on filler tube. I will let you all know for sure tomorrow.

4 months with my pathy and still feelin spoiled.
  • sanandtonsanandton Member Posts: 342
Many have made the same mistake. It may take up to 3 tanks to go off I believe. Mine took one full tank to reset.

Lofquist, What's the difference between the US and Canadian version LE? Besides the speedo. Is AWD a QX4 option for US models, but standard on the Canadian LE?

    Thanks!!
  • lspanglerlspangler Member Posts: 102
Do you guys know a website to check black book values? Wholesale?
  • lofquistlofquist Member Posts: 281
For differences, basically the Pathfinder in Canada always comes better equipped as standard than the equivalent US model. For example, the LE comes standard with AWD and leather seats. Colors are the same too, but for some reason red is not available.

One big difference is on the Canadian SE. SE's with auto trans come with AWD standard just like the LE. You can't even get an SE in the US with AWD - you get the 4x4 stick version instead.

Just for completeness here's a list of all the differences that I know about:
    - All are 4WD - no 2WD available.
    - The All-Mode auto 4WD system comes standard on all automatic trans models (not avail on the SE in the US).
    - Limited slip differential standard.
    - Floor mats standard.
    - Block heater standard.
    - Cargo net standard.
    - Daytime running lights standard.
    - Power antenna rather than fixed mast.
    - Slightly nicer roofrack mounts (better security).
    - Windshield washer fluid low warning light on dash.
    - Speedometer in km and miles, odometer in km (can be changed).
    - For SE model, sunroof and prem pkgs are standard; leather and auto trans are only options.
    - For LE model, leather is standard; no options available.

I think the last time I did a more complete post with more info was at #2610 way above. But with the better exchange rate prices are even lower now. Just write and I'll help out with questions or maybe even some good dealers if you want.

I have a 2001 LE and got a Drawtite hitch (75077) installed. It bangs violently against the muffler. Called Drawtite, they said I have an old model. The new model has an exhaust cutout. Havent seen it yet, but has anyone else tried the new hitch model or have a clearance problem? I think the '01 pathfinder has the muffler in a different place. It points straight back, rather than to the side. Is hidden-hitch any better?
  • fordnightmarefordnightmare Member Posts: 40
    Jon,

Thanks for details. Do you know any dealers on the Canadian side near Michigan? I would be coming from Chicago.

No rush, I cannot purchase for another 3 months. Besides, I'm still deciding between the PF, 4-Runner or Chevy TB. TB is just about crossed off. Can't beat the Canadian PF price though. Have you ever driven your PF (short trips) with the rear hatch open while carrying long objects? I'm worried about the hatch glass bouncing against whatever I'm carrying and cracking. That's one feature I like about the 4-Runner. The glass drops into the door.
  • the_gladiatorthe_gladiator Member Posts: 58
All is fine. The warning light was on during my drive to work. However, it stayed off when I drove home. So rather than a few tankfuls it stayed on for only the next drive.
  • sivi1sivi1 Member Posts: 82
I am trading my lazy 4runner for a pathfinder Le because of arrogance and high price of toyota dealers. when they say the pathfinder needs premium fuel does it mean 89 or 92 octane
  • brian60brian60 Member Posts: 76
I've actually driven with the glass hatch open many times while transporting a surfboard at speeds up to 75mph. The glass hatch would sometimes flutter due to the tremendous turbulence at those speeds, but it never came close to contacting the surfboard. Probably isn't great for the longevity of the hatch struts, but I haven't had any problems so far.
  • lspanglerlspangler Member Posts: 102
I have the hidden hitch, I think, I can't remember for sure, I'll have to check, but my muffler was an inch or more away from the hitch and no noise so far.
  • dieselonedieselone Member Posts: 5,729
    djmgmail,

I have the same problem as you do. An 01 Path LE with a drawtite hitch and the muffler bangs on the the hitch. I engineered a wedge to place between the muffler and the hitch and it has worked thus far (3mos). I should probably go back to the place I had the hitch installed at, but just haven't gotten around to it.

I just completed a test drive of a 2002 Nissan Pathfinder. I really like the vehicle except I could hear a tremendous amount of exterior noise (i.e., passing vehicles)as compared to my current two vehicles (98 Mazda B3000 pickup and 99 C230 Mercedes). I drove this vehicle on a rainy day and the sloshing of the rain against the under carriage was very loud in the rear section of this vehicle. Is this a usual characteristic of this vehicle or should I test drive another one? Dealer is offering an excellent price (well below invoice) and a very fair trade-in for my pickup.
  • woodyr1woodyr1 Member Posts: 142
I installed a Hidden Hitch on my '01 Pathfinder about 6 months ago, and nothing hits or rubs against any part of the vehicle or muffler.
  • lofquistlofquist Member Posts: 281
Toronto prices, selection, and service seem to be much better than closer to the border. Bigger dealers and more competition. I don't know of any US people who've bought near Detroit, but I know of a couple dozen who've bought in Toronto area. It's only an extra hour or two. And lots of people fly in on cheapy tickets anyway. Email me and I can give you info and contacts that have worked out well - I don't like to post things here that might look like "advertising".

I echo comments on back glass. I've made lots of trips with lumber or such sticking out the back. No problems. Actually really slick.

Hello all, the hitch for the 00' pathfinder is designed differently than the 01' due to the design change of the exhaust system. If a 00' hitch is placed on a 01', the exhaust will bang against the hitch over any bumps. Trust me, I found it very noisy for the first week I had the hitch installed, I used a small bungy cord ($2.00) to wrap from the muffler support to the bracket holding the inside of the rear bumper. This seemes to work fine (leaves about a 2" space between the hitch and the bumper now). I could have gone back and returned the hitch but was less expensive than the dealer supplied hitch.

Really enjoy driving the vehicle, nice and smooth.
  • phil47phil47 Member Posts: 394
I've actually never found my 2001 PF LE noisy in the dry, but it definitely is unusually loud in the rain. The first time I drove in the rain, I thought for sure my back hatch glass was open!! I'm now used to it. Spraying some rubberized undercoat in the wheel wells helps a bit.

If you want a more quiet version of the PF, you'll have to turn to the QX4...$$, but it's still loud in the rain.

I'm confident that if you go for the PF, you won't regret it. Based on my own experiences and those posted here over the last couple years, problems are relatively few and typically minor in nature. Driving this vehicle (and my previous 99.5 PF LE) for the last 2 years has been a real pleasure.
  • bgritzbgritz Member Posts: 139
I had the same problem. just one more solution to add to the pile.
I took a 6 inch section of automobile water-pump hose (heavy black kind) slit it down the middle of one side, applied a LIBERAL amount of clear silicone to the inside, and slid it over the right hitch hanger.
14 mos later, no noise, no problems, and the hose has held up great.

I have not had any trouble with my drawtite hitch. The one I ordered via internet has a notch adjacent to the muffler to keep the two from banging...

I did not realize it was so tight under there until I installed the hitch.

Thankfully I must have gotten one of the updated designs.
  • colinj1colinj1 Member Posts: 13
The "rubber hose" solution sounds better to me. I might try that on our 01" Pathy. Thanks

finally i have the bumper replaced. the color is good, same as the factory, textile slightly difference but could not tell if you don't touch it. i also see some rough spots created by dust, the body shop guy said nothing is perfect but he promise me to buff (??) the surface after couple days, the paint is too new. i think he had to sand it or something. should i just let it go?? no way, right?? am i too picky here? should it be just perfect and smooth as new?

    Inthemix:

Are you sure that the dealer is discounting 2002 Pathfinders significantly below invoice? I could understand why 2001 Pathfinders would be heavily discounted, but not 2002s. Thanks.
  • skips2skips2 Member Posts: 52
It does not sound like the body shop did a great job. I can understand why a repaint job won't look exactly like the factory paint job because the factory paint job is baked on. The repaint would not be baked on. I would first get a second opinion from another body shop. Armed with the second opinion, I would revisit the person who did the repaint job and request that it be redone.

Did anyone recently bought a standard 2001 PF LE (with leather) in Seattle area? I really had a hard time negotiating with dealers for a deal. I can not believe they won't go under $32000 for a new 01 PF, $31000 for a demo with 4800 miles, and the price is after that $1000 rebate!
