My time to chime in again.... Yes, buying in Canada and bringing it home to the US will save you thousands. Over 60 of us have shown it will. You just need to know the few details and do a little paperwork. Duty at the border is only 2.5% Sorry I don't have time today to write more. See one of my dozens of posts above for some basics (#2610 is good). But prices are lower now because the exchange rates is better. Figure a total of US$27,400 for an LE with AWD and leather.

re: Windsor... I know of no one from the US who's been happy with any dealer in the Windsor area and bought there. High prices, incompetance on paperwork, arrogance, you name it. I can't explain it. But therefore have no recommendations there. Everyone goes to Toronto. Yeah, I know it's another hour or so, but it just seems to be the place to go. Best prices, selection, service. Lots more competition helps.

As ususal, I have all the info (and contacts if you want them) and will send it out to anyone. Just write me.

For those interested in buying across the border, here's a new deal for you.

Just talked to my local dealer and Nissan Canada is releasing a Chilkoot edition in the next couple of weeks. Its basically the SE package (cd changer, side running boards, adjustable drivers seat) minus the fender flares and with optional automatic with All-Mode 4WD. He quoted me $33900 Cdn for the 5 spd which is less than the MSRP of the XE base model.

No HID's coming on the Path. It's labeled that way because the QX4 and Path share the same fusebox. QX4 HID's won't fit the Path body.

    Hey everyone,

I am at the 31K mark with my truck. Had some issues with it in the past and am fast approaching the 36K mark. Has anyone purchased the extended warranty for their Pathy, and if so have you used it or had any experience?

At 22K, my check engine light came on and the dealer diagnosed it as a faulty ECU engine module, and reprogrammed it. The rear window seal needs replacing, and I have slack in the driveline. Love the truck, but dont want it to go out of warranty and have problems start to surface.

On another note, has anyone experienced driveline slack yet? I would describe it as when you are coasting at anything less than 65 or so, foot off the gas, and then tap the gas. I feel a thunk, like the driveshaft and u-joints have play or something. Lower speeds are more noticeable, but just tapping on the gas when coasting or when you want to speed up, makes the thunk. Taking it in Wed for 30K service, and will elt you know what they say, but curious if anyone else has this.

Thanks for all the great advice...this is a great group!!

This is normal. Every vehicle I have every owned has had this slack: Ford, Chevy, Buick, Jeep, Nissan, cars and trucks. It seems to be more noticable in the rear-wheel drives.

Called svc dept to make appointment for Friday, and told him of the problem. He said he's seen another Pathy in for a similar thing and it was the U-joints..will let you all know Sat.

I want to replace the wimpy stock horn on my 01Pathfinder. Has anyone done this and if so what did you get, and where did you get it.

    Thanks,

Anyone know where I can see one of those underground photos that are always out whenever a vehicle gets a new look? I want to buy an SE next year, but I need to see the new one first.

    Thanks.
  • goblue96goblue96 Member Posts: 33
I asked the same questions here in March about the wimpy horn. There are actually two horns in the PF. One is very easy to spot, right near the grill. The other is tucked in by the battery. I purchased a new horn (I think there pretty standard parts) from pep boys for about $10.00 and replaced only the "easy" horn. It was an amazingly simple process, probably three minutes with an adjustable wrench. Obviously you'll get better sound by replacing both, but just changing the front one helped greatly for me. Good luck!

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone has noticed any difference in stopping distance when using awd? From a technical standpoing does it make a difference?

    thanks.
  • tidestertidester Member Posts: 10,059
    omega,

I can't think of any good reason why they'd be different except possibly that engine inertia might resist braking more when AWD is on.

I just moved up here from Biloxi, MS about 2 weeks ago. My 2001 LE performed great during my 4,000 mile trek accross the USA.

Where should I bring my PF in for service in this area?

I'm coming from Pat Peck Nissan (which had TOP NOTCH service) along w/ $8.88 oil changes!

Would like to find something similair here - Can anyone help me out!

    Thanks

BTW: I also got my CD's back from Clarion/Nissan just before leaving MS - It took over 4-5 months though to do so.

There should be no reason why braking distances would get shorter or longer with or without AUTO mode engaged.

That having been said, the last time I used AWD was during a river crossing last weekend...actually, the trail crossed the river several times as did I (Very cool!). The braking distances were greatly increased...so, I guess you could say that all other factors being equal (river crossings notwithstanding), braking should not be effected.

Actually, according to the following statement from the Nissan website (under the description of the all mode 4WD system), it appears braking is improved under some conditions when the auto mode is engaged.

" The AUTO-mode torque control is also linked to the All-Terrain ABS, enhancing braking effectiveness and vehicle stability when ABS is applied."

If someone can explain technically why, I'd be interested...

Does that mean the viscosity of the transmission fluid contributes to braking?

Depending on which wheels (front or back) are getting more grip, the computer would transfer more torque (therefore fluid viscosity and rolling friction) to those wheels. Sounds reasonable...

I used to have a 90 4Runner which also had a wimpy horn (excuse me please). I bought a "Fiamm" air horn, which was nice and loud. It lasted a year (I think I used it 5 times - all demoing it to others). Frustrated, I removed it, and bought "truck horns" (horns are designed as a pair - the sounds "clash", making them more irritating and therefore more noticeable to sleepy drivers). These are standard type horns (vibrating disc with snail-shape projector). They are quite a bit larger than normal "car" horns. On the 4Runner I had to mount them inside the bumper ends (which were removable from the main front bumper). There was no room in front of the rad.
These horns are available from most auto parts stores. There is plenty of room behind the grill of the Pathfinder to mount them. Use a "horn relay" to drive them directly (though a fuse of course) from the battery. The relay is tripped by the horn wire from the stock horn (either one). You can then put a switch in that wire so you have:
    1. Excuse me horn.
    2. Get out of the *#$% way!!! horn.
I advise using the latter carefully. You don't want some nut to start shooting ;-)

Our 2001 LE will turn 25K this weekend. So far the only mechanical issue would be the trans slipping on occasions. I have determined it is caused by certain driving habits. It should be addressed by Nissan so if I ever get off my lazy, I'll have it checked out.
Remember the temp gauge issue awhile back? Funny how unimportant it is! I never read it so maybe thats is why Nissan never fixed the problem.

I have a question if anyone considered changing their headlight with xenon factory headlight which are standard in the Pathfinder in New Zealand.

    Thanks

I believe they use them in France too. I don't see how it would be a problem.

My brand new 2001 LE's temperature gauge reads about 5 degrees too high. Will Nissan fix this under its warranty. My LE has 200 miles on it. I just brought it.

When driving in AWD during engine braking if the ABS sensors detect the rear wheels starting to slide on snow or ice the torque will be distributed to the front axle to help in engine braking. The manual calls it "Torque distribution corresponding with engine brake" The clutches are engaged by the pumps in the tranfercase to transfer torque from the rear axle to the front axle. The manual has several pages on the subject, this is the simplified version.

i have towed my 6x12 box trailer loaded with large harley and so many other things you couldn't see the harley. trailer probaly weighs 2000# and tongue weight is 300#. did this 96 4runner 180 h.p. never turned off o.d. have over 10000 miles towing, and never had a problem. just bought 02 pathfinder and hope to do the same. with 240 h.p. and more torque it should be easier,we'll soon see?

There is a relatively easy and cheap do-it fix that helps a lot (doesn't completely cure over-read). Very simply; detach sensor in front of rad, gently pry loose the fitting. Attach a flexible steel strap to upright bar in front of rad. There is a tapped hole, can use screw from front license. Bend strap to almost protrude throgh grill near Nissan Emblam. Attach sensor to strap, pointing out, behind grill. I used a nylon "pull tite" strap. Done.

I am the proud owner of a 2001 fully loaded pathfinder with Navigation system and was curious to find out what the resale value of my vehicle should be. This black on black beauty with under 9500 miles went to dealership just to price trade in values. I was shocked to hear from the dealership that my pathfinder was only worth $21,000. Now this in my opinion was ridiculous, however, I will say that the dealership was an upscale one. I didn't really want to trade it anyway, but would have been happier if the resale value held up better. Anyone out there experience this.
  • stuartboniastuartbonia Member Posts: 56
All vehicles lose a ton the first two years, something like 35% to 40%.

With a dealer you buy from them at retail and they buy from you at wholesale.

I have a 01 SE and the gauges (temp, speedometer, tachometer, fuel)and the odometer have intermittently shut down while driving. The compass readout also stays in one direction during this period. They come back after a while. Since it is intermittent, the Nissan Service techs probably will never find it. Has anyone else experienced this problem?
  • skips2skips2 Member Posts: 52
I'll try that, if Nissan refuses to fix. Thanks.

Could anyone refer me to some previous posts on headlight upgrades to Hella, Cibie, Philips, Sylvania, or PIAA for a 2001-2002 Pathfinder? I was out on another board and there's a lot of Honda Civic details -- I am looking for better vision without modification of the reflectors and/or upgrading the wiring harness. Has anyone upgraded their headlights and was it worth the $70? Thanks.

There is a "Unified Meter Control Unit" that controls all of the meters and other items that you mentioned. There is a self check of the system. On page EL-97 of the service manual shows how to do a check on the instruments and this Control Unit. Might disconnect the battery overnight and it might reset the unit there might be some static electricity in the unit. Just a thought it is up to you make the decision.

now I guess b/c I got used to it..Sometimes a passenger will ask why its right in the middle
but I really dont have an answer why..Anyone ??

Replaced stock bulbs on 2001 SE with PIAA Extreme White Bulbs. Love them! Did both the head lights and the fog lights. Paid about $60 a pair for the H4s and H3s at autosupermart.com with price match. I compared the light quality after I installed the 1st head lamp. Far superior, brightness, whiteness and distance to the stock bulbs. After a week I have not had one oncoming auto object to the "dim" setting with these lights. Wouldn't own a car w/o them or equivalent.

    Robert,
That is a "diversity" antenna. It helps sort out signals to give you better reception in tight places such as large downtown areas with lots of tall buildings and mtn valleys.

    All,

Just had my 30K checkup, $500. Painfull....Peters Nissan in Nashua NH. Good service, a little higher than others in the area, but they do a lot for the $$. This truck sure is an expensive handfull when you consider maint, gas. Just put 4 Michelin Cross Terrains on for another $700.

As for my other issues, I had a VERY annoying squealing/high pitch noise coming from under hood, and had it at another dealer three times in the spring to see if they could fix it. THey eventually replaced the belts, but when it gets cold out, the noise is right back.

So, at Peters they attempted the fix. They replaced the belts (second time in 30K), and the AC compressor. Cleaned the pulleys. THe next cold morning, still there. Will let you know...getting on my nerves, researching lemon laws. Hate to push it, but for a $30K truck, I should'nt have to deal with it. Anyone think I am wrong for insisting the cold start be as quiet and normal as any other car? Some may think I am listening too hard, but after a couple of weeks the noise gets worse, and the squealing louder. Nervous that I am nearing the end of the factory warranty and dont want to get caught with a big bill..

I'd also be interested in a changeover to Xenons. Won't be cheap though! I have them in my other car (real Xenons, not fakes) and they're nice. But you won't want to get them from New Zealand, since they are RHD. The cutoff pattern is backwards and you'll blind oncoming traffic. Can anyone confirm they are also made for LHD? Nissan France doesn't even list the Pathfinder anymore. All we need are the housings - all else would be available from the US as QX4 parts.

We had a squealing noise in our 01 LE. Had the compressor changed and it is no longer there.

Conditions needed: any. The beauty of AWD is that it functions invisibly (or at least, without driver intervention).

Love to know what you think about the new Michelin Cross Terrains that you got. Are they worth the price? Thanks.
  • sysadmin1sysadmin1 Member Posts: 122
Will do. So far they seem fine, but this winter will tell. Wanted a good tire, but not too aggressive.
  • li_sailorli_sailor Member Posts: 1,081
xplorx4 is certainly correct....you can leave it in AWD all the time and it will engage when you need it.

However, it uses a bit more gas in AWD. I only use it when there is a chance there will be some snow or ice conditions on the road (quite a bit in the winter). After all...if the rear wheels don't slip at all, it will not operate. I leave it in 2WD the rest of the year (except when I use 4WD).

    Just my $.02

My '01 SE (Canadian) with AWD, LSD, cloth seats has been flawless so far. No shake, rattle or roar. Since gas has come down to $1.19 for 91 octane there isn't much to gripe about on that aspect, mileage figure creeping up with break in and fluid changes. Still have very low mileage though, about 5200 miles. I was piqued when some A. H. stole one of the hub cover inserts, replacement for this little round piece of molded plastic, lo $28.20/hi$43.50. Hi bid from local top 25 Nissan USA dealers. It pays to shop on the internet. Also my taupe (Bronzed Gray) finish doesn't show dirt, eat your heart out Black Pathy owners. Bob L.
