I beg to differ, the Patrick Stewart version of A Christmas Carol is the best.

Ditto on the Patrick Stewart version.  Nothing like a member of the Shakespearian Theatre Group to play the ogre the way he was meant to be played.

Just got a phone call from my son.  The results of his Thursday MRI shows that the malignant tumor has shrunk now to 1/4 of its original size.  Doctors say the 4 more treatments will hopefully do the trick, however he doesn't know yet if he has to have chemotherapy.  His memory is getting worse as are the sores and ringing in his ears, but the news is ALL GOOD at this point.

I am so thankful that his SO has stood by him all these months and cared for him.  I am also so very thankful for having all your prayers and hopes for his recovery.  This is the one case in 250 where there may be a complete irradiation of the cancer.  Thanks for all your continued prayers - God is listening!!!

One of the bad parts was the trip home. The idler pulley bearing froze the pulley and broke the serpentine belt along I70. Coasted onto an exit ramp with the engine off when it hit 248 deg. F.. Sat for over 2 hours waiting for AAA tow truck. Cold. AAA kept giving later times for the wait. Gonna check on how my tow from State Farm works: may start using that rather than AAA.

    What vehicle?
2003 leSabre. GM products: the pulley only went 186,000 miles. :grin

There probably isn't an open towing agency within 15 miles and 30 miles on Sunday evening where my car chose to collapse.
I had a spare belt in the trunk. I did NOT have my tools with a wrench that could have held the tensioner while I put the belt on. Didn't make a difference when I was checking pulleys and found the idler bad.

I keep thinking I should have noticed a noise from the pulley and checked for a noise.

It was fine when I put on a new belt 30-40 K miles earlier a few years back.

You went on a long trip in a car with 186k miles on it? Wow, I thought I was the gambler driving old cars. :s
In 1970, when I was 19 years old, I paid $100 for a 13 year old 1957 Ford and drove it from Texas to Iowa. 19 hour drive, did it straight up stopping only for gas / snacks. Would I try that again? What, are you crazy???

1981...drove from Oxford, OH to San Francisco, CA.....in a Pinto (not mine) with my best friend at the time... Stopping only for food, bathroom breaks and an occasional nap. Oh, to be young and stupid, again!

I just pulled out the navigation system manual for the wife's Forester. 330 pages! Are you kidding me?

Granted it also has instructions for the audio system, etc, and there is stuff we would never use, but 330 pages? The first 167 pages are only navigation.

    What have we come to?

The new car came with 2 manuals - one for "COMMAND" which includes GPS, Audio and Bluetooth and the other is for operation of the vehicle.  Additionally, there is a manual built into the harddrive that uses DVD demos on how to operate the Distronic Plus System, Lane tracking, blind spot monitors etc.

You pull it up using the Mbrace features.  This technology is getting mighty sophisticated.  The car even steers itself when in cruise to maintain a center location in the lane.  It's like driving a robot!

    I can dig it.

Her car has the regular owners manual too (along with other sundry booklets) that must weigh 2 pounds (900 g. for Driver :) ). I didn't have the nerve to look at the last page to see how many pages there are, but it's probably twice as thick as just the Navigation system manual.

Subaru recommends that you read the manuals before operating the vehicle, as most makers probably do. Cripes! You would have to take a cab for about a week while reading all the manuals. :)

I'm starting to think that a lot of what is available for use on these new cars will go unused because of how difficult they make it to use. Some manufactures more than others, obviously. The saturation point seems to have been reached.

IMHO, the Bill Murray version of A Christmas Carol is the best. :)

Last year, a young lady in my son's class had a yellow Camaro delivered to the circular drive in front of the high school the day after she got her license. It had a big bow on it and it was quite the spectacle. My son has little patience for her and the "glamour girls" clique she is part of. He told me that she didn't like the color and had her parents exchange it for a white one. She isn't a bad kid. She is just the child of over indulgent parents.

The latest scuttle is that the Camaro hasn't been at school in a while. First offense for speeding for a junior operator is 90 day suspension and going through the learner's permit process all over again. Second offense is a 1 year suspension.

Same as cellphones/smartphones. Most don't even provide a manual now. You can find some documentation online if you want to look it up. But there are functions and features buried in them that most owners won't ever know about, much less use. I have given up trying to use Apple maps for anything useful because of the lack of instruction, for example. Using Google maps on an Apple touch device is even worse now.

I'll admit there is a lot of "stuff" on my smartphone (Android, Samsung Note 4) that I will never use. But Google Maps I do use, quite often. I'm looking forward to the day (which is coming, have no doubt) when the stereo in my car's dash will be nothing but an extension of the smartphone in my pocket. Google Maps (and it's built in Navigation) is better than nearly all of the built in NAV units, and it's free with your smartphone. Carry all of your music on a 128 gig flash memory card in the phone, or stream music from any of a number of sources. Yes, it's coming.

  • Subaru Outback "Take 2".

Last time I posted I mentioned our brand new Outback had been hit by a hail storm in transit to the dealer. Long story short, the dealer purchased the car back, Colorado taxes and all. They had a similar Outback in transit that was scheduled to arrive shortly after returning our Outback, and the dealer gave us a loaner in the meantime since we had already sold our minivan. When the new Outback arrived my salesman noted it didn't have all the features we wanted, and included remote start which we didn't order, so he wanted to have the dealer's service department add the missing hitch and auto dimming mirrors.

I was sort-of okay with the situation until I learned about the remote start, which is a deal killer, and when they couldn't remove the option, we essentially cancelled the deal and started over by ordering a new Outback from the factory to our specifications.

Subaru promptly delivered a brand new 2015 Outback loaner to replace the dealer's loaner while we awaited ours to be built in Indiana. The loaner is close to ours in specifications except for missing Eyesight and a factory tow hitch.

Fast forward a couple of months and my sales rep just let me know our new Outback arrived at the dealership, and for those that remember my first experience, he was quick to point out there were no holes drilled in my new bumper per my instructions :-)

Monday they'll have the clear bra installed and then we'll pick up our third new Outback in a two-month span. What a bizarre experience, but I'm grateful both Subaru and the dealer stepped up to make the situation right. If anything good came out of this, it would be that I now have an Outback with no holes in the front bumper, and instead of driving 3,000 winter miles on my new Outback, I did so on loaner vehicles. Plus my insurance went down for a few months by removing one of our cars.

Oh, and I love the Outback. If I were to total our 2012 Impreza I'd replace it with another Outback in a heartbeat. I'll post a more in-depth review later.

the Auto dimming rear view mirror with homelink? Or just the plain old Auto Dimming mirror? Which do you want? If it is the plain auto dimming mirror, I have one that I will GIVE to you.

What don't you like about the remote start?

I'm really happy with my Legacy. I'd buy another Subaru in a heartbeat (especially one with a little more power). I'm coming up on 5K miles since the end of September.

    Enjoy the new Outback.

All I have to do is plug my phone into the iPhone wire in my console and it works like a iPod while charging my phone. I can stream IHeart and Pandora and iTunes Radio from my phone right to my Audio System. Mercedes has a built in APP for their own radio stations which works via satellite. My car also has a Flash Memory insert just below the CD/DVD slot. So, the "it's coming" is "already here". As for Navigation, even though I have Google Maps, the one that comes with the car is superior, IMHO.

But you are correct - technology is moving so fast it's hard to keep up with it.

900 g for me is very thoughtful. I grew up with pounds so I actually can relate to pounds better than kgs. I guess 1 kg = 2.2 pounds (or is it the other way around?). I also relate to Fahrenhiet better than Celsius.

I did get an lol out of taking a cab for a week while you read the manual. I think dealers would really be way ahead if they offered courses on using the equipment. Buyers of new cars would learn more about their cars and appreciate them more. It would be a bit social and you would meet like minded people who like the same cars. What a great way to build customer loyalty and increase sales.

The first replacement Outback was missing the auto dimming exterior side mirrors with puddle LED lighting. The interior auto dimming rear view mirror with Homelink and compass was installed, but those exterior ones are a bit more rare, apparently.

I had a bad experience with remote start that has turned me off for at least quite awhile. Remember that POS Dodge Journey my company provided me several years ago? I'd go out to the garage and find the thing idling away, or at other times I'd be in the kitchen and hear the double-beep and then the engine turn over. Darned thing would randomly turn itself on, and in an enclosed garage, that's obviously a terrible trait. I just don't trust them. I know, I know. It was a Dodge. Anything could happen. But if I can avoid he technology, like I do sunroofs, then I will.

Good to hear the Legacy is working out well! Even in the taller Outback the gas mileage has been excellent, about 34 mpg on my 75ish mph run to Denver, driving arond the city, and back. My daily urban commute returns around 29/30 mpg.

The "genius bar" idea at some dealerships is a good one.

When I last got a new car ('98), the salesperson dug up the manual and let me read it while we were doing the week long negotiation. These days about the only holdout for putting manuals online is VW/Audi.

I had a factory manual for my Quest and then wound up with a digital version. The digital one was much easier to search and navigate, although the paper version absorbed the grease stains better. The digital one was about $10 (or free at some sites) - $140 cheaper than the paper one.

What I was thinking of was a post over in the diesel forum by one of the regulars there, complaining that the NAV on his $50k VW Touareg was very out of date and almost useless.

Those NAV units typically cost, what, $1k or so as an option? Insane, in my opinion.

I will admit to not seeing the Patrick Stewart version. George C. Scott did a credible version some time ago. Got points for having a scene on Christmas Day which is in the book but missing from the Alistair Sim version.

I will admit that one gets a bias towards movies you've had your whole life. With Christmas Carol growing up the choices were the 1951 version or the 1938 with Reginald Owen. No contest.

When I had the Solara it had two equally big manuals - one for the car and one for the nav.

My score was 85%.  Good grief - the Henry J and Willys got me - I really don't remember those models.  Studebakers and Fords were the easiest along with Cadillac.  DeSoto was difficult because the looked so much like Chrysler's.

What's nice about the Mercedes NAV's is that they give 3 free updates for the hard drive (completed every year for 3 years when the car is brought in for it's once-a-year A or B service).  All they do is plug the car in to a Mercedes Technical website and download the update to the existing hard drive.  Nice feature - keeps the NAV current.  After 3 years, there is a nominal charge for updates.

I am on my way out for the evening too. My wife loves Indian food (not a Canadian tradition for Christmas) so we will take my daughter, 3 grandchildren, one girlfriend and the SIL out for dinner tonight.

My wife is getting so into the Florida lifestyle I think she has given up cooking with a stove. I am thinking of selling the stove in our Florida home and using that space for a computer hutch. :'(

If I survive this dinner, I'll check in later tonight or tomorrow morning. If applicable, may you have a very Merry Christmas, otherwise, have a very pleasant, content, and satisfying evening.

I'm glad you are checking in & all is well with the 3rd Outback. Got a question for you. When you start the car up in the AM or after work, does it idle high at about 1900 RPM & then settle down when you put the car in Drive or let it idle for more than 2 minutes?

the Auto dimming rear view mirror with homelink? Or just the plain old Auto Dimming mirror? Which do you want? If it is the plain auto dimming mirror, I have one that I will GIVE to you.

What don't you like about the remote start?

I'm really happy with my Legacy. I'd buy another Subaru in a heartbeat (especially one with a little more power). I'm coming up on 5K miles since the end of September.

We once owned a Cadillac with the auto dimming mirror and we HATED it and disabled it.

I didn't get the remote start either unless they wanted to charge them for it?

Car identification online quiz. It looked a little familiar; may have
    already been posted on here.

My score was 85%.  Good grief - the Henry J and Willys got me - I really don't remember those models.  Studebakers and Fords were the easiest along with Cadillac.  DeSoto was difficult because the looked so much like Chrysler's.

Thanks Imid, for allowing us to go back in time for a few minutes.

    Got 100% correct!

I guess I AM a dinosaur after all!

I'm glad I contributed something several of you have enjoyed.

The Mercurys of various years was a hard one for me and the Willys and Henry J
are always hard to figure out. I saw examples of both this summer in
some of the cruise-ins/car shows I attended.

Yes!  Thanks again - it was very enjoyable except for those of us who can't remember last year, let alone 60+ years ago.  But it was great therapy to sharpen our minds.

Thanks nyc....Boxing Day has become a big sale day in Canada....as in Boxing Day Sale. It is celebrated on Dec 26th, and for most people it is a day for recovering from all the festivities and it is a holiday from work.

    I always forget how it came about, so once again I looked it up. Heres a simple explanation;

In Britain, it was a custom for tradespeople to collect "Christmas boxes" of money or presents on the first weekday after Christmas as thanks for good service throughout the year. This custom is linked to an older English tradition: since they would have to wait on their masters on Christmas Day, the servants of the wealthy were allowed the next day to visit their families. The employers would give each servant a box to take home containing gifts and bonuses, and sometimes leftover food.

Most people think it is called Boxing Day because it is the day everyone throws out all there gift boxes.

Thanks for thinking about wishing a Happy Boxing Day nyc......much appreciated.

And here I was thinking that since you were taking you SIL out for dinner, it would become a "boxing match" between you and the SIL.  I learn something every day here on Edmunds!!!

Just briefly.....the dinner went well. The grandchildren who are young adults now were a lot of fun. The youngest from this group who is 16 showed us pictures of her new boyfriend. Picture of him catching a huge fish, skiing, doing sommersaults on a trampoline, some art work........and he is only 16. That kid has done more at 16 than I have done at 67.

We started trying to outdo each other thinking of things he has done, climbed Mt Everest, been an astronaut, climbed Machu Picchu, flown an executive jet, tried out for the Yankees.......

    We were ROFLO(our)AO

LOL...that was funny! I was hesitant about how this would work out but everyone was fine, and we all had a good time. We just can't talk about business stuff I guess.

Mitsubishi, which used to charge $199 per update, has moved to free Nav updates for life. That's only for the latest models, something like 2014 and newer, so for my 2010 I paid. But I've only updated once in five years so figure about $40 a year. :)

Personally I feel it should at minimum be a warranty issue; once map data is out of date its essentially broken and should be repaired, i.e. updated, under the same warranty that covers the physical components of the Nav system. Ditto software updates if there are any bug fixes included.

I think they consider it a wear and tear item like wipers, tires, or a clutch, not a faulty part. My guess is car companies first saw updates as a cash stream where they would get income from it for many years. When people realize the updates are worth so little to produce and install they wouldn't pay $200 a year for them, they decided to give them away to help sales.

I didn't get my bmw updated for 3 years and I doubt if I missed any new road in that time. Unless your a delivery driver I doubt anyone really needs yearly updates.

That reminds me, I like how the new E400 gives you traffic updates and tells you if there is a traffic problem ahead. Finding alternatives is easier too. Who knows what they will have in 3 more years?

Traffic problems, weather alerts, etc. is also Available on my Fusion, but it is through Sirius. I didn't feel the need especially since the traffic is only in larger cities as I understand, and for the weather I use my phone or look out the window. :) Before my full trial ended I could just say "Weather Map" and it would pop up on the screen.

I do like how I say, "I'm hungry" and it will list restaurants nearby to choose from and the NAV will plot a route. Sometimes I use it just for giggles.

Here in the Caribbean Boxing Day is a legal holiday. Everything is closed except for bars. This is the tIime of year when almost all go to a picnic on the beach. It is usually a bigger event than Christmas Day itself.

    @driver100‌

Driver, have you tried the wearher feature yet?  You select the top right "world globe" on your main screen, press on it, then rotate the controller clockwise until you get to weather.  Press it and you will see a "map" option - press on that.  You will need to wait 3-5 minutes after first starting the car for it to completely update.  You can zoom in on any area of the U.S. or Canada to see where the weather fronts are, where the rain is and how hard it's raining and the direction the wind is blowing and at what speed.  It is all radar activated as well.

As for updates to the NAV system, you can request one whenever your car is in for service.

I really like the traffic feature.  I use it every morning to find out which routes are moving freely.  It even will show you a readout along all routes where there is a traffic alert.  The new system even shows traffic on major streets as well as highways and interstates.
