I passed a nice E class on the Thruway today. A dark/smoke gray E350. very sharp looking. Does not look as big as I think it really is.
I just checked. It is (footprint wise) almost identical to my Sonata, though I think it is lower. that might make it look smaller. A whole bunch heavier. An E400 is 4,189#s? Ouch.

Yes, it is pretty heavy even with the small block aluminum V6. The curb weight on mine is over 4200 lbs due to the extra options. I'm getting 33.5 mpg highway at 70 mph (35 mpg at 65 mph). Combined is running 24.8 mpg and around town it's 21 mpg. Not bad considering its weight.
I don't think they make a manual transmission in the C Class. But that new C400 4Matic is some car. I drove one and with the paddle shifters and you can hold gears forever.
That C Class is truly a gorgeous piece of machinery. Too small for me.
The 2017 E Class is going to look like a downsized S Class - supposed to be one good looking vehicle. Due out in about 18-20 months - can't wait to see what they do with that car.
It may be 50/50 chance the new C will look better than the current model. I actually like the last model C better for styling....I know the new one is a better car. For one thing, I like the built in NAV screen on the older model.

I parked next to a Sonata a few days ago and I was surprised to see the Sonata was almost the same size as the E - we weren't exactly even and I thought the Sonata was actually longer.. I didn't notice if it was lower, but, it is deceiving judging the length of a car....it depends on lines they use, window line, squared off or rounded etc. But, one just assumes the E400 would be a bigger car, but it is only in weight, about 25% more which is a lot.
I find the E feels surprisingly light. Gas mileage is excellent (Mikes numbers are similar to mine) considering the size and weight of the car.

Driver, the new C IS THE NEW C! What I mean is that the 2015 C is totally redesigned from the 2014 model. It looks like a baby S Class from the outside. You might want to stop by a Mercedes Dealer and take a look at it.
As for the NAV screen being built in, the new technology for most cars is leaning toward the movable screen which is wider and higher. When not in use, it can be lowered. That is what I did not like about the new CLS.
A few weeks ago, we were discussing pin-stripes and vinyl roofs and the fact that, for the most part, they are a bit passe. But just as I was coming in to our community through one of the security gates, I saw a brand new White Buick LaCrosse checking in with the security guard that had this curvy black pin-stripe from nose to rear and a black vinyl roof. The pin-stripe looked like it was hand-painted which mine always were.
I would think that between the pin-stripes and the vinyl roof, the guy must have paid $1500+ more for his car. The Buick dealership must have seen him coming, if you know what I mean. Of course, each to his/her own, but it totally ruined the beautiful lines of the new LaCrosse. Only in South Florida where the average age of the retirees is "deceased" would you find a car like that.

I don't know if the stripes were put on by paint or using the stickon, but there's a group that specializes in custom striping. The extra swirls and squiggles make me dizzy.
I applied pinstripes to my black Malibu. I applied a line that accents the line of the car and window ledges. It's a light tan which matches the seats inside, but people can't tell that through the windows.

I do not think the NAV screen in the new C class is movable. Pretty sure it is fixed in position like in the CLA. It will be interesting to see what approach they take when the redesigned E class comes out in a year or two.

If I wanted pin-stripes on my car, I would have them painted on by an artist who specializes in striping. When I was in the business, Lexus would not put on strips, but required salesmen to contact the pro who hand-painted them. At Infiniti, all cars received those taped pin-stripes and clear plastic door edge guards so the owner could add them as an addendum to the price of the car. They cost him $40 a car and he marked them up to $250. I had so much aggravation with them peeling off and getting some poor surveys because of it. He also had a $799 dealer fee which was horrible. But he refused my continued requests to do away with those add-ins.
My Mercedes dealer adds the plastic door edge guards and plastic door handle guards too all the cars. You can't see them unless you look carefully. I do not remember if he adds them as an addendum cost or not.
Back to pin-stripes: the guy who painted them on would charge me $150 to do my car - but if the dealer had them painted on for a customer, they charged $250.

I am sure they will do the same thing as they did in the CLS - which is unfortunate. But if that's what they are going to do, I'll be stuck with it. I guess you can get used to almost anything.
If you look at the safety issue with a cold rational eye, there is really no such thing as "a safe car". At best, and given the premise of a good driver, you could possibly say "some cars are less dangerous than others".
But a "safe car"? That's like saying "a safe shark tank". I mean, 32,000 highway deaths a year---that's almost a full football stadium full of people every year.
Would anyone call some other apparatus "safe" if 32,000 people a year died using it?
I totally appreciate modern safety features but I wouldn't want my kids to be operating under the delusion that their 2015 car is totally "safe".

Cars are way more safe than 20+ years ago. However, drivers are immeasurably more dangerous than 20+ years ago. Hopefully it's close to a wash.
I believe that Shifty. Like most smart motorcycle drivers that drive paranoid. Analogous to big SUV drivers that drive the same speed in snow/ice, and often end up in the gully.
speaking of padded roofs, I saw one last week up here in Jersey. It was a dark brown roof on a tan Camry. I actually see more Camrys done that way now than other cars. Or at least those are the ones I remember. And I think this was the newer body style, but don't hold me to that part!

Today I saw a tan Suzuki (I think it said) Verona with a beige canvas type, convertible looking top. Behind the rear side window it said "Roadmaster". Made me gag a little, but the lady driving it looked pretty proud.

I guess it's all relative. In 2012 there were 33,561 highway fatalities in the U.S., which worked out to 10.7 per 100K population.
In 1937, 29.4 people died per 100K population, and in 1972 there were 54,589 traffic fatalities (both are highest since cars were introduced). Fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles driven was the highest the first year it was calculated, at 24.1. The lowest (up until 2012 anyway) was 1.1 in 2011.

And I saw a white Honda Civic 2 door with a roof he painted shiny black to look like a Mercedes type panoramic sunroof!
I just had a call from our great IT employee. We remain friends. Just a reminder, he is a genius, knows lots, but doesn't know much about cars.
He has a 2002 Honda Civic which he bought used about 8 years ago...never had a problem, it has just under 100000 miles on it.
He just got rear ended and the insurance company says it isn't worth much. I looked up used value and it is about $1300 to $2100, I'll estimate $1600 - no a/c).
He doesn't know much about buying cars, I head back to Florida tomorrow, and he asked for help. He is not making much as he just started his own business. He does have savings because he is a minimalist. Some friends suggested leasing as he could write that off. I don't think he should lease....it is actually easier to get out of a car by owning. Also, tax advantage is about the same. First I suggested a 2 or 3 year old Civic with low mileage. I checked some and they want a lot of money for used Hondas, and very few have low mileage. So now, we are looking at new.
I decided to call a Honda dealer to see what I could do on the phone. I got a very nice salesman. I told him what I was doing and why, and explained I have quite a bit of experience buying cars, and I am trying to help someone.
He said the 2014s were sold out. My friend wants automatic and a/c. He suggested an LX model, it comes with that pluse cruise, rear camera, bluetooth, heated seats. The price he gave me was $20980. I asked if that was the sticker price or discounted price. He said he took $500 off.
He said if he buys the car by January 2nd Honda will take off an additional Holiday Sale amount of $500.
He has to pay sales tax and for a license.....prep was built in.
I could check more dealers but that sounds very reasonable to me. With tax it comes to $23707 less $500 if buys before Jan 2nd. I thought the car would be closer to $23000+$3000 tax.
I could phone around to see if there are any 2014s.
I found a 2009 that had 60k miles and they wanted $10000 for it. That's like 5 years of driving and it is only about half the price, with no warranty. Used prices are insane.
I tried another dealer with live chat and it broke down....I asked about 2014s and I think it messed them up when they went to check. I tried looking at new car inventory at another dealer and you have to call to find a price. Seems like a con.

Allow me a little sarcasm:
I'm confused. I thought Hondas were worth much much more than other cars. I thought they went forever so a car with 100K mi is only just broken in; 300K mi is when they might start to need preventative maintenance. :grin
Why is it worth so little?
I see a 2002 area Honda with 80K mi at $5400. I see a 2002 area Honda with 180K mi at $4500.
Both do have AC, but the afficianados would explain that means it gets better fuel economy because your friend's does not have AC.
One option is to let the insurance company find one similar to replace the damaged one at 100K and 2002 levels for $1300 if that's what they think. I had an 70 Mustang crunched from rear and that's the approach I took. They upped their offer rather than trying to find a 3-speed on the column WITH AC in the V8. Oh, did I mention that it was a Grande with the half vinyl roof and the houndstooth check cloth seats? Hard to find.
So I'm guess he had a DX sedan, right? You are talking wholesale value, not retail. The insurance company should be paying retail. With those miles, you wouldn't be able to touch it for less than $4k.
As for the new vehicle, I second the Fit. It would still be more refined than his 2002 Civic, while offering greater utility. An automatic LX is right about $17k.
'11 GMC Sierra 1500; '98 Alfa 156 2.0TS; '08 Maser QP; '67 Coronet R/T; '13 Fiat 500c; '20 S90 T6; '22 MB Sprinter 2500 4x4 diesel; '97 Suzuki R Wagon; '96 Opel Astra; '11 Mini Cooper S

I guess I look at this different, the car is incapable of doing anything on its own, it is all about the person behind the wheel. People ultimately determine how safe any activity is.
Interestingly enough I had an Econ professor that suggested they way to decrease accidents and injury would be to remove the air bag from the steering wheel and replace with a sword that deployed in an accident. Clearly far less people would even try to drive, but you can bet those few who did drive would be paying close attention.
I looked up the trade in value on Black Book Value...which is the Canadian Blue Book. That is the trade in value, not the selling price. It would take a lot to come out ahead of an insurance company, especially over a small amount.
Those prices for a 2002 are high, and those people are probably overvaluing their car. In the US a new Civic LX is probably about $18000. A 2002 is 13 years old now. That car is depreciating at a little more than $1000 a year....it doesn't make sense.
At 180K miles the 3/4s of the cars life is gone....the best 3/4s, so you are paying an inflated amount to get the last quarter.

Yes, his is a DX. He is supposed to get values from Auto Trader or something so you and imid could be right, maybe he will get $4000. I just looked up trade in value.
But, that is an important point and could help him get into the new car easier. He would need an LX to get automatic and air. $17k is US price, more like $21k in Canada, there is usually 20% difference and our dollar sunk from being close to par to being worth only 85 cents to the US $
I wanted to try another dealer just to compare, though I have a feeling the first dealer is OK.
I tried live chat....what B.S.! I say, I want the price of a 2015 Civic LX. She says, I have to check, can I have your name and phone number. I think, you don't need that to give me a price and tell her that. She wants my phone number and/or email address. I give her my Gmail address for these situations when i don't really want to deal with them. That was 15 minutes ago......no messages yet. All I need to know is the price, why all this nonesense. I don't care if it is high or low, just give me the price. Geez.
Driver, why not first build the car exactly the way your IT guy wants it. I don't believe there are many options on the car, so it should be easy. Once you get the price built, the invoice, and what the average Joe is paying for a 2015 Civic LX Sedan (or coupe), you should have a good starting point for negotiations. Then, call a few dealers and find out what they are willing to do. If I understand you correctly, there is another $500 in trunk money from Honda if purchased before January 1.
Why call Honda dealers before you price it here on Edmunds?

The car with 190K mi at a toyota dealer listed for $4490 and sold for $4164 per the Ohio Title Division. That's a fairly low markdown. Don't know if it's a bad credit sale and price stayed up or what. But $4164 for a car with 180K mi on it, is pretty high in my book. I know there are a lot of old, old Hondas putting around, some not so well, but people seem to want them. And see lots of older ones proportionally to other brands sitting along a road where they broke down (or ran out of gas).

That's a great idea...about building one. I will try that right now.
I can't use Edmunds, it's only good for US pricing. I can't find anything comparable in Canada. I'll let you know what I come up with.

yes, $500 is food until Friday Jan 2nd.
Sorry driver, I forgot you are in Canada. No, Edmunds won't help you. My mistake.
But there may be a Canadian link to something like TrueCar and the like that can at least give you a starting point.

The price the salesman gave me was $20980 less $500 if bought before Jan 2nd. I looked it up by building and it came to $20,223. I phoned the salesman, who seems to be a real straight shooter and he checked and said you have to add $1300 for automatic. That would make it $21523. He did say he took $500 off. I don't know if that is a big enough reduction, BMW and Mercedes gave me a 4% discount....but, I think $500 on a Honda is very fair.
No, Houdini. By the time I realized what she had done and figured out why my car reacted the way it did, I was far enough past her so that a 2 minute blast of my horn would not have the desired effect on her. Thank goodness my car reacted by swerving away from her so she didn't clip me on my right rear quarter panel. The car applies the brakes on one side of the car to move it away from the car in the Blindspot monitor. Does the same thing with lane tracking. In Distronic Plus, it's called ACTIVE lane keeping assist and ACTIVE Blindspot monitors.

Oh, come on, I can hear the sales patter already: "Well, this has 180,000 miles on it, but they're all highway miles, and of course this is a Honda, so that's nothing, really, for one of those... they are usually good for 300,000 miles or more before they really need any major work... that's why the price is what it is... if this was anything else other than a Toyota or a Honda, we wouldn't be asking as much, but people know these still have lots of life left..."

But your friend's car had just under 100K mi. Much, much better, and lots of life left in it if engine has not been abused with missing oil changes, etc..

Searching craigslist I find around $4500-$4000 the asking for a car between 80K mi and 120K mi. and 2001 to 2003.

That was hilarious but true. And Houdinis Ben Hur scene almost made me fall off my chair.

Yeh, but $4000 over 180K....people can ask what they want but there aren't too many people crazy enough to pay that, and the insurance companies know it. You can always find crazy prices because some people think THEIR car is worth a lot more than it is.

That is a 2 door and his is a 4 door, might make a bit of differnce. That one has a/c and other options his won't have, but, still, his should be over $3500 based on that.
I don't think it makes logical sense. $3500 for a 13 year old car, that you could buy for $18000 new....with all the safety equipment you all know and love.
My friend said he was paying about $1500 a year to keep his 12 year old Honda going. With that kind of depreciation, a little more than $1000 a year, it actually could cost less to have a new reliable car.....with a warranty!

I just checked. It is (footprint wise) almost identical to my Sonata, though I think it is lower. that might make it look smaller. A whole bunch heavier. An E400 is 4,189#s? Ouch.

I applied pinstripes to my black Malibu. I applied a line that accents the line of the car and window ledges. It's a light tan which matches the seats inside, but people can't tell that through the windows.

The car reacted much more quickly to the anticipated collision that I could have because I was just passing her as she pulled into my lane - so I was unaware she was moving into my lane. But the cameras and sensors on the right side and right rear of the car sent data to the Distronic computer which caused my car to move away from the possible collision without moving my car into the left lane.
Is my car safer than others? I don't know the answer to that question, however it did help me avoid a collision on the right side of my car as she moved into my lane. If I was not in Distronic Cruise control, she would have side-swiped me.

Fatalities per 100 million vehicle miles driven was the highest the first year it was calculated, at 24.1. The lowest (up until 2012 anyway) was 1.1 in 2011.

As others say: Different strokes. . .
So now, we are looking at new.
to be continued..........

Any opinions?

He could get a fit. Pretty cheap, and versatile to haul stuff.
2020 Acura RDX tech SH-AWD, 2023 Maverick hybrid Lariat luxury package.
Both do have AC, but the afficianados would explain that means it gets better fuel economy
because your friend's does not have AC.
2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
As for the new vehicle, I second the Fit. It would still be more refined than his 2002 Civic, while offering greater utility. An automatic LX is right about $17k.

2014 Malibu 2LT, 2015 Cruze 2LT,
Interestingly enough I had an Econ professor that suggested they way to decrease accidents and injury would be to remove the air bag from the steering wheel and replace with a sword that deployed in an accident. Clearly far less people would even try to drive, but you can bet those few who did drive would be paying close attention.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
But, that is an important point and could help him get into the new car easier. He would need an LX to get automatic and air. $17k is US price, more like $21k in Canada, there is usually 20% difference and our dollar sunk from being close to par to being worth only 85 cents to the US $
That $4000 is helpful.
2017 MB E400 , 2015 MB GLK350, 2014 MB C250
But certainly the insurance should pay retail since he has to buy a replacement. I assume though that the $1300 is after his deductible.

I tried live chat....what B.S.! I say,
I want the price of a 2015 Civic LX.
Geez.
