I think reliability wise all of the vehicles you are looking at are pretty good. They are quite different in shape and interiors though so those might be deciding factors. What works for your family.
I took a look at the Corolla last week. This week we're going to check out the Mazda 3.

One of the car mags did a comparison test and the HR-V ended up pretty low in the rankings. For me, CR-V/Escape is as small as I will go.

Dan Neil just panned the HR-V at the WSJ. I liked a lot of stuff about it; good interior configuration and excellent backup cam.

I however do things a little differently than most people, when I get that squiggly line under a misspelled word I go back and rewrite the word until I get it right. Now an interesting note; I wrote a book that partially took place in Brazil where they speak Portuguese so I was throwing in Portuguese words in where I though a native might use them when speaking to the main characters. My computer kept telling me the words were spelled wrong and gave me the Spanish equivalent as an alternative.

Thanks for posting the Civic pic, Driver. What I find interesting is the rear roof line, which reminds me of the Audi A7 and not a bad vehicle to use for inspiration. What I've read is that Honda will be producing a number of Civic iterations, including a sedan, coupe, and hatch, with normal, SI, and R models. This new generation is very attractive and indicates Honda is working hard to come back from the negative feedback on the current generation. I can respect that.

Just walked into the house after sitting in my car during a torrent of rain, multitudes of lightning strikes all around me, an continuous thunder. All the surface streets are flooded. We must have had 2-3 inches of rain.

One thing about Florida in rainy season - it rains "cats and dogs" most afternoons and evenings. When the sun comes out, the humidity gets so high you could do a load of laundry if you have some soap - just lay out the soapy clothes and the rain does the rinsing and then you have to put the clothes into the clothes dryer. No way anything dries outside this time of year.

Most of the months of June, July and August, we were actually in a drought. Still way behind the average rainfall for this year.

Florida may be hot, humid and rainy, but at least it has lots of bugs.

There are a fair number of old people here in AZ, but FL puts us to shame: water-cooled industrial-grade old people in huge numbers, most of whom hail from the northeast where people are ever so kind to each other.

We really don't have many bugs. Only in June (Junebugs) if you drive on I-75 across the Everglades, the Turnpike or the Sawgrass Expressway (parallels the Everglades).

I've seen palmetto bugs (giant roaches about 2-3 inches long and wide), but they are rare. Mosquitoes down here are no more plentiful than anywhere else.

As for the people - they are much worse than the bugs - and much more plentiful!

We're suffering a cold spell here. Tonight will be 47 deg (Fahrenheit) High today
didn't feel like it got much above 60. Went to only 1 car show because I felt others would
be lightly attended because of cold and threatening clouds. Where's that global
warming they talked about? Actually it's cooling and it shows here in the summer

OK, here's a mystery for the Edmunds detectives:

One of my latest daydreams is to get a nice, cheap, rust free pick up to replace my old 1988 van which is on it's last legs. When I think rust free I look to Tampa CL because I'm a little familiar with the area.

A few months ago we took an extended weekend and went to Mackinaw Island where cars are banned and there are tons of horse drawn, well everything. We took a tour on a horse drawn wagon (bus?) and we got off at one point and the guide said "Watch the puddles, it hasn't rained here in several days".

A recent post commented on the importance of knowing how to write an article and to use good English grammar. That is a big factor in the decline in the US's people. But there is another big factor and that is the ability to think in a logical manner. The ability to analyze and problem solve is even more important. This was well recognized by the departments at The Ohio State as my son went through the curriculum. Projects and working with others to solve major problems were a large part of his work. These successes even made it as points on his resume and served to indicate his abilities in both of his curriculum areas as well as his leadership/cooperation and problem-solving skills with others.

The problem solving is what has made many US companies stand out by developing things that the rest of the world then used their skills to copy and market more cheaply. The recent push by many states of the STEM concept for high schools echoes that importance.

The lack of analytical thinking skills means that many will accept whatever they see on the major news or Entertainment Tonight or Colbert as truth without actually analyzing the truth of the information, especially related to science and math. Lack of ability to analyze means that many will think balancing their budget means a visit to the payday loan offices or more money from the government in their subsidy payments.

In conclusion, be clear that I am pleased when someone clearly expresses their point in a post here and elsewhere, without giving a grade for the grammar if there are mistakes in grammar. But I don't labour over them; I'm more interested in the thought than the presentation. Occasionally I see one of my posts and see grammar mistakes I included because I was focusing on the thought and focusing on editing because brevity is not a forte of mine at times. And I cringe when folks criticize some schools because they focus on the learner explaining how they did something in their thinking rather than on whether they got the right answer. The learner is learning how to think. And eventually 2 + 2 will equal 4.

Stick and Mr S must be genius's....how did you guys know it was a "grab picture"? I assume you meant it was a generic picture taken off the web.

That would indicate the seller was a scammster right off. The line "The truck does need an exhaust replaced from the axle back, other then that is a pretty solid vehicle" sounds suspicious to me. Pretty solid vehicle are weasel words...either it is solid or it isn't....but I try to see through such statements.

I would say the guy has a lot of nerve selling a truck and not using the actual picture of the truck.

I think we tend to overlook the fact that a lot of people are just clueless in general, be it due to birth/genetics, early education, home environment, whatever. I remember a couple of decades ago going to see Oliver Stone's "JFK" with a girlfriend. The assassination was something I had read a lot about over the years and the entire affair fascinated me for a long time. When I watched the movie I became increasingly annoyed as it became clear that it was a fiction with only a tenuous relationship to the facts.

As we walked out of the theater on the way to the car, she starts talking about it and asking things like, "It's just terrible that they let them get away with that", "So why isn't xxxx in jail?", etc. She took it all at face value and as fact. I bit my tongue and she didn't stay my girlfriend for long after that (in fairness, it wasn't the first instance of idiotic statements). But this was someone with a responsible government job, about to be promoted to manage an office. She just had zero curiosity about digging beyond the surface regarding much of anything.

I have observed people who watch a fictional movie and think it is all true to life. And of course, if you read it on the internet it has to be true! And many people believe what they read in a newspaper, not realizing that newspaper probably has a lot of bias one way or the other.....and it is best to know before you believe everything they say. We won't even talk about TV networks...as we did that one before!

Unfortunately we have to analyse everything we hear or read these days. Weren't we going to run out of oil in the next decade? Now, my BIL who was one who insisted that was the case, as he bought up oil stocks, now says we wouldn't have a glut if it wasn't for fracking, and that is going to ruin the world now. There's always something..............

My niece's husband (I don't know if there is a name for his relationship to me) is one of those "wealth management" advisers. He makes a bundle and I guess he has skills, though I must admit a bit of resentment towards the amount of cash he rakes in for what I see as a shell game. Anyway... back in the spring he was advising all his clients to go heavy into oil-related investments, saying it had to go up. Of course over the last 6 months it has done just the reverse with no sign of turning around any time soon. So now he is saying, "oh, it's a LONG-TERM strategy". I guess so, as long as you haven't lost your shirt already. But he got all his fees up-front, so no worries as long as he didn't take his own advice.

Well, finally I signed up for Sirius/XM with a special 6 month rate. $50.00 for all access subscription which included all of their channels, Listen On-Line, and also includes their mobile application for listening as well. I had to wait for 4 months to finally get a subscription price I was willing to pay. I also made it clear that I wanted to receive an invoice in March for resubscribing and that I would not allow them to automatically charge my credit card without my prior approval. As long as they agreed to that, I was satisfied. According to the customer service representative, this was their premier plan and was all inclusive of everything they offer. I enjoy listening to Sirius/XM on my mobile phone with earphones at night prior to going to sleep. Good price for a good plan, IMHO.

I got an invoice for $208 (or something like that) that should be paid immediately. LMAO

I called the cancellation phone number and told them to cancel it four times after they kept giving me lower and lower yearly rates. Finally they hit on a number I could live with, but wanted to charge me $2 to mail me an invoice...again. I said they have already sent me enough mail and they could send me an invoice without charging $2. Of course they said I could just use a credit card. I said, "I will not give you weasels my credit card number because you would just renew me at the full rate." It didn't faze him. I said to cancel it.

He had to transfer me to the cancellation people. Cripes! That's the number I originally called.

I don't think I used a strong enough word when I called them weasels.

I just use a card and write down the expiration date on my calendar and call the day before. It's worked fine. The people you deal with on the phone are just hired drones who hate their jobs, so there's no point in being rude to them. They didn't create the crappy system.

Not a lot of nerve at all. The seller obviously drove up the east coast from Florida swapping out the engine and lengthening the truck as he drove. He advertised it all the way in case he could find a buyer enroute. The exhaust system just wore out from all the driving. After all that he still wants to sell it for half price. Nice guy.

Did I add that the Chevrolet sedan in my picture is an 8 passenger model! The
front seat and back are so wide, 4 across could share (not enough seat belts of course). LOL

Agreed. Those T-birds of the day had the best consoles, going all the way to the back dividing the back seats, and the chrome on the dash was very snazzy.

I forgot about the back seats...they always did that right.

I like the proportions of the car too, boxy styling, big roof with big windows. Some people have the need for a Soul, some a 64 T-Bird.

Well, when it rains it pours. I was just admitted to the hospital - fell off a step stool trying to replace a fluorescent light bulb in the kitchen. Herniated a disk in my lower back. They are giving me pain meds IV. I just don't seem to be able to catch a break in this life of mine. What can I say?

Mike, but you've always rallied, and this will be no different. Some people just do things the hard way, but come out of it ahead. Just rest that back of yours and feel better !

Thanks carnaught. I refused to go to the hospital where my Dad was. So I drove 8 miles further north to one of the Boca Raton medical centers where I felt they were more competent.

I haven't given up on my life yet, but it sure has been a rough ride this last year with my son's brain tumor, then Dad, and two hospitalizations for pneumonia.

My philosophy (belief) is that the more one suffers in life, the less one suffers in the hereafter.

I just use a card and write down the expiration date on my calendar and call the day before. It's worked fine. The people you deal with on the phone are just hired drones who hate their jobs, so there's no point in being rude to them. They didn't create the crappy system.

That may be true, but I'm sure they have been called much, much worse than that.
