Speaking of A/C, I just had to replace the A/C-Heating unit with air handling units in my Condo last week. When I got home from the hospitals and rehabs, my foyer was loaded with condensation leakage from my A/C. The old unit was only 10 years old. They put in a Rheem 2.5 ton unit for $3500. But it had to be done because the coils were corroded. Down here in South Florida, I use my A/C 12 months a year. It was in the mid 80's today as an example. I don't know how people survived down here without A/C back in the hay days. But A/C in a car with 95 degree temps and high humidity is just as critical. Imagine prying yourself out of your leather seats in a car without A/C or with inadequate A/C as Steven mentioned is a miserable undertaking.

@abacomike, welcome back. The Soul I really want has ventilated seats - not cooled but they felt nice wearing shorts in a cool cabin on a test drive.

Mustang has launch control but I'd never use it for fear of the stresses it must put on the car. What's your opinion on that? Would you buy a used BMW that some kid launched at every stoplight?

Roadrunner......thanks for the explanation, I had never heard of launch control before. Did some research, first, in answer to oldfarmers question;

Keep in mind that the harder you launch the vehicle, the more stress you will put on your drivetrain. Axles, driveshaft, clutche, etc must all be capable of transferring the power you’re now applying to the wheels. With sticky tires such as drag radials, these forces are only magnified. Before launching your vehicle aggressively you will want to make certain that all these components are capable of handling the higher loads.

For those like me who don't know what it is:

What is launch control, and how does it work?
Launch control (sometimes known as a stutterbox or 2 step rev limiter) are fairly simple, yet effective in ensuring consistent reliable launches at the track, strip or even on the street. The user defines a “launch rpm” that, when launch control is activated, the vehicle will maintain. This allows the user to hold the car at full throttle while still maintaining a suitable RPM for launch, based on vehicle capabilities, traction, wheel hop, etc. Turbocharged cars see an additional benefit in the ability to build boost before the vehicle leaves the line. These capabilities lead to smoother, consistent and reliable launches with maximum power from the moment you leave the line. This will help lower your 60ft times and/or help you be the first into the corner.

Nice to see you back.

It might be cheaper to buy a late model used F01 (they depreciate like few others), get a couple of nice carbon fiber/composite hockey sticks, attach them to the sides, and profit. I am sure it drives nice with the CF structure, but that stubborn pricing seems crazy. Must be a supply issue - it won't last forever.

No, but a few times a year wouldn't concern me; anyway, the BMW LC won't allow you to use it in repeatedly in quick succession.

Shoot, must have been thinking of the Volt or maybe the salesguy was thinking of something else when I asked about availability. He did mumble something about the Envision. And I get that confused with the forward collision stuff.

There were a couple of empty buttons on the Encore tester we tried to buy. Having those fascia blanks drive me nuts, always wonder what I missed out on.

I gotta make a spreadsheet....

You really might wanna try the Volt. It doesn't have quite the hauling versatility of the Encore but it has so much equipment on it, and the lease deals this month are really good. So far I'm loving it.

Well... at the most inopportune time, literally 3 minutes before I was to leave for work today, the furnace went out. The wife went down in the basement and smelled gas, not mine... from the furnace. I suspected the heating element went out. Had saved a receipt and the heating element that went bad 3 years ago. Had to call a HVAC guy to come out, emergency call. It was the heating element and a bracket. Not fair I says...not fair.

Yeah, when it's cold it's never a good time. But, with my work schedule there was only about a 20% chance the furnace would fail when I wouldn't be able to repair it. It's almost as if....IT knew.

My wife likes light. So we had 2 of these lights installed in our open concept vaulted ceiling livingroom/diningroom

Yes, kudos to the Edmunds staff for finally getting all those red flag issues squared away for Mike. I was the reigning champ with something like 20 total flags for spam/speaking unkindly to others, etc. and like Mike, never knew what I did wrong. Anyway all my flags disappeared too, though they never really bothered me.

Carnaught is back too, and he had that same problem. Having those two back is a nice Christmas present for the rest of us! (festivus)

Now maybe they can get isellhondas problem fixed and get him back too !

I had the sales manager yelling that I wasn't getting into his holdback and I didn't even bring that up.

@driver100, we have a few of those. They only come on when the sun shines - I'm finally getting to where I don't try to turn them off anymore. With the shiny tin on the innards, they get pretty bright reflecting the sunshine (and they are even cheaper to operate than yours, lol).

I bet neither the Volt or Encore have launch control, last one of those I played with was on the '82 Tercel. It was more useful to pop the control in the snow and powerslide into a parallel parking place in front of my house. Tried the "launch control" power slide in the Quest once. That was scary. Nothing like a good hand brake but they are all going to buttons now.

In mid-town Manhattan, probably. A friend of mine was charged $18 for a two-cup carafe of coffee recently.

I'm sure Mercedes lumped that oil change into an A or B "service" with all kinds of "check" and "inspect" items on a long and impressive list, requiring arduous sideways glances from the technician.

Like when it says "Check condition of front axle and front axle ball joints" in the B service, do you think they really put a small jack under each ball joint and measure the play in thousandths with a dial indicator?

I wonder.

Actually, the "A Service" was $325 and with taxes and the complete detail of the interior and exterior, it came to just over $500. You guys are all correct - there is a much less expensive way to get from one place to another in style and still service your vehicle appropriately. Unfortunately, I'm just too ignorant or stupid to figure it out in my aging brain with Alzheimer's tendencies. Show me a great deal on a luxury German Car and I begin to melt like a 6 tiered wedding cake at an outdoor reception in 110 degree heat. It must be genetic - without doubt. My father had that tendency as does my twin brother - so it is definitely a "FAMILY THING!"

I get a little "good buddy" break since the owner is a friend, but I got away with $202 for oil change, fluid top off, alignment, rotation (that's free anyway), replacement of two light bulbs, and they ground the rust off the edge of a rotor that was randomly hitting the dust shield and making an annoying noise.

Now if they had to change the muffler bearing or headlight fluid... I could been taking out a new mortgage

Welcome back Mike! So you wanted 10+ grand off 740 and the manager tossed you out. At least there were no games - simple no. Get out is probably a bit extreme - no reason to lose the temper. If I were him, I'd simply say - Sir, I don't think we are anywhere close to a deal. Not sure how you arrived to your offer, but it's clearly something I can't even entertain. My price offer is X and if you change your mind and the vehicle is still available, I'd more than happy to sell it to you. We may also be able to offer a similar deal on a similar vehicle, if this one is sold. Here is my card.

Don't forget a fancy coffee machine, fancy soap in the restroom and big three-arm star badge in front of the dealership. The star is worth $150 per visit, I'm sure. Seriously, I wonder how much are the franchise fees on the service garage. Must be a small fortune.

BTW, I'm sure there was also a lot of "checking", as it's an annual service, isn't it? Each check is something like 10-20 minutes in the labor book (actually done in 1-2).

Tomorrow is the post-accident visit for the wife's car. Bent wheel being replaced, alignment and checking what part(s) of the right front suspension are bent. Insurance estimate for everything is currently $538, although that's a little fluid depending on what they find when they start looking

There are other perks - leather covered waiting room chairs, washrooms with cloth towels, fragrant soaps and "eau de toilet" fragrances. I get a kick out of the new washroom fixtures - black porcelain and only 24" off the floor. At first I thought it was a kiddie washroom - but no - it's the avant-garde approach to architectural washroom design. Must be a German inspired fixture(s). Now where else would you experience amenities like that?

AB, the service on Mikes MB could have been free too if he bought the 3 year sevice package for about $1200 (your $1200 was included in the price of your car, nothin' is free!). I assume Mike doesn't bother buying the service package because he doesn't keep a car long enough to make use of it....except this time.

That looks a lot like what Son #1 installed in his first floor family room about 2 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure he got it at Home Depot. You are right about needing sunglasses. It is very bright. He's looking into finding a dimmer for it. Since it is a LED gizmo he can't use the one that controlled the old light.

FWIW, he just installed a new 70 inch Samsung TV in his newly created game room in the basement. I haven't seen it yet but he said the picture is pretty good. I could be wrong but I don't think they make too many 70 inch cheapos.

PF - I finally experienced what you are experiencing now - oil and filter change. Forgot what it was like! Kind of enjoyable with the coffee and bagels and cream cheese. It's the $500 I didn't care too much for.
$500 for just an oil change? That's about what I pay for the 60k major service on the X3(before my employee discount).

You guys ought to buy a Cadillac. That's all free. I have not spent a dime on maintenance and I get a free loaner car too.

The X3 had free service to 50k miles, as does my 2er. As for loaners, I even got one when I brought in my 1995 Club Sport, long before I became an employee.
