I don't think either Mercedes (who took the big pile of cash Chrysler had stashed at the time of the "merger of equals) or Cerberus (total mismanagement) did Chrysler any favors.

I think the whole Fiat merger is still evolving. If they could get their quality issues under control, it might work.

I mentioned a few months ago that I rented a Chrysler 200. No, it's not a sports sedan. But, given the price point (low $20s?), you could do a lot worse for the price.

Those wheels are light, inexpensive, and not too bad looking all considering. iluv, you are a true minimalist....nothing wrong with that, it is a good way to be.....better than the opposite.

Those Slant sixes were indestructible. At a time when most car engines were tired around the 80,000 mile mark they would go twice that and more. They weren't that good on fuel economy and when emission requirements tightened up those tough little engines were choked to death more so than other car's engines were.

That "wallowing" was easy to cure. Those cars were tough on lower ball joints, idler arms and tie rod ends. Replace those, throw on a new set of shocks and the wallowing would have been gone!

Pulled the Trigger -

Given the massive Memorial Day incentives we decided to pull the trigger on the Ram 1500 Laramie. Sticker was $54,800, paid $40,975. Ride is great, interior is plush and it will (occasionally) pull my wife's horse and trailer. Likely our new road trip car as well for both the Washington/Oregon coast and the mountains.

I do like the F150, there are some useful features that are not available on the Ram, but the Fords were $5K more on the sticker and the incentives were way smaller, think a screaming deal would have been around $50K for a similar truck.

I have to do some rearranging in the garage to make it fit, I have plenty of width, but need to move a few cabinets to allow for the increase depth.

isellhondas - yes, but ta fix the '73 Plymouth Gold Duster's undercarriage it would take...money! I bought my first car on time then. It was a '86 Mercury Lynx SW. It was the fall of 1989. Bought it from Budget Rental in Everett, WA. The white Lynx had 10,000 miles on it. Me...a minimalist...keep two cars in my stable, at one time?

You're right, driver100, I am a minimalist. You called it right. Even my KC doctor called me one when he was just about ta suggest I get a colonoscopy.

Murph, I wish you many years of happiness (but not too many years - after all, this is a "carman's" place) with the new Ram. Enjoy. But, you shouldn't have to make room for the Ram, just point the truck toward the open garage and hit the gas - it will clear its own place in the garage - after all, it is a "tank"!

Speaking of heat, yesterday the thermometer on my terrace hit 99 degrees - Miami officially broke a record yesterday at 98 degrees. Today isn't much different - already over 95.

I went up to South Florida National Cemetery this morning for the annual Navy, Marine, Air Force and Army memorial service. Of course, I visited my Dad's final resting place. The heat was horrific. Getting into the cemetery took a while, but getting out of there took over an hour. Must have been 5000+ people visiting their loved ones in honor of Memorial Day.

I agree that Chrysler really has noting to offer any more. The 200 is a Fiat knock off and the 300's platform is so old it's eligible for Medicare. Very sad for an old MOPAR fan like me.

Funny thing about Chrysler. Way, way back in the '40s they had a good reputation for quality, apparently. I remember reading an old Popular Mechanics owner's report on the then-new '52s and people complained that the new models weren't as well-built and had lots of quality problems. Fast forward to the striking '57 models and everybody loved the looks, but the quality of construction and assembly was abysmal. Their rep for quality was so bad that they had to introduce the 5/50 powertrain warranty in the '60s. Through the '60s and '70s their quality reputation remained poor. Engines and transmissions were pretty bulletproof but the rest of the vehicle not so much. They seemed to clean up their act in the '80s with the various K-car derivatives, then when the LH cars got introduced they received raves and sold well, but the quality bugaboos returned. They really have not been able to shake that reputation ever since. It seems endemic. Not sure why.

Yup - 2017. I brought the white one (with the biggest markdown) home first so I could drive back and say, while my wife liked the truck she hated the color, which was true. Told em I would go home and think about it. Emailed about an hour later asking if they would mark the Grey one down to the same price. They said yes...if I would buy today. So I said ok, but I need to trade my Benz in too, needed $10,500 for it (KBB priced it between $9,500 and 10,700 on trade in), knowing that I wanted $10K minimum. They countered at 9,750 and I said let me think on it. 5 minutes later they called back and said $10K if you come in tonight, so I said on my way.

I hear you oldfarmer - I tend to keep my cars for a while so the peace of mind is worth buying new. My Benz was a 2008, figure if I do at least 6+ years I got my moneys worth.

Great negotiation. I bet they were rolling their eyes when your threw in "the wife said..." . I think you may have hit them on a day where they needed one more sale to make a bonus hence the "if you buy TODAY" response. Did you plan it that way?

How about some pictures, especially the interior. I want to see what $54,000 buys in interior goodies.

Actually you may come out better in an accident in a Chevy Spark than you would in a 1963-4 Cadillac.

The Caddy has no crumple zones, airbags or shoulder restraints.

Still if given a choice it would be a tough decision to pick which car to be in!

That is an incredible deal............since I am not great at math and I am lazy I don't know the percentage, but it is large! Sounds like a nice truck, and a crazy discount!

The Dodge Ram is in 2nd place in Canada which is quite a feat against the annual best selling F-150.

WA just doesn't tax on value now, but with an incorrect valuation schedule that doesn't properly account for depreciation. And the local transit board is virtually untouchable as they "earn" their early retirements and gilded benefits.

IMO, real estate transactions made with dirty offshore money should be taxed heavily instead, as well as onerous taxes on vacant speculative properties.

Pickups have been very popular the last 10 or so years but I still haven't decided to get one. However, when I lived in SC I was thinking of getting one for self defense. I never saw so many pickups as they have down there and this was '92 thru '97.

I did try to plan it that way - especially the part about my wife hating white - I knew that already, but he did not. I try to keep the conversations as dry as possible, there really is not much they need to know about me or what my motivations are. I did tell him that while they needed to sell a car, I certainly did not need to buy one. Truthfully if they would not have budged on the grey one I would have thanked him for his time.

I did - they were really straight forward and did not twist my arm at all - their prices are on par with Dave Smith over in Idaho so I was comfortable with the purchase. Only two negatives (and these are small) they still showed a second sticker on the truck, I pity the person who walk in off the street and didn't use the web - the truck was listed with a $6k mark up which had it as $61K!!!! We never even discussed that number as on the web it as clearly listed at $40,950.

Second the delivery guy overinflated the tires. Should be at 39 PSI per the door sticker but all were at 45-46. The TPMS showed the value for each tire, so at least they were consistent. I confirmed with my trusty digital gauge and lowered all of them to 40 PSI even.

I will takes some pictures tomorrow, I love the interior - leather buckets with heated and ventilated seats in the front, plus heated rear seats, moonroof, 9 speaker Alpine system, navigation, etc. Should be great on road trips.

Oh and side note - for those of you around here, was at the Monroe fairgrounds for horse show. My wife and the other women from her barn were out there with their horses. However the schedule on Saturday amazed me.

1. Horse show, all day and ran through Monday
2. Swap Meet - quite the opposite crowd from most of the horse people
3. Goat Show - yes bring your goat to the fair grounds for the show - did not make it over to that
4. Auto racing, Saturday night is car racing night, looked to be Junior NASCAR types, very loud
5. And just to keep you on your toes there is a small airfield right next door, several times as we came out of the stalls we were looked up to see the belly of a light plane maybe 50 feet above us on final approach
