Hi, breld! How's the car; the wife; the family? Please respond in that order, as I expect my attention to wane toward the end.... :p

Well, need to ask about car first. Otherwise might be gone by the time he gets to that.

Wife and I went to Carmax to get an appraisal on the barely used Beetle, just to see if it was even palatable to consider trading out for an X5 so quickly. So, paid $23k for it brand new a scant couple months ago (if that?), and Carmax offered $21k. I'm not scoffing at $2k, but I can totally stomach that. We're X5 shopping Saturday! :o

Speaking of tires, I played with the size calculator. I thought the 215/45s on my old tC were scary skinny sidewall. The 225/45 on the Jetta slightly better.

The civic R is equivalent to 165/45!

Makes me appreciate the 235/60s on the RDX even more.

I'll be car shopping on Saturday as well but not for me and not for BMW's. My father is tossing around the idea of trading in his F-150 on a newer, higher level model. He originally was going to wait until Ford re-introduced the Ranger and downsizing but while in for state inspection a few weeks ago he was "caught" walking the lot while he waited for service. One thing lead to another and they had him in an office working the numbers on a Platinum model. He hasn't pulled the trigger yet but unless I convince him to stand pat he'll probably move forward on it.

This would be the shortest he's ever kept a vehicle. His last Ranger he kept for 9 years and the Ranger before that was around for 12.

New Continental Extremecontact Sport tires installed on the Mustang. Ride quality much improved. I never checked pressure on the old tires, but suspect they were way overinflated. Guy at Discount Tire said the cracking in the tread on the old Pirellis didn't look that bad, but they recommend replacement anyway since they were over six years old. I think I made the right choice!

I am currently at the tint shop right now getting the windows tinted and clear bra installed. This tint shop is actually housed in the indoor garage of a local car broker, so lots of salespeople around - many of which crowded around to check out the car. I get the feeling most enthusiasts have obviously read about it and viewed pictures, but everyone seems to be particularly impressed with it in person, similar to how I was when I finally saw one in the flesh.

I still haven't driven it all that much - when I have my kids, which was last night through this weekend, I take the Durango for their comfort and baseball hauling duties.

But the time I have had in it is nothing but fun. Can't wait to put on a few more miles on it and start pushing it a bit. I may simply be Honda biased, but I find the Type R to be very entertaining to drive even at normal speeds, whereas I always found the WRX to be more of a chore. It's without a doubt more specific in purpose than the GTI, but with only a mild compromise in daily drivability. Though I do find myself more paranoid about potholes with those incredibly narrow sidewalls.

At work, it's funny - as you can imagine, the wife and I have quite the reputation for the revolving door of cars, and this Civic has received more comments (complimentary ones at that!) than any other Audi, BMW or whatever else we've had. Not that I care about that feedback, but it is fun.

The one I posted specifically about on the RWTIV forum. It's a gray over ivory up at Gebhardt that is very well equipped. Based on Q's advice, it definitely seems a bit overpriced, though I have to say, it's pretty consistent with Schomp's one-price on comparable vehicles, so maybe there's a bit of premium here in CO.

Anyway, with the strong bid on the Beetle from Carmax in hand, we'll see what can be done.

In my experience, BMW dealers seem to have some kind of unspoken truce to all price their CPO cars at about $8-$10k over auction value. It is pretty obscene. It is also why I wound up buying my 135i before the dealer was able to CPO it.

Breld has had just about everything by now. Eventually had to recycle.

Bradd, I probably am doing tires on the RDX before winter. Up to about 41k on it now. Will enjoy the fresh tread and traction. But not paying for it (there go the first 2 payment free months!). 1 payment left in September, and finally own it outright! Wonder what it is worth?

    Well, yeah. :)

We had a 2012 X5 35d that my wife handed over to me when she became so enthralled with her MINI (that's, ahem, 2 MINIs ago). Then I traded that and the S4 together for the SQ5.

For whatever it's worth, this current gen of the X5 feels quite different from that previous gen, as far as refinement and car-like ride.

Good to know. And that looks to be exactly how the dealers around here are pricing them.

The dealer we're going to tomorrow actually has one a bit less equipped than the 2014 one we're looking at, but it's a 2015 with less miles. Non-CPO for whatever reason and priced thousands cheaper.

Realistically (and obviously), a 2015 with 1-2 years left on the original warranty will be more than sufficient for us without the extended CPO warranty.

Yeah, if/when we find an X5 she likes, it would be nice if they at least match the Carmax offer on trade and we can save on the taxes. Fortunately, since we moved last year, our tax rate is down to 4.1%, whereas it was 7.8% at our last location. Big difference on our car purchases!

    Nope, that's sales tax.

    State has one tax.
    County has another.
    City has a third.
Then, there may be special tax districts you are part of, based on your location.

    For me, it's 8%

told the wife today that we needed to get looking soon at cars. And might stop tomorrow while out running around doing stuff. She gave me a response along the lines of "whatever makes you happy", though without a lot of conviction! But she is a trooper, and will happily tag along.

my current obsession is a service loaner BMW lease, either a 3 series or X1. could be fun shopping those the week after Christmas. I think that I will be stopping to drive both of them tomorrow. along with a TLX V6. Should be a fun day! Then stop at one of the local breweries for a refreshment!

I like this one a lot. Black/blk isn't my favorite, but the condition seems promising. Carfax shows it as one owner. After looking the Z3 buyers guide website for comps, the price is in line. The 3.0 would be preferable, but I think it is all about condition with one of these now. M versions are well into the 30's and beyond. Tasty.

my budget is always a fungible thing. Partly depends on if I am getting a "dream car" that I can honestly say will be a long term keeper, so will just finance for cheap rate for 5/6 years. or, as has happened before, will end up saying screw it and spending more than I wanted it (wanted, not could).

I am dropping 2 cars (close to $750/mo) off the books in the next 2 months, and in december, make the last ever college tuition payment. So if I want to stretch a few $100 a month, can probably handle it!

or I will just lease again.

I always had respect for the old Pathfinder, even if it was something I would likely never buy - it was a legit off-roader. Now, well, I suppose a shopping mall parking lot is technically off-road.

It's not so much the CVT. There are 4 "modes" that you can select via a dial behind the shifter (Snow, Economy, Normal, & Sport). I've been driving in Normal & Sport. Normal & Sport make the transmission "kick down" for passing. Economy mode just leaves it in the highest gear. In Economy mode, it feels like you are in 5th or 6th gear of a manual transmission at 45 mph and try to accelerate. I just don't like the QX60 as a whole.

I actually like this one better. could live with the black interior I guess. Like the red accents, love the sport seats, and it is a 330!

For that price, why not get a new one? Are you still going to take a look at the new 2018 Accord when it comes out?

Got an email from Buick the other day.  Four lease payments waived and $1000-$2000 additional rebate on any Buick. Pretty nice pull ahead program.

I did some digging and I thought my last payment was Jan and due back Feb 1st.  Nope, Feb 1 and March 1st due back.  I think as crazy as this sounds it's better.  I'll recover from the holidays and start shopping around the middle of January.

Plus... this mess will be long done
