I get my local weather from my immediate residential area west of Pompano Beach. Two tornado warnings and one tornado watch are currently listed for Broward County. Winds are expected to be 80-90 mph from the northeast tonight with torrential rain. Not a fun place to be at this moment.

Up here in St. John's County, we have had very heavy rain all day due to a nor'easter off the coast that has nothing to do with Irma. Irma doesn't arrive here until Monday.

Even good liquor or food. If you don't have an appreciation for those things then buy what suits you. If others do appreciate them it doesn't necessarily make them a snob.......they may actually get some satisfaction from buying something nice.

The last thing I would pay for is a fancy car interior to impress my neighbors.

Yep, getting out tonight. The spaghettis were all over my place, now they're shifting west. But this may be even worse, as it may stay over water for longer. I might have sat cat 1, or 2, my house is fairly new, but cat 3, no thanks. It's only about choosing best time, so I can avoid the worst traffic.

I mentioned in CCBA that I test drove a really nice TLX today (sticker about 41K). Shared it with my daughter, and she really liked it. Then she shared that in the financial planning class she is taking, one recent topic was cars, and the teacher said that you really only need a Camry. At least he shot higher than a spark!

If it was all about impressing the neighbors, premium brand sales wouldn't be so high. A car doesn't even have to be insanely expensive vs a mainstream car to have a nicer interior.

Some people always think the less you pay the better off they will be. They can save the difference....for something they may really need, some day. There is a science to spending wisely, but also enjoying or benefiting from the things money can buy.

My wife was executor for friends who died recently. Had an estate worth almost $3million....had old wallpaper on their walls....probably 70 years old, no air conditioner, cathode TV, no dishwasher, burned cardboard and old newspapers in their fireplace, ate KFC and fast food, had an ancient Hitachi washer dryer thing that doesn't work, drove an old base model Uplander,....you get the idea. Left their money to their only relatives, a nephew and niece in England who never visited but sure went after every penny they could get or try to get.

There is a real lesson to be learned from these nice people. I am sure they loved saving every penny they could, but, wouldn't it have been nice if they got to spend some of the money they earned.

You only need a Camry.....sometimes it is nice just to buy what you really want, and not be totally practical all the time.

I believe in being conservative, living below means, etc. Overall. But you should splurge somewhat (not crazy) in whatever area is really special to you. Might be a nice car, vacations, good wine, fancy meals. Whatever. Just don't be crazy, but you do have to enjoy life somewhat.

I think that's good advice for young people and folks on a budget. I don't think you should deny yourself when you can enjoy things later in life.

Kind of like a diet: if you don't occasionally do this you are probably bound for unhappiness. But don't splurge just to impress because there will always be someone better off and the opposite. It is a game you can't win long term.

Plenty of youngsters here are the dawdlers. Distracted driving laws don't seem to be enforced, so it is a free-for-all.

After 2 seconds or so (of course, accounting for things like blocking vehicles etc), I give a little toot. Much longer gets a honk. Some of the "intelligent" lights here have sensors which detect gaps in traffic, and after a long gap, they assume the line is gone, and they sequence the light. A dawdler can create a gap big enough to throw this off, and hang everyone behind them out to drive. If only it would earn a ticket.

Some people love the thrill of the game when it comes to being frugal. More power to them. For me, as long as I make more than I spend (and save), I can divert a little for fun. After losing my dad relatively young, and a few people from my youth who I think departed too soon, it is hard for me to not want to get something out of today, too. Especially in terms of a little travel - it might be better to do when one is more physically able, and has a little more cash flow.

Hey fin, travel is good. I also agree with you on buying a more valuable car. If someone is managing to save money month-over-month -for a long time, man, I agree, go out and get a BMW or MB or Infiniti.

Someone like me - I would take the extra savings and get that 1968 Datsun 411 Bluebird. Perhaps a stray 2014 Nissan cube. Add them to my 2017 Chevy Sonic LS sedan and enjoy the ambience. Add a garage - a hangar large enough to fit a Boeing 747 jetliner ought ta do! Throw in a 1964 Triumph TR-4 and a stray 1969 MGB-GT and then we'll be cookin' with Crisco.

Anyone in Hurricane Irma's path evacuate. Don't be like Harry Truman on May 18, 1980, at Spirit Lake, Washington.

Me too!

It looks like it is heading right over our Florida home. Most of the full time residents are still there as Irma was supposed to be more to the East, hope they are all OK. It can't be a nice feeling waiting for it to happen....when you are pretty sure it is going to come your way.

Driver, how high above sea level is your house? My BIL is about 8 feet and the surge in Tampa my be that high.

It is a Honda CTX700D, its a 670 cc parallel twin engine with a six speed dual Clutch transmission. It's a low revving engine with plenty of torque (neatly flat torque curve). It's rated at 62 MPG. It's pretty peppy and pretty fast out of the box. Not so much at highway speeds but will suffice.

No two people have exactly the same tastes in cars (exterior/interior/options/safety/speed) which is why there are a multitude of car manufacturers and hundreds of makes, models and equipment options available for purchase. But it is our responsibility as car enthusiasts to respect the motivations of others in determining what car they desire and then purchase.

We may not agree with another's decisions or rationale in the cars they admire or purchase, but we should respect the individual's right to express himself through the car(s) he drives.

Boy, it's a good thing I got out of south Florida. According to my Electric Utility App, power is out at my condo and is not expected to be resumed for 3-14 days. I pray my Windows hold up and that the driving rains don't get in the apartment. This is truly a massive tragedy.

Good point. I have watched the Spark criticisms and just chalked them up to more GM attitude and if it only had an H or H on the badging views would be different. So I browsed a little more this morning rather than stopping at my local dealers' lots to window shop. I found Car and Driver had a review, so I thought, "Here goes."

I was stunned they only made one cute reference to its name. They actually liked it. It's a CITY CAR and not intended as ideal for highway driving. They liked the $18K version 2LT with the collision alert and blind spot monitoring while the $15 base price is the real sales marker.

The Spark offers color in its interiors beyond black and sort of black:

I may have to read more Car & Driver reviews. Maybe a dog can change its spots.

Everyone has their own priorities. I have no desire for a luxury make but I do enjoy a very nice vehicle with all the amenities I couldn't affford when younger.

Actually a DCT is a manual transmission with automated clutch that can be driven in either a manual or automatic mode. An automatic transmission does not have a clutch but a torque converter and when you come to a complete stop then take your foot off the brake you will creep forward. A DCT has clutches an if you come to a complete stop the cluchtes will disengage so that when you release the brakes you will not creep forward, even in automatic mode. Once you give it some throttle the clutch will engage.

So in layman's term it's an automatic but in reality it's an automated manual (or technically two automated manuals)

I think GM bashing has been traded for Mitsu bashing by C&D. I read the review of the Mirage and they not only trashed that car but the whole company.

Not enough money in Mitsubishi's budget for media payola I guess.

I'm a layman from way back. If you don't have to use one foot on a clutch it's as automatic as you need. Doesn't mater if the work is done by a torque converter or a computer. The point is to have as few distractions as possible so you don't fall off.

a CVT is an automatic but without a TC though. The terms seem to blur at this point. I go with the simple solution. If you can put it in auto shift mode, it is an automatic. how the mechanics works is somewhat irrelevant after that.

That's good, if you can. Left at 2:50'am, no weather yet, perfect traffic, no gas till GA border, but my 430 gets me from Tampa Bay to Atlanta on one tank. But I was scouting just to see what's going on. First gas I saw near Tifton, only regular. Filled a quarter tank, just in case not to be totally empty on arrival. Filled again in Macon, this time premium. Already arrived to Atlanta. Looks like it may not exactly be picknick here, but nothing in comparison. I hope to get back on the road Tuesday noon, but can only imagine the return traffic.

I saw three or four convoys of utility service trucks headed toward the storm. I'm sure they'll hunker down in a stand by location, so they can get to work once the maham passes. These guys are unsung heroes of this. Everybody knows about policemen and firemen, but they beat on electricians, even those on loan from out of state. They don't get thank you, they get why so long or sometimes even fists.

49 feet! We are on the inside of Tampa Bay....which is about 15 miles from our home....which is close to I-75.
We know lots of people who live much closer to Tampa Bay and they are evacuating. We have full time residents there, about half, and they will try to keep us posted. I am hoping it won't be as bad as they say. Of course the TV News hypes it up, but when you see news announcers blowing around in the wind, you have to accept it is pretty real.

It is still good advice, unfortunately many of us (me included) have always had a circle of like minded friends and we continue to conform to their expectations as well as our own. One of the main characteristics of The Silent Generation, of which I am a member, is Don't Rock The Boat....too much.

Yeah. But just think of the legroom back there--LOL. Most hearses here are GM with a few funeral homes using foreign made vans for flowers and some of the mourners. But most of the mourners vehicles are Cadillac.

I don't know what brand the motorcycles are that the idiots who try to escort the processions and think they are policemen ride. I think of Evil Knievel every time I watch them at work. We run into processions on the way to a ChickFilA and they go by the ChickFilA while we're eating. Those escorts have a unique personality quirk.

2017 Chevy Sonic LS in Kinetic Blue

Apparently this car is a much better car than I thought it was, as far as owner comments on Kelley Blue Book.com. I have read only 4 of them, but owners like it's quiet, smooth ride and more power than the other subcompacts. It fits in between the Spark and Cruze. It has a 1.8L I-4 cyl engine with 138hp. I like how they've fixed the front end of the car.
