True enough about the voltage drop and burning up motors. Earlier this year I was shopping for a new electric lawnmower. I saw one I liked that had a 13 amp motor. Odd as most are 10 or 12 amps. The specs said if you were running an extension cord longer than 25 feet it needed to be 12 gauge wire. I need about a 60 ft cord and that in 12ga would have been heavy, bulky and very expensive. I passed.
I prefer an electric lawnmower if I was doing the lawn myself these days. But, if I was buying one I would spend the extra amount and get a chargeable one that doesn't need a cord. Moving the cord and getting around trees is a real hassle.
same here Farmer. Once in a while on the thruway or jersey turnpike I will realize I crept up to 85 when traffic is flowing and have a panic attach that I am about to have gumballs light up behind me.
Last time I was driving to NC I noticed down south, I think in VA, on I95 there were signs that a certain amount over (maybe 10, where the limit was 70) was considered reckless driving, or excessive speed. Something with a big fine and many points. But I love the 70 MPH speed limit. Can just loaf along at 75 where I want to be anyway, with no worries!
@jmonroe, I think you educated quite a few people, including me, with your volts. amps, and wire gauge post. My friend is very happy because his wife's ice cream is being saved.
If you really want to get him pumped, ask him about voltage drop (which he hinted at previously).
Man, do you really want to put this group through all of that? It would put @driver100 to sleep by 10 o'clock in the morning. You know it would be well over 500 words once I explained Ohms Theory, explained how to calculate wire circular square mill area, explained conductor temperature rise, gave a few examples, etc. etc.
But let me give this a quick try. The longer the extension cord the larger the wire diameter has to be to provide a sufficient amount of power that is required by the load (appliance), without having a large "voltage drop" across the cord itself due to it being inadequately sized. By not having enough voltage left to be delivered to the appliance, it WILL burn up. Remember the wire gauge thingy? It's all about that.
Gee, I think I just did it without putting anyone to sleep. I guess I still got the touch.
jmonroe
I'm a little afraid to ask, but Ohms Theory? I thought it was a law.
Back in the dark ages of the slide rule when I got my EE degree, my roomie and fellow EE student was asked where a certain voltage would be found in the circuit diagram that had been drawn on the blackboard. (THAT should give you an idea of how long ago this was...LOL) And his response INSTANTLY became a "law"...
The support documents for 110v "Occasional Use" charger (the comes with the BMW i3, i8, and PHEVs) warns against using extension cords, mainly because some imbeciles would use the same cord that they use for their Christmas tree. I have a 2' 12 gauge cord that I use with the i3 charger and it never gets even remotely warm.

Some people view laws as simply theoretical.
It's very interesting that you say that.
Pythagoras's Theorem has been around for a long long time and has been proven to be correct, many times over for just about as long, yet it is still called a "theorem". There otta be a law about something like that.

In mathematics everything is a "theorem", as there are no "laws". There are axioms that create a world. In here, the axioms are Euclidean geometry principles. Within those axioms, the theorem holds. There are non-Euclidean geometries, where the theorem does not hold.
Physics has "laws" and "principles". Math has "axioms" and "theorems".
I am back in Florida for less than a week and I hear a Billy Fuccillo ad on the radio. They are looking for a new Caroline. They want applicants to submit a resume.
I wonder what happened? This is all I know....hope it isn't a Harvey Weinstein situation It's incredible that Caroline's absence from local television commercials for Fuccillo Kia of Cape Coral was noticeable this month. That shows how ubiquitous these spots have become in Southwest Florida with dealership owner Billy Fuccillo and his in-your-face trademark: "It's HUGE!"

I agree with what you have said technically, and here I thought I could make things laborious.
In math 2 plus 2 is 4 and that is the law. All of us would still be in grade school if we tried to change that.

From the feedback on some websites it seems Fucillo Kia is one of those last of those "old school" dealership standing. Examples: employees forced to hang out in a lot (in 80-100 degree heat) until they meet their quota of "ups" and some other lovely practices of that sort. It's not hard stretch to imagine Caroline being subjected to less-than-seemly practices, too. But it could be something completely benign and innocent. BTW, these ads are so obnoxious, all I want is to change the channel.
My wife still won't go back to one local Nissan dealer. Still remembers walking the gauntlet of salesmen lined up outside the door, many smoking or smelling like it. Was not consumer friendly.

Ha ha you have hit a local mystery here in NY where Billy has a large network. One story on the local social media was that Caroline was blackmailing him for his persistent sexual harassment lest she ruin his reputation. Another similar story was that she was going to file assault charges because he knocked her off a bar still when she got drunk at Saratoga. There was even a story about cocaine smuggling.
Anyway, the tin foil hats have her bumped off and put in a car trunk headed to Florida. If you buy a car from his store you better give it the sniff test...and not just for flood damage.
Of course none of that is true but in absence of facts people's imaginations run wild.

Did you notice the article was posted in July 2013? Somethings wasn't adding up - Driver wrote that there were announcements for new applicants.
So... isn't she entitled to a vacation every year?

Of course vacation. Just because someone is on vacation doesn't mean you close up shop and wait for them to return. You'll never get cars over the curb doing that

Stick with electrical matters JM.........the ad says they need someone to REPLACE Caroline. They don't say much about the dearly departed either.
I would be afraid to go near his dealerships to tell you the truth. The latest ad - looking for a replacement for Caroline - says something about a free trip to Mexico when you buy a car, also mentions free booze. I was raised to believe you don't get anything for free.....so, the way I see it, you are going to pay for it one way or the other.
I have also heard about him making his sales staff greet outside in the blazing sun. He may have $100 million, but, it none of it came or will come from me. I sure don't want to be on a cruise ship with the narcissistic Billy.

He doesn't say what he's gonna give you, but I bet it comes with a side of petroleum jelly. The details are always a little fuzzy on those offers. There's a lot of "up to" disclaimers in those ads. Looks like they will match the value of your trade up to an extra $5k depending on model.
You probably have to be a recent grad, military vet, x plan in a wheelchair to get that price.
Still getting 30% off a new car is interesting. Call up and see where the bait and switch come in.

I think you nailed it with all the Ford incentives and having to do with the trade. It says call for details and that is where the runaround will be. I guess they know most people will cave in when they start adding to the price. The old bait and switch, but with a car it is more powerful. Guy is at home and sees he can get a brand new Taurus (out of all things....but, still a big honking luxo car) for just $19000! He goes to the dealer in his 95 Fiesta hoping to get $6k for it....a brand new luxo car for $13000! And by then he has told his wife, kids and friends he is getting a new Taurus. By the time he finds out it will really cost him $35k with his trade, he is in too deep to retreat!

It's incredible that Caroline's absence from local television commercials for Fuccillo Kia of Cape Coral was noticeable this month. That shows how ubiquitous these spots have become in Southwest Florida with dealership owner Billy Fuccillo and his in-your-face trademark: "It's HUGE!"
Did you notice the article was posted in July 2013? Somethings wasn't adding up - Driver wrote that there were announcements for new applicants.
So... isn't she entitled to a vacation every year?
Lets not jump the gun here.
jmonroe
Is that why they seek a new spokesperson? Vacation?
Of course vacation. Just because someone is on vacation doesn't mean you close up shop and wait for them to return. You'll never get cars over the curb doing that
jmonroe
You're really digging your heels on this one, I see. It's OK, we can all agree to disagree.
All kidding aside, this Fucillo guy must be one of the largest dealerships in the country but there are none of them around me. Maybe that's a good thing. We are just about out of the "old school" dealerships around here although a few keep showing their age. :@

My BIL said he needed a bath after shopping there.
There aren’t many places that I might shop where I felt the need to take a shower after leaving the store, but there are a few places I won’t go into for fear that the shower couldn’t wait until I got home.
Price is fair. Its 42% only because it has so few miles. are you sure the automatic sedan was a $10k car? What did a base model coupe sell for?
There tends to be a base price for a car that is clean and runs well....and that would be around the $5000 mark. If that is what you want to spend then that car is probably as good as you can find. In my opinion, we traded in a 2013 Passat with 14000 miles on it and got $11000. If it was me, I would have tried to come up with the extra $6000, because you are getting a better car, a newer car, and a car that would have about 5 years less miles on it........you would be getting a lot more and better car, for $6000 more.
I was planning activities and appointments to update my calendar and realized that Thanksgiving is just 3 weeks from today. Wow! It sure is early this year. Can Christmas music on Sirius/XM be far behind? Me thinks not!
I am back in Florida for less than a week and I hear a Billy Fuccillo ad on the radio. They are looking for a new Caroline. They want applicants to submit a resume.

When I was buying my son a car for college, he wanted a Sentra. As we went into the store I said to him, "Lets do this quickly. This place makes my skin crawl". One of the salesmen overheard me and wasn't very happy...LMAO.

Holidays, channel 9 XM, started at noon yesterday. We listened to it for a minute while on the road traveling. Also Holly is channel 70. Whatever happened to calling the channel "Christmas"?

It seems the lieup on Sirius is different than XM. Last year I think they used 17 Love Channel for Christmas. That seems to have faded but I can get softer popular songs on The Bridge (32) and The Blend (16) but, I think my 6 months free on the new E400 came and went at the beginning of October. I am not at home to renew, and I don't think I signed anything when I picked up the car. I wonder if they will find me in Florida. They may not have my Florida information....or my email address. There is no way I would subscribe if I only use it for 7 months of the year while back home. I got about 12 hours of play on a USB stick, and that works out fine, plus Tampa has WDUV the DUV, similar to Mikes mostly music, limited commercials, FM station.

Pythagoras's Theorem has been around for a long long time and has been proven to be correct, many times over for just about as long, yet it is still called a "theorem". There otta be a law about something like that.

In math 2 plus 2 is 4 and that is the law. All of us would still be in grade school if we tried to change that.

Anyway, the tin foil hats have her bumped off and put in a car trunk headed to Florida. If you buy a car from his store you better give it the sniff test...and not just for flood damage.
Of course none of that is true but in absence of facts people's imaginations run wild.
