Repaired cars are unknown problems:

Just the act of touching the car diminshes it.

I had a leaking/detached coolant hose, yes, it was touched due to the accident.

I had a leaking/detached wiper fluid hose, yes, it was touched due to the accident.

I had a dead low beam bulb, yes, it was replaced due to the accident.

2 out of 3 of those might have occurred regardless, but I'm in the camp that says these problems are why DV is inherent in any major repair. Headaches, unknowns.... limitless potential for pain.

Most homeowner's policies have "loss of use" coverage for this loss. Rental cars don't quite work the same way because I'm not put in a like kind and quality rental and for some reason insurance companies argue this too.

Rebuilding the home is like reparing your car. Both take time and in both cases you cannot use the item while it is being worked on. And in both cases you can be insured to cover temporary replacements for them.

All I can say is my car is a 2008 and it is very hard to change that sundial.

don't laugh. A lot of 08's look modern overall, but not when you look at the MMI display. Still plenty of old fashioned little 1 line LED style displays that look incredibly old fashioned now.

Technology. Used to be I worried about wattage for a bulb.

Now I fuss over wattage equivalent, true watt usage, temperature of the light in Kelvin, and is it DIMMABLE or not.

After about a year, I've got it down as far as what I like and don't like.

Hey, I still drive a vehicle with crank windows.

Switching subjects, my Ford has been in the garage a long time this winter and although I backed it out in the driveway twice just to keep the battery charged it's sat longer this winter because of the frequent snow storms. I put some Stabil in before storing it but I wonder if I should add some injector cleaner when (or if ) the roads ever clear of salt.

Techtron comes to mind but would you guys reccommend something else?

Yes, I agree with you. Now, you pay a lot more up front for bulbs, but they should last a long time and save electric consumption. Lumens and light temperature are 2 big considerations. Dimmable could be a whole other fish fry.

I hate buying light bulbs anymore.... color temp, LED or CFL, dimmable or not, Lumens, wattage equivalent

I’ve got a shelf full of bulbs we hate.

It’s just nuts. So easy before. 40, 60, 75 or 100. Done.

I always use Stabil in the Cutlass when I store it for the winter and I always notice a difference in the late spring after I use up the last of that tank and fill up for the first time with fresh gas. I really like Techron but it is no longer available up here. I used Lucas fuel treatment a couple of years ago and that seemed to do good things; also Marvel Mystery Oil never seems to hurt.

Re. light bulbs - I bit the bullet ad made my first trip to the mega-Ikea store here on Friday. I hate the layout and how they make you go thru a maze like a lab rat in order to get what you want. But they do have lots of neat stuff. One of the things I noticed was in the lighting section they now seem to sell only LED bulbs, and they seem to be the cheapest place to but them by far. I was looking for a desk lamp and got one, and the LED bulb that they recommended was all of $1.29.

I'd just put fresh gas in it as it uses up the older, but protected, fuel that's now in the tank.

If it's down 2 or 3 gallons from full from idling to charge up, just replace those with fresh fuel. I
do that with my small motors. I use Stabil if I don't run them empty in the fall. Then I put in fresh
fuel days before I try to start them. The fresh fuel dissolves any sediment that might affect the carburetors.

It's an interlibrary loan that I couldn't find at my local about a cryptoanalyst during the I and II World Wars.

Farmer, I recommend a bottle of cleaner, top up with premium, than at about 6:00 AM on a Sunday get on the Northway for an Italian tuneup.

Light bulbs, I hate them now. I am trying to nurse my (almost gone) supply of old fashioned ones as long as possible, but I do have a couple of packs of LEDs my wife bought. Using one in my office desk lamp. Used to it by now, but I did notice the difference. Not as bright (since IIRC the old one was a 100 watt). No clue about the color or style of the bulb. I think we have some in the hall bathroom now?

but, not many other places I can use them. Family room is all 3 ways, so not there. Kitchen is recessed, and I am not spending $200 to replace all them before one burns out. Master bath uses small base candelabras I think.

I know - that happens. But we both forgot choices, daylight, ultra white light, soft light. Hard to even match lights any more.

You do know there are short cuts in IKEA. Look for the map on the wall or column, you can cut through. After 35 years I just found out about this a month ago.

that is only upstairs Driver. At least in the one by us, you need to walk through the entire marketplace to escape!

I do like the swedish meatballs though, so we always try to be there at lunch time.

Stick, all the food there is pretty good. Sometimes if we have had a busy day I give my wife a special treat and we go to IKEA for dinner

...that is at home....here we have Denny's/ (Actually, I have given up on Denny's, found better places and the bourbon chicken skillet isn't as good as it was)

Since the market has been recovering we can now go to more upscale places, like JM.

I don't know where I left y'all with the whole job situation. A few weeks ago, I started down the path to becoming a teacher. It would be a massive cut in salary for me but I feel like it will make me much happier. Long story short, I am registered to take the mandatory 50-hr course and will complete that in June. I am in talks with my home district about substituting, which you can apparently do with nothing more than a background check and interview. And I have taken a few practice certification tests and scored well above passing with zero preparation.

Meanwhile, an old coworker reached out to me on Thursday wondering if I'd be interested in being a freelance editor at his new company. I start tomorrow. Unfortunately, it means trekking to NYC twice a week for the next several weeks, but gotta do what ya gotta do. They are nice enough to agree to let me work from home the other days and probably more often after we are aquainted. It is certainly good money.

My two girls went there and graduated plus did some grad work. I did some schooling there and was pretty close to getting my MBA also, same as the wife. I met my wife at FAU when John Dean came to speak. It was outside and we sat on the grass. She happened to sit next to me. For some reason I liked the way she looked and started talking with her. Talked most of talking about Watergate. As we were leaving, I asked for her number figuring she thought I was goofy and would give me a fake one. Turns out it was good and we started dating, this was in the fall of 1977.
We've been married since 1981 and have 3 wonderful kids. Funny, didn't want to go hear John Dean but my friends got me a ticket and said I'd try to make it. Guess G-d had different plans for me, us, as I did go, and the rest is history! So yes, FAU has had a big impact in all our lives at Casa Sandman.

The course is 3 Saturdays plus online work at your own pace. I could easily teach English, math, and science, but it turns out they also want you to have college credits to back up your specialty (if not teaching elementary), so I can only teach English unless/until I take enough classes in the other subjects and pass the certification tests in those areas. The rules change depending on the grade you want to teach. I think middle school is where I want to be.

Same with me stick. I couldn't afford to be out of work so I pretty much took what I could get or what I could switch into. I have been through a lot of jobs in my time. Money was never great, but the learning and experience allowed me to start my own business....and that was fun and rewarding.

Good luck QB, you have accomplished a lot in a short amount of time. Changing jobs and careers frequently is becoming the new normal....I was ahead of my time (as usual

).

Yes, FAU is a State University just east of I-95 on Glades Road in Boca Raton. Nice campus - I walk at Boca Town Center Mall every day which is 1/2 mile from the campus.

My Dad was in the Signal Corps during WWII and served as a “cryptologist” and “cryptographer”. He was in charge of a group of 15 men stationed just behind enemy lines in northern France and southern Belgium where he oversaw the decoding and encoding of highly sensitive messages.

During the “Battle of the Bulge”, his unit ended up BEHIND ENEMY LINES because of the surprise speed of the encroaching German forces. That’s how he earned his Bronze and Silver Stars by singlehandedly taking out several machine gun nests and mortar batteries that were killing men in his unit.

As for your library book out of FAU, shame on you!

I wonder how much your overdue book fine will be?

So good to hear. I became a teacher in 1966 through a graduate fellowship in Chicago and eventually got certified through Illinois and received my administrative certificate to become a Principal and Superintendent. It was a great profession and teaching children is so rewarding.

I'm there with ya. I lost count on jobs. It is over 20. My longest was nearly 9 years. Behind that is a 2.5-yr stint.

A good friend of mine from HS tired of insurance sales after 5 years and went back to school for teaching. After a year filling in as a long term sub he was hired on as a full time history teaching and he hasn't looked back since.

My sister is also a Montessori teacher in Ohio and while she took a sabbatical until my niece is in kindergarten next fall, she plans to return and is hoping to start off subbing in their home district before moving back to full time. She also finds it very rewarding and finds it gratifying to see her students succeed. I give you a lot of credit for making a career change....I can't say I would be as bold to do the same after almost 13 years in the same field.

Good luck with the teaching gig - still probably the most unfairly castigated and questionably managed profession. I have a friend who wanted to be a high school math teacher - he's a math nut and he gets along with kids. He did a couple quarters of student teaching and backed out - the micromanaging he was receiving from the established teachers seemed to be set up to drive people away (the kids apparently loved him), and the teaching school did nothing to help. Now he works in the actuary field and no doubt makes a few multiples of a teaching salary - and the school system lost someone who could have been a valuable resource in a tough area.

My sister is going into teaching soon, I think starting next year. She was a GM at a local daycare chain, but got burnt out, and had a medical issue that made her slow down and think about things. She'll be in special ed, which is another one where there's probably a shortage of talent.

My wife was a substitute as my son's school for nearly a decade, she grew tired of dealing with the higher grades and when the Kindergarten Aide retired she applied and was hired. She much prefers herding cats to dealing with middle school and high school students. She's actually a Registered Dietitian, but unlike me there is zero chance that she will ever return to the field she majored in.

I doubt that I would have ever been allowed to teach, especially 5 th grade, since that was the worst 3 years of my life.

The teaching I liked the most was Driver Ed. The kids were motivated and if they did talk all I had to say was if you talk again you are going to wait out in the hall....and you probably won't pass because you will miss something important. They all wanted their license, no discipline problems.

As a way to make a living while going to college, I supplemented my Computer Science degree with a certification (from the university) to teach Driver's Ed. They even let me use a car that belonged to the Driver's Ed dept. It had a brake pedal on the passenger's side for me to use. It was a Chevy Citation. It was also a pretty miserable car, made worse by the amount of abuse it received from Driver's Ed students.

The most harrowing student I had (among many harrowing students) was a lady who lived in my small college town. Her husband was a prof in the school of business, who I had for 3 quarters of stats. So we knew each other.

I'm guessing she was in her mid 30s as her husband was about the same age and had just become tenured shortly after he did is dissertation.

He had been trying to teach his wife to drive for a decade, and grew so frustrated, he quit trying. He said he'd give me a $50 bonus (I was making $75/student if they passed their driving test). That was big money for me at the time.

She had some sort of issue that caused her to drift to the left. I personally thought it was a form of vertigo, but I don't think she or her husband thought it was a physical malady. All they knew is she couldn't keep the car in her lane, barely missing oncoming traffic. She had 6 lessons with me. In each one of them I had to take over the wheel and/or use my brake because she was going to hit someone.

After many tears (some of them coming from me), I painted a small line on her side of the left part edge of the windshield. I told her to keep her eye on the line of the windshield and aim the car with the windshield line just to the right of the lane markers. After a couple more lessons, she got the hand of it.
